John Travolta started out in a TV sitcom "Welcome Back Mr. Kotter" as a smart-ass HS student. While still young he played a role as a dancing fanatic in "Saturday Night Fever" followed by "Grease". So for the most part he sang and danced early in his career before coming an awesome bad-ass in movies.

Grease started out as a Broadway hit, then the movie back in the 70s when there was a 50s rock renaissance going for awhile. They did a live tv performance a few years back, and it is one of the most performed musicals by school and local companies.
John Travolta was known for his dancing in the Saturday Night Fever movies during the disco era.

Great song! I remember being in summer school 1977 John Marshall High. This scene rehearsed during the week and filmed on a Saturday on our football field. We had to have our summer football practice on our baseball field because of the filming. Decades later, while flying over my old high school heading back to Van Nuys going through Burbank airspace with Lorenzo Lamas, I shared them facts with him and he then responded, yea I know. I forgot he was in the movie, lol.

My first memory of John Travolta was as one of the high school kids in the network sitcom "Welcome Back, Kotter." When Grease was made into a movie, I never quite knew if John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John were in the original Broadway cast, or if they were cast for the movie. I suspect the latter because ONJ had established herself as a pop singer a few years earlier. Perhaps they just thought those two were a more photogenic couple than whomever was cast on Broadway. I believe that in more recent Broadway to Hollywood hits they make an effort to use the original Broadway cast (at least the first time they turn it into a movie).

    • @boki1693
      @boki1693 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Olivia was a pretty big star in Australia before she was here so she nor Travolta was in the Broadway play. However, as I mentioned above, a very young Adrienne Barbeau played Rizzo in the play.

John Travolta was in the Broadway production and the national tour as a replacement for the original cast but didn't play Danny. In fact, Jeff Conaway played Danny before being recast as Kenickie. Travolta was the huge star once the movie was made.

John Travolta started out on the hit TV series "Welcome back Kotter. 1975-79..." As Vinnie Barbarino. We all grew up on him. He was the heart throb of the show (Teenage idol) So it was no surprise he was the one who would go on to make it big. "Saturday Night fever. 1977." and "Grease.1978" Were huge hits for him.....Then he just faded off into nothing. "Pulp Fiction.1994." Was his rebirth and again another big hit for him...It seemed everything he touched turned to gold.

In this episode of Brad & Lex, someone get an excorcist! Nostalgia has possessed Lex as she is clearly overcome by this 1978 tune from the classic movie "Grease" which gets her right into her "Sandy bop" as Brad is content with an unenthusiastic "side to side sway".

John Travolta grew up in NYC. His mom was a dance instructor and he learned to dance at a young age. His first big role in film/TV was as the character Vinnie Babarino in the sit-com Welcome Back Kotter. He then went on to do Saturday Night Fever which was a blockbuster success. He then went on to do Grease and then Urban Cowboy, all of which drew big box-office returns. He went on hiatus in the mid 80's and did not appear in any films until Quentin Tarantino did the movie Pulp Fiction in 1994. He was nearly forgotten about as an actor until his role as Vincent Vaga in that movie revived his acting career. The scene where he dances with Uma Thurman wasn't originally in the script, but when Travolta agreed to do the film, Tarantino asked if he would be willing to do a dance scene, to which John agreed. John choreographed the entire dance with Uma and selected the music they danced to. In the world of dance, he can't find a bigger male name than JT. He was the dance king.

I got to see this on Broadway before the movie came out. Adrienne Barbeau played Rizzo before she was ever on Maude. (all in the family spin off show. If you never heard of "All in the family" one of the greatest ground breaking sitcoms of all time...... I have no words)
My bros ex wife(LOL, I am old but not that old, they are both about 20 years older than me) was in a lot of Broadway plays back then so she knew most of the cast. I was like 12 or 13 at the time. When I heard they were taking me to see Grease, I was just glad it wasn't "Oklahoma" which my bros ex wife was in around the same time and because that show bored me to tears. I remember that after the show we and a lot of the cast, including Adrienne all went out for pizza. But at other plays my bros' ex-wife was actually in, We got to go in the dressing room before and after the play. Lets just say the actors and actress are no shy about undressing in front of people. So when I say that it was a bit of a disappointment to be going out for pizza after the show, I think you will understand why. LOL. Hey it was the early 70's and we were just at the end of the hippy era. It wasn't that big a deal to the people in the play. Well, for 12 year old me it was. :)

All us teenage boys were in love with Olivia Newton John back in the day. Her, Donna Summer, Farrah Fawcett oh man.

"it's not exactly piquing my interest" -- isn't that Brad's default position?

I was 5 when this movie came out and I saw it in the theater. My pre-k school took us. Yall should watch it. It's a musical, but it's a good story.

Y’all should really watch Grease. One the coolest musicals ever. Travolta was a very talented song and dance dude back in the day

My parents let a bunch of us 8 year old kids see it in the theaters, when it released. It was a good movie. Now, imagine being in your 20s, and seeing it again, and actually understanding what they were singing about...

Most trained actors are trained in voice and dance even if the public only knows them as primarily a movie or TV star. Great examples include Fred Astaire, Meryl Streep, Martin Short, Barbra Streisand, Hugh Jackman, Neil Patrick Harris, or Scarlett Johansen, all who were professionally trained. So they know how to stage fight, or sword fight, and they can sing and do all of the major dance moves.

    Hilarious!
In the summer of my ninth-grade year, I met my first real girlfriend, who was a year older than me and in the next grade up, and we listened to a lot of records that summer together downstairs in their basement.
Grease came out that summer and it was the opposite of the kind of things I was into, which were a lot more rock. The last thing in the world I wanted to do was to go see that movie with her and her sister and her boyfriend in the theater but he and I knew we had to do it so we did it and it was actually pretty fun in the end. She bought that album and we played it all the time.

I had a major league crush on Olivia when this movie came out. I saw it one night and then I went back and snuck in the next 6 nights and stayed for both showings. I didn’t have an allowance and I was saving my paper route money for Christmas gifts.

John Travolta was a Broadway actor before his film roles. He was in the Broadway cast of Grease as a replacement in the role of Doody, not Danny Zuko as he was in the film.

The moral of the song, the movie......completely change yourself to be loved and accepted. Catchy and classic though.

Sorry, but absolutely wrong. More like- be yourself, not what your friends expect you to be. They met during the summer and fell in love, and were completely themselves when it was the 2 of them. They went back to school and almost blew it because they had to be cool to be accepted by their peers.
