Instead of just take all 4 cards given to you, choose one to pick and move the other 3 to the player on your left. You'll get 3 new cards (from the player on your right), choose one and move the rest to the left again. Continue until everyone had choosen 4 cards. We always played it like this and it really smoothes down the card gambling.
There are custom made player boards which fix the issue. But I agree those had to be in the base game box.
This game is so much better when you draft cards instead of just getting 4.
and the prelude and colonies expansions are must haves.

i noticed this. And i played the game a lot online, before i use my "physical" version. Plenty of stuff simply is not explained at all.

I like ares expedition is one of my favorite games, but the original still a good game
The steam version looks worse than the board game imo
