When it comes to Fanservice, the more cakey kind has two sides to it. The people who find older characters to be attractive or in the reverse. What do you or anyone else in this pinned comment think about a underage age person crushing on an older age character?

Fan service can be good when timed just right and is used moderately but if it’s placed when the plot starts getting engaging then it can often bring down the momentum.
this is something that Mieruko-chan suffers from, it is such a good horror slice of life anime that falls into we need to show boobs to keep the interest in the series. if they were to take out the fan service it would make the series better as you can focus in how well it handles every other aspect of the series.
Ironic part with Yugioh is that the card game is meant for kids. At the age +13 and up (official in the konami site). So Tori fits the age range for the kids even if its creepy. So we can argue morals here depending on age.
The slowing of momentum could also theoretically be used to shock yourself back to reality of the world you are viewing being a terrifying and horrible place
Endgame ended a nearly eleven year storyline. Their flagship characters just left. People have grown tired of the mcu. So in order to make fans watch a show or movie they place fanservice in it. This is mearly a possible explanation for the increased amount of fanservice in the mcu
I hardly watch the new MCU movies anymore. Partially because I think I’m becoming tired of them reusing the same structure for almost every solo film for a new hero. Another is because most of the characters I liked are gone due to Endgame. I just don’t have as much motivation to keep up with the MCU.
@@javelinmaster2 I'd say No Way Home was Marvel's best use of fanservice because it added a lot to the film in terms of story. Shame it wasn't the case elsewhere in the MCU.
An example of Sentai fanservice, (besides the fan service) I remember them bringing back Gai for a gag where a bunch of villainesses and female characters fell in love with him. Then Gokaiger which is the season of fanservice, bringing back returning actors. Which was used as a celebration for Sentai as a whole, and to make kids happy after suffering through earthquakes. Heisei Generation Forever, most fond moment in the movie was when Takeru Satoh returns in the role of Ryotaro.
Or with Beyond Generations when we have Hiroshi Fujioka's son play the younger version of his father's character. At the same time, No Way Home had the return of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. These are good examples of fanservice as well.
I feel a good type of Fanservice comes from Kirby games. The games are often PACKED with fanservice, though they almost never impact the game themselves. Often they're callbacks or returning characters, and they're always implemented well into the game (Kabula in Robobot, Pon and Con in Star Allies, Dual Needle from 64 returning as Clutter Needle, etc.).
Fan service regarding age in anime is always a weird area. You can have teenagers with the bodies of adult models and you can have adults who look like 12 year olds.

Since I'm assuming the girl in the thumbnail is from Yu Gi Oh, I have an interesting bit of trivia about the game. Players being unhygienic became such an issue, the official rule book now requires players to bath and wear clean clothes before playing, or else they'll be penalized for being stinky. Let that sink in...
Sounds like alcohol. Used properly can make the party better, sometimes even more glamorous. But when there's too much party can turn into disgusting mess
@@RegalPixelKing I tend to think of plot and fanservice as two separate things. Fanservice is a "reward" for viewers that occurs in a plot, whereas the plot is the overarching story
@@dislikebomb6680 In some cases that is the case, but in other cases fanservice and the story are so interconnected that they are the same thing. No Way Home is a perfect example. Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire, as well as the villains from their respective movies showing up was 100% fanservice, and the plot could not have worked without that fanservice. Something being plot relevant does won't stop something from also being fan service.
To use a cooking analogy, Fan service is like a strong spice, not every show needs it, a little at the right time or in the right way can enhance a show, and some shows are built completely around it. Some people will avoid it and some people can't get enough of it

I think it would have been more accurate to call Multiverse of Madness and She-Hulk and a lot of stuff lately that twist the fan service and kill or disrespect the characters as "Fan Disservice"
Kirby star allies is the perfect example of proper fan service. Have the characters still be themselves, then also have them play the role they were always supposed to have. (i'm not just talking about the dream friends, I'm talking about pon and con, too)
I think that the fanservice saved that game, Star Allies wasn't very popular but then everyone started to have fun playing their favorite characters and we got an extra mod where every character could shine.
I love the fanservice in Star Allies. It's my favourite part about the game and honestly why I like the game more than I think I should. Sure a lot about the game leaves me disappointed as a Kirby fan but they brought back my boy Gooey so now I'm legally obligated to give it a pass.
"Metal Gear Solid 4" is the perfect example of that, as that game focuses on answering questions that were never meant to be answered after "Metal Gear Solid 2" and on excessive fan service at the cost of story and characters.
@@William5000000 Oh, you mean a perfect example of what not to do. Alright. I’ve heard that the Yakuza series is really good at doing this correctly though. I’ve also heard that some entries have pacing issues but that’s true of every game franchise.
The sad part about Yu-Gi-Oh fanservice is that they actually did it right in GX. I mean, GX had just cameos, didn't use them to sell the show and then gave the show a big fanservice final episode. I mean come on, Yugi vs. Jaden (Yes I use the dub names COME AT ME) is pure fanservice don't deny it.
Not really Compare to the other Yugioh spain offs GX was the most connected to DM since a lot of DM characters have showed up in the show including Yugi in the first episode But they definitely could have done it in a different way, like make Jaden duel grown up Yugi instead of making him go back in time to do it
What about the whole episode dedicated to Jaden out right having a duel with Dark Magician Girl? She had an entire Dark Magician Girl themed deck and everything
Yugioh is actually really annoying in fanservice. Not in the upskirt shots but the obsessive references to DM. We can't go a week without a new piece of Dark Magician, Blue-Eyes or Red-Eyes support being announced. They have since moved on to give us more cards from other eras of Yugioh but those 3 decks still more attention many other niche strategies. Shout outs to Payne 96 who has been waiting 1400+ days for new Volcanic Support.
And yet somehow Red-Eyes continues to suck complete ass- Why? CUZ ITS BOSS MONSTERS CAN'T BE BROUGHT BACK WITH ITS OWN FUCKING REVIVAL TRAP! They either A. Don't contain "Red-Eyes" in the name or B. "Cannot be Special Sunmoned except by X"
I really hate how much attention DM gets from both the fanbase and from Konami themselves. It gets a treatment that most other series don't get, and it takes away the spotlight from other series. Yugi always appears front and center, loads of monsters inspired by Dark Magician and the "Eyes Dragons", nonstop DM support like how Weevil, Espa Roba, and Mako are getting more support than Axel, DM is the one that gets the most merch and stuff made for it, all three movies have involved DM, basically every well known Yugioh meme comes from DM, Mako replaced Nasch on the cover of a set in the west, Rush Duels give way more acknowledgement to DM than other series who usually just get a nod or card inspired by them at best, and of course the nonstop support for Dark Magician and Blue Eyes. And somehow that isn't even all of my examples. Yugioh gives Pokemon a run for it's money when it comes to showing off the first generation.
Most of this you can blame DM fan base and most of the older player base who hasn't cared about YGO since GX or 5Ds. Konami will never stop pandering to DM fans.
@@-emerald-1553 I personally don't think Yugioh takes away from the other series. I can understand the frustration but Yugioh pandering to DM ain't the same as Pokemon since that's leagues worse. Gen 7 of pokemon literally had all regional variants of gen 1 pokemon. Like I said, I understand where ur coming from but personally, I don't think Yugioh is that bad. Obviously it is but to a lesser extent
Don't forget the annoying effects DM archetype support gets too when it comes to new support, where they give the card it's main effects and then just give it a powerful extra effect for no reason other than because DM, like opponent can only summon 1 monster at a time, opponent can't activate anything when this card attacks, just banish any opponents card for summoning Dark Magician etc etc...
Fairy Tail is the peak of what is wrong with arbitrarily adding in fan service. "Hey this character was just resurrected after a very sad mourning period, what should we do with her?" "Let's detrack from a pivotal tournament arc and have a bikini scene in the arena with her in it!" Years later: "Hey let's bring back the worst kind of Team Rocket rip offs and have the girls dance in tight clothes." "Oh let's have character's be tortured but focus on their chest and crotch areas for way too long." Series where they try to act all edgey then have a really really bad fan service joke in there may make me peeved for a moment but Fairy Tail has had such a weird fetish with it going on. Like they think their audience can't handle 5 seconds of action with out chesticles bouncing everywhere in between.
In their defense, Fairy Tail is not exactly a serious plot driven story. Fairy Tail is more of a comedy action Manga that doesn't take itself seriously like most typical shonen animes so they are allowed to play with their fanservice. Also, the fanservice just doesn't apply to the girls but it also applies to the men so it is basically fair game for everyone involved. And another thing, the girls in FT are not reluctant fanservice girls, apart from Lucy, the female characters really don't care. They do not feel shame in showing off their bodies to another and they just doing it because they want to not because the plot demands them to. @@siphemanana2551 in my opinion the problem is that it expects to not be taken seriously in the wrong way, it doesn't present itself as a genuinely funny comedy as in the world and scenarios are wacky and weird but nonetheless make sense within the world they exist in Example: Monkey D. Luffy needing to eat copious amounts of meat to ensure his rubber body remains stretchy, rather than something that exists within a vacuum that the reader is meant to point and laugh at because the author demands it but instead uses the "it's comedy, it's not meant to be taken seriously" excuse, which can whittle it down to a show for toddlers, due to a lack of coherency Example:Almost all females in Fairy Tail have the same body type(big boobs and slim figures), this raises a question as to why the men are so pervy or horny, because you can see a woman almost as sexy as Lucy or Erza walking down the street any other day. This denotes the joke of men being pervy to just being straight up spineless cucks who hyperventilate at even their own female cousin. An arguably better joke would be the men thirsting over flat or overweight women whenever the objectively beautiful women(Cana, Erza, Mira etc) are suddenly undressed or exposed,this is giving the fans "service" without it not destroying the value of the story
I've actually started watching Yugioh Zexel. The first thought I had on seeing Kotori was "My belt is longer than that skirt.". Things only got worse when they introduce the cat girl who licks her lips at Yuma (the MC/audience surrogate).
Zexal is good, except of being a retelling of DM. What I liked was the Numbers hunting, and then... throw it away and collecting NEITHER ALL OF THEM just the half for the LORE. MC with a dense characterization, a spirit who guide him on being good and the rivals that becomes friends, and you can't say to me that...SPOILER [and that the love interest doesn't even have that lot of screen time... not even is important in the plot. Literally here the BROMANCE is stronger than girls] FINAL EPISODE is literally Yugi Vs Atem.
I can understand why the legacy characters in Arc-V needed to be alternate versions to fit the narrative, their main issue was the way they handled the GX and Zexal cast because it took way too long for them to be introduced while the show was already rushing to its ending. Also Arc-V was already introducing way too many new characters in an already bloated cast which is why the tournament arc in the Synchro Dimension took forever.
I think it's primarily gen z & millinials from the west with a certain "Tumblr/political correctness" mindset (I noticed a lot of girl "artists" especially have this mindset), and those in Japan with a west influenced mindset, that view it this way. Those who truly understand the culture, goal, money, etc, will usually appreciate the anime/manga more.
Fan service of the latter variety hits different in different anime for me. Sometimes it supplements the wonderful story, character development, or action scenes (e.g. my fav series Kill la Kill). Sometimes it's just the main focus of a stupid/sophomoric show (e.g. Keijo!!!!! or Senran Kagura). Finally, it can be laughed away as pure satire (Shimoneta). Interestingly enough, I enjoy all three usages depending on the circumstances.
Something I always found interesting about the fanservice in Keijo is just how seriously they treat it. The fact that they have training montages for their butts, have special named techniques for various ways of hitting with their boobs and butts, and the fights are treated like a Dragon Ball Z battle. it's so silly it somehow loops back to being endearing. And it was also interesting just how many puns they managed to put into the special names.

