I don't buy into the film versus digital either. I like the hands-on nature of film photography and the fact that it slows you down. But there are sometimes when I just want images without the circus, especially in colour which I cannot develop myself. Interesting video - thanks.
For those of us of a certain age colour used to be a fearful thing, and colour printing more so. In these days of easy temperature control and reasonable scanners (though not as good as they were) the only thing that should hold anyone back is film price and chemical lifetime (oh and perhaps a spouse who doesn''t like the same things being used for food preparation and photo developing). I have a great film lab round the corner but if I have fresh chemicals they don't get a look in and I keep quiet about the measuring jug.
@@philwoodall9023 I usually just use digital for colour, but some color film has some magic to it that no editing will get you from a camera. Kodak gold is a favorite, though ektar and slide film are also very nice.
I develop my own C41 and E6 they are super easy, but they do take time, I get down to about 25 minutes per roll of 120 or two rolls of 135, loading, developing and hang to dry. But if you factor in time took to develop them and all the effort, it might be more wise to just send it out for develop at about $5 per roll.
I use liquid electrical tape with a small applicator to seal small holes in bellows. Make sure it's completely cured before closing up the camera and bellows or it will bind it and make situations a lot worse.
On my first view I preferred the pics on the left side. Then two views later I noticed more highlight detail in the fence line with the tall grasses. A couple of views later I could consistently see more shadow detail and more highlight detail with the digital pics. That said I prefer the film because it was more punchy. Interesting experiment. I really loved how you didn't make a big deal about the "monochrome camera" . Even though its a £5k Leica Q2 monochrom, the pinnacle of B&W digital photography, at least at 28mm.
I used a 50/50 mix of fabric glue and black acrylic fabric paint when I worked on my 1917 Kodak No 3 Autographic. Three or four very thin coats, letting it dry fully between coats, and I slowly and carefully worked the bellows between each coat. Added some 3d printed adapters for it to shoot 120, giving me roughly five or six 6x12 shots. I’m still dialing in the twist count to get accurate numbers.
I fixed pinholes in a shutter with black silicone. The trick is to dilute it with paint thinner and apply with a small paint brush. Might work for the bellow just as good.
Thanks! Good shots. I liked the way you discussed the light. Especially at the beginning, I only saw an overcast sky with 50 shades of grey. I also have 1 digital camera, which I use for “convenience”. It’s not for photography, but for taking images. Many adjustments are a matter of postediting at home. It has so many functions somewhere in the menu that I no longer bother to find. What I do like is that it is now set to fast autofocus that can be easily corrected by just turning the focus wheel of the lens. Another plus is that I can change the ISO.
11:58. You inspired me to take a picture of the common Hazel with my Zenit 3m and Ilford FP4 Plus. It looked really great in black and white. It is a kind of an adventure to take black and white pictures of plants and flowers because of the lack of colours. But I keep trying. Also tried the woodland crocus. I am taking my Zenit with me on almost all my bicycle trips
Hi Roger! Nice shots! I just recently picked up a Canon Powershot G2, its basically my first digital camera. I've been treating it like one of my film cameras. I take one shot and move on, especially because my memory card is only 128mb, and can only capture around 80 to 90 images. I don't want to spend alot of my time staring at a screen editing digital images. I mainly use it for color photography and have been having fun with it. I just bought the G3 for the same reasons... Color photography as close to film as possible. I do B&W on film, color is too expensive on this medium. I recently bought an olympus c-5060 for 40euros. Beautiful camera and beautiful images coming out of this 5 Mpix ccd sensor.
I no longer shoot dim but I do understand the appeal of it. The cameras are beautiful and a joy to use. Film still looks great. But digital is quite nice too and so much easier and affordable. I still have a bunch of film cameras and I may use them again.
Hi, love the video. I’m sort of tired of the film/digital argument, because they are different mediums and have their own unique properties. If you take the computer out of film which is impossible for TH-cam, then the image is only as sharp as the focusing on the enlarger (ie: grain). On a PC, both film & digital can be enhanced by sharpening, clarity, etc. My problem (and do I have problems!😂), is the heavy handedness of most images that are run through the computer. Of course, whether as a hobbyist or professional, if you’re making art, it’s up to you how it looks. I never criticize a photo if the person is really proud, because 1: why should I hate on their achievement, and 2: we all need encouragement. Anyway, great video.
Tesa Tape, cloth backed with a low tack and very mouldable. Works on bellows and instances where the seals have perished on SLRs and compacts. It even improves the grip on plastic cameras.
Re the light leak , a dab or two of liquid tape does the trick, or if you're in the Refurb mood a full spray of it, it's what the Refurb guys use, btw great entertaining vid 👍
I have a couple of the Mamiya6 cameras and they fold up almost to pocket size, although a little heavy for the pocket. The lenses were simple (I think they were literally a single lens) and so they weren't too sharp. Also you can't attach filters easily for polarizing or B&W contrast and such. Because of this I actually like using color negative more then B&W with these cameras because the CN gives you more latitude and the soft focus gives you that '50's color neg look. As you say, the Mamiya6 is just more fun to use as a photographer. Thanks for a great and fun video on a great and fun camera from the '50's.
Sussed out the 28mm photo's straight away! Always a sharper background at a distance :-) Cracking vid m8, Really cool shots in there.... Both film and digital :-)
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss If my napkin math is right, I'd guess the 28mm would need to be about 3 stops wider to match something close to the look of the 75mm. 28 at f/2.8 for the 75mm at f/8.
Top tip that I was told many years ago........ put elastic bands on your wrist if your shooting 120...... have watched the white tab that sticks down the film after shooting going flying off in the wind many times....the band s saves the day.
Nice work Roger. Yep the depth of field gave it away. But, detail and tones are very close. I have a Fujica Super 6, when scanned at the optical resolution of my scanner, gives 70MP's ! Not bad for a $100 used camera . Thanks. KB
Any day taking photos is a good day, especially nice winter days. Here me out, I've got a crazy idea. I've got a Nettar 518/16 is great shape. Only thing is the fastest shutter speed is 1/200. Not nearly fast enough considering I'm in Florida. I'm cobbling together a Leica a36 yellow #2 filter with an adapter ring and a ND filter. A little filing, a little brass to shim, and some epoxy to keep it all together. Touch wood it'll work.
Hard to pick. Couple of thoughts. The Leica mimics Bk. and Wh. photography really well. And your overall Bk and Wh. photography skills using film is excellent. Kudos man. Very good video as always
I honestly think the old glass makes more of a difference than whether it's film or digital. Vintage lenses just always seem to render images I enjoy looking at more than modern "perfect" lenses. Great channel BTW

