    Another thing with the physics GRE that you and other people haven't mentioned: You should learn to cut your losses in the sense that, if you look at the question, you can tell fairly quickly a path to a solution. If you can't see a path and you know that you don't know how to approach answering the question, move on to the next one. Don't waste any more time thinking about the question you don't know how to do. Save that for when you get to the end. Then you go back and look at those questions more deeply and see if you see a path to a solution coming back to it with "new eyes" so to speak.

      This is how I remember taking my AP tests in highschool, got all 4s and 5s (except history) so it worked out well lol
      Feel like taking a GRE would be more stressful though. Isn't just a test that determines if you get a class checked off a list, it could be what determines if you get into a school (I guess the ACT/SAT are the same, but I remember thinking they were so easy I just didn't care. I wish I did care though. I got a 31, and the highest scholarship at my school had a cutoff at a score of 32, so I kinda screwed myself over and if I had studied just a bit I would've made a lot of money, but oh well)

    I did something completely stupid when I took the physics GRE...I took the regular GRE earlier that same day. Yep...back-to-back GRE's. My brain was mush after that. And to add insult to injury, as I walked back to my dorm room after I was done, an unexpected rainstorm drenched me to the bones. Worst. Day. Ever.

    Hey i don't think you can approach a competitive mcq test with deriving equations in mind. The most useful thing to do would be to have a notebook that contains all the formulas and have them memorised like your name. Off course you need to understand how the formulas came but having all of them in your mind will save all the time.

    plan on taking it this september. took a practice exam and scored down in the 400s, which brought on a bout of depression. turns out a fellow student told me she got the same, which is also depressing considering that was like 5%. as in, i did better than 5% of the students that took that particular exam (even though it was practice).

    • @AndrewDotsonvideos
      @AndrewDotsonvideos  6 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      William Garrison just be patient! It takes time to learn how to edit (I’m still learning tbh), to get comfortable talking in front of a camera, and to build an audience at all. If you’re doing vlogs, show, don’t tell. People watch vlogs because they want to watch a mini movie, not just listen to what it was about. I wasn’t very good at that, which is why I make what I make now.

    I took the test and it went well. This book indeed is very helpful ( if you use it for revision and narrowing down topics to read). I think I did well because I had read everything and revised my notes. The only thing that I think I could have done better is to take timed mock tests. I got really tired during the test and ran short of time during the second half. Solving 100 questions at one go takes a lot of mental stamina.
    Also my score would be around 750. Will it be enough to apply to good grad schools in US ?

    Congrats on being done with it! 🎉🎉
    I took the PGRE twice last year and, as a tip for anybody taking a subject test, I highly recommend studying early and choosing the September date over the October date. For the September test I was put into a half-filled, medium sized classroom and everybody got an entire table to work on. In October I was in a massive lecture hall filled to the brim with students, meaning everybody got a tiny fold-out desk and very few people could read the one small clock in the very back of the room. I heard the same sentiment from friends at my undergrad that took it this year

    Hey Andrew, need some advice. My undergraduate degree is in Electronics and Communication Engineering (from India) and masters degree is in Astrophysics (from the UK). I want to pursue my PhD in Astrophysics from the US for that I need to do a Physics GRE to show that I have got a good physics background.
    What do you recommend in my situation, I really don't have a strong physics background (though I am highly passionate about it) should I go with the test or look for a job?
    In brief I want to know, is there a way a person with no undergraduate degree in Physics prepare for Physics GRE in a year?

I didnt do too great on it but that was expected because I'm not a physics, math, or engineering major. I used the concerning the phy gre book also, and will be retaking it soon. (If you're wondering why I'm going through the trouble when it doesnt pertain to my major (biology) I didnt have much guidance from my undergrad counselors, I want to study astrobiology and astrophysics in grad school, so the phy gre is nessisary...everyone just said that you can apply to grad school regardless of your undergrad...should've done astronomy or physics, oh well. How did you end up doing on the test? I... did incredibly terribly. This was 3 years ago. I ended up not going into Physics graduate school and getting a job as a software engineer.
    There are parts of me that still regret it. I feel like I settled and ran away from my failings (even though I was a straight A student). I'm happy with the job I have right now, especially with the pandemic, but... that test crushed my soul and I just kind of gave up.
