Daniel, nice video and explanation. The failure point is most commonly cracking. You can tell when they crack, you will hear a ticking noise upon start up, that will go away after warm up. The reason they crack is partly material choice, but also the thinness of the metal. The problem is the exhaust lengthens longitudinally as it heats up (expansion). You will notice at the back of the muffler between muffler and rear of car), there is a metal bow, which acts as a spring to allow for this expansion. The problem is it is apparently too stiff and does not have enough "give". Capristo has some brackets that allow for more movement and expansion, and in combination with the MK2 headers, appears to greatly reduce the incidence of failure. If you go aftermarket, be sure you get the blankets, or you will cook everything in the engine compartment made of rubber. (ceramic coating is not a substitute for heat shielding or blankets) It may take a couple years or more, but stuff with start failing....rubber boots on the bosch sensor connectors, parking brake cable failures, etc. You can try to shield individual components, but you are much better off with the blankets. And with aftermarket, I would still use the Capristo brackets. Also be aware that many aftermarket exhaust manifolds/headers (same thing) are not four into two, into one design like the factory...they are four into one. While the four into one will often produce a bit more top end hp, you may lose some low end torque. Also the four into one can change the tone of the exhaust lower...which is not always desirable.

Thanks for the pointer, Dan. To be fair to most vehicles I see for sale, the manifold has been replaced. However, if there are issues with the later manifolds as well, then that's a little disconcerting. I'm also easily confused, so the jump between header and manifold, has the old grey matter being put through a mincer! Which one's, what?
Based on the cost for even a Fabspeed setup (more expensive), it seems like cheap insurance to swap them out. Reminds me of the rod bearing fiasco with the e92 M3.
