Straw is too expensive and this ring is outdoors. It is a training ring. I'm glad you liked it. I was the assistant coach at this school for three years.

How do they stop grass and weeds getting on it outside I wonder?

Glass bottles, bare feet and bare hands, what could go wrong?

I know. I thought the same thing. This is Japan. Everything here is traditional. And Yes, one broke while they were making it. I'm sure someone used it because it was all that they had and then the person who learned from him coppied him exactly. I'm sure a piece of wood would be better.

Champagne bottles are incredibly thick heavy glass... I think that would be better than beer bottles?!

I'm done with team sports in the United States. Sumo is now my spectator sport of choice.

Why do they use bottles? Why don't they use hammers?

This is a shot in the dark, but would you happen to know where one could purchase the fabric tawara used to construct the dohyo? At least in the US?

Your best bet is to make them. They charge so much. It's just canvas..

Would have been better if this guy didn't talk.

Maybe if you understood them, you wouldn't mind. I made this as a memory of the event. One of those boys soon passed away after the making of this video so I kind of don't mind them talking.