Gundam Build series. Cameos, references and injokes to the franchise. Yet the stories never suffered from the fan service. Plus build fighters had Ramba Ral as a main supporting Character.
An interesting way Yu-Gi-Oh did fanservice as in service to the fans was in the one of the storylines that are told through the cards (to give an explanation, most archetypes in Yu-Gi-Oh have their own lores, most of the time self-contained to them and a few other archetypes, however there are also some bigger storylines that have a big number of archetypes be apart of them, like for example the Abyss storyline which sees the archetypes of Dogmatika, Tri-Brigade, Sprigans, Despia, Swordsoul, Icejade, Therions, Spright, and Bystial interact togethers in a storyline that mostly revolves arounds the Fallen of Albaz). The Duel Terminal Storyline is the longest running storyline the game has had, starting in the 5D'S era of the game, and ending in the Arc-V era (technically they're still released cards for the archetypes to this day, but they're also not new additions to the story and more like ways to fill-in for some unclear events while supporting said old decks). One of the archetypes released in the latest season of Duel Terminal is called Qliphort. At the end of the World Legacy storyline (a storyline that started in the Vrains era of the game), one of the final cards is Avida, Rebuilder of Worlds, who is a god that recreates that planet the characters lived on after it got massively fucked up. Now one of the interesting part of Avida's design is that it has cores very similar to the one present on the Qliphorts, which would connect the Duel Terminal and World Legacy storyline by implying the Qliphorts used to be part of Avida.

