One has to wonder if you'd have had a different impression of the 'middle section' if you had been forewarned that it was essentially YES' effort to try to capture, musically, the *mood & emotions* of a nation fully involved in a WAR that included furious battles. It was an attempt to capture the *madness* and chaos of a war throughout the entire middle section, finally arriving at a climax which leaves you with a fantastic _emotional release._
The early part of the epic captures the spirit of a nation that's approaching an upcoming war, fueled by the confident predictions of the nation's leaders who are itching for a war with their perceived enemy. Before the war finally does break out, there's a very brief period of doubts & second-guessing, but it is quickly followed by pure war lust. It's once the decision to go to war has been made that the long instrumental battle section unfolds. At first the mood is strident & almost joyful at times when the armies head into battle at a quickened pace. It's also when we get the first indications that a heavy price is being paid. I think this part is my favorite section after the two-minute section you cited as your favorite. It's actually quite melodic around the bass line that dominates, driving the mood of the section
It's when that dramatic break occurs, when the early ups & downs of enthusiastic armies finally breaks down into absolute chaos & uncontrolled terror, that we get the section that is most difficult to appreciate, as it attempts to capture, through sound, the "madness" of all-out war. It eventually builds to a climax that generates a fantastic "release" from the pain & death of war after both sides have finally agreed to stop fighting. That's the amazing extended "denouement" section that you called your favorite (before you heard the beautiful *Soon* section which captures the regrets of the nation that went to war & found out it wasn't worth it, generating a resolve to never let it happen again)
It's because you didn't realize this when you were giving it a first listen that you really should give it a second listen, this time prepared for what you'll be hearing. Hell, I'd definitely watch you do a Second Listen vid just to see if you have a greater appreciation for what you are hearing while you're hearing it. I think all YES fans who watched this vid would definitely watch a follow-up 2nd listen vid quite eagerly...

I concur. Beautifully written thoughts. And yes, having learned what the context of the ong is about it has indeed totally changed my outlook on the song and its 'Acts' as it were, especially the middle 'battle Act'. So many layers to digest. Perhaps the second reaction is a good shout on next playthrough, though it would be a while. My brain needs time to come down from such a high! Thank you for the comments

@MusicForTheSoulReactions Peak YES were often too layered and complex to retain ALLO the polyrhythmic interplay the first time but each musician like always is very choreographed to perfection. No exception here in this very visceral gem and probably their most progressive alonf wiuth TALES

Do the live version and you can see things, like the slot machine sounds and what is making them lol. I’ve seen yes live dozens of times. Always perfection.

@MusicForTheSoulReactions You might be tempted to watch a live version of Gates for your 2nd listen, but I advise against it. While there is a decent live recording of Gates on the YESSHOWS album, a certain amount of familiarity with what you heard before is needed in order to notice much of the nuance you missed the first time
If, after re-listening to the studio version, you still want one more exposure to Gates, then definitely consider a live recording...

The keyboard player is Patrick Moraz. Moraz was a Yes member for a very brief time. Moraz played in this album ("Relayer") in 1974 and its subsequent tour. Later, Wakeman returned to Yes, for "Going For The One" album, in 1977.

You just reacted to War and Peace by Tolstoy via Jon Anderson´s vision and Executed by YES. You can hear the anger of the village rising againts their oppressors, you can her the battle, swords crashing, pain, anguish, you can her the victory and finally Soon o Soon the Light PEACE!!!! a Masterpice of Epic proportions

On July 19, 1975, I saw YES for the first time. The first three songs were Sound Chaser, the next song on this album, Close To The Edge, and Gates Of Delirium.I was so impressed I saw them 35 more time over the next forty years. Remember YES tells stories musically. The words, Jon isn't quite sure but rhythmically brilliant. It's War and Peace next time you listen in silence 😊

    • @jackbotsford8688
      @jackbotsford8688 19 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

I see the story as much more of an anti war piece. The citizens in the beginning are hungry for battle, ready to delve into peril blinded by a false vision of glory. The actual battle is brutal, and the soon section is not happy but a sad lament at the atrocities of war.

    • @Yes_Jorge_Yes
      @Yes_Jorge_Yes 19 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

@@lesblatnyak5947 I spoke to Alan White during the Ladder Tour and asked why they never play Sound Chaser anymore in concert, besides being too challenging for the the keyboardist in Duty, he said it used to be an opener and that used to set the timing for the concerts, they tend to accelerate all other songs after playing sound chaser. And he said putting it anywhere but the beginning it was too tough on him to be able to play any other songs after that.

