It's 2018 and I still feel the most wonderful nostalgia hearing this. Good old times: you only had to turn on the PS1 and play. No DLC, no profiles, no internet. Not that these things are bad, but I think they transformed gaming into something complicated. I just miss the simpleness of that age.
It's still really nice in 2023 :) If you know about electronic music producing a little, you should understand how awesome these artists have done 25 years ago. Analogue synthesizers, drum machines, hand played basslines, hardware samplers and vocal clips etc.
I never realised just how much effort Namco pit into the soundtrack for this game until now. I remember the Ridge Racer series having a good soundtrack but not this good. Just goes to show how much a good soundtrack is underappreciated when a kid.

No doubt the music was definitely part of what made it so special.

For you this might be garage talk, but for those who can feel my vibe, they understand these are the precious urban fragments of a time I wish to go back to like movin' in circles, but I guess I have to turn the page since I'm ready to roll. There is no epilogue now, there's just one more win!

Loved this soundtrack. It fits the game so perfectly and it is also nice to keep in the background if one is doing some activity. The last track that played during the final stage is still an earworm to this day, I remembered it clearly even before listening to it again here.

I loved the big change in the soundtrack from RR 1-2-3 the Techno is replaced by bitch relaxing, ambient / soul, soft pop/rock and it fits the game even better, but I really liked the techno of the first 3 installments too, RR is born with techno dance, dont we ever forget that A Shane this didnt came as an arcade
I know what you mean. The gabber Techno would work better now as we has faster pace, 60/120fps frame rates. I am not sure if it would blend well with normal racing games. Somthing crazy and radical would hit the spot.

There are a bunch of composers, the leading composer and sound director being Hiroshi Okubo. Kohta, a guitarist, composed the rock oriented tracks. I think you'll recognise them very easily: Urban Fragments, Naked Glow, Move Me... etc. He also composed music for Ace Combat 2, RR5 and some other Konami titles. Tetsukazu Nakanishi, best known for his work on the Ace Combat series, is known for his fast and Jungle/DnB influenced electronic music, so he only composed 2 tracks (Lucid Rhythms, Motor Species) for R4 since his style didn't fit in. His music in AC3 Electrosphere is especially superb, so I recommend you give it a listen. Linkage and Montage are by far my favourite! And lastly you have Asuka Sakai (who is by the way married to Keita Takahashi, the creator of Katamari Damacy!). She composed most of the jazzy and piano tracks like Garage Talk, Your Vibe, Silhouette Dance, Epilogue... the only exception is Quiet Curves, who is composed by Hiroshi Okubo, but the piano riff and solo is her work.
This game is a classic it will never be made again like this, or the music, or the cars, Ridge Racer 5 does not even come close to this, or 6, or 7, or 8
