Staying out of the cleaning, decluttering and tidying of Chad's space is a wonderful thing in my opinion for both of you. I believe everyone of reasonable age should have a space like this; not necessarily like a locked up No Tresspassing type deal, but just a small space that's just for you and your responsibility. It prevents a lot of those "hey where did you put that scrap of paper I was holding yesterday" conversations.

I prefer hard flooring, with some machine washable rugs in key places (like on the side of the bed, or in front of the sink, or when stepping out of the tub) and lots of washable mats near all doors to the outside. We have people with allergies to mold and pollen, and we also have a dog that sheds a lot, so carpeting or even large area rugs are just too much work for me.
Thank you for this (and all of your other) inspirational videos. My next (dreaded) task is cleaning my office. It is full of dust and lots of papers and has been a catch all for far too long. Trying the three way system today and if I don't finish (because there is so much stuff in here) I hope to finish tomorrow. : )

I cleaned a house for a professor ONCE. Their house was totally cluttered. I did my best but it took me hours and hours. It was so hard to work around the piles. I did clear a major clog from the shower. I started pulling a bit of hair and before I knew it, there was a HUGE wad coming up from the drain! The shower drained much faster after that. They never called me back but I did get other cleaning jobs after that with other professors so I don't think I did too bad. Haha!

I HATE carpets. We had them in the apartments we lived in for a few years in between homes, but now that we bought a condo, we only have hard floors and I love it! I also love Chad's office - that art work is definitely eclectic.

I love the feeling of soft carpets but I have 3 cats, and as anyone with pets knows, the hair gets EVERYWHERE. Plus, cats have a tendency of ... uhm, "getting rid of their hairballs". I used to have carpets too but now I have vinyl and find it so much easier to clean.

I'm only 4 minutes into this and I want to share it with my husband! He has a space where he does podcasts and has a cheese cave and untold other items. I ignore it. Just as I ignore his desk and workshop. If he can't de-clutter, I'm not going to clean it. It does drive me crazy to have such clutter and filth. Unfortunately, he is worming his way into a spare room and cluttering it up. I would love to create a beautiful space for a guestroom and a small corner for a sewing space for myself. But I fear, this is never going to happen. I love him to pieces, but he is a low-level hoarder and can't be bothered with cleaning or decluttering.

Hmm...Carpets. I am very mixed on this. Carpet feels nice. Especially soft ones. My aunt has that in her condo and it was something I wanted when I bought a house. My allergist said I should avoid them as much as possible because of dust and other allergens. The house I ended up buying this year has a lot of nice hardwood floors, with a carpet in the basement (I'll replace it with a softer carpet if/when the basement floods from rainwater leaking in and insurance pays for it) and better carpeting on the basement stairs. My bedrooms have a softer laminate floor that I initially thought I would replace with soft carpet after I've saved up some more money, but they're growing on me. The hardwood and laminate floors feel easier to clean, even with a vacuum and Bona mop. And I got custom-cut rugs for some places to protect my floors, so I kind of have a mix. But I really like my hardwood floors. They're dark so they don't show dust (I have a video from when I first got handed the keys that shows me learning that the hard way). Part of me still wants a nice soft carpet for the bedrooms and basement, but I can't afford it now.

I live in a house which is a mix of hard wood, tiled floors and carpets. Carpets are fine for lounges and (some) bedrooms but since I was a teen I have had hard wood floor in my room because I have a lot of hair. It always surprises me how much dust is in a vacuum canister after cleaning a room with carpet.

  • @justanotherjessica

I prefer carpets to hard flooring. I have always lived in places with wall to wall carpeting (except in kitchen and bathrooms) until I moved to my current apartment. I thought I'd love the hard flooring but I honestly hate it. The floors are slippery, I had to add a lot of soft furnishings to reduce echo in the rooms, the floors are cold, the floors are hard, etc. The only nice thing is that it's a lot easier to clean up a spill.
Carpets, on the other hand, are soft and comfy under foot, not slippery, reduce echoes, not cold, etc. Plus, if I was lazy on vacuuming for a few days, it wasn't immediately noticeable. If I am lazy on vacuuming here, you can tell immediately because there's a layer of dust and small bits of cat hair on the floor. Yes, I know that when I had carpets that stuff was *in* the carpet but at least a guest couldn't see it from a mile away lol.