  • @johnfoster5295
    @johnfoster5295 19 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

The instrumental makes perfect sense in the context of the song. It is about war, and that instrumental section portrays the battle stunningly. The instruments are part of the story. You even hear screams of agony. It isn't just a bunch of random noise.

Great reaction as ever, Steve. (Happy New Year by the way). Patrick Moraz is the keyboardist on this as Rick Wakeman took a break. I heard somewhere this is based on the Tolstoy book 'War and Peace' but that may not be true. I am sure someone can confirm or deny it. Considering this is 1974 it makes it all the more amazing. Squires bass playing is sublime as ever. You can just imagine that listeners to this in 1974 were most likely chilling on something herbal while enjoying this! Cheers, Neil

I love your reactions. I've stayed away from some of the musical choices you have had of late. I chuckled you like the voice of the greatest voice in music, Jon Anderson a good Lancashire lad like yourself. Gates is one of the greatest pieces of music by the greatest band that has graced this planet. Patrick Moraz is on the keys on this. This is based on War and Peace by Tolstoy. Seen them do this live in Glasgow 1975 two nights running.

I think this is an absolute masterpiece from start to finish, and I think you'll appreciate it more in its entirety if you give it a chance. That chaotic middle section is a brilliant musical representation of war, but also, as you become more familiar with it, it's a little less chaotic and a little more musical. It's probably my favorite section even though the "Soon" section is absolutely beautiful, as you said. And believe it or not, they were able to pull this off live. The "Yesshows" version is arguably even better.

This song is about War. Preparation, battle and aftermath. Congratulations on you (and anybody) that makes it through the battle, to get to the "reward" at the end. I am thoroughly enjoying this Yes ride with you. You're hilarious! though "the medicine" does get you a bit "rambley". Love it though! Try "Awaken", if you haven't yet.

Worth another listen when you know that it's a story of war. Then the chaotic music and even Jon Anderson's lyrics make perfect sense. Starting with a rousing justification for war, then the battle (The chaos) then the victory. Soon is the celebration of the victory. It's an absolute masterpiece.

So it’s my first visit to your page. I usually like to witness someone hearing Gates for the first time. I’ve no clue what you’ve heard from Yes(I’ll check it out), hopefully you’ve not just dove into this epic without “knowing” Yes.
I’ve been a fan for over 50 years and seen them live 50+ times. Relayer is one of my Fav albums! Patrick Moraz did a phenomenal job on his only contribution to Yes😔
Yes is considered to be for mature listeners. It’s also said that to Really hear and understand a Yes song-it must be listened to at least 3x. Gates is definitely one of those songs!😊
Most people struggle with this Album. I think is incredible.
So now that you’ve gotten through your first listen and know the story (war & peace), (a comment on here layed it all out), maybe it’ll make more sense to you! Ha if you think Gates is crazy..I dare ya to go on to Sound Chaser!❤❤❤
Just a thought-if ya talk TOO much you’ll lose people…almost me…but love this song and wanted to see you thru til the end. Do yourself a favor and listen again! It may be come a favorite.
I’m off to see what else you listened to…

Well that was a very enjoyable journey to take with you, I know Yes so well, they were at this time just pushing themselves, so showcase what they could do. This song was based on the novel war and peace, so it essentually about going into war with the knowledge you might not survive it. Then there is that maelstrom of conflict, and somehow you surviving it, finding yourself appreciating life so much more... I think if you listen to it you did, the end part really has the impact they intended, remember this was written in the 1970's, it was intended you sat down and listened to, maybe with a few mind enhancers... or medication... Yes back then were really on a journey, and they wanted to take you with them... Thank you for plunging into this, I hope it makes you think of how music can really make you feel...

Relayer is a master achievement from a monumental band. There is nothing like it. I love it. Patrick Moraz on keyboards was a wonderful addition to the line-up, albeit too short. Allan White and Steve Howe's performances are stellar. The track Sound Chaser is Yes at their experimental peak -- my favourite Yes song, followed by the ever so lush To Be Over - just gorgeous. What an album!!!

Hi Steve! Well, I nearly choked when I saw the thumbnail! I would never say you weren’t ready. But for beginner proggers these songs can be much! Bands like IQ and Marillion, which are considered art rock, are great to warm you up to the heavier mental gymnastics of prog. I’ve mentioned this song by IQ before. The road of Bones is a great in between song. Kayleigh by Marillion is more of an 80’s pop rock song. Anyway, love what you do!

