Shakespeare's tragic masterpiece King Lear transcends time and space to meet changgeuk. Lear, a changgeuk adaptation created by the National Changgeuk Company of Korea in collaboration with top-tier artists, is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated productions of the year. Director and choreographer Jeong Yeong-doo, known for his refined sensibility and unique perspectives across various genres, works with the National Changgeuk Company for the first time. Bae Sam-sik’s script, which reimagines this Western classic as our own contemporary story, is brought to life by the music of two extraordinary Korean artists, Han Seung-seok and Jung Jae-il, offering the boundless spectrum of Korean traditional music. Stage designer Lee Tae-seop, a recipient of the Lee Hae-rang Theater Award, enhances the production with his creation of a serene yet dynamic world of water.

Your calm dream is easily blurred by a simple gentle breeze.
A long, tumultuous journey ends as waves subside into the ocean, after the inner turmoil and emotional battles of the characters. Lear describes human folly in resisting the inevitable flow of time like water, drawing the audience into a deep, infinite abyss. The intertwined tragedies of Lear, Gloucester, and other characters come to life as their blurred vision reflects the struggles that resonate with us today.

A choreographer and director focused on the temporality and form of the body, Jeong Yeong-doo has persistently explored physical movement and sought collaboration across various genres. He founded Doo Dance Theater in 2003 and continues to be active with numerous works.
Playwright: Bae Sam-sik
Bae Sam-sik is a playwright renowned for his sharp structure, deep reflection, and vivid dialogue, spanning Eastern and Western, classical and contemporary themes. His works often carry a warm, humanistic perspective, with music and rhythm flowing through his words and the spaces in between.
Composer & Music Director: Han Seung-seok
A master singer well-versed in pansori, gut, and percussion, Han Seung-seok has explored and implemented the human values and musical forms that pansori should embody today. He has previously worked with the National Changgeuk Company in Byeon Gang-soe and Ongnyeo and Return of Rabbit.
Composer: Jung Jae-il
A composer, performer, and music director whose work spans film, theater, dance, and exhibitions. Jung Jae-il is known for his boundless versatility, earning praise for his work on The Trojan Women, the film Parasite, and the drama Squid Game, combining Korean and Western music.

조기예매했던 공연이 코로나로 취소되었다가 운좋게 3.29 추가 공연을 예매하고 봤습니다. 항상 기대 이상의 공연이었지만 정말 정말 좋았습니다. 우리가 너무 잘 아는 '리어' 지만 국립창극단 만의 해석. 특히 물을 이용한 무대구성은 정말 신선했습니다. 공연시간 3시간의 풍성함과 황홀함이 아직 맘 속에 남아있습니다. '가장 가까운 국립극장' 으로 다시 한 번 만날 기회가 오기를 기다립니다.
감동과 떨림이 강해서 오래도록 기억되는 작품이 되지 않을까 싶고 엄청 대단한 기억으로 각인될 거 같아요.
준비하시는 모든 분들의 노력이 헛되지 않게 건강하게 만날 수 있기를 바랍니다!!!
