@@drmcgas far as I've heard, yes, it's like the golf ball dimples, but for your calf. It's worth like 5 watts or something and they're so cheap that it's easily the biggest upgrade you can make in terms of W/$. Also if you get nice high rise socks, it basically eliminates the need to shave for aero benefits.
Can GCN do a segment on warm up and cool down? “What do Tour riders do on the rollers before and after the stage?”, “Benefits of warm up”, “Benefits of Cool Down”, “How to incorporate into your rides/training”, “Duration”, etc.
Really depends on the stage and how hard it is from the get-go. But nothing fancy, maybe 5 mins Z1, 10 mins Z2, then a few minutes Z3/Z4 to get their HR up, and then a bunch more Z2 to get everything circulating.
Matteo is a super star now. I saw him training in Malibu a few years ago while on Movistar. He gave me a friendly wave back even though at the time I thought it was someone who just bought a Movistar kit. But then it dawned on me that it was an extremely well tailored kit. Later that day I saw on Strava it was him. Most Cat 3 riders won't wave back let alone a UCI WT pro. I hope he gets a win in the TdF.
The thumbnail made me think this would be about riders that don't wear padding when it really just means they wear expensive skinsuits vs. bib shorts 😂
It would be very interesting to do the same with the winter kit. We could see the (different ?) legs warmer, the different jackets, the overshoes (not only for aero) ...
Matteo comes across as a really nice guy and has clearly been a great addition to the Visma LAB line-up, and has during the 2024 TDF, been putting in some really hard turns for Jonas and the team - especially on stage 15. Go Matteo!!
For racing, the classic bib/jersey combo is dead. Even at the amateur level, most racers are wearing road suits for the aero and cooling benefits. Our club team uses champion systems, and it’s about $160 for a road suit, where as a comparable set of bibs/jersey can run up to $200+. So it’s actually more affordable to go with the road suit. They have become so comfortable with the “2 piece” design where the front zipper opens up like a jersey now, that I rarely wear normal bibs on any outdoor rides.
I started watching GCN to learn more about the sport my partner loves. Now I’m watching more GCN than my partner 🤣. I’ve been loving the various challenges, the warmth, and the humour. An unrelated question to the video (sorry), but I’m hoping the community could advise- what can I do for my partner whose neck hurts when cycling for long distances. Does anyone have any tips or tricks or suggestions?
Have they done a proper bike fit? That can be a factor. Also if flexibility and core are not as good as they can be you can get sore neck from too much drop. (Seat to bar height)
+1 for the bike fit. And the core strength. It goes along with the bike fit, but if your partner is too "stretched" out getting to the bars, that can cause neck fatigue/ pain as well. It goes along with the seat post height. Too high, along with too far ahead/ bars too low, will certainly cause this. There are several videos that GCN have done over the years that mention neck pain in them. You may be able to do a search for that specific term, along with GCN's name and come up with a fair few videos to watch. Best of luck, and go join your partner on a few rides, it's great fun!
@xinanis that's fantastic! Just remeber, it's not about the bike, it's about the ride!! I hope you enjoy it. I tried to get my family involved with cycling, tried several different kinds, but nope. It's just me. I use it as my decompression/ mind therapy, and also my workout. It's OK, but it could be better. It does get lonely sometimes. I'm always happy to hear when someone's partner takes a real interest in their hobbies. Have fun, and hope to see you around the comments!
The responses are hilarious. Matteo doesn’t know how many items or even types. He gets handed these things on competition days by people whose job it is to select, distribute, and clean items under the direction of a coach, trainer or marketing guy.
I believe it is this "PU RAIN JACKET PERFORMANCE MEN" for 500 pounds. Cause it looks like leather jacket and was developed in collaboration with Team Visma.
Any chance of seeing that "state-of-the-art technical material" being applied in ways that reduces road rash injuries? It's appalling, what we're seeing in recent years.
Honestly, jersey and kit material dries really fast. Maybe some thicker winter materials wouldn't, but my gear does. My better jerseys in particular dry crazy fast (Primal's Omni and higher - the Sport fabric also dries fast, but like.... +20-30mins). I take them out of the drier, hang them on my bike handlebars in the tiny apartment, and they'd be good to go before I finish unloading and sorting the rest of the laundry it seems. The shorts perhaps slightly longer, only due to the padding.... but those are made to dry out too, and not be soggy. Overnight is all they'd need, and if they have even one kit to rotate through, no issue.
I roll mine in a dry towel and jump on it, that gets it immediately kinda dry, another hour or so air drying and it's fine. A laundry mangle or wringer basically does the same, they are no longer used in private homes, but commercial laundry shops still have them, maybe the pro teams as well.
I HATE bib shorts! The shoulder straps drive me nuts and when I have pee they’re just holding my shorts up too high! These guys seem to be wearing a one piece skin suit , how do they get the front down for a “Nature Break”? Is there a zipper for that?
I've never understood the appeal of bibs. Who likes the extra material or a strap around both lungs? 99% of my teammates wear bibs. I think I'm the only one who prefers shorts and a jersey.
I just saw the AliExpress version of their jersey show up. I doubt it's the same stuff, looks like they just stole the pictures from somewhere. Funny though.
Team cars have toilet rolls. Check out Tom Dumoulin in the 2017b Giro. The mechanic gets out of the car with a loo roll in hand. th-cam.com/video/Br2fsbH9sy8/w-d-xo.html
I guess it would make some sort of difference if people watching this were actually going to compete in Le Tour and wear the stuff, but since there's a slim chance they are, then it's just another Advertisement to go out and buy extravagantly priced Clothing that may get you compliments at the Saturday Group Ride, but offer no more performance or comfort than lesser priced Clothing would.
The video is very clearly advertised as showing what pro riders wear in the Tour. The title 'The Kit Pro Riders ACTUALLY take to the Tour de France' was a big clue that I immediately understood to mean what it said. I'd suggest that if you read that and didn't understand what would be shown, then your comprehension skills need a little work. As Ollie said, for anyone interested in professional cycling it's really interesting to see how clothing has evolved in the last 10 years or so. And the clothing is not extravagantly priced to get you compliments on a club ride. It's designed for pros to race as fast as possible in as much comfort as possible. And it does offer superior performance and comfort. Anyone who's ridden in cheap bibshorts can tell you that.
Any surprises in Matteo's tour kit list? 🤔
few bib shorts just 6
Are aero socks really that much better than a clean-shaved leg? I'm surprised that everyone wears mid-calf socks in the peloton now!