Senran Kagura got done so dirty in terms of fanservice with each game passing. Like yeah it has some horny moments, but that was at least in the case of you going into the series knowing what to expect. I liked how each girl actually had depth to their characters and the way they interacted with one another was entertaining and had me eager to see more. Sadly after Estival Verses it started to focus more on the fanservice side of things and now every girl is just a one note joke.
SK from what I’ve read has some pretty interesting lore when it comes to the setting and it’s characters. It just sucks that they never really expand upon it. Like I’m generally curious about the relationship between Asuka’s grandparents, or the history behind the yoma demons.
Then you have Ikkitousen which is mostly fanservice and has alot of depth and story. But the story went out of pocket and the lore is now more confusing than a Kingdom Hearts plot.
What do you mean "after?" They started loosening the plot since Shinovi Versus. Least we got Deep Crimson afterwards. It's a tragedy what happened to this series.
@@MrRAGE-md5rj I’m sorry but the plot of SK was bare bones, nonsensical, basic and nothing spectacular it was the same stuff you’d see anywhere else in any other anime and most of the time they really tried way to hard being over dramatic in some instances you already know no one is going to die so why even have those conversations about it and that’s another thing the VN take way to long to get to the point then finally gameplay comes but it’s only 5 mins while I’m reading for like 20 last I checked this was a game not a VN. The characters are cool and all but it came off more as a character driven series than a story one and to be honest fans should stop being disingenuous pretending that it’s something deep when it really isn’t it’s surface level and makes the characters slightly interesting at best I can get sad backstories, generic monsters in any other game and series. The series was always silly even in the beginning the demon monsters have booba for crying out loud I’m guessing it’s because their female but still even their a tad bit silly despite looking completely out of place for something like SK but despite what I think I am open to hearing others opinions on it.
I think a good example of fanservice, or at least a better one, is Kirby. Kirby does a lot of fanservice, from referencing or remaking fights against old bosses, reintroducing old copy abilities, and then there was Star Allies.
Controversial example, when most of the trailers for The Last of Us 2 predominantly featured Ellie and Joel. Yet another character is more extensively featured than Joel was
How about serving the fans oh ya know, quality storytelling, character arcs, pathos, homage not references, earnest, meaningful and relatable tales that both nourish and challange its viewers/fans. Ya know... art?!
One fan service example I liked from Cardfight Vanguard recently was a lot more subtle. In the last season, it was a tournament arc and during a role call of all the participants, they played an instrumental version of Vanguard's first ever opening. It was so abript with no hint in advance so i immediately jumped from my spot on the couch. No returning characters or anything like that, just some music. Something like that is what I enjoy because it's subtle enough where it's not trying to use fan service as a crutch but rather an Easter egg to fans who've been with the series for a long time.
I like fan service when it's a reward for a payoff, like the Captain America service, or when anime only do it for certain scenarios like when the characters go to the beach.
My take is that the "cheesecake" style of fanservice certainly has its place, and that's in light-hearted downtime. If you want to throw in a "beach episode" or "hotspring scene" or even just have bouncing tits/pecs in a relaxed 'at home" scene that is fine, but shoving it in your face when the story/plot should be the thing that is supposed to be center stage is bad. You can even get away with characters that have a character "quirk" of being "well endowed" in one way or another and them showing that off on a regular basis in their wardrobe choices, but you should only be really emphasizing that character's "assets" in down time, you shouldn't be putting in close ups of your characters' tight ass or glistening pecks in the middle of a climactic fight scene
The thing with fanservice (the non-sexual kind) is you have to go all the way with it and understand what specifically fans want to see. It can be easy to screw up. As for the sexual stuff, I generally never like seeing this, but I can tolerate it if it at least feels naturally woven into the plot, but a lot of times though it just feels weird and forced. It also usually kills the pacing and at worst even makes characters feel very out of character.
Basically what Toriyama did in the Buu where they hype the children and Gohan where Goku and Vegeta steal the spotlight... by having Buu kill the sons alongside the planet as they just fight him again next episode
I think one of my favorite uses of fanservice is the citadel dlc for mass effect. It was a dlc all about the characters, the memes, and it still has slow emotional moments. It seemed like a genuine love letter to the community. New Star Wars battlefront ii also had great fanservice. “Hello there” or “roger roger” can be said by a lot of characters. It also added the arc trooper and the clone commando, two of the most loved clone variants in Star Wars.
I do like fanservice. I don't feel it detract from the history or denigrate the character as people says. This "war" on it feels more like a way to censor artists and make them abide to a standard they may not like. They ignore what the artist likes even though 70% of them in Japan are female, which some stated they do like their females characters in those ways.
It’s because the people who complain are people usually NOT born in Japan. In America; for example, they took great offense that dragon ball showed goku/gohan’s willy and how violent it was. The same people that marketed sexy female characters in their comic books are offended that Japan does it too. I mean hell even their cartoons are no different in terms of it.
@@DarkEclipse23 agreed, I don’t watch much TV anymore at all but meh, here in the west we kinda do the same thing anyways with sexual fanservice from weird sex jokes, flashy characters, and shows about nothing but sex, except maybe unlike Echi, we show a bit more of the sex for at least a second more. Also sometimes we tend to treat it as a good thing (for example GOT and Eurotha), vs how we treat anime fan service. Here in America we are guilty af for similar or the same things we criticize anime for, even down to the age problem of characters being sexualized despite the character not being over 18 tho in the case of us in America we instead tend to have adult actors playing as teenagers in live action shows doing sexual stuff.
Anime/Manga is so overstaturised with "Fanservice" that I don't like it and have to actively ignore it to enjoy the Anime/Manga. I also normalized it so much that I get confused when it doesn't happen. For example, I read this one manhwa "Survival story of a sword king in a fantasy world", really enjoy it and the Mc gets this feminine looking wizard partner, coming from a strict dragon hunting knight family and I think he's going to be revealed to be a girl and they're going to hock up even though there are no signs to that and it turns out he's a dragon a male dragon, not a girl, and I was so surprised that it happened and I realized that I seen Fanservice so much that I expected it everywhere.
13:56 Fire force was my first encounter with that kind of fan service and I dropped it 4 episodes in since it left a bad taste in my mouth, especially that scene.

When it comes to "sexy' fanservice, I don't mind it. It only really bothers me if it's placed in like a serious scene which kills the mood entirely. Other than that, "sexy" fanservice is pretty cool in my eyes, as someone who unironically has anime Highschool of the Dead, DxD, and Keijo as some of their all time favs. Then again, 30% of my personality is being down bad for anyone or anything so I might be biased in that regard. "Easter" fanservice is something I'm more mixed on. On one hand, having something being brought back or referenced in a franchise can feel great, especially if the people behind them are fans of it too. On the other hand, relying on too much on Easter Eggs or tickling the fans nostalgia boner can greatly harm the quality of certain media. It's why SW and Sonic fans are sick and tired of constant references to their pasts in every new entry.
I like sexy fanservice when used appropriately. Either build the scene or show about it. DxD is a good example of a show being built to be fanservicy. Even using Issei's skills of tearing down clothes strategically, and sometime subert it when an exhibitionist shows up. For Easter eggs. I remember when the MCU started. We had Hulk being targeted by Stark's missiles. Capttain meeting Starks father, etc. It was used Sparringly, but never took over the whole movie. Leading to the first Avengers to feel like a natural conclusion of it. A good Marvel(?) movie that handled Easter Eg fanservice was into the Spiderverse, since it involved the concept of uniqueness.
@@zionthedragon8866 I guess it really depends on the tone of the series in general. Like, I don't think the bikini scene in Star Trek Into Darkness fits that movie's tone in anyway. Alice Eve does look pretty good in it, I'll admit.

I definitely agree with this. My issue with easter fanservice is also about how it holds back the stories. As great as it is to see old characters pop up in Star Wars, it gets to the point where either the galaxy is a really small place, or the characters are living black holes that force the story to orbit them. As much as I enjoyed Book of Boba Fett when it started, the fanservice wore it down by having half the season be about the Mandalorian, bringing back Cobb and setting it in Tatooine again, despite other planets being available. And it also ruins the tension as well. As soon as Cobb was shot, I could just tell that he wasn't going to stay dead, because people liked him too much. Mando and Boba weren't in danger, because they were there specifically for the fanservice. And so you've got this huge group of people who the story won't kill, and so the bad guys and killer robots look really incompetent. Of course, I don't like it when they bring back a fan favourite just to kill off, as they are doing. So maybe what they should do is have these characters show up just long enough to show that its all connected. Or even just be mentioned, to establish that.
As long the fanservice isn’t ruining moments where I’m supposed to give a shit like with a serious or tense moment or when it isn’t the whole personality and purpose of a character, then bring on the anime tiddies anytime. One can question the necessity (distracting from the plot) of it if they want but to me, it gives the story a more personal feel and along with other things makes it feel alive, I’m not here to read/watch a creator’s checklist of plot points, it’s ok for things not tied to plot progression to happen.
I don’t entirely dislike fanservice, but it’s only at certain times in anime when I just ask “why?” Almost every instance of which I can remember absolutely stops the moment so we can see some 🍒 for a second or two. I especially despise it in Fire Force, which I recently stopped watching because it got annoying. Trust me I’d enjoy this stuff as much as the next guy but sometimes I just want a cool story and action instead of having that abruptly interrupted so that one fan can get a bonified high.
If you don't like the fanservice in Fire Force when why watch it in the first place??? This whole "I like it but at certain times" is almost meaningless as it feels like it has to fit you standards. Why no just watch Anime with zero fanservice like Kiznaiver or ERASED which are both good?
It's funny that Toei handles the Super Sentai and Kamen Rider series, knowing how to handle fan service ... being the same company that handles many anime with too much fan service.
The dumbest thing about kotori for me is that she has had more character development in her intro in Duel Links then in the 150ish ep anime. That shit is still stuck with me from the release of zexal in DL all the way to this day.

I personally don't mind as long as the show is honest about it or does something funny or clever with it, take Gintama for example, it uses almost no fan service but when it happens it's so over the top or it leads to a joke.

