- I had to make this part 2 video of the DJI Air 2S obstacle avoidance and APAS. I knew the Air 2S could do a much better job than I showed in part 1. The Air 2S remains a technological "tour de force". Thank you for watching!

Good job on this test Marcus. The Air 2s is still a very capable drone.
Thank you Ryan! I agree, the Air 2S is very competent.
I sincerely hope "OLD Steady Air 2S" APAS is s better Assistant than it was for Air 3 last week. That was brutal to watch, and I'm quite sure it wasn't any LESS BRUTAL to experience firsthand ✋️🤚. Im sure DJI is taking good care of you, and looking forward to an update soon.
Yeah, John, the Air 2S is one of those iconic drones. I'll do a follow up video on my experience with DJI.
For a short whole, they DID have APAS running at 4k60. BUT... only 1080p
This is from the very FIRST FW update: v02.04.16.40
for Air 2S on April 15, 2021:
* Added APAS when camera resolution is set to 1080p 48/50/60fps.
AIR 2S Introduced APAS 4.0, Occusync 3, ADS-B, and a 1" sensor in a smaller aircraft than anyone had seen at the time!
Air 2S release date:
4-15-21
Mavic Air 2:
4-27-20
Hi Marcus. Nice demo of the APAS. The Air2s was my first drone. I've had mine for 1 1/2 yrs now. Still like flying it. I plan on hanging on to mine for as long as I can.......👍
I'm with you Jim. The Air 2S is iconic!
Hi Marcus! Glad to see part 2 of the APAS on your Air 2S. You are way braver than I am! Full forward stick at a tree? My 2S is sent cautiously at an obstacle and my pucker factor goes through the roof as the obstacle fills my screen. It always misses, but it doesn't miss by what I would define as a comfortable margin. In that drone, APAS only works in Normal Mode. There is no OA in Sport Mode and in Cine Mode OA is limited to just Brake Mode.
Limited flight time is my one complaint about my 2S. Twenty-five minutes and I'm flying on fumes. I routinely turn OA off when I am high enough that it serves no purpose. I contacted DJI and was told that setting the OA to off does indeed save battery power! To that end, you don't have to go back to the safety menu to change the OA setting. There is a small icon on the display screen, right above the RTH icon, that you can touch to cycle through the three OA modes.
Out of curiosity, did you even consider trying to fly it against the side of the building where you crashed your Air 3?
I did not know that OA is on in Brake mode, when Subject Scanning is selected! There is always something new to learn. Your videos are the place to learn them! Thanks!
Thank you Fred! I had a great time putting this video together!
Always a pleasure flying with you. Enjoyed the re-try of APAS. When I do my golf course videos a I always use 4K/60. I may have to rethink that and go with 30 to take advantage of APAS. Hate to accidentally run into a pesky tree. Thanks for sharing and take care.
Thank you Doug. I just can't bring myself to sell me Air 2S. It's just too darn good!
Good testing of APAS, it seems to work well on the older Air 2S. And colors on the trees were beautiful that day. Great video, and thanks for sharing Marcus.
Thank you Ron! The Air 2S really aced it!
Good video, thank you for that. I learned something new about the air 2s, i did not use active track and subject scanning much so far on my air 2s. I still love that drone and i would not switch it for the air 3. So much fun flying the little beast and it still delivers awesome footage, photo and video aswell. I was wondering:when you activate subject scanning and apas is deactivated the drone still is able to avoide objects in a degree. My question:when you activate apas and subject scaning aswell, would the drone behave different flying around objects when both systems are activated? Could subject scanning slow the drone down and does it fly’s different when it’s in bypass modus ? That’s atleast what i thought when i watched this video 🤔😉 I’ve got to try it myself and see what happens, looking forward to your next video’s 👍🏻
I've never tried that. It might be worth an experement. Be careful though. 🙂
I use an iMac for all my computer storage and processing. I am having a problem with such large files from the Dji drone. How do you store your files or do you compress them? One 4 minute video can be a large as 1.26 GB and more.
I store most of my video files on external drives. I've been thinking about an NAS device.
Marcus, Another great video. I was waiting for this one after your last test. I DO NOT rely on APAS but I do trust it to help me out sometimes. I always tell others that ask not to depend on APAS but to use it as an additional tool in the kit. I find the APAS on the Air 2S works much better than I ever gave it credit for. The other tool Id personally like to see more information in is ADS-B. I understand the concept of how it works but again I rely more on my ears and eyes to alert me to nearby aircraft. Maybe you could do a video or two on ADS-B and show how good it really is. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! I've done a few videos on ADSB or Air Sense as DJI calls it. Many people are not aware that you can adjust the sensitivity.
