    I describe these four chords as "Happy, Spicy, Danger, Cool", but what are YOUR words for them?

    I've like the most when you said about those feelings
    C∆ happy
    C7 spicy
    Cm∆ danger
    Cm7 relaxing
    Is it possible for us here in the channel, to study this subject: the feelings in the chords?

    • @MusicTheoryForGuitar
      @MusicTheoryForGuitar  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Rafael. Yes, it's definitely possible for you to study the feeling of the chords. You can start by simply playing a chord, or a melody, and ask yourself "how would I describe this feeling?"

    • @OdaKa
      @OdaKa 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For me, Major7 always gives me a feeling of happysadness, or sadhappiness. It's not quite fully happy. Dom7 is always more happy to me, spicy is a good word for it. I call it moxie cuz it's got attitude hehe. I've never used mM7 as anything other than a passing chord going from regular minor to m7.

    6:50 It's worth mentioning that when you eliminate the 5th or any other non-essential degree of a chord in this way, you are playing what is known as a "shell voicing".

    In Jazz college, we were taught to master 5 different 7th chords using “drop 2” inversions.
    The 5 chords were: major 7, dominant 7, minor 7, minor 7b5 (half-diminished 7th chord), and diminished 7 (fully- diminished 7th chord).
    A drop-2 inversion is when you take the SECOND highest note in an inversion and drop it below the lowest.
    So 1-3-5-7 becomes 5-1-3-7
    3-5-7-1 becomes 7-3-5-1;
    5-7-1-3 becomes 1-5-7-3;
    and 7-1-3-5 becomes 3-7-1-5.
    Then we had to play those drop-2’s on 3 sets of 4 strings; so on 1-2-3-4, 2-3-4-5, and 3-4-5-6.
    We learned them that way because many 7th chords are too big of a stretch if played in close position inversions.

      Drop 3 chords follow the same principle by dropping the third highest note in the chord down an octave.

    • @MusicTheoryForGuitar

      Yes, the chord course works great for fingerpickers. You will have to mirror a few chord diagrams since you play left handed, though.

    So I want to ensure I understand. Basically a 7th is just using the 7th note in the major or minor? So Cmaj is made of C - D - E - F - G - A - B - C to play on guitar you use the 1st, 3rd, and 5th. A 7th is just adding the 7th which I’m this case is b. Is that essentially correct?

    Hello, very nice explanation. I am learning the banjo, but I assume this information transfers, just with different fingers.
    In the last example couldn't you move down the highest string 2 frets?
    Why choose not to and instead omit a note from the chord?

    Online I see that the chords (Tonic, Sub-Dominant, Dominant) of, say, the key of C are C, F and G. Likewise, for the relative minor, it's Am, Dm and Em.
    However, my book (Mel Bey's), says the chords are C, F, G7 and Am, Dm, E7.
    Why is there a difference?

    Can't you add the note G on the 3rd fret of the 6th string to C7 chord?

    • @MusicTheoryForGuitar
      @MusicTheoryForGuitar  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can, but this way you will have a C7 with a bass of G, which is a different inversion of the chord, and in some situation it will sound different.

    • @vacuumcarexpo
      @vacuumcarexpo 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@MusicTheoryForGuitar Thanks for your reply.
      Considering the 5th note is often omitted when a chord is used with some tension notes, the 5th note is not thought to be essential and it's probably better to use the chord as it is.

    You can put the 5 in the bass of C7 if you barre the third fret on the Low E or even muting the A string as thus muting the string and omitting the doubled root. The way the notes are stacked are irrelevant, it's only important that those four notes are played.

      you can always ask your melody what it needs more, if the melodic line is hitting a 5th over the chord already, maybe you want to harmonize the 5th and make it a little less tense, or maybe you want to add more flavor and not play the 5th in the chord its whatever flavor you want your dish to have i guess.