Most Yes songs have to be listened to 4 or 5 times in order to feel like you understand what is going on (yer dance moves). Not only do they integrate so many parts into their songs but also different types of music (jazz, rock, folk, classical), all in the same songs. Try Heart of the Sunrise, Awaken or The Revealing Science of God (Dance of the Dawn). In order to really feel what they are doing, you should listen to their songs again after your reaction. Have fun !!!

I saw this for my first Yes concert in November 1974....I was so overjoyed that YES was regrouped and "relayered" with Patrick Moraz on keyboards after thinking they were gone.....Imagine my confusion hearing this for the first time from the back of Richfield Coliseum (Cleveland OH) with tinny acoustics and pure madness hearing it for the first time even before its release!

When Rick Wakeman left, the band wanted to get Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou (better known as Vangelis) to take over, but as he was Greek and the UK had not yet joined the common market, he was unable to get a work permit to allow him to play gigs in the UK, so they went for Patrick Moraz (who was Swiss but somehow did get a work permit). Moraz later joined the Moody Blues. Jon Anderson (lead singer of Yes) and Vangelis did make quite a few records together. You will love "The Friends Of Mr. Cairo".

OMG! This reaction is priceless. You definately got the feel of what it's supposed to envoke. This is Yes' interpetation of "War and Peace". The first part is preparation for War, the second part is the reality of War, and the last part is the aftermath - Peace. I've listened to this hundreds of times. The more you listen to it, the more it makes sense. Even the chaotic part makes sense (don't chop it out). This is not an easy piece of music, so hats off to you! Now if you want total "Yes" bliss, try "Awaken" when you decide to explore more Yes. You won't be dissappointed. Hope you kick this cold soon. US Roadie 1 signing off...

If you are diving into this side of Yes, you are ready for The Mars Volta. They are an early 2000’s band that were put together by the singer and guitar player from a band called At The Drive-In. When At The Drive-In broke up, The Mars Volta formed. With this change came in a complete change in music style. They went full progressive rock with hints of Latin music. I’m going to give you three suggestions which all come from their 1st album, Deloused In The Comatorium, which was released in 2003.
    Roulette Dares (The Haunt Of)
    Drunkship of Lanterns
    Take The Veil Cerpin Taxt
Side note, before the band could record this album, their bass player passed away. The producer of the album, Rick Ruben, has a lot of very famous friends, and he got Flea from The Red Hot Chili Peppers to play on the whole album.
I started you from the first album on purpose. If they gain your interest, I will be sure to continue suggesting from each album they have.

You are a brave man. This was the first song by Yes I ever heard in the seventies, and it took me many listens before I decided it was the most brilliant song I ever heard. Rick Wakeman had left Yes after Topographic Oceans, Swiss keyboardist Patrick Moraz replaced him on this album. I thought the pedal steel guitar was a country thing, but Steve Howe and David Gilmour taught me otherwise,

The yes line up for this album was Jon Anderson Vocals and main Writer, Chris Squire Bass, Steve Howe Guitar (Using a Telecaster on this one), Alan White Drums, and Keyboards Patrick Moraz who replaced Rick Wakeman. Moraz was previously with Refugee who was basically the Nice with Moraz replacing Keith Emerson. Sadly this was the only Yes Album with Moraz who was replaced with Rick Wakeman for the next album. Moraz brought Jazz into Yes and change the sound of the band significantly. After Moraz left Yes he went to play keys for the Moody Blues for a decade.

This is a piece that won't leave you alone if you dare revisit it. Every stage of tbe crisis of war is there, right from the initial interruptions of peace, the sense of a growing weight of oppression, the decision whether or not to resist and fight, the horror of the battle snd the devastating emotional aftermath. Even tbough Close to tbe Edge stands as their greatest musical arrangement, it is Tbe Gates of Delirium that I keep going back to and have become a bit obsessed with, it is incredibly dense and is probably the closest YES have ever come to a linear narrative. I think it is Jon's greatest lyric writing by far..
"Stand the marcher's soaring talons, peaceful lives will not deliver freedom,
    Fighting we know,
    Destroy oppression
    The point to reaction,
As leaders look to you, attacking.."