I see it like this: A character has no actual agency in their story. If a character is putting themselves in fanservice-y predicaments, that's a part of their character (or it's important to the plot/themes like Kill la Kill). If the author/director/camera is doing it, then it reveals the hand of the author and can break immersion. That's why I like when Bayonetta and Mai Valentine do it but hate it when it's happening to most of the female characters in Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Bayonetta and Mai are active participants. Xenoblade feels like I'm forced to watch a pervert trying to shove their camera up someone's skirt. Edit: I should add that I am female myself, so that might color my perception a bit to the more common forms of the male gaze.
I will say, it's strange that irl a lot of attractive girls will want this sort of camera thing you call "pervert" yet is not considered as much because they actively engage in it even when unaware but would fully support it. But girls who wear ridiculous clothing with really short skirts that it barely hides their panties and very lewd outfits when a camera shot gets an angle that brings out their lewdness of these FICTIONAL characters, then there is a problem and the artist or camera person is a "pervert?" I don't follow the logic. It's one thing if they suddenly act out of character and want to be lewd, or the world bends logic to make them look lewd, but idk about camera angles being a example of a true "pervert" As for that last term, I feel that's a bit sexist and disingenuous to bi/homosexual people and comes off to me as a bit anti-homo, possibly anit-[male]hetero, and ignores the "female" gaze? Why emphasize the fact it's male? What's wrong with men staring and not females who also stare? I get a lot of gaijin, especially in western & northern European, as well as USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand (to name a few) have this bizarre and seemingly hypocritical mindset, but it seems double standards and more malicious than the poorly executed fan service spoken about here to me as of current. Yeah, some fo of sexual fan service needs to be toned down, but camera angles for characters wearing lewd/skin tight/revealing/ridiculous clothing that has a realistic chance of someone seeing that lewd bit seems like a bad example you have imo, and shouldn't matter which sex sees it. Either everyone sees it (with the only caviot being if you are of the right age imo), or NO one sees it imo. Implying men shouldn't watch is what I consider a gross form of gate-keeping I will not support.
To go along with that, Juliet Starling in Lollipop Chainsaw. She's sexualized a bunch in that game, but just like Bayonetta, it's part of her character, and it doesn't feel forced, gross, or overall weird. It feels natural because that's part of their basic character traits

With a lot of anime’s, the answer is quite simple. Are you a 12 year old boy who has way too little parental supervision? Do you shower less than twice a week, spend less than 2 hours a month outside, and do not have at least one non-relative who you willingly and regularly interact with? If you said “No” to both of these, you are not the target audience, which is a really good thing if you wanna do 99% of what we’ve evolved over millions of years to do, but bad if you wanna sit down and mindlessly bing terribly written anime with an annual budget of 4 v-bucks and a half-empty bag of expired Doritos.
With the fanservice portion, while I agree with what you stated about Marvel (especially in She-Hulk, where it teased Daredevil by showing his mask only for him to not show up for multiple episodes), I’m surprised that you didn’t mention DC as well. With their most egregious and recent example of fanservice being with Black Adam. Being that as great as it seeing the Justice Society and characters like Hawkman and Doctor Fate on the silver screen, they film doesn’t really spend any time exploring them and they were obviously only added to pull in diehard comics fans. It’s especially bad how Doctor Fate is just entirely wasted though by severely nerfing him and killing him off, when he’s meant to be one of the strongest characters in the DC universe. However, the worst example is the post-credits scene with Henry Cavill’s showing back up as Superman, being that it was meant to potentially tease him showing up again in future projects after being absent since Justice League…only for them to then announce months later that they’d be rebooting the whole DC movie universe, and that Henry Cavill would no longer be Superman. I get that they obviously didn’t plan this back when they made this scene, but it does show that whoever planned it in the first place had a severe lack of foresight. And so it just causes it to feel artificial at best and pointless at worst. So overall, even if I can agree with Marvel not being the best at handling fanservice, their competitors certainly aren’t the best at it either.

Fan service, where it can used accordingly and in moderation, is fine to me. I don't tend to have an issue with it in general. It does distract in moments where it doesn't make sense to pop up. Regarding underage characters, it's definitely one thing to find it weird. I know I do at times. However, I don't agree with it being a red-flag situation, mainly in terms of discerning fiction from reality. People on Twitter, for example, often sling the p-word around, watering down and twisting its meaning, and simply using it wrong. If the situation's not actionable, it's a waste of time and resources. Idk why so many get hung up on stupid things like this. Otherwise, fan service is not too bad, so long as it's used properly, and it fits the series.
For the one in regards to "baiting fans/callbacks to other entries", I think it can work if the people doing the fanservice also show they actually care about the proeprties they are calling back to. Like it is clear bait to want to get people watching, but if executed well, it may cause people to stick around or want to explore the new setting you basically used a ratings trap in order to see what is up with it. I do agree when it's used for manipulation, it just sours my taste in the medium, but if done well, I'll bite. As for the one with the cake, if the show is meant to be for fanservice, even if it has weak writting, it better be worth the watch. Like funnily enough that the thumbnail in the transition had Galko on it, because a gripe I had with an anime that also had a Gyaru protagonist that came not too long after the Galko anime ended was that even though she was cute, I just wasn't experiencing the same emotional investment. The girls were cute and all, but like...they didn't seem to grab me the same way Galko and her friends and classmates did - showing they had more going on than what the surface showed. Heck, maybe Fire Force has a bad habit with how it handles fan service, but I never did mind it, and in a way, if you know the reason why the main guy "smiles", it's basically showing that the situation is just a misunderstanding used for comedic effect. Maybe I'm the wrong guy to talk about it, but I do like cake...especially cheescake, so I won't complain if I find it inside of my box of Shonen O's. (I think the issue is more how badly does the service get in the way of the storytelling - which funnily enough could apply to both types of fan service. If it's not that bad, I just chill with it; if it's like...too distracting, I guess that is when it does become a problem, though I still stand by Tamaki's "Lucky Lecher[?]" Ability not to be a total deal breaker for me, though heard people not giving Fire Force a chance because of her - despite she being a fave.)
Fanservice in both senses can act as an enhancement to something that someone enjoys, hence the "fan" in its name, but if it's thrown into something lazy and unenjoyable it won't salvage a product. Especially when it comes to ecchi anime, from my standard I can enjoy some ecchi but the good ones are ones where you actually like the writing and would watch it regardless of ecchi content. I don't think it's necessarily something that wastes time if it gets implemented into a series, in a manner where it's aimed at being a part of the series. By which I mean, if the series is well constructed it will feel like it's fairly natural - usually, due to the nature of ecchi, it's that they make comedic scenarios that do double duty or sometimes it's given a grim setting and the sexual scenes are meant to drive the depravity in the tone. For referencing of prior work it's the same. Sometimes it actually enhances the product, oftentimes it's just "recognize this and clap."

To me, service to the fans doesn't really matter to me, unless it's not entertaining. And given that I have low standards for entertainment (I like all the Marvel movies, warts and all), that very rarely ever happens. As for fanservice, well, I think that everyone are skeletons in meatsuits; I don't let it get to me, because they're free to do whatever they want with their bodies, so long as they don't unjustifiably criticise my choices. And since they can only influence the world through fans...
That said, child fanservice... Well, if I were to see somebody underage being aggressive to anyone, I will pull them away with the least force necessary, and politely ask them to rethink their lives. If they're not, I'll just not bring it up until they do.

As a perhaps too dedicated fan of Arc-V, I'm continually disappointed by how they handled the legacy characters in that show. Example: They already had an edgy guy who fights for revenge and for his younger sibling as an original character in the show. Then they brought in Kite from Zexal, and... he has the exact same personality and backstory as this already existing original Arc-V character, except because of how late he appears, his character arc is minuscule and he feels absolutely nothing like the Kite Tenjo that we've come to know and love. This hit especially hard as I just finished watching Zexal, and Kite was a fantastic character in that show... (And yes, I use dub YGO names. Bite me.)
The best way to service the fans is to make something good, anything else is extra. Its like a cake, fanservice is sprinkles, icing and decorations, a nice touch if the cake is good but is iinda insulting if the cake is actual shit.

