Roger, I'm glad you perceived the fun of this little camera. I would say Rollei 35 forever!
I've got a Rollei 35 Tessar f3,5/40mm in 1974 and I've shot hundreds of films with it: B/W, colour and colour slides. I had it always with me and it has been a real comrade in daily life and during my travels. Because of the shortest focus of 90cm and its light weight, making a selfie was simple: hold the camera in your hand, place the index on the release button, stretch your arm, aim the lens on yer face and shoot!
I have shot mine up till the end. You must know that in the film transport system a brass sprocket connected to the handle, drives a plastic sprocket further in the transport chain. Metal and plastic are a bad combination and the plastic sprocket worned out eventually. From another Rollei camera wreck I took that plastic sprocket replacing the worn one in mine. And I shot happily after.

I bought this camera when it was new, about 50 years ago and it is my go to camera for days out "just in case" I see something- worth photographing. I can recommend the Sunpak GX14 flash to go with this as it is perfect with the upside down hot shoe

Fabulous cameras. I have more than a few and my SE is absolutely my first choice for a camera to take with me. The design of the higher end ones is so clever. Everything can be seen from one position; speed, f stop, meter. They are a joy, so glad you have one…. Perhaps the prices will go up now!

I've used a Diana Mini 35mm for the last 12 years or so. About the same size as that Rollei, all manual, no meter. It's one of those "Lomography" cameras, so you probably wouldn't like it, as the whole schtick with Lomo stuff is that they are made with cheap plastic parts modeled after old Soviet and Chinese toy cameras, with soft focus for that "lo fi" look. But it fits in my pocket, and importantly it has a bulb mode and a tripod socket so I can shoot in low light. Maybe I should look into one of these Rollei 35 devices as it appears to have an acceptably sharp lens.

Nevertheless of the vignetting issue, I love this camera, as well as the older silbling Rollei B35 (with selenium meter - no battery required), for being so handy. Just a hint: Rollei isn't pronounced as "Rolly", That syllable at the end of "Rollei", written as "ei", is in german language pronounced exactly like the english word "eye" - always.

hello Roger, greetings from Serbia 🙂
Your light meter is probably not working because the wire has become unsoldered, or should I say un-welded and that is difficult to fix because they didn't solder the wires in the factory, but somehow welded them, and since the wires are thin, it is impossible to weld them with a household hand tool , so Sunny Sixteen is your best friend 🙂
I have tested about 70-80 Rollei 35 cameras so far, (Rollei 35, Rollei 35 T, Rollei 35 S, Rollei 35 SE, Rollei 35 TE, Rollei 35 Classic...) and I fell in love with them 🙂
If you manage to get your hands on an S, SE or Classic model, you will be delighted with the Sonnar lens, Tessar is ok, but Sonnar is wonderful 👌

My method of estimating distances is to transfer known reaches or lengths into the photographic situation:
    - a relaxed finger span is about 20cm
    - my arms with stretched fingers just reach over the 80cm kitchen table
    - I'm a bit less than 1.80 metres tall
    - I need a parking gap of round about 2.5 metres to park my car without hindring mine or my neighbours door operation
    - My car needs a gap of about 5 metres if I want to park it parallel to the street
    Accordingly:
    - 1m is the distance my fingers can reach plus a finger span
    - 2m is about the distance my head would touch the ground if I fell forward like a tree plus about a hand span
    - 2.5 m is the width of the parking lot
    and so forth
After a while, these estimations work even better than most range finders.

I’d quite like one of these but have been a bit put off by the lack of a rangefinder. Looks like you were quite successful with focus though. But, I have an Olympus XA so can I justify the Rollei too? If I find a cheap one I’ll go for it.

Besides 35mm SLR's and 120 TLR's that I use occasionally, I love compact Rollei 35's and half frame Olympus Pen S and D's.
Really "pocketable" cameras that I could bring along everyday without much space in my bag.
I hope you could feature using the original 1959 Olympus Pen S.

  • @helgividar
    @helgividar ปีที่แล้ว

I like this camera. In the hands of a skilled photographer it produces decent photos. 40mm is my favourite focal length. Sunny 16 is an approach every photographer should get himself familiar with. It is the same as overcast 8 and hazy 11. But be careful with Sunny Beach 22.

Love my old Rollei 35 LED. It was the first camera I bought with my own money in 1986, and I used it as my main camera for 2 years working as a trainee newspaper photog on my local paper. It was an amazing camera to learn with. To this day I can estimate distance with uncanny accuracy. I used it (upside down!) with a Nikon SB28 flashgun and used hand loaded canisters loaded with Tri-X from bulk rolls, most of the time. I later changed to Ilford HP5 when Kodak put prices up. I've just ordered some more film to shoot a personal project using the Rollei. Thanks for reminding me just how much fun this camera really is.

Thanks for sharing Paul. Was there any change in quality when you switched to HP5?

    • @PaulSaxbyPhotography
      @PaulSaxbyPhotography ปีที่แล้ว

@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss Not really, Tri-X was a bit grittier in my opinion, which worked really well for Press work as it was easier to take a good litho reproduction from it, but it didn’t actually make much difference to how we worked. I always preferred to rate Tri-X at 320 but HP5 was 400 by default. Everything was processed in ID-11 except if we had a rush job, when we would rate HP5 at 50 and push it through a diluted litho dev (the name and ratio has gone from my mind) which actually produced an awesome neg, really easy to print with ultra fine grain. The dev time was only 90 seconds and we generally printed the negs while they were still wet.

For street photography I would prefocus and shoot from the hip. No need to look through the viewer, eye level is boooooooooring.

It’s a great and sheit camera at the same time, rollei35 cheap models eat film, their mechanics aren’t precise enough both B and LED version, had them both, same crap.
Minox35ML though, no problem ever, oh, well, I had, twice, the shuttermechanism is vibration/shock sensitive and would lock up and needed repair easily. Otherwise, wonderful.
Rollei35 SE, TE, S, T models german or singapore made can’t say a word, hope it’s better.
I use as a compact a Ricoh R1 and a Barnack Leica IIIF, the later simply works, the first needs expensive batteries.

Because English generally does vowel combinations reverse to German.

Makes sense. I guess how we say "Z eye sss" (Zeiss) is correct. Interesting. Americans say "N eye Con" instead of Nikon. Tomatoes etc. Also we say "RolleiFlex" (Rollyflex). Now, here's the tricky part, to say "Roll-eye" Flex doesn't roll off the tongue in conversation like "Rolly-Flex" does.
