Hi Simon, regarding the foil on the top of the can, it's more than marketing. I have come across beers here in Australia where there has actually benn dots of mold growing on top of the can. I presume it from beer being sprayen on the can and not properly rinsed along the packaging line. Whenever I've seen it, it has been on cans that approaching best before date, i.e been sitting on a shelf or in a cool room for almost a year. I even tried pouring boiling water from the kettle over the top of the can to get rid of it, as I didn't really want the beer running over spots of b;ack/green mold as it pours from the can to the glass. Was unable to scrub it off properly so they went in the bin. It is a rare thing to actually see anything growing on the can but that doesn't mean that it's 100% sanitised. I think it's a brilliant idea and I wish more breweries would do it but most will not as they are just focussed on bottom line profits. Good review, I am going to try and hunt some of these beers down. Cheers.

Also people putting cans on shelves in shops may have not washed their hands or have bugs. It's much more hygienic if you sup from the can.

I always wipe the top of any can where the lid is exposed in the store (as opposed to in a box) - dust, mold, etc. Very thoughtful to put a protective wrap on it, i don't think purely marketing was on their mind, but it does look elegant and inviting.

Exactly what I thought as so many people will drink straight from the can. Not everyone is civilised like us and uses glasses. 😇

Check out your local polish shops. They’ve had Volfas Engelman in mine for the last 12 months. If you can get your hands on their ‘Galaxy’- black and gold can- you’re in for a treat.

It's owned by Olvi - Finland's biggest independent brewery. They brew great beers in their own right. It will be interesting to see whether Olvi have managed to get Finnish supermarkets to stock this beer. I have visited Latvia and Estonia, and the general standard of brewing in both countries is very good - good water and intelligent people (in the past, low IQ people didn't survive the harsh winters)

Just got back from Turkey, and the Efes cans I was buying had those foil things on top too.

Sadly Asda world food aisles tend to vary from region to region. What's there often depends on your local "immigrant" community. In my bit of SE London it's mainly West African, Caribbean and Polish. I'm going to Asda today and will check though. May strike lucky.

Tried this about 6 weeks ago and have been buying since, bought 4 yesterday for £6.80 less my discount 😉 It's a belter. I'm hoping they continue with this and I love the idea of the foil cap.

I remember when I was in Lithuania in 2017, for a jazz festival. Volfas engelman had just released a new beer I think it was called Flanders Pint, I remember it being a Belgian style dark beer 6%. The taste was indescribably amazing... Was in Lithuania again in 23, apparently they discontinued it years ago... I was very sad to hear that.

Another comment on the foil covering, I was told some years ago (by an old publican, obviously) that people shouldn't ever drink directly from a bottle in a pub because, depending where and how the bottles were stored (maybe an outdoor shed) it wasn't unusual for rats to run over the stored bottles and spray ratty weewee over the tops of the bottles. With something like Budweiser that would clearly improve the flavour, but not with something good. And Weil's Disease is no joke.

Specially bud lite, wud vastly improve the flavour not that there is any to start

      @stephengreen3367 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I was told the same by a dietitian. Never drink direct from a can or bottle without washing the top first. While the stuff is stored in warehouses rats and mice piss all over it.

Had this one last night & thoroughly enjoyed it, like you found I it to be very refreshing the sort of beer that would really hit the spot on a hot day after a hard days work. Definitely a quality brew & a 10/10 all day long! Thanks for bringing these beers to my attention as I would never have found them. Asda need to get plenty & stick em in the beer aisle!!

    Interesting!
That foil is a good idea. I've had many dirty cans over the years; it sometimes seems like some breweries can or store their beer in bogs... 😅

Managed to track these down at my nearest big ASDA. The lager is amazing. What a find. Absolutely nothing better at £1.70 a pint! They also had Balta Weissbier on offer for a 4 pack. Also picked up 2 cans of Blanc. Total game-changer if they keep selling it.

I had a nightmare last night that every pub and shop only served / stocked - Bud Light. I am never eating cheese late at night again! Just been to ALDI no Octoberfest beers but going to a nearby big ASDA and Tesco today. Can't wait! The only thing you can do with Bud Lite is to mix it with Skol super or equivalent lol.

My favourite style. Love Alagash White if you ever see it for sale.
Glucose Syrup, or just table sugar will be added prior to fermentation. It is pure yeast food, and will add alcohol, without adding body. Will act to dry the beer out actually.
You can't add sugar post fermentation unless you want a bottle bomb or you are naturally carbonating your beer if thats what you want. Either way it would not add any sweetness to a final beer IMO. Happy to be corrected on that point though.

Does Simon mean corriander as I thought banana and clove are more present in German weissbiers ? 🤔

What is a big Asda ? We have one that is Morrisons/Sainsbury size but smaller than a Tesco Extra ? 🤔

I had a playoff with the Volfas Hefe can vs bottle last night; the bottle won (tasted crisper) but agree with your thoughts - arguably a best-in-show weizen. Haven't found anywhere selling this Blanc though, I'll keep looking...

Blanc is really nice! Lithuanian & Polish beers are really underrated, imo. Love Żywiec as well.

Belgium beers often have candy sugar added. Candy sugar is a mixture of fructose and glucose. It really should increase the ABV and make the beer drier.

I've been to 4 different Asda to try to get these 3 different Volfas beers, and none stock them. One of them was a "supercentre" in Coryton, Cardiff but no joy. Went to customer services in each one and they can't (or can't be bothered more likely) to go onto the system to check where they are stocked. Simon, which one did you get this range from please?

On your advice, I went and bought all three of the Volfas-Engelman beers at ASDA. I agree about the lager and the Hefeweissen, but I didn't like this Belgian one....too perfumed for me.

A certain other channel reviewed this around a year ago and didn't like the Fructose and Glucose Syrups in the ingredients. I didn't think you would like those additives either? 😮

You kept saying 'clove', but the main herb in Belgian Witbiers is corriander. If it's a mistake on your part don't worry, I get confused and can at times never remember the name of . . . erm . . . it's haldi in Hindu. 🙄
