The first ever racing game I got into, 26 years ago (god is it really that long!). Since then I have always been into racing games via Xbox, Gamecube, PS2, PS3, Xbox 360 etc
At the year 2000, my very first Gran Turismo was the first one. Gran Turismo was the reason I'm into cars and my dad introduced it when I was 4 years old. I completed the first game on my own, because my dad said that I need to do what I want to do with my own capabilities so he let me play the game and enjoy everything, tinker everything, do whatever I want, just anything And now I'm 26. That PS1 might be somewhere but I hope it's still around.

The replys. No one ever talks replays. My favorite thing to do when strategizing how to win a race or just goofing around with friends and family after a split screen race. Still the best race replays in the business... and i will never buy into something i can not own outright. PERIOD
Used to go take my PlayStation to my then girlfriend's dad's house as he was into cars and Top Gear and he loved Gran Turismo. We would always watch the replays after a good race just as a spectacle to watch. The graphics look rough now but back then it was really something to see your own race and car in 3D setting.
This game was the greatest for me. In 2024 when we are used to full HD graphics, surround sound, eSports and online racing, and genuine car engine sounds and DLC/patch updates to games, this first incarnation launched with everything already on the disc (for better or for worse). And this game did not disappoint. The arcade racers at the time (e.g. Sega Rally) had only a limited number of rally, racing or high end supercars to choose from, yet here, we could drive real cars that were on streets around us. And we could tune them to do crazy things. The graphics were sensational for the day with amazing attention to detail around driving feel (you won't confuse a FWD with a RWD) and replicated how the cars loaded up their suspension while cornering. It achieved this on a modest home console OVER a quarter of a century ago. The original GT also set the template for licences, career development, championship series and placing the cars as the true stars - something that is the norm nowadays. It's difficult to articulate the impact this game had on its release. The car sounds were a bit out at times (Supra RZ) and car handling could verge on the silly (GT-R LM Edition), but in totality, no GT game has been able to recapture the magic of this first title. After all, everything that came after refined the original idea, but never actually carried the same impact. How could it?
I'm looking forward to the rest of this series, great job! The cars that'll bring me the most nostalgia will be the 1996 Viper GTS and the NSX-R LM GT2 Race Car. Though for gameplay elements, the sound effects oddly enough are one of the most nostalgic things to me in that game. They still sound so satisfying to hear .
Yeah remember this game very well... A Matrix blast on my first Playstation console 26 years ago and this masterpiece... Long days and nights were put into this game... Buying Playstation magazines to find out new tricks and tips on how to tune the cars because social media or related online groups didn't exist back in 98. I was then a 17 year old mechanic passing his engineering diploma... Whoooaaaahhhh what's the gold times back then. And yes the replay mode was real art for those times.
It was firstly more famous in the World Rally Championship group A and WRC, Japan races and firstly this car was designed for the joy of driving and absolutely for rallies. And then there was his place in the video games.
High resolution mode you had in time trial mode on night city track only there was a special option for this not in the race. I was lucky back in 98 because my TV has PAL/SECAM and euro scart connection for 60fps or 50fps. TV with PAL wasn't enough for higher fps if correct.
Ok, so the stupic "silver gets you nothing" implementation has been there since the beginning? Seriously, who ever came up with that, I want to ask if they're all right. It just doesn't make any sense at all, and is in many ways downright demotivating, because the step from bronze to gold is nearly impossible to make for casual (controller) players, unless you sink hours and hours of practice into it - with virtually no reward. Apart from that rant, nice video! :)
GT1 was SO impressive back then! NOTHING could compare!

Always has been...always will be! Makes the AI driven cars saints! 😂