After having my thoughts together I think I can say it depends. "Forever Red" is a power ranger episode that a lot of fans love because while it was a Wild Force episode, technically, it starred just about every Red Ranger up to then, even getting Austin St. John back as Jason, and Jason David frank as Tommy. It was also cool seeing Andros again, and while they weren't the stars, they all were happy to leave the mantle to the then 'current' Red Ranger. Although Idk if that counts as fan service. As... for the 'other one'. Idk. It depends on a lot of factors for me. I'm not saying I think all anime needs it, it's just been literally there in just about everything I've watched as a kid, Dragon ball, Sailor Moon, Pokemon, Digimon, Yugioh. Even going back further similar gags were there. So it isn't new. So all I can say, is that it depends on execution and context within relationship to the series. For example, Fairy Tail. It's a running gag that Lucy is stripped, but it's also a running gag that Gray strips unknowingly, even in ep 2 you see his firm bare ass because he stripped again. I would think that's. Fine. The show is semi-serious in nature and leans more into action-comedy with splices of serious moments. Age is iffy because logically, yeah it's "Wrong". But when there's a 12 yo Goku stripping to just his birthday suit, how are people fine with that, but then have an issue with idk, outfits? Again you can argue context but like if someone's in a bikini in the desert. I can see that being a problem. It doesn't make sense. However it would make even less sense for anyone to be fully clothed like they're in a snow storm. I suppose it depends on what people mean. I think criticizing an anime like MHA is pointless because they already cover the controversy of female hero outfits based on their power. Mineta is meant to be unlikable for his overly pervy nature and manipulation,... that's literally why they shun him during the dorm room check. or the existence of double standards really. People are fine with seeing underaged male ass and whatnot like Gray or the boys from 1-A, but then complain because cleavage is a thing. If you're watching a show like... idk Attack on Titan, and there's brutal murder in the scene, it would feel weird if there was just random bikini shots. Idk I guess my points are invalid because "fanservice" of the latter is just a joyride of insanity for me because of the absurdity and how it doesn't matter to me anymore. I like cracking jokes like how men in DBZ lose all their clothes just by a brush of wind, but like fighters like videl or 18 are just kinda roughed up a bit. No one's forcing anyone to keep reading/watching and it seems like people only do to have something to complain about.
There’s certainly nothing wrong with including characters from a previous storyline in their media-sequels and prequels exist for a reason-but it’s a fine line to walk along. If they are too significant, then they can take attention away from the new characters and their story, but if they are just cameos, then their inclusion feels cheap and out of place, shoved in for audience buy-in. Ultimately, what writers need to focus on is making the story and characters, regardless of their history, into compelling narrative elements. If the new protagonist is solidly written such that their presence next to a “legacy character” feels natural, then the latter’s inclusion will feel less like fan service and more like this is an organic continuation of the original story.
Free has a ton of fanservice, which I guess is the point of the show but sometimes I want to watch a sports anime for the sport and not enough swimming animes out there
I think the thing with both sides of Fan Service is that with anime you can feel weird or not like it about the character's age but for me it's not really a deal breaker, it can be abused but it depend on the anime and worst case would be a Fire Force and I feel like no anime I watched so far hit that level of abuse. And on the West side they can do it in like two ways, one to draw you in for a event or characters which do well or great sometimes and the other one is to abuse it to draw people in just to not have what you came there for or ruin it in a matter of seconds. and I feel like that's the worst.

this is something that Mieruko-chan suffers from, it is such a good horror slice of life anime that falls into we need to show boobs to keep the interest in the series. if they were to take out the fan service it would make the series better as you can focus in how well it handles every other aspect of the series.
Ironic part with Yugioh is that the card game is meant for kids. At the age +13 and up (official in the konami site). So Tori fits the age range for the kids even if its creepy.

One of the main issues being that they don't use fan service sparingly anymore (especially in the MCU).
Endgame ended a nearly eleven year storyline. Their flagship characters just left. People have grown tired of the mcu. So in order to make fans watch a show or movie they place fanservice in it.

An example of Sentai fanservice, (besides the fan service) I remember them bringing back Gai for a gag where a bunch of villainesses and female characters fell in love with him.
Then Gokaiger which is the season of fanservice, bringing back returning actors. Which was used as a celebration for Sentai as a whole, and to make kids happy after suffering through earthquakes.
Heisei Generation Forever, most fond moment in the movie was when Takeru Satoh returns in the role of Ryotaro.

I feel a good type of Fanservice comes from Kirby games. The games are often PACKED with fanservice, though they almost never impact the game themselves. Often they're callbacks or returning characters, and they're always implemented well into the game (Kabula in Robobot, Pon and Con in Star Allies, Dual Needle from 64 returning as Clutter Needle, etc.).
Fan service regarding age in anime is always a weird area. You can have teenagers with the bodies of adult models and you can have adults who look like 12 year olds.

Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire, as well as the villains from their respective movies showing up was 100% fanservice, and the plot could not have worked without that fanservice. Something being plot relevant does won't stop something from also being fan service.
To use a cooking analogy, Fan service is like a strong spice, not every show needs it, a little at the right time or in the right way can enhance a show, and some shows are built completely around it. Some people will avoid it and some people can't get enough of it

I think it would have been more accurate to call Multiverse of Madness and She-Hulk and a lot of stuff lately that twist the fan service and kill or disrespect the characters as "Fan Disservice"
Kirby star allies is the perfect example of proper fan service. Have the characters still be themselves, then also have them play the role they were always supposed to have. (i'm not just talking about the dream friends, I'm talking about pon and con, too)
I think that the fanservice saved that game, Star Allies wasn't very popular but then everyone started to have fun playing their favorite characters and we got an extra mod where every character could shine.

The sad part about Yu-Gi-Oh fanservice is that they actually did it right in GX. I mean, GX had just cameos, didn't use them to sell the show and then gave the show a big fanservice final episode. I mean come on, Yugi vs. Jaden (Yes I use the dub names COME AT ME) is pure fanservice don't deny it.

Yugioh is actually really annoying in fanservice. Not in the upskirt shots but the obsessive references to DM. We can't go a week without a new piece of Dark Magician, Blue-Eyes or Red-Eyes support being announced. They have since moved on to give us more cards from other eras of Yugioh but those 3 decks still more attention many other niche strategies. Shout outs to Payne 96 who has been waiting 1400+ days for new Volcanic Support.

I really hate how much attention DM gets from both the fanbase and from Konami themselves. It gets a treatment that most other series don't get, and it takes away the spotlight from other series.
Yugi always appears front and center, loads of monsters inspired by Dark Magician and the "Eyes Dragons", nonstop DM support like how Weevil, Espa Roba, and Mako are getting more support than Axel, DM is the one that gets the most merch and stuff made for it, all three movies have involved DM, basically every well known Yugioh meme comes from DM, Mako replaced Nasch on the cover of a set in the west, Rush Duels give way more acknowledgement to DM than other series who usually just get a nod or card inspired by them at best, and of course the nonstop support for Dark Magician and Blue Eyes.
And somehow that isn't even all of my examples. Yugioh gives Pokemon a run for it's money when it comes to showing off the first generation.
Most of this you can blame DM fan base and most of the older player base who hasn't cared about YGO since GX or 5Ds.
Konami will never stop pandering to DM fans.

Don't forget the annoying effects DM archetype support gets too when it comes to new support, where they give the card it's main effects and then just give it a powerful extra effect for no reason other than because DM, like opponent can only summon 1 monster at a time, opponent can't activate anything when this card attacks, just banish any opponents card for summoning Dark Magician etc etc...
Fairy Tail is the peak of what is wrong with arbitrarily adding in fan service.
"Hey this character was just resurrected after a very sad mourning period, what should we do with her?"
"Let's detrack from a pivotal tournament arc and have a bikini scene in the arena with her in it!"
Years later: "Hey let's bring back the worst kind of Team Rocket rip offs and have the girls dance in tight clothes."