Matteo is awesme! It is wonderful to see this new generation of American cyclists representing so well. Good luck Matteo to you and your team.
Some huge talent coming out of the states! 🇺🇸 Do you think he'll get a stage win?
@@gcn I think he will probably play the team role for Vingegaard and Van Aert, but I would really like to see him win a stage!
Finally he has a good team, just shows how different the levels are in the teams.

If you are looking for a warm-up / rollers routine, there’s one on the British Cycling website. 20 minutes duration.

Matteo is such a class act, wish him the best.
One of the best

Brand new socks are one of life's pleasures.
Can't have too many socks. 😄

hard to find longer versions of bib shorts but it seems like all the riders are wearing long shorts these days 10"+ inseam

Okay, so how do riders take a roadside wee while wearing a skinsuit? Inquiring minds wish to know . . . .
It looked like the skin suit had a long zipper that went down low enough to pull out the fire hose..
Not really specific to this video, but does anyone know why Alessandro Covi always wears one black shoe and one white shoe?
The Real Challenge for clothing is the Giro d Italia. From snowfall to dry heat
Cheers for Matteo! What a great guy.
Such a cool guy! We loved getting him on the channel 🙌
How do you do a nature break with a skinsuit?
Does anyone have a link to the jacket he was describing? it sounds fabulous.
Its probably the 500€ performance rain jacket on their website...

Could Ollie repeat what jacket that was? the Moto jacket? Who was that made by? Thanks for great vids!!

just look to the most expensive pieces and replicas of team kits

Why is it that these jerseys with ribbed sleeves are not available outside of pro teams?

Scientific testing suggests that they save between 3 and 6.5 watts for pro cyclists. For recreational riders, not nearly so much.