Your reactions to Yes never fail to entertain!
One never "overthinks" Yes, one only underthinks. 😅 They basically put one of the longest books ever written - War and Peace - to music. This song is pretty much what one should expect from that endeavour.
Its actually a song of three parts: 1) The politcal discussion and decision to go to war with a rival neighbour country. 2) The ride out to battle, the savage battle itself, and the victory. 3) The end of the battle, the sadness, regrets and the hopes for reconciliation.
Seen like this, the sections of the song make more sense.
Oh and a final thpught: I don't really think of Yes songs as songs (in the typical sense) they are more like sonic movies. There's always a story being conveyed but not only through the lyrics (or sometimes not through the lyrics, let's be honest) but through the instruments themselves. The emotions conveyed by the music reflects the story or epic and, like a movie, it's not usually your typical pop song vibe but the vibe you'd get from, not any movie, but a classic movie by the likes of Stanley Kubrik. You put on your headphones, close your eyes, and visualise the story for yourself.

Let's educate you on The Progressive Rock band, YES." Yes are an English progressive rock band formed in London in 1968 by lead singer Jon Anderson, bassist Chris Squire, guitarist Peter Banks, keyboardist Tony Kaye, and drummer Bill Bruford. The band has undergone numerous lineup changes throughout their history, during which 20 musicians have been full-time members. On this song, "The Gates Of Delirium" which is the opening song to the album, "Relayer," released in 1974, the musicians are: Jon Anderson>>>lead vocal and vocal arranger/songwriter; Steve Howe(How): guitarist; Chris Squire>>>Bassist; Alan White>>>drums/percussion; Patrick Moraz>>>keyboardist. These are also the musicians who perform on the entire "Relayer" album. The Gates Of Delirium is about War and Jon Anderson was inspired to write the song by the Classic Novel, "War and Peace" by Tolstoy. There are these themes of a Supernatural or Spiritual war.going on either now or long ago like in "Lord Of The Rings" by J.J. R Tolkien. Like "Close To The Edge" this song is a Masterpiece and considered the most infamous song of Progressive Rock today. later songs and became famous for their Cosmic Spiritual messages as well as their excellent musicianship. The song "Roundabout" was released in 1971.

Since it's about war and peace, and it's loosely based on the book by Tolstoy, it conveys the lead up to war, the war, and then peace with the Soon part at the end. The contrast of the build up to the release makes the Soon part more impactful than if it was just by itself. If the crazy prog stuff is too intense for you, they have a lot of stuff that is shorter, or simple, really mellow, fun, or catchy or whatever, like Onward, I've Seen All Good People, Turn Of The Century, Starship Trooper, Nine Voices, Wonderous Stories, etc and the singer Jon Anderson has a ton of amazing solo stuff such as Song Of Seven. Steve Howe the guitarist is off the hook amazing on that slide guitar which nobody else I've heard plays it like that.

Ah, Steve Steve Steve. Waited till I got me pipe and slippers for this. It’s up there with Close to the Edge for me. Others have covered the theme, but for me, the overall feeling is less organic than what came before and after. The album cover is all snakes and rocks and marching soldiers; the music is, at times, sharp, angular, crystalline, dissonant (to me). For all these reasons, it remains a singular Yes album, with Pat Moraz giving it a jazz push.

The initial elements are a prelude to war which kicks into a battle at the point where you got slapped by the fish! when the keyboard solo and crazy percussion of clashing swords starts. It ends with the aftermath of the battle and the glory and freedom ‘achieved’ before progressing into one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written IMHO as Jon muses on the reason for life itself in ‘Soon’. BTW there are some ‘Soon’ clips on YT including a live version should you need the peace without the battle.

HOLY FK! YOU DONE DID IT! This is as far as it goes. NOW you are ready for TALES from TOPOGRAPHIC OCEANS my friend! And let NO wimp tell you a discouraging word about that MASTERPIECE of GENIUS! Just tell them to go listen to RUSH and leave you be! ONWARD into the DEPTH of YES)))))))....BTW the lyrics here are unusually very literal & the music LITERALLY builds towards WAR into the lament towards forever lasting PEACE. IF YOU LISTEN TO THE LYRICS YOU'D KNOW what to feel... JEEZ!!! It ALL makes TOTAL SENSE ! LOL!!! This is their only album with new Keyboardist Patrick Moraz who's JAZZ FUSION influence added a different flavor to YES

Perfect reaction to this Most Challenging and ultimately beautiful Yes masterpiece. I loved your reaction "welcome to the Madhouse" because that is exactly Yes' intent. It is the battle scene of the madness of war with this being a 21 minute "war and Peace" interpretation....and the last third can be enjoyed in most Yes summaries and TH-cam with the last act just called "SOON!" th-cam.com/video/0pNm2VqLPx4/w-d-xo.html

This was too early after not having digested "Close to the Edge" yet 😂 And don't worry, even I - as a German - can hear your humor. And why should you lie about how you hear the song? There's enough guys doing music reaction who never have anything bad to say about any song. As a huge Yes fan, this song is not my favorite, but I wouldn't want to miss it. It's a masterpiece, but you have to be in the mood. Try "To be over" from the same album! And don't try "Sound Chaser" from the same album!

