one of the most epic and rockin jams ever captured on recording...and then when it ends, the echoing applause of what sounds like only five people in the audience. how amazing it would've been to be there, and be heard as that sixth person applauding his heart out.
My VERY favorite VU song. I like the Val Valentin mix of the studio version best. Lou's singing on that breaks my heart every time. While the vocal melody is truncated here, this version has such intense guitars, it's almost incomprehensible. Sterling Morrison's wrist bones must have been laced with Adamantium. Ordinary humans can't just _do_ that. They'd hurt themselves!
People like to moan about Doug Yule in the band, but just listen to how strong this sounds. It's a band at the height of their powers live. You know they just had to be on that stage at that moment doing that song. It's why I first picked up a guitar.
I’ve read somewhere that Sterling Morrison said at bigger venues the band were able to turn it up even further. They were kind of scaling it back at the Matrix because it was a small nightclub.
The studio version is perfect for what it is, and this live version is perfect for what *_IT_* is. In my opinion it’s apples and oranges. Both bring me an equal amount of joy.
What's that longer version video with the psychedelic visuals and go-go dancers? It seems to be possibly a live performance but there was no crowd noise. They must have been mesmerized. Anyway, that one puts this version to shame. Mr. Yule's masterpiece performance was jaw dropping.
That one is on the album 1969: The velvet Underground Live. It was a live double album of the Matrix shows from 1969. Recently they released a box set of the complete Matrix shows and it includes both versions.
far too short. I prefer the longer Version 1 which seems like it could go on forever because they're all in synch (and it's nice to listen to on repeat). this version feels like the warm up...
I have a question for serious VU fans. Which guitar is Lou and which is Sterling? In the right channel I can hear muted rhythm and in the left is more power cords. Any ideas? These are the things that keep me up at night.
It's not a cover, but there's clearly a Beatles influence in this. A friend of mine pointed this out, and at first I was incredulous, yet after thinking about, I realized that there is a connection.
[Verse 1]What goes on here in your mind? I think that I am falling down I think that I am upside down [Chorus]Lady, be good, do what you should You know it'll work alright You know it'll be alright [Verse 2]I'm going up, and I'm going down I'm going to fly from side to side See the bells up in the sky Somebody's cut the string in two [Instrumental Break] [Verse 3]One minute born, one minute doomed One minute up and one minute down
How Lou and Sterling managed to hold the rhythm on the guitar for this long is pretty incredible.
up the nose?

Would have been amazing to walk into an empty bar and hear this band perform
Mo Tucker's underpinning rhythm stitches it all together. Simple, hypnotic and so effective.
This is of historical quality in the world of Rock music. Timeless.
One of the most monumental songs, if we're talking about playing rhythm guitar, by the way
Best song ever

Where can I find Val Valentin mix?
@@willowufgood261 I think the Val Valentin mix is what's on the album. The closet mix is the one Lou Reed mixed which is different

Doug Yule was a fantastic edition. Some of the best VU songs were during his tenure.
Barely hear Doug's voice on the harmony on this version.
Doug Yule is great! Love him in the band!
I’ve read somewhere that Sterling Morrison said at bigger venues the band were able to turn it up even further. They were kind of scaling it back at the Matrix because it was a small nightclub.
Not a damn thing wrong with Doug Yule or his keyboards. This seriously rocks!
1:01 That guitar has influence U2 for sure.
Better tempo and more balls than the studio version - the real inventors of punk!
Mister Jones nah... too fast and vocals and Cale's work much better on studio version..
john colon Not talking about 3rd album...
@spiritual Meditation Music: John Cale wasn't on the studio version.. He had nothing to do with this song. The VU were great after JC too.
The studio version is perfect for what it is, and this live version is perfect for what *_IT_* is. In my opinion it’s apples and oranges. Both bring me an equal amount of joy.
One of my fav velvet songs!

Loving Mo here.

Sore Wrist!
Punkowcy mieli od kogo ściągać ;)
Thought is was a weird Beatles cover...
Or as a recorded act
