I still can't believe Gilford didn't get a Emmy nomination for guest appearance on a series. This was seriously his best acting of the entire show. Made it seem so real.
One of the most powerful episodes I've ever seen in TV history honestly. Even when regulated to guest appearances, Matt Saracen was pretty much the heart of the show.
It's truly hard to watch. Such a powerful performance. Gilford was outstanding, as he was in virtually every one of his scenes. Definitely the heart and soul of FNL
Two incredibly touching parts of the scene. Julie staying by Matt’s side the entire service. Holding his hand and sitting by his family, and staying with him as he picks up a shovel to bury his Dad. And also, the fact that Matt’s Grandmother who initially would rather be in a home than have anything to do with Shelby. Held Shelby’s hand while Shelby did her hair.
The shot of the shovel covered in blood as Julie watches and cries just haunts me to this day. Absolutely no dialogue just the eerie sound of the shovel and dirt and the music. How the hell did Zach not win an Emmy for this scene alone?? My God
This to me is still the best hour of television I have ever seen. The fact that Zach Gilford never won an Emmy for this performance is crazy to me. Now that we have the Friday Night Lights podcast with Zach on the panel I cannot wait until they get to The Son and Zach can go in depth on how he approached this episode
Oh, please.... She tells Tim in the episode that she was on semester break and came home to see her daddy. Matt's dad's funeral just happened to coincide.
Love the music that plays in the beginning of this scene. This song also played during the State Championship ending in Season 3 (which in my opinion is the best scene in the show).
One of the best scenes I’ve ever watched overall in a show. Just the acting from EVERYONE was so good. The key people did PHENOMENAL. Gilford deserved some nomination or award for this. The script writers did amazing too. I will never get over this whole story line in the show
this episode was emmy worthy idc what anyone says. the acting from the whole cast and specifically his acting in this episode was so realistic. i forgot i was watching a show.
Once You realize that the majority of this show's “Matt Saracen” episodes become some of the best in the series you really wish you'd have more of them
That story he shared for the eulogy sounded very relatable and universal. I can see why everyone says this episode felt real. Dope writing and even better acting. 👌🏼
This and the funeral home scene where they made the director open the casket for Matt😩😭 The shot focused on Guilford’s eyes/face only and the horror he conveyed was award worthy 🙌🏾
i can understand why Matt needed to shovel the dirt on his own; but i would have suggested Landry and even Riggins doubling back and help bury his father. one last act of devotion from his best friend and his teammate for their QB1...
Going back thru & I know how old it is but just how amazing the show is. I had to rewatch. I think it was perfect because Riggs & Landry saw him thru everything. Being on the field with him drinking, being at the wake, even making sure he saw his father in the funeral home, & the funeral. They gave him that moment to be alone, give him the time he never had & felt he was robbed of with his father. It was powerful him being alone.
One of the most hardest things to do is to bury your Father.. I remember reading once : In times of War... Father's bury son's.. In times of Peace.. Son's bury Father's.. Oooooh the irony for Mat..
In his heart, he really wanted to go to Chicago, but he also felt that he owed his allegiance to his grandma and wanted to take care of her, because she was the only one there for him during his childhood. Well what happened was when he found out that his grandma was set for life after his dad's line of duty death, and Julie was going to end up going to college outside of Dillon after she completed High school, it was time for Matt to Do Matt for a change.
@@nateflannery9365 I think it also had to do with Grieving. He figured it was time to make a change but he also was bottling up his grief from his Dad’s death. So he up and left trying to escape his grief.
Totally agree with this. He would have gotten family separation pay and hazard duty pay on top of his regular pay, which at 20 years, even 15 years, would have been more than enought money to take care of Matt and Grandma Saracen.
The way the grave diggers walked away so easily says that that sort of thing has happened before- sometime people just grieve like that. So they just let them, and maybe come back later to adjust anything that needs fixing. Good guys there 👍
Yeah. Lyla was a cheerleader and was around Tim riggings and everyone else at different times. And buddy’s still a booster for Dillons football team so he had to show support for one of the players.
Laundry’s Friend Devin was there she was not associated with Matt…… Matt’s Dad Worked For Buddy and his whole life was the Dillon Panthers and Matt was the Quarterback when the Panthers won the State Championship and Lyla was kind hearted even though she made some mistakes……
Got killed in Iraq. He was riddled with PTSD and couldn't handle civilian life. There's one episode where he comes home and tried to be a family man and adapt back to a normal way of life. He couldn't do it ended up going back in the army and got killed on his next deployment

Without a doubt

Yep. 'The Son' is untouchable. Matt's journey was probably the most precious of the series. This will go down in history.

I never understood why his hands was bleeding.
@@blyind6991The shovel is wood, so it was probably pieces of it breaking into his hand

it’s a shame we won’t know. the podcast has ended
@@JTMoney22 omg why did it end?
Most powerful episode of the series. The dinner scene kills me every time
This episode had me all choked up. Gilford put up an Emmy worthy performance.
That episode is one of the best of the decade. Compelling, beautiful, and heartbreaking.
He did such a good job acting as matt Saracen, obviously for the whole show but especially in the few episodes that he was in in this season.
"How about Saracen sleeping with the coach's daughter?" -Riggins chiming in.
Still brings me tears to this day
He should’ve gotten an Emmy for the performance he had in this episode.
One of the most underrated shows of all-time and one of the best episodes of any show period.
I love that Layla came all the way home just for Matt’s dads funeral.
Oh, please.... She tells Tim in the episode that she was on semester break and came home to see her daddy. Matt's dad's funeral just happened to coincide.
Matt grabbing the shovel is a pivotal moment in his life. "This is my father. This is my duty. This is my family." Well acted, written and shot.
I commend Matt for that gesture. Very humbling.
Love the music that plays in the beginning of this scene. This song also played during the State Championship ending in Season 3 (which in my opinion is the best scene in the show).

Anyone notice the blood on the shovel? Gotta love the attention to detail.

Saracen wanted to stay in Dillon because of his grandma and Julie but he moved to Chicago a few days after the funeral

Never got to watch this too much. Kids were at the peak of all their activities. When time allows, this will be my first binge watch
I’m a 45 yard old man and teared up when I saw this the 1st time.😢
Greatly underrated performance
Very sad. I never knew my dad. Hit home with me.
Scene gets me every time. 😢
Anyone else notice the blood on the handle at the end?
It was red paint it glue.
This show was so u underrated.
Honestly Matt Saracen is right about everything he says 3:30……
Great tv show ever!
This scene will forever break my heart
This is probably the heaviest and most powerful moment of the entire series
I hate this scene so much because it seems so real
pain.
I want my daughter to marry a young man like Matt Saracen
We all do
Does anyone know the very first song in this clip? The keys are beautiful.
Hold up he was in for 20 years but didn’t make enough money to pay the bills so that his soon didn’t have to work.

Me watching Friday on Netflix while watching clips 💀

@Jonas Jelich ok ty i just didn't get this far I knew about his dad coming home in the first season

I wonder if when he got older Matt ever realized his dad actually didn't die for anything important. Just protecting imperial interests in Iraq