I can always see the difference between the two. Honestly tho, I'm done with film. It's gone from an affordable past time, to a niche that has become prohibitively expensive. Sold my Bronica SQ-AI, Super Ikonta C, all my colour film, Canon A-1, Kodak 35 Rangefinder, Fed II that I had literally made my own, but painting it black, but leaving the base plate chrome.. I even painted the lid inside flat black, to help reduce reflection, and increase the contrast of the rangefinder.. the person who bought it got an absolute peach of a camera. Even sold my 6D. So now I enjoy watching people shoot film, while I just futz around with my phone camera... Saving up for a new mirrorless system. Always loved film, but I do not love the prices of film, or the cost of processing. All that said, I do still have a few film cameras I will keep, as I will continue to shoot black and white here and there...
I completely understand. I have a lot of film cameras that I bought over the years. I was fussy and only bought nice ones. They have all gone up 5 fold. I still do b/w. But I don't bother ache colour since the price became outrageous. I very tempted put 20 of them on ebay, keep the other half. It's a real shame, but the price has got out of hand. I'm surprised young people are talking it up. I found an olympus mju on ebay last week £250. That's 3x more than I paid new.
@@jondr.8933 I am just astonished at the prices.. Funny how it went from a "for the masses" to "I can't afford it." In just a few years.. in just over a decade, I was able to buy a roll of E6, and have it processed for about $20 round trip.. today that same roll is over $60 all in.. So 3x the price of many cameras, some waaay more, like AE-1s for instance. To 3x the price of film.. on the low end.