Series where they try to act all edgey then have a really really bad fan service joke in there may make me peeved for a moment but Fairy Tail has had such a weird fetish with it going on. Like they think their audience can't handle 5 seconds of action with out chesticles bouncing everywhere in between.
In their defense, Fairy Tail is not exactly a serious plot driven story.
Fairy Tail is more of a comedy action Manga that doesn't take itself seriously like most typical shonen animes so they are allowed to play with their fanservice.
Also, the fanservice just doesn't apply to the girls but it also applies to the men so it is basically fair game for everyone involved.
And another thing, the girls in FT are not reluctant fanservice girls, apart from Lucy, the female characters really don't care. They do not feel shame in showing off their bodies to another and they just doing it because they want to not because the plot demands them to.

the problem is that it expects to not be taken seriously in the wrong way, it doesn't present itself as a genuinely funny comedy as in the world and scenarios are wacky and weird but nonetheless make sense within the world they exist in
Example: Monkey D. Luffy needing to eat copious amounts of meat to ensure his rubber body remains stretchy, rather than something that exists within a vacuum that the reader is meant to point and laugh at because the author demands it
but instead uses the "it's comedy, it's not meant to be taken seriously" excuse, which can whittle it down to a show for toddlers, due to a lack of coherency
Example:Almost all females in Fairy Tail have the same body type(big boobs and slim figures), this raises a question as to why the men are so pervy or horny, because you can see a woman almost as sexy as Lucy or Erza walking down the street any other day. I can understand why the legacy characters in Arc-V needed to be alternate versions to fit the narrative, their main issue was the way they handled the GX and Zexal cast because it took way too long for them to be introduced while the show was already rushing to its ending. Also Arc-V was already introducing way too many new characters in an already bloated cast which is why the tournament arc in the Synchro Dimension took forever.

Fan service of the latter variety hits different in different anime for me. Sometimes it supplements the wonderful story, character development, or action scenes (e.g. my fav series Kill la Kill). Sometimes it's just the main focus of a stupid/sophomoric show (e.g. Keijo!!!!! or Senran Kagura). Finally, it can be laughed away as pure satire (Shimoneta). Interestingly enough, I enjoy all three usages depending on the circumstances.
Something I always found interesting about the fanservice in Keijo is just how seriously they treat it. The fact that they have training montages for their butts, have special named techniques for various ways of hitting with their boobs and butts, and the fights are treated like a Dragon Ball Z battle. it's so silly it somehow loops back to being endearing.
And it was also interesting just how many puns they managed to put into the special names.

Gundam Build series. Cameos, references and injokes to the franchise. Yet the stories never suffered from the fan service. Plus build fighters had Ramba Ral as a main supporting Character.

An interesting way Yu-Gi-Oh did fanservice as in service to the fans was in the one of the storylines that are told through the cards (to give an explanation, most archetypes in Yu-Gi-Oh have their own lores, most of the time self-contained to them and a few other archetypes, however there are also some bigger storylines that have a big number of archetypes be apart of them, like for example the Abyss storyline which sees the archetypes of Dogmatika, Tri-Brigade, Sprigans, Despia, Swordsoul, Icejade, Therions, Spright, and Bystial interact togethers in a storyline that mostly revolves arounds the Fallen of Albaz).
The Duel Terminal Storyline is the longest running storyline the game has had, starting in the 5D'S era of the game, and ending in the Arc-V era (technically they're still released cards for the archetypes to this day, but they're also not new additions to the story and more like ways to fill-in for some unclear events while supporting said old decks). One of the archetypes released in the latest season of Duel Terminal is called Qliphort.
At the end of the World Legacy storyline (a storyline that started in the Vrains era of the game), one of the final cards is Avida, Rebuilder of Worlds, who is a god that recreates that planet the characters lived on after it got massively fucked up. Now one of the interesting part of Avida's design is that it has cores very similar to the one present on the Qliphorts, which would connect the Duel Terminal and World Legacy storyline by implying the Qliphorts used to be part of Avida.

Senran Kagura got done so dirty in terms of fanservice with each game passing. Like yeah it has some horny moments, but that was at least in the case of you going into the series knowing what to expect. I liked how each girl actually had depth to their characters and the way they interacted with one another was entertaining and had me eager to see more. Sadly after Estival Verses it started to focus more on the fanservice side of things and now every girl is just a one note joke.
SK from what I’ve read has some pretty interesting lore when it comes to the setting and it’s characters. It just sucks that they never really expand upon it. Like I’m generally curious about the relationship between Asuka’s grandparents, or the history behind the yoma demons.

@@MrRAGE-md5rj I’m sorry but the plot of SK was bare bones, nonsensical, basic and nothing spectacular it was the same stuff you’d see anywhere else in any other anime and most of the time they really tried way to hard being over dramatic in some instances you already know no one is going to die so why even have those conversations about it and that’s another thing the VN take way to long to get to the point then finally gameplay comes but it’s only 5 mins while I’m reading for like 20 last I checked this was a game not a VN.
The characters are cool and all but it came off more as a character driven series than a story one and to be honest fans should stop being disingenuous pretending that it’s something deep when it really isn’t it’s surface level and makes the characters slightly interesting at best I can get sad backstories, generic monsters in any other game and series.
The series was always silly even in the beginning the demon monsters have booba for crying out loud I’m guessing it’s because their female but still even their a tad bit silly despite looking completely out of place for something like SK but despite what I think I am open to hearing others opinions on it.

I think a good example of fanservice, or at least a better one, is Kirby.
Kirby does a lot of fanservice, from referencing or remaking fights against old bosses, reintroducing old copy abilities, and then there was Star Allies.

That HSOTD scene at the beginning reminded me it existed, and then I got sad because it will never be finished because the creator died.
One fan service example I liked from Cardfight Vanguard recently was a lot more subtle. In the last season, it was a tournament arc and during a role call of all the participants, they played an instrumental version of Vanguard's first ever opening. It was so abript with no hint in advance so i immediately jumped from my spot on the couch. No returning characters or anything like that, just some music. Something like that is what I enjoy because it's subtle enough where it's not trying to use fan service as a crutch but rather an Easter egg to fans who've been with the series for a long time.
I like fan service when it's a reward for a payoff, like the Captain America service, or when anime only do it for certain scenarios like when the characters go to the beach.
Key word: nuance. When that’s forgotten you can always expect tonal whiplash.
As a yugioh fan, this really hurts.
My take is that the "cheesecake" style of fanservice certainly has its place, and that's in light-hearted downtime. If you want to throw in a "beach episode" or "hotspring scene" or even just have bouncing tits/pecs in a relaxed 'at home" scene that is fine, but shoving it in your face when the story/plot should be the thing that is supposed to be center stage is bad. You can even get away with characters that have a character "quirk" of being "well endowed" in one way or another and them showing that off on a regular basis in their wardrobe choices, but you should only be really emphasizing that character's "assets" in down time, you shouldn't be putting in close ups of your characters' tight ass or glistening pecks in the middle of a climactic fight scene
The thing with fanservice (the non-sexual kind) is you have to go all the way with it and understand what specifically fans want to see. It can be easy to screw up.
As for the sexual stuff, I generally never like seeing this, but I can tolerate it if it at least feels naturally woven into the plot, but a lot of times though it just feels weird and forced. It also usually kills the pacing and at worst even makes characters feel very out of character.
Basically what Toriyama did in the Buu where they hype the children and Gohan where Goku and Vegeta steal the spotlight... by having Buu kill the sons alongside the planet as they just fight him again next episode
I think one of my favorite uses of fanservice is the citadel dlc for mass effect. It was a dlc all about the characters, the memes, and it still has slow emotional moments. It seemed like a genuine love letter to the community.
New Star Wars battlefront ii also had great fanservice. “Hello there” or “roger roger” can be said by a lot of characters. It also added the arc trooper and the clone commando, two of the most loved clone variants in Star Wars.

I do like fanservice. I don't feel it detract from the history or denigrate the character as people says. This "war" on it feels more like a way to censor artists and make them abide to a standard they may not like. They ignore what the artist likes even though 70% of them in Japan are female, which some stated they do like their females characters in those ways.
It’s because the people who complain are people usually NOT born in Japan. In America; for example, they took great offense that dragon ball showed goku/gohan’s willy and how violent it was.
The same people that marketed sexy female characters in their comic books are offended that Japan does it too. I mean hell even their cartoons are no different in terms of it.