    Hi, Steve.
I don't know if I already suggested... If I don't suggested, now I suggest.🤓 Flaming Youth. This is a band which have 1 only album, but I suggest a reaction for this. Well, this band is "only" the first Phil Collins band (before Genesis).
Maybe you can prefer react to the entire album "Ark II". This is a "concept album", then...
Or, for a first contact, I suggest a video which you can find in TH-cam: "Flaming Youth - Changes - ARK-2 - (Phil Collins) • TopPop"
In TH-cam, you can find also more 2 songs from the same TV show ("Earthglow" and "From Now On") and various other videos (different songs in different TV performances, of course).
Thank you for your kindness and attention.
    🤝

@MusicForTheSoulReactions Here I list these videos, which makes an complete Flaming Youth "Ark 2" album experince, in order, with the best quality I found:
      - Phil Collins and Flaming Youth, Guide me, Orion Rare Original Color Footage 1969 (Brian Chatton)
      - Flaming Youth - Earthglow - ARK-2 - 1-11-1969 • TopPop (TopPop)
      - FLAMING YOUTH - WEIGHTLESS (alegareca)
      - Flaming Youth - 'The Planets' (excerpt from 'Ark 2' Album November 1969)
      - Flaming Youth - Changes - ARK-2 - (Phil Collins) • TopPop (TopPop)
      - Flaming Youth In the Light of Love and Pulsar (Jesica Clark)
      - Flaming Youth - From Now On (Immortal Invisible) - ARK-2 - 3-11-1969 • TopPop (TopPop)
Note: the "more Collins vocals" tracks are "Changes" and 2 segments in "The Planets": 'Jupiter' and 'Saturn'.

Delirium is the medical term for confusion! This is epic Yes , it is not a casual listen but so worth it they all at their best and showing off a bit , Rick Wakeman is very experimental but Chris Squire one of the best bassists ever, Steve Howe always trying to best Steve Hackett , the drummer bill bruford was also a drummer with King Crimson and played with Genesis , I am a Shrink who did a PhD in prog lyrics and I almost never understand their lyrics but I love this song because it sounds exactly like delirium. The Genesis fix for this is to listen to trick of the tail much easier than Yes , having said that when you feeling stronger the double album tales from the topographic ocean is a masterpiece but probably best done alone no work tomorrow and enough JD

    • @roygaiot8105
      @roygaiot8105 20 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Wakeman and Bruford were not on this album. And Wakeman is anything but experimental -- he's a showman. Patrick Moraz is the real deal with his jazz leanings - this guy can deliver some serious stuff. As much as I like Bruford (probably my favourite drummer), Alan White was perfect for this release with his raw energy.and intricate flourishes.

You know, Steve ( do you prefer Steve or Steven?) if you love synth so much, you might like to delve into one of the first prog rock bands…. Kind of the granddaddy of prog in my humble opinion, and that is The Moody Blues. Late 60’s. Of course, it wasn’t a synth then but a mellotron.

The title of the song should have been a tip-off of what was about to come your way. I've always said there should have been a disclaimer at the beginning of this song. A song that musically depicts the lead up to war, the war itself and then the aftermath it's not going to be meant to be an easy listen. They accomplished exactly what they set out to. To make you uncomfortable, and then the recovery and peace at the end. In reality, it's great composing, everything was done for a reason. Want you understand what they were attempting, and listen to it a few times, it makes complete sense and I don't know of any other band could have pulled it off as good as they did. This wasn't an anti-war song, it was about depicting the brutality, the insanity, the horrors of war. It was real risky business for them to approach this topic the way they did. Except for the aftermath of the war there is no way you could have catchy hooks that you can whistle to all day. It was meant to be disturbing.

I've tried listening to this quite a few times but I don't have the mental capacity to endure the cacophony of sound that is the main body of the song. "Soon" hits the spot but after this album I lost interest in the band. Punk rock had come along and "YES" started to sound too contrived.
