Excellent review. But i love the aluminum. I love the worn look, and truly believe its the most solid of them all. My favorite color is green anyway. Lol.
I bought the 940-1 two weeks ago, Now I own the 3 in your video. I've been collecting knives for 2 years. When I bought one of these I was in awe. Thanks for the vid.
This was one of the best and most detailed breakdowns of the 940 I've watched. I haven't tried the the carbon fiber model yet but I've got the metal and G10 handles. And I've noticed the aluminum handle is actually just SLIGHTLY thinner than the G10 handle model. And it feels slightly more sturdy. Something about the balance and resonance of the way the vibrations flow through the handle of the metal handle makes me prefer it more than the newer G10. I really like the way the aluminum wears. Kind of rugged looking I don't mind the scuffs and marks.
Thanks, I've got a bunch more of these videos I plan to do, I just need to find the time. I'm disappointed in myself for not picking up a 940 sooner being such a big Benchmade fan. 2016 was much too late to finally get one. My -1 is gone now. It just felt a little too dainty (light weight) for my tastes. I would never have chosen to carry it over my aluminum handled one or the -2. Once I rack up enough Cabel's points I will probably still get the -1601 but just for collecting purposes.
The real big reason about the 940-1 is that the blade is so balanced with the scales that you can pretend to be thanos and balance it perfectly on your finger
excellent and very comprehensive review of the 940s..I love the worn-out look of your 940 in the green aluminium scales, excellent man !!!....gonna get the classic green ones.
Thanks. I do like the -2 and I'd carry it if my standard 940 weren't so worn already. I just took photos of the -1 so I can put it up for sale. I'll probably regret it but I want to replace it with a -1601 Cabela's exclusive.
Great knife. I use the Benchmade deep pocket clip for my 940. Nice comparison to the other knives. And thx for the little 0450 review i am looking to buy one for another edc knife in my daily rotation.
I'd recommend checking out the ZT 0450; it's a nice little knife and very comparable to the 940. I would probably prefer it to be a non-flipper and just use thumb studs to open but that's personal preference. I've got a lot of flippers now and the novelty is wearing off.
I put some masking tape on my digital calipers to prevent marking up my knives. After zeroing out it works like a charm! The screws inside my 940-1 sticking out doesn't bother me at all; I view it almost as extra support since the screws are nestled deeper into the liners. I just ordered a BHQ 940BK-2004 with CPM-M4 in natural/jade G10, & I'm excited to try the G10 scales. I've only got my aluminum 940 & my 940-1, so it'll be a new experience for me. I also ordered a blacked out aluminum 940 today with the combo edge. I realize I'm in the minority, but I love partially serrated knives & I think they're super useful. And the serrations stay sharp for flipping ever! They're a pain to sharpen, but not the worst thing in the world. Plus, I love using my Wicked Edge. Also, I thought I was the only person in the world who doesn't particularly care for the PM2. I've owned 7 & never could hold onto any of them. I appreciate that's it's awesome, just not for me. But I love my Maxamet Para 3. Even though I'm a big & tall guy with L/XL hands, the Para 3 just feels better to me. Anyway, great discussion! Thanks for the video! 😃
Thank you for a great comparison! I enjoyed it very much! I have just bought a 940-2 and I love it! But in Germany they sell it to a much higher price than in america!😔 I also hope that the opening of the knife becomes easier during the time of use, know it is a little bit stiff.... Many greetings from Germany, Mark
If you tighten the back stand-off screw, you can tighten the pivot more to eliminate blade play. I had the same issue until I cranked the back one down which relieved some of the pressure on the front (think see saw), which then allowed me to tighten the pivot but still allowed the blade to swing. I’m sure messing with the first stand off will also have an impact but mine was ok so I can’t speak to that. I also realize this video is ten years old lol but maybe this will help someone else.
It might have been difficult because of the curve at the back of the handle. A straight blade would probably hit it when closed. It might have worked if they did a slightly upswept wharncliffe like the Hinderer Half Track has.
The carbon fiber is “blade heavy”? The balance point is exactly perfect at the index finger below the axis-lock. It’s light, but that is a terrific asset.
Great video! Nice in depth review! I'm probably gonna pick one of the aluminum standard models up as I love the green and do like a good patina! I do somewhat agree with you though ... the aluminum does offer patina but in a somewhat banged up rough kind of way. I have seen some copper scales available for the 940 and could imagine that would offer a bit better of a patina but copper is also a soft medal and would probably have a smilier banged up feel. Thanks again!
I still have both the 940BK and 940-2. Now the BK wears Flytanium copper scales and the -2 wears Rockscale Design titanium scales. I like both much more but I love the one with copper scales.
excellent, detailed review. Some great points made. I too waited a while to get one of these, ended up with the Going Gear exclusive, 940-1701 with 20CV steel.
I was watching this video on my Samsung Galaxy and the audio seemed to be low, even though I had the volume on my phone all the way up. At times it was hard hear what you were saying.
Just to let you know, TJ Schwartz designed an amazing knife recently that does have/use the axis lock. It's called the Purpetua, it was funded through Massdrop and is being manufactured by Milit Knives. The Purpetua is going to have blade made of Nitro-V stainless steel.
photoman12001 The drop did end a while ago, I ordered it within an hour of the drop starting. It's going to ship in a couple of days. I was telling you about it, because I wanted to show/give an example of a non Benchmade, non fake/counterfit knive having the axis-lock. What's also cool is that Massdrop sent me a card with an awesome artist sketch of the Purpetua that was signed personally by T.J. himself.
Excellent review. But i love the aluminum. I love the worn look, and truly believe its the most solid of them all. My favorite color is green anyway. Lol.
Good video. Love my 940-1. I have perfect lockup with zero blade play. The 940 is definitely a must have in any collection.

I love the wear on the green one! That is for me the reason to buy one of those! 😎
Thanks for the info! 👍
One of the best reviews of this knife I’ve seen so you’ve got a new sub
Love the green after it looks beat up.
Great video. Definitely my favorite is the 940-2.
Thanks. I do like the -2 and I'd carry it if my standard 940 weren't so worn already. I just took photos of the -1 so I can put it up for sale. I'll probably regret it but I want to replace it with a -1601 Cabela's exclusive.
Been reviewing, had to stop video and just ordered online and pick up next week. Can’t wait1
Those long screws are a mystery to me as well. I had to take a Dremel tool to the four screws so they would be flush. Why don’t they correct this?

*THE KNIFE WHISPERER* 🤫
I have the bailout and the axis lock is a little too small. It doesn’t stick out enough to get a good purchase.

I agree with your PM2/Para 3 thoughts, so you’re not the only one. I actually thought I was 😂
Excellent review. Thank you
I had the same experience- it is a great tool.

Excellent, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Awesome EDC 940-2 for me also
19JUN67 19JUN67 I installed titanium scales on my 940-2. Love it.

940🦋
I’m waiting for a serrated model.
I wish these had a version with a wharncliffe blade

photoman12001 awesome!! Thanks for sharing!!
good taste, i have the same 3 models !

Those are nice. I like the 20CV blades on some of my other knives, especially my Grayman Dua.

Thomas Connolly It looks like that drop ended already. I did request a notification for the next one.

Hey bro. Did i sell u that custom pioneer. Lol. It looks just like one i sold. Lol.
It's possible. I bought it on the BladeForums Exchange.
That 940-1 looks like a clone, but this is the 2017 version. I might be wrong.
The top one has the groove and the clip on that one are common clone flags for a 940. Curious….
Why does this man sound so much like Edward snowden.
Carbon fiber has no flexibility, and I doubt G10:does either.