I could easily tell from the depth of field which is film … and yes, depending on the subject and effects, you want to achieve, the depth of field is one of the reasons for still using medium format film cameras. Other than that, the difference is always hard to tell for me on black&white pictures. Color is another story, because every color film has a certain unique tint, which is the main reason for me to still shoot film.
I Alos heard you said, Rog that you tried a new fixer by Zone Imaging. I hope it is an Alkali Fixer. A couple of years ago, I sent him a private message suggesting that they should fill the gap in the UK market for Alkali fixers. The good old FX40 is no longer available ( can't undestand why ), and the Moersch offering is very expensive and doesn't at all behave like an Alkali fixer. Lets hope they make this available soon.
I can’t really tell the difference because I’m watching this video on my phone. I can only imagine being able to even recognize some differences if the images were printed and possibly blown up
I think when you *can* tell the difference, it's from the camera's limitations when it comes to focusing and composing. A semi-modern SLR is less psychologically rewarding to shoot but the results are indistinguishable from digital, assuming your negs are clean. I do enjoy the higher editing flexibility with digital if I end up shooting digital and film together.
Agree. Recently shot some E100 on a Nikon F5 and it looked completely digital to me. E100 is unique that way in its incredible accuracy of color rendition and acutance.

Just a general development question: I've recently started developing B&W, which is awesome, but one aspect that I can't find much information about online is the disposal of spent chemicals, particularly spent fixer. All I know is that I shouldn't pour it down the sink because of the silver. I'm based in London. Thanks!
Still think film is better especially E6. The bottom line is you still have the negative or slide shelf life is film will last 30+ years if stored properly. We’ve all lost digital files
I could repair some bellows light leaks with black silicone which I got from a car parts store. I don't know what this stuff is intended to be used for, but so far a tiny drop on each pinhole fixed it. An it is invisible. That is I cannot tell any longer where these damn pinholes have been. I don't know how long this repair will last. So far it's half a year now.
The depth of field not withstanding, it is very difficult to tell them apart on a small coputer screen. Nonetheless, I loved the photos. Persoanlly, I prefer to shoot film, but digital camera is also a great tool for photography so long as people do not buy into all that marketing malarky. Thanks, Rog.
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss They are indeed. It is more the processors that are getting more powerful, so they can process the raw data even faster and with ever increasing complicated algorithms. I like them, but with film I feel more in control of the whole process.
There are two expressions that drive me nuts, 'cos I can't see the difference, "Filmic" and "Cinematic" I can't see the difference in prints or videos! I get the processing that goes with film as I used to do my own. But visually, nope.
Cinematic in videos is usually complimented with added wide-screen bars top and bottom and much steady cam flowing movement. I've never heard of filmic
It will be more fair to close aperture on your medium format camera. Because fulllframe 28 1.7 is noooot the same as medium format. So I can tell what is what even just watching the DOF. But the 28 mm distorsion is different too. Medium format 50 mm isn’t like full frame 50mm. Etc etc. this comparison is not the comparison of film and digital, but the comparison of the formats. Take 28mm lens on 35mm film camera and compare it to leica q with 28mm. It will be fair. But this one no.
I have a Fuji x100f and I hate the thing to many buttons to many features. I much prefer my chinon cm4 or my mamiya m645.I've been tempted to sell it so many times but each time I'm your mad it's a fantastic camera. Has anyone else felt the same or is it just me?
I keep it simple on the mono. There are many features and I played with the menu for hours on end. Mostly I use the camera in manual mode with center weighted metering and single point focusing and keep it simple. When I feel lazy I'll put it in auto mode. All set up from the menu to my own preset. Fun camera
I like it a lot. Being monochrome the images are fantastic quality about 48mp. And the lens is awesome. I did wonder why not a fixed 35mm lens but I'd miss the 28mm. And being a fixed lens never going to get dust on the sensor 😂

I hate to admit it, but the Leica was very good. I didn't look it up, but I'm assuming that it was designed as a b&w? The reason I say that is, in my limited experience, digital cameras don't take true b&w, they just desaturate the color. Then you end up with blah looking greys. Kind of like having a thin negative. Oh well, this is nothing but the ravings of a lunatic, so take it for what it's worth.
B&W film will always be better in wet darkroom print.B&W digital will always be sterile without soul without grain without gorgeous tonality without gorgeous highlights without gorgeous skin tones.I have gorgeous very big darkroom prints from B&W.I don’t need billboard prints for the national road and I never crop.I don’t need 1000 photos every time I go shooting.I need only few real good photos.Always have the negative in my hands and keep my memories forever.

Indeed. Fairly obvious if you shoot a lot of medium format, the challenge is to get foreground to background all in focus when you need it!

