This song used to trip me up, but I remember a major breakthrough I had when I learned this. It's knowing where the major downbeats are. What tripped me up is I thought the first downbeat in the riff was on the A note, but it's on the first D note in the riff. In the verse section, focus on getting that downbeat right on the Gm chord. The Gm and D are played on the same beat. The song is in 6/8 which is challenging for people who aren't used to playing in 6/8. You don't need to count it out; just know where the 1 beat is. Then you can play the whole song by feel.

I've been trying to learn this for awhile, your video is the best one I've found. Thanks!

Excellent as always. I noticed on your second riff, the one following the g minor, you omitted thee notes (fifth string fifth fret followed by third string second fret followed by open fourth string) before going into the riff starting with fifth string first fret. When you play in the introduction you play these notes. Thanks again for the tutorials as yours are by far the most accurate and detailed.

Thanks David! And your probably right about the omissions... half the time I can’t remember which notes get muted or skipped altogether in some of these more active riffs

This is such a great video. Thank you. Is it common to want to start with an up-pick for each round of the first riff?

Thanks for the comment! As for your question, it probably has to do with where you're feeling the downbeat. I intuitively want to hit a downstroke with my pick for each round, but honestly has been so long since I've watched what Dave's right hand is doing that I can't remember. I'm pretty sure he's down picking it though

On that outro. When you strum it are you muting all the strings except the one you want to sound? I find this hard to keep it clean.

Yes I’m muting everything but the strings I’m specifically fretting

confusing as heck since the low E to me is the 1st string (closest to my eyes). in other words, when you say 5th string, I automatically think the B. to do this, i have to flip everything. also you accidentally said the wrong fret which slows me down as well. still a great video!!

Sorry about that wrong fret Brett! As far as the string names, I agree with you that it would make sense for the "first" string to be the low E... But I am actually using the correct numberings here... the 1 string is the high E and the 6 string is the low E...