Also sometimes we tend to treat it as a good thing (for example GOT and Eurotha), vs how we treat anime fan service. Anime/Manga is so overstaturised with "Fanservice" that I don't like it and have to actively ignore it to enjoy the Anime/Manga. I also normalized it so much that I get confused when it doesn't happen. For example, I read this one manhwa "Survival story of a sword king in a fantasy world", really enjoy it and the Mc gets this feminine looking wizard partner, coming from a strict dragon hunting knight family and I think he's going to be revealed to be a girl and they're going to hock up even though there are no signs to that and it turns out he's a dragon a male dragon, not a girl, and I was so surprised that it happened and I realized that I seen Fanservice so much that I expected it everywhere.

When it comes to "sexy' fanservice, I don't mind it. It only really bothers me if it's placed in like a serious scene which kills the mood entirely. Other than that, "sexy" fanservice is pretty cool in my eyes, as someone who unironically has anime Highschool of the Dead, DxD, and Keijo as some of their all time favs. Then again, 30% of my personality is being down bad for anyone or anything so I might be biased in that regard.
"Easter" fanservice is something I'm more mixed on. On one hand, having something being brought back or referenced in a franchise can feel great, especially if the people behind them are fans of it too. On the other hand, relying on too much on Easter Eggs or tickling the fans nostalgia boner can greatly harm the quality of certain media. It's why SW and Sonic fans are sick and tired of constant references to their pasts in every new entry.
I like sexy fanservice when used appropriately. Either build the scene or show about it. DxD is a good example of a show being built to be fanservicy. Even using Issei's skills of tearing down clothes strategically, and sometime subert it when an exhibitionist shows up.
For Easter eggs. I remember when the MCU started. We had Hulk being targeted by Stark's missiles. Capttain meeting Starks father, etc. It was used Sparringly, but never took over the whole movie. Leading to the first Avengers to feel like a natural conclusion of it. A good Marvel(?) movie that handled Easter Eg fanservice was into the Spiderverse, since it involved the concept of uniqueness.
Again, sexy fan service in a serious scene doesn't innately ruin it, but execution does.

I definitely agree with this. My issue with easter fanservice is also about how it holds back the stories. As great as it is to see old characters pop up in Star Wars, it gets to the point where either the galaxy is a really small place, or the characters are living black holes that force the story to orbit them. As much as I enjoyed Book of Boba Fett when it started, the fanservice wore it down by having half the season be about the Mandalorian, bringing back Cobb and setting it in Tatooine again, despite other planets being available. And it also ruins the tension as well. As soon as Cobb was shot, I could just tell that he wasn't going to stay dead, because people liked him too much. Mando and Boba weren't in danger, because they were there specifically for the fanservice. And so you've got this huge group of people who the story won't kill, and so the bad guys and killer robots look really incompetent.
Of course, I don't like it when they bring back a fan favourite just to kill off, as they are doing. So maybe what they should do is have these characters show up just long enough to show that its all connected. Or even just be mentioned, to establish that.
As long the fanservice isn’t ruining moments where I’m supposed to give a shit like with a serious or tense moment or when it isn’t the whole personality and purpose of a character, then bring on the anime tiddies anytime. One can question the necessity (distracting from the plot) of it if they want but to me, it gives the story a more personal feel and along with other things makes it feel alive, I’m not here to read/watch a creator’s checklist of plot points, it’s ok for things not tied to plot progression to happen.

Almost every instance of which I can remember absolutely stops the moment so we can see some 🍒 for a second or two. I especially despise it in Fire Force, which I recently stopped watching because it got annoying.
Trust me I’d enjoy this stuff as much as the next guy but sometimes I just want a cool story and action instead of having that abruptly interrupted so that one fan can get a bonified high.

I personally don't mind as long as the show is honest about it or does something funny or clever with it, take Gintama for example, it uses almost no fan service but when it happens it's so over the top or it leads to a joke.

Would’ve loved to see your take of service to the fans when it comes to Pokémon, specially when previous gen characters appear in newer ones such as Cynthia being in BW, Red and Blue appearing in Gen 7 (both the Alola games and Lets Go), and Jasmine being in DPP/BDSP. Imo sometimes it works if they have a significant role and other times it feels they’re just there to be there
I see it like this: A character has no actual agency in their story. If a character is putting themselves in fanservice-y predicaments, that's a part of their character (or it's important to the plot/themes like Kill la Kill). If the author/director/camera is doing it, then it reveals the hand of the author and can break immersion. That's why I like when Bayonetta and Mai Valentine do it but hate it when it's happening to most of the female characters in Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Bayonetta and Mai are active participants. Xenoblade feels like I'm forced to watch a pervert trying to shove their camera up someone's skirt.
Edit: I should add that I am female myself, so that might color my perception a bit to the more common forms of the male gaze.
I will say, it's strange that irl a lot of attractive girls will want this sort of camera thing you call "pervert" yet is not considered as much because they actively engage in it even when unaware but would fully support it. Either everyone sees it (with the only caviot being if you are of the right age imo), or NO one sees it imo. Implying men shouldn't watch is what I consider a gross form of gate-keeping I will not support.
To go along with that, Juliet Starling in Lollipop Chainsaw. She's sexualized a bunch in that game, but just like Bayonetta, it's part of her character, and it doesn't feel forced, gross, or overall weird. It feels natural because that's part of their basic character traits
Smooth, solid take. o: When characters like Bayonetta choose to be revealing, you can see how well they handle it, as opposed to an outside God being obsessively sexual about their own playthings, even when they're decently dressed. If it's part of a character's personality then it's excusable but when it's done for no reason then it undercuts the character because you're dehumanising them at a fundamental level (Which is why I think we need to add extra criteria to creative commons and public domain.) and this isn't just limited to anime, it can also happen with actors, musicians and, in the worst of cases, just random people.

I dont think theres really anything bad about fanservice, its fun.
Some fanservice, especially in anime, raises flags more red than the USSR in my head. I wonder if it was put there specifically to bother people like me.
With a lot of anime’s, the answer is quite simple.
Are you a 12 year old boy who has way too little parental supervision? Do you shower less than twice a week, spend less than 2 hours a month outside, and do not have at least one non-relative who you willingly and regularly interact with?
If you said “No” to both of these, you are not the target audience, which is a really good thing if you wanna do 99% of what we’ve evolved over millions of years to do, but bad if you wanna sit down and mindlessly bing terribly written anime with an annual budget of 4 v-bucks and a half-empty bag of expired Doritos.

With the fanservice portion, while I agree with what you stated about Marvel (especially in She-Hulk, where it teased Daredevil by showing his mask only for him to not show up for multiple episodes), I’m surprised that you didn’t mention DC as well. With their most egregious and recent example of fanservice being with Black Adam. Being that as great as it seeing the Justice Society and characters like Hawkman and Doctor Fate on the silver screen, they film doesn’t really spend any time exploring them and they were obviously only added to pull in diehard comics fans. It’s especially bad how Doctor Fate is just entirely wasted though by severely nerfing him and killing him off, when he’s meant to be one of the strongest characters in the DC universe.
However, the worst example is the post-credits scene with Henry Cavill’s showing back up as Superman, being that it was meant to potentially tease him showing up again in future projects after being absent since Justice League…only for them to then announce months later that they’d be rebooting the whole DC movie universe, and that Henry Cavill would no longer be Superman. I get that they obviously didn’t plan this back when they made this scene, but it does show that whoever planned it in the first place had a severe lack of foresight. And so it just causes it to feel artificial at best and pointless at worst.
So overall, even if I can agree with Marvel not being the best at handling fanservice, their competitors certainly aren’t the best at it either.