I've used a 72mm 3 stop ND filter on mine before holding on with a rubber band! Ha ha. Worked

actually the Leica does not mimic B/W it has a monochrome sensor and can only shoot in black and white 😃👍🏻

I think when you *can* tell the difference, it's from the camera's limitations when it comes to focusing and composing.
A semi-modern SLR is less psychologically rewarding to shoot but the results are indistinguishable from digital, assuming your negs are clean. I do enjoy the higher editing flexibility with digital if I end up shooting digital and film together.
Agree. Recently shot some E100 on a Nikon F5 and it looked completely digital to me. E100 is unique that way in its incredible accuracy of color rendition and acutance.

Just a general development question: I've recently started developing B&W, which is awesome, but one aspect that I can't find much information about online is the disposal of spent chemicals, particularly spent fixer. All I know is that I shouldn't pour it down the sink because of the silver. I'm based in London. Thanks!

Still think film is better especially E6. The bottom line is you still have the negative or slide shelf life is film will last 30+ years if stored properly. We’ve all lost digital files

I could repair some bellows light leaks with black silicone which I got from a car parts store. I don't know what this stuff is intended to be used for, but so far a tiny drop on each pinhole fixed it. An it is invisible. That is I cannot tell any longer where these damn pinholes have been. I don't know how long this repair will last. So far it's half a year now.

The depth of field not withstanding, it is very difficult to tell them apart on a small coputer screen. Nonetheless, I loved the photos. Persoanlly, I prefer to shoot film, but digital camera is also a great tool for photography so long as people do not buy into all that marketing malarky. Thanks, Rog.

@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss They are indeed. It is more the processors that are getting more powerful, so they can process the raw data even faster and with ever increasing complicated algorithms. I like them, but with film I feel more in control of the whole process.
There are two expressions that drive me nuts, 'cos I can't see the difference, "Filmic" and "Cinematic" I can't see the difference in prints or videos! I get the processing that goes with film as I used to do my own. But visually, nope.
Cinematic in videos is usually complimented with added wide-screen bars top and bottom and much steady cam flowing movement. I've never heard of filmic

It will be more fair to close aperture on your medium format camera. Because fulllframe 28 1.7 is noooot the same as medium format. So I can tell what is what even just watching the DOF.
But the 28 mm distorsion is different too. Medium format 50 mm isn’t like full frame 50mm. Etc etc.
this comparison is not the comparison of film and digital, but the comparison of the formats.
Take 28mm lens on 35mm film camera and compare it to leica q with 28mm. It will be fair. But this one no.
I have a Fuji x100f and I hate the thing to many buttons to many features. I much prefer my chinon cm4 or my mamiya m645.I've been tempted to sell it so many times but each time I'm your mad it's a fantastic camera.
Has anyone else felt the same or is it just me?
I keep it simple on the mono. There are many features and I played with the menu for hours on end. Mostly I use the camera in manual mode with center weighted metering and single point focusing and keep it simple. When I feel lazy I'll put it in auto mode. All set up from the menu to my own preset. Fun camera

I like it a lot. Being monochrome the images are fantastic quality about 48mp. And the lens is awesome. I did wonder why not a fixed 35mm lens but I'd miss the 28mm. And being a fixed lens never going to get dust on the sensor 😂
You can buy an awful lot of hp5 for the price of that Mono camera.
And a fridge for it all 😂

I hate to admit it, but the Leica was very good. I didn't look it up, but I'm assuming that it was designed as a b&w?
The reason I say that is, in my limited experience, digital cameras don't take true b&w, they just desaturate the color. Then you end up with blah looking greys. Kind of like having a thin negative.
Oh well, this is nothing but the ravings of a lunatic, so take it for what it's worth.
Yeah it's mono. No colour filters in the way of the sensor so pure light and tones
..prefer the film character and bokeh back ground....I might have stopped down and used a longer expose on the Mamiya...for dof ...

B&W film will always be better in wet darkroom print.B&W digital will always be sterile without soul without grain without gorgeous tonality without gorgeous highlights without gorgeous skin tones.I have gorgeous very big darkroom prints from B&W.I don’t need billboard prints for the national road and I never crop.I don’t need 1000 photos every time I go shooting.I need only few real good photos.Always have the negative in my hands and keep my memories forever.
The bellows are fairly easy to replace - did my two folders myself. Got them cheap as their bellows were ratty..
The difference is about $40 every time I shoot
