Mykal was one of the OG founding members of VoicePlay back in 1997, when they were still in high school and decided to start a barbershop quartet. But he left right after highschool to sing on Broadway. That school sure had some talent!!! 🤩🤩😍😍

But honestly this video/song shows that as EXTRA as Voiceplay can be (and we love it) they can equally strip back everything and show just how incredible their vocal range and arranging talents are. Pure angelic godliness!
I deeply love this. It always brings tears - partially from the sheer gorgeousness of it, and partially because they present unapologetically as good friends. (Apparently Mykal and Cesar just met as they worked on this and the prior one, but quickly became close friends.) In a world where prickly behavior and jousting for dominance between guys is still normal, this is deeply comforting. This is the world I want to live in. A world where people are at ease.
I had been hoping that VoicePlay would cover "Stand By Me" eventually and then they did. Layne did a great job arranging it. Mykal was the perfect collaborator for this one. Apparently Layne, Geoff, Earl, and Mykal sang this song together when they were teenagers. A lovely song with a beautiful message about true friendship.
Mykal did Be Prepared in September with them. That one focused on Geoff's voice, so they promised that another one was coming that would feature Mykal. This was the result.
If you want to see more Mykal Kilgore, you should react to 'Stars and the Moon' from MCC Miscast24. I love his performance in that one, and, honestly, the term 'miscast' couldn't be more wrong, him singing that song is PERFECT casting!

Mykals voice when fluttering like an elegant butterfly in that headvoice part gets the reaction in me that you felt - EVERY time I listen to... does that make me weird!? 😮😅🎉❤
The vertical recording is standard for most of Voiceplay's 'Minis'. A lot of them are filmed (as if?) with a smartphone in the Oviedo mall where Pattycake (owned by Layne and former VP member Tony Wakim) is located. Some reactors occasionally group 3-4 Minis together and post a reaction to that. Just an interesting idea... 😜😘
In this case, filming vertically was dictated primarily by how much time that Mykal could be with them. The vertical cell phone format was just the fastest method. I do agree that the more simple staging and filming works incredibly well with this iconic song, though. Just voices and friendship.

Glad Mykal got to do a couple of full length videos (Be Prepared and Stand By Me) while he was down from Broadway. He was an original member through school and a couple of years later he wanted to do Broadway. Eli knew him from years ago but Mykal hadn't known Cesar. They had a ball in Be Prepared and then they did this and you said it right - it is gorgeous and the best version of the song for me. I hope he'll make a few stops more because he has a voice worth hearing - not to say that VoicePlay doesn't but it's a good group and blend so well together.
