My first album that got me into zappa this year just spent over a £1000 on original vinyl that I lost over the years, just collected 50 L.Ps feel better now
Franks intended purpose of the JOE'S GARAGE album was to see how far he could push the censorship scrutinizers. Frank is used to that, he fought against it his whole life. When last weeks installment of Joe + Mary was not published, I figured it went to YT censorship.
When I was in high school and this came out, Why Does It Hurt When I Pee was absolutely my favorite too. :) And Lucille was the END of the first album - no playing side 3 for MONTHS. I got it in October and had to wait until Christmas to finally get the Act 2/3 album.
New Years Day I hit 74....... where did the time go? Listening to superb albums like this (& parts 2 & 3) over & over, smokin' a spliff or 3, workin' as a groundsman, raisin' 2 sons. Then doin' a degree in Fine Art @ 46, & bein' a freelance artist & vinyl D.J. since. Oh Yeah "Lucille " is a WOW! As an eternal Hippy I love what you do Lee. Keep on Keepin' on.
cool review / reaction, L33 - thx for doing it… it’s really cool that you’ve found your personal sort-of ‘coexistence’ with Frank’s music. like all things in artistic expression; we connect with what we connect with… and stuff that does not sit well with us personally / individually, we reject (reject for “ourselves”, that is. degustibus non est disputandum 😊). years from now, in your own listening time, you may never have any FZ on your playlist - but having gone thru a bunch of the 100 or so albums over time on the channel, you’re arguably at least a tad richer for having done it, ya’ know?.. peace, seanM
That’s a really good point. I don’t listen to this album very often, but it is a part of the foundation of my musical universe. Everything I listen to now passes through this filter.
I believe the naming thing is that the cd combined the songs and the narrations. The original lists the narrations as their own tracks. Joe's Garage is one of my favorite zappa albums and was my introduction to FZ. Also a token of his extreme is much older as it features the 70s band. Early versions of the song were often played live and listed as tush tush tush. The Joe's Garage version changes it up to fit the albums narrative.
The segue from the contest dialogue into the On the Bus/Toad-O Line solo is just incredible. And the solo itself, although (or perhaps because) it's an example of his xenochrony, is still probably my all time favourite FZ guitar piece. And that's saying something as I love them all! Definitely one for a repeat listen and you'll also pick out the nod to/teasing of Toto (Toad-O) in the phrases. Love your reactions and the way you let the tracks just run. Best YT reactor IMO.
From the wet t-shirt song through Why Does It Hurt When I Pee was recorded as one continuous piece. The solo in the middle was from a live performance of Inca Roads, the unedited version with original backing was released on the album One Shot Deal as Occam's Razor and is a whopping 9 mins long. FZ's road manager at the time thought it would be a good joke to rush to the rest room in the back of the tour bus and yell out:"WHY DOES IT HURT WHEN I PEE?" Next day at the 2 hour sound check the band were learning a new song with that title. A coulle band members tkkd the rosd manager to never do that again. Lol. Original version of Lucille appears on the FZ produced Jeff Simmons album Lucille Has Messed My Mind Up in a bluesrock style.
Just yesterday I was listening to The Whisperer on SiriusXM Radio Classics. I suspect The Central Scrutinizer was patterned off the stranger voice and dialogues of The Whisperer, which was a satirical poke at the radio crime dramas of the era. Frank would have been around 10 or 11 years old at the time so it may have left an impression on him, especially consideting how satirical he and his music would become.
One notable thing about this side, was "Why Does It Hurt When I Pee," is one of those most amazing songs ever written, imo, `because` it's essentially the perfect 70's rock formula, being parodied in a song, that's actually a part of a complete story/rock opera if you will. Replace those lyrics with something mainstream, and it would have been a top 10 hit. I'd be willing to bet.
The songs are the same, just named changed. Not sure why. But i always refer to them as "Wet t shirt night" into "Toad-O-Line". Because i owned the album first, and thats how its listed. It was on the reissue CD where the names were changed to protect the innocent....or whatever
Listen to that reverbed teflon drum kit sound. Colaiuta kit was so different live. So tinny sounding live. Frank had to amplify the drums or it wouldnt have fit properly on this album.
Lucille is genuinely beautiful. One of my favorite Zappa tunes.
Lets not forget. Frank wrote the notes on a piece of paper. Handed it to the musicians and said, "play this"
This video may not be monetized, but the experience of hearing this album is worth FAR more.
LOOOOVE the Frank Fridays!!! Keep going!!!!!
Bongo Fury!!!

He creates worlds within worlds. Very well said sir.
Bought this on vinyl when it was released.
I believe toad o line was a jab at Toto who had a hit song with Hold The Line at the time. Toad o was the band Mary saw before she became a groupie
It wouldn't be Friday without Frank! 😂

Love Frank Fridays, whether I'm amused or blown away

Joes garage is the story of my 1st band… lol
Beauty is a French phonetic corruption of a short cloth
Neck ornament currently in resurgence
The guitar solo was taken from a life recording of Inca Roads and can be admired fully on Occam's Razor
Totally committed to the 50 bucks
Whoever thinks Frank isn't a musical genius is kidding themselves.

Zappa is a matter of taste. You've either got it or you haven't. Great choice.
and for those who don't, there is always Katy Perry or Taylor Swift.

Yet another album of FZ standard - which means outstanding!
Damn, the media is still giving Frank a hard time
❤🎉❤ I'm rather traditional in myrock music, but the Fun Frank is always a welcome addition!!🎉🎉
Imaginary cowbell notes
Zappa's known for his bizarre lyrics, but this instrumentation is wild
not so bizarre once you learn the lingo
if you think Joe has a hard time of it just wait until you hear about what happened to Harry that time he went to see a Broadway show
It was a nice Friday again , Lee, happy new year!
Waiting (looking) for your reaction to the drum bit on Little Green Rosetta

After this full album reaction, PLEASE react to " SHEIK YERBOUTI'! next!
Fido was the name of his busses, 1,2,3 and on.
The buses were Phydeaux I II & III.

Be alert for firm and pert.
Jugga-buggaloo, gotta love Frank! I can hear some GG influences in this.
Yep , there is "War of the worlds" again. Right in the middle of "Why does it hurt"
Do you mean, "Mars, the Bringer of War" by Holst?
Is there a musical entity titled War of the Worlds?
@@Royalle_with_Cheese No I mean "war of the worlds by Jeff Wayne 1978

I'll have to listen to that. Not familiar.
Listen to that reverbed teflon drum kit sound. Colaiuta kit was so different live. So tinny sounding live. Frank had to amplify the drums or it wouldnt have fit properly on this album.
after Lucille was done with Joe I dated her. And she has messed my mind up too
she is notorious for messin minds
Stick it out and sy bourg are great songs.
Best side. Not my favorite album by FZ except side two and a few other tracks
On the Early copies of Joe's Garage, "Wet T-Shirt Nite" was renamed "Fembot In A Wet T-Shirt" and "Toad-O-Line" was renamed "On The Bus".
Too bad you couldn’t play the Central Scrutinizer’s narration that is in between the songs. 😢
also would be awesome if the Central Scrutinizer’s narration lyrics were put up on screen as it played
I would rather torture myself listening to Yoko Ono's screeching than subject my ears to Frank Zappa. This is not music. It is garbage.
Hot soapy Don Pardo
A comment like this is like going to someone else's sandbox just to drop a turd and leave. The notion of having manners escape some people.
Frank Zappa is an acquired taste, if you don’t like it, acquire some taste.
14 years on youtube, and no uploads or playlists. How have you even got 11 subs? Family?
.... but thanks for leaving a comment