In my personal opinion the Air 2s is the best drone to use when following me on my E-bike. I have the mavic air 2 which will lose me when turning around or getting behind obstacles such as tree branches. Also the mini 3 pro will lose me after reaching speeds above 12 mph. Anything under that it’s good and the Air 3 is about the same. I still haven’t tested the mini 4 pro just been working and haven’t had time yet. But traveling around 15-20 Mph in peddle assist 3 the Air 2s can keep up with me and if it does get behind a little it aggressively catches up. Personally I think it is the extra 2 sensors that gives it the capability to still detect obstacles when pitched forward the other drones just look at the ground when they are pitched forward and they can only detect at slower speeds. If Dji releases the Air 3s I would expect them to add the extra 2 front top sensors as on the Air 2s
My worry about tracking with the Air 2S is having it inadvertently swing sideways into an object. It does a great job at tracking though.
My dad used to tell me, newer doesn’t mean better. Glad to see the air2s still has it
Yeah, the Air 2S is a good one! 🙂
I notice 2 things
1. It looks like your lens is dirty I can see this when you do a turn with lots of sky.
2. I also noticed the props or the shadow in the shot several times.
Good video, as I am looking maybe buy a Air2s because I want to use it with the insta360 Sphere.
Yes, that insta 360 sphere is custom built for the Air 2S. I've seen some great video from it.
Hi Marcus, nice flight. My Air 2s lands 100% right on the H of a round landing pad. vbg
Ha! I loaned my round pad to Ted Bohlman yesterday! 😀
Not a stretch to say iconic drone AND iconic cell tower! Nice flight and APAS demo with a great drone Marcus!
Thank you John! My favorite cell town er for sure! 😀
A+++, Marcus I'm loving the Air2S and I too will be hanging on to mine!
Thank you John! I'm hanging on to mine as well.
Thanks for sharing. Would love to see you do a video on Air Sense on the Air 2 S and the Air 3 S. Would have like to see the Mini 4 Pro have had that feature.
Air Sense is a great feature. I've done a few videos on it, maybe it's time for another.
Beautiful fall foliage. Good demo of the Air 2S, a long-time favorite of yours. Looking forward to your report of DJI’s response to your issue with the Air 3. Cheers, buddy.😊
Thank you George! I could be perfectly happy if the Air 2S was my only drone.
@@IdahoQuadcopter That is a golden endorsement, my friend.
The only reason why I sold my Air 2s was the flight time that is its biggest down fall it really sucks.
I hear you. That's a common complaint. 👍
When you say not to,let the drone fly sideways during Activetrack, can’t you turn off sideways flight and does that stop the drone from flying sideways during Activetrack?
I suppose you could, but that would not let the drone go around some objects.
@@IdahoQuadcopter maybe it would force it to figure out another way to go around. It would be GREAT if you tried it in another video 😃
Nice one awesome testing video Marcus ❤❤❤❤ great Drone!!
I'm glad you enjoyed it Djaleks!!! Thank you!
As mentioned in your previous video yes, the drones with 360 OA are going much closer to objects before taking decisions for changing trajectory.
Can’t understand why DJI is acting like this but certainly it is causing much more troubles.
Maybe the objects resolution is lower due to the wider FoV…
In doubt I’m not using it much in my Air3 and Mini4 until they release some relevant updates.
I do like how the Air 2S reacts early. 👍
While OA distance is less on Air 3/Mini 4 Pro, it's not the case with Mavic 3 series. In fact they had to dial back sensitivity early on in 2022 when Mavic 3 would start rising for objects up to 200 meters away. I have to turn off APAS if I want to get really close to things. It also would jump lake a scalded cat while taking off near things lol. Maybe is less processing power on the Mini 3/4 and Air 3, or how they set the sensors up -the cameras themselves seem capable.
@BlairAir thanks for the clarification. It seems the sensors on Air3-Mini4 are the same used on Mavic3 series, so in line of principle the computation should be the same .
Very strange they are using such different logics as the upward facing sensors of the Mavic are not coming into play in the most common OA scenarios.
Good video Marcus, you just have to be careful that you don't end up moving sideways into a tree. It's fine if the Air 2s goes up or down. I've found it pretty good like you did.
I agree Gerry. It's those sideways moves that'll get ya with the Air 2S.
It's getting a bit top heavy your cell tower there
Yeah, they keep adding on. 😄
It's certainly a nice compact drone and that 5.4K camera produces good footage, if they could come up with a longer lasting battery for it would be good which is something that is a big plus in the newer drones especially when you need more time for photos.
Yes, the battery related flight time could be better. I sure like the drone though. 👍
5:00 Mini 4 pro has subject scanning.
Thank you for the clarification!
Air2S is a beast.
Nice video Marcus
It sure is Bob! I love the Air 2S!
Awsome flight with that bird..
Thank you so much!
14:50 clean up and over 👍
True that John. I'm still working with DJI on the other deal.
Nice day and nice flight.
It was indeed a great day to fly, thank you!
Great video Marcus
Thank you Angie!!
air 2s still a great drone
I agree! It's one of my all time favorites!
Marcus, I'm glad you finally stopped messing around and got that bird in the air! 👈🥸👉,👈🥸👉,👈🥸👉. Let me know how the Air 3 repairs are going!
Ha! Thank you! 😀 Yes, I'll do a follow up on the Air 3 for sure.