Fan service, where it can used accordingly and in moderation, is fine to me. I don't tend to have an issue with it in general. It does distract in moments where it doesn't make sense to pop up.
Regarding underage characters, it's definitely one thing to find it weird. I know I do at times. However, I don't agree with it being a red-flag situation, mainly in terms of discerning fiction from reality. People on Twitter, for example, often sling the p-word around, watering down and twisting its meaning, and simply using it wrong. If the situation's not actionable, it's a waste of time and resources. Idk why so many get hung up on stupid things like this.
Otherwise, fan service is not too bad, so long as it's used properly, and it fits the series.
For the one in regards to "baiting fans/callbacks to other entries", I think it can work if the people doing the fanservice also show they actually care about the proeprties they are calling back to. Like it is clear bait to want to get people watching, but if executed well, it may cause people to stick around or want to explore the new setting you basically used a ratings trap in order to see what is up with it. I do agree when it's used for manipulation, it just sours my taste in the medium, but if done well, I'll bite.
As for the one with the cake, if the show is meant to be for fanservice, even if it has weak writting, it better be worth the watch. Like funnily enough that the thumbnail in the transition had Galko on it, because a gripe I had with an anime that also had a Gyaru protagonist that came not too long after the Galko anime ended was that even though she was cute, I just wasn't experiencing the same emotional investment. The girls were cute and all, but like...they didn't seem to grab me the same way Galko and her friends and classmates did - showing they had more going on than what the surface showed. Heck, maybe Fire Force has a bad habit with how it handles fan service, but I never did mind it, and in a way, if you know the reason why the main guy "smiles", it's basically showing that the situation is just a misunderstanding used for comedic effect. Maybe I'm the wrong guy to talk about it, but I do like cake...especially cheescake, so I won't complain if I find it inside of my box of Shonen O's. (I think the issue is more how badly does the service get in the way of the storytelling - which funnily enough could apply to both types of fan service. If it's not that bad, I just chill with it; if it's like...too distracting, I guess that is when it does become a problem, though I still stand by Tamaki's "Lucky Lecher[?]" Ability not to be a total deal breaker for me, though heard people not giving Fire Force a chance because of her - despite she being a fave.)

Fanservice in both senses can act as an enhancement to something that someone enjoys, hence the "fan" in its name, but if it's thrown into something lazy and unenjoyable it won't salvage a product.
Especially when it comes to ecchi anime, from my standard I can enjoy some ecchi but the good ones are ones where you actually like the writing and would watch it regardless of ecchi content. I don't think it's necessarily something that wastes time if it gets implemented into a series, in a manner where it's aimed at being a part of the series. By which I mean, if the series is well constructed it will feel like it's fairly natural - usually, due to the nature of ecchi, it's that they make comedic scenarios that do double duty or sometimes it's given a grim setting and the sexual scenes are meant to drive the depravity in the tone.
For referencing of prior work it's the same. Sometimes it actually enhances the product, oftentimes it's just "recognize this and clap."

To me, service to the fans doesn't really matter to me, unless it's not entertaining. And given that I have low standards for entertainment (I like all the Marvel movies, warts and all), that very rarely ever happens. As for fanservice, well, I think that everyone are skeletons in meatsuits; I don't let it get to me, because they're free to do whatever they want with their bodies, so long as they don't unjustifiably criticise my choices. And since they can only influence the world through fans...
That said, child fanservice... Well, if I were to see somebody underage being aggressive to anyone, I will pull them away with the least force necessary, and politely ask them to rethink their lives. If they're not, I'll just not bring it up until they do.

As a perhaps too dedicated fan of Arc-V, I'm continually disappointed by how they handled the legacy characters in that show. Example: They already had an edgy guy who fights for revenge and for his younger sibling as an original character in the show. Then they brought in Kite from Zexal, and... he has the exact same personality and backstory as this already existing original Arc-V character, except because of how late he appears, his character arc is minuscule and he feels absolutely nothing like the Kite Tenjo that we've come to know and love.
This hit especially hard as I just finished watching Zexal, and Kite was a fantastic character in that show...

The best way to service the fans is to make something good, anything else is extra. Its like a cake, fanservice is sprinkles, icing and decorations, a nice touch if the cake is good but is iinda insulting if the cake is actual shit.
The major fanservice I’m totally fine with is in Neptunia, because it is either the bases for humor or it really just shows how strong each character can be and that they shouldn’t be underestimated and how their attire reflects their personalities oh so well

After having my thoughts together I think I can say it depends.
"Forever Red" is a power ranger episode that a lot of fans love because while it was a Wild Force episode, technically, it starred just about every Red Ranger up to then, even getting Austin St. John back as Jason, and Jason David frank as Tommy. It was also cool seeing Andros again, and while they weren't the stars, they all were happy to leave the mantle to the then 'current' Red Ranger. Although Idk if that counts as fan service.
As... for the 'other one'. Idk. It depends on a lot of factors for me. I'm not saying I think all anime needs it, it's just been literally there in just about everything I've watched as a kid, Dragon ball, Sailor Moon, Pokemon, Digimon, Yugioh. Even going back further similar gags were there. So it isn't new. So all I can say, is that it depends on execution and context within relationship to the series.
For example, Fairy Tail. It's a running gag that Lucy is stripped, but it's also a running gag that Gray strips unknowingly, even in ep 2 you see his firm bare ass because he stripped again. I would think that's. Fine. The show is semi-serious in nature and leans more into action-comedy with splices of serious moments.
Age is iffy because logically, yeah it's "Wrong". But when there's a 12 yo Goku stripping to just his birthday suit, how are people fine with that, but then have an issue with idk, outfits? Again you can argue context but like if someone's in a bikini in the desert. I can see that being a problem. It doesn't make sense. However it would make even less sense for anyone to be fully clothed like they're in a snow storm.
I suppose it depends on what people mean. I think criticizing an anime like MHA is pointless because they already cover the controversy of female hero outfits based on their power. Mineta is meant to be unlikable for his overly pervy nature and manipulation,... that's literally why they shun him during the dorm room check. or the existence of double standards really. People are fine with seeing underaged male ass and whatnot like Gray or the boys from 1-A, but then complain because cleavage is a thing.
If you're watching a show like... idk Attack on Titan, and there's brutal murder in the scene, it would feel weird if there was just random bikini shots.
Idk I guess my points are invalid because "fanservice" of the latter is just a joyride of insanity for me because of the absurdity and how it doesn't matter to me anymore. I like cracking jokes like how men in DBZ lose all their clothes just by a brush of wind, but like fighters like videl or 18 are just kinda roughed up a bit. I think not every anime needs it, but its existence just differentiates from every other series. I mean idk. I watch all types of anime, and I enjoy the insanity of "fanservice" Because otherwise you're just stuck with tragedic anime and you come out more miserable than you were before getting into it. I mean in terms of Fire Force, Tamaki's entire character is a joke about it because even she wants it to trigger with the guy she likes. It's just being more honest of when people fantasize of situations they 'want' to happen. It's literally so bizarre it's one of those dumb insanity moments going "How the hell did that even happen?" concepts. Idk. I can see arguments saying it's fine to help break tension. Anxiety and stress sucks hell so if it breaks the tension to relax for a moment then I don't see an issue. IT's like my chemistry professor making a joke during the final exam because he saw everyone was too tensed up.
I suppose it's preferential though. Either way I don't see it as a valid excuse to demonize works or treat people like trash because they like it. No one's forcing anyone to keep reading/watching and it seems like people only do to have something to complain about.
I agree with a lot of what you said but I don't thing context or age really matters because at the end of the day it's fiction. No character is real.

There’s certainly nothing wrong with including characters from a previous storyline in their media-sequels and prequels exist for a reason-but it’s a fine line to walk along. If they are too significant, then they can take attention away from the new characters and their story, but if they are just cameos, then their inclusion feels cheap and out of place, shoved in for audience buy-in. Ultimately, what writers need to focus on is making the story and characters, regardless of their history, into compelling narrative elements. If the new protagonist is solidly written such that their presence next to a “legacy character” feels natural, then the latter’s inclusion will feel less like fan service and more like this is an organic continuation of the original story.

I think the thing with both sides of Fan Service is that with anime you can feel weird or not like it about the character's age but for me it's not really a deal breaker, it can be abused but it depend on the anime and worst case would be a Fire Force and I feel like no anime I watched so far hit that level of abuse. And on the West side they can do it in like two ways, one to draw you in for a event or characters which do well or great sometimes and the other one is to abuse it to draw people in just to not have what you came there for or ruin it in a matter of seconds. and I feel like that's the worst.
Hmm... personally, I find myself mostly oblivious to the fanservice (2nd type). I just ignore it and continue on 'till the next bit of a story appears.
