For years the Canadian Lancaster was on a pedestal by Lake Ontario in Toronto. Glad they rebuilt it!

    • @SectionNyne

Just to be clear, the Lancaster nicknamed "Vera" that is flown by the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum and is seen in this video, is NOT the same Lancaster that was on the pedestal by Lake Ontario. The CWHM Lancaster is Lancaster number FM213. It was purchased by the CWHM in 1979, was restored to flight status by 1988 and has been flying regularly ever since. The Lancaster that was on the pedestal is Lancaster number FM104. It sat on the pedestal until 1999. In 2018, after several years in storage, it was transferred to the British Columbia Aviation Museum where they are apparently hoping to restore it to airworthy status as well. If they do manage to get it flying again, then with any luck it will mean that in a few years, there might be as many as 4 flying Lancsters in the world. The two seen in this video, PA474 nicknamed "Thumper" and FM213 nicknamed "Vera" as well as Lancaster number NX611 nicknamed "Just Jane", which has been undergoing restoration in the UK for the last several years and will hopefully be flight worthy in 2020. And FM104 if it can be restored to airworthy status.
I've got my fingers crossed that at some point in the future I'll be able to see a 4 plane Lancaster formation flying overhead.

Sorry no that Lancaster is in British Columbia now. The Canadian Lanc is out of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. I was part of a group that was trying to have the Toronto Lanc restored and put back on display.

Barry simply has his lakes muddled up. FM213 was displayed on a pylon in Ontario until 1979 (at Goderich which is adjacent to Lake Huron) prior to re-build by Canadian Warplane Heritage.

My father flew in a Lancaster Pathfinder more than 60 times during the War as a mid-upper gunner. The sound of the Merlin engines makes me thing of him every time. R.I.P dad! We who came after owe you all so much.

My father did like wise . 467 squadron pathfinders , out of Grimsby , 35 missions , tail and mid-upper gunner . I still have his log books .
It records a crash landing back in Britain ... having had an engine taken completely out of the wing over Germany .
He volunteered , he had been serving in the AIF in Egypt .

Amazing still brings a lump to my throat, my grandad flew during WW2, mum could never remember if fighters or bombers as she was only little herself, well before i was born, but he was only of the lucky ones that came home she said, kudos to all the brave souls that fought for our freedom, air/sea/land. We all owe you a debt that can never be repaid, and yes you ALL should be remembered.

VeRA and Thumper, the last two Avro Lancasters in flight. Be nice if Thumper could come across the Atlantic in the near future and have a reunion with VeRA. I've have both Lancasters on a DVD that I purchased online from the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, at the end of October, when they flew together in England. It's fabulous!!

I live near Hamilton Ontario Canada and see VeRA fly over our house nearly every Saturday at around 11am. They have many beautifully restored air craft in airworthy condition that fly all summer and into the fall. There was a fire in their hangar years ago that destroyed a few of the aircraft including a Hawker Hurricane. Luckily they were able to get VeRA out away from the fire. They rebuilt the museum and now it’s open for visitors year round and offer flights to the public in most of the planes including the Lancaster

I took the kids to see VERA when it was over and for those from Canada reading this, I can’t tell you how much it meant, how deep the crowds were or how long the traffic jams. Two Lancasters together is really something but the very knowledgeable crowds were there because of the sacrifice of that generation, of the time when the UK and Canada were joined at the hip. Indivisible under God in the face of unspeakable tyranny. The RAF Museum in North London acknowledges that it is impossible to overstate the contribution Canada made to WWII, and it truly is. Both World Wars in fact. A Mari Usque Ad Mare. God save the Queen!

Went to the Shoreham air show the year before the disaster, both these beauties were supposed to be there, but due to mechanical issues only one of them turned up. Then a few weeks later on a sunny Sunday afternoon they both unexpectedly flew over our house in Worthing. Amazing sight!
And then... My sister lives in a village near Sywell in Northamptonshire. Turns out they were forever practicing formation flights over her house and she was sick to death of the sight of them. She also got fed up with the Vulcan flying over her house as well!
I need to get a new sister! Lol

I realise now that when my father flew these machines in WW2, he was experiencing the ultimate power of his time, consisted of skill, instinct, timing, incredible sounds, hope, fear, luck, thrill and terror. I was a world champion athlete with an experience founded on several of the above, except three items. Luck, the sounds and the terror. No wonder he never talked about it.

I don’t have any Lancaster parts , but I have Haiifax parts from Trenton when they rebuilt the plane that went down in 🇳🇴 . I was fortunate to hear stories from Lancaster pilots, navigators and gunners in many legions many years ago . Beer was on me . They were all humble men, some horrified what they had to do. War is pain and suffering , yet it still continues today .

The Canadian one always flew behind the RAF one except the day when the Canadians went home. That day they took off from RAF Coningsby for a short tour around the area, both Lancasters and two fighters. The Canadians led that formation until they broke off to head north and home. Just wait until the Pantons get NX611 airbourne, then the Canadians must come back and for a three ship season.

    • @MarsFKA
      @MarsFKA 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@Bud Fields Restoring a Lancaster to flying condition and then keeping it in that condition requires enormous resources. The Battle Of Britain Memorial Flight is part of the Royal Air Force, so the facilities are in place to keep the aircraft in the air, but the Canadian aircraft project requires private funding. A long time ago I saw photos of the Canadian aircraft at the start of its restoration. The interior was a mess and someone had posted a notice saying "Start anywhere. It all has to be done".
Two more Lancasters, one each in Britain and Canada, are being restored to flying condition.

There one at the Bomber Command Museum in Nanton, Alberta just south of Calgary. There were 5 Commonwealth Air Training airfields in the area during the war. Every summer they bring it out of the hanger and fire up the four engines. If I recall correctly, I recently read the volunteers at the museum are working to restore a Mosquito to airworthiness.
