Reading this made me start to run through my memories to remember the first thing I ever built. I guess technically it would be a fence because my dad would constantly make us fix the fence. The first thing I built from scratch that I designed myself was a hydraulic press. I didn’t want to spend over $100 bucks on a crappy one when I needed one for a project years back. I went to the hardware store and bought tons of stuff to build my own. When all was said and done I spent more than I would have buying a brand new professionally made one. Haha! It was still really fun making something technical like that from scratch though.

At each of the joints I'd suggest adding a letter so if you disassemble it you know how it goes together. The top bit especially will be a pain to get the dowels matched when high up and matching A-A, B-B will make life a lot easier.

It would be cool if, in addition to Two-Minute(ish) Tuesdays, you add a segment called Wide Awake Wednesdays (in honor of Vlad) adding featurettes on your Woodworkers with Disabilities initiative. We all need to open our eyes a bit and become just a little more inclusive. I also think it would be a great way to spur donations to the cause. Best of luck to you no matter what you choose to do.

Gotta admit, I much prefer solid wood for the frame and steel or rebar reinforced ply for the sleeping platform. But I'm also pretty rough on my furniture. For a girl that age you ought to buy a couple of strands of fairy lights to wrap around the bedposts and crossbars. Bonus points for ones made to look like flowers on a vine.

We planned on using solid maple for the frame, but we couldn't source any locally.
