Caught your vids a few weeks ago, you make sence man! Have tried various seed with limited success. Gonna give oats a shot this year. Your vids got me leaning that way and after talking to the guys at Whitetail Institute today I'm convinced!
I found Nate’s channel just about 2 years ago and took the oats recommendation. It has worked amazing! It’s not the only thing I plant but it really is the what deer around me prefer from the time it germinates up though almost all of the season. Snow and weather dependent of course. But it has really worked great for me!
@@maxwiesner1363 I’m going on year number 3 and it all depends on your soil. Oats however will grow in the bed of your truck so I would say you could get by with 5+ years.

Ive been running my moms hunting ranch for 4 years now. Having a real hard time bringing the deer in. 300 acres. I am in central Texas. Low fence with Axis.
I live in the desert in central New Mexico. My property was wrecked by the previous owner and was essentially a bare, highly compacted Adobe block. I’m using sorghum Sudan grass hybrid and a bunch of oats. The hybrid Sudan grass grows huge if fertilized and watered regularly. It’s drought resistant. It’s growing biomass that I can use to mulch the ground. But because it’s such big grass, it shades the soil nicely for a sub crop of oats. Both of them will help me bring my soil to life. This year I’m going Gonzo and planting sunflowers, pinto beans, pumpkins there as well. Diversity above the soil will feed the soil better. My biggest enemies are puncture vine stickers, tumbleweeds and Silver Nightshade, all 3 plants that move in on overly destroyed soil. I’m gonna do my best to remove them by hand and give them a bunch of competition for resources.
I really enjoy your videos and the way you involve your kids. Fellow WI hunter/landowner here. I am going with the WI Oats Plus this year in some of my plots. Hopefully they are as good for me as they seem to be for you.

Nate, what would you recommend for a first year ever plot in Southern Ohio for seed ? It will be a Fall plot & not in farm country. Roughly a 5-7 acre field & a 1.5 acre field in middle of woods. Have a tractor & disc
@@chrishopson863 In the smaller plot in the woods I would definitely give oats a try. They grow well in the shade and if your soil isn’t that great they will still thrive. You have a real big plot to work with sounds like. It’s a little late to plant soybeans or corn, I would definitely plant some clover and chicory. Also throw in some oats and you could try some purple top turnips with them as well. It’s hard to say without me seeing the property what would be best. You definitely can’t go wrong with what I listed though! Good luck!

I planted Buck forage oats last year with very good results. The oat seed was "stringy" and wouldn't feed very good in my spreader. Do the whitetail institute oats feed ok in your seed spreader?
@@Natesbowhunting thanks for the advice so regular oats that a farmer would plant would not be the ticket. So we have a lot of outdoor places in the town I live in. We have like three so I just have to request Whitetail Institute oats
@@Natesbowhunting and I have another question. I’m the one that uses fertilizer because the cost of money I’m a very low income person and I use a spring tooth. That’s about 4 feet wide 5 feet long and that works really well for tilling working everything up. I thought it was funny how you used your Urain vehicle pulling a more.

Do you think Oats and Radishes is the best combo? I planted Oats this year with a little bit of Winter Rye and everything has grown fantastic. BUT it does seem like it’s needs just a little more of something. What do you think? Turnips instead?
@@markst.martinii9635 I have tried radishes in my area and the deer do not care for them. Guys in my area have had success with turnips however I am going to throw a few purple top turnips in with the oats this year and share my results. 👍
Totally agree Nate Brassicas are great from February on but not hunting in Feb. here in S.E. Mn. I frost seeded clovers in March with minimal success. So my plan is try your recipe of winter oats winter wheat and winter rye combo into my clover plots but not until after last mowing which will be around labor day. Hopefully the clover really comes through the 2nd year. Pretty cool with the lawn mower and wheeler....the things we go through for a deer!! its AWSOME!!

Nate, always enjoy your videos. I'm in northcentral PA and have switched from rye to oats. Rye doesn't seem to come up in the fall, then it's 3 ft. high in the spring. Oats seem to prefer my soil and temps better than rye. Appreciate your work.
When are you planning on sowing your oats? My flooded corn plots and some of my beans now were weedy. Now the Rock River is finally receding I got in to spray it and I am going to put something in shortly. Beets radishes oats. Idk

I never considered oats until watching your videos. I've now bought a big bag of forage oats that im gonna plant this year. Wondering, how cold have you noticed your oats will stay green to? Thanks!
@@kdsberman It seems like they can handle temps in the 20s maybe even the teens for a little bit. Mine were green right up until January here in southern Wisconsin!
Nate GREAT POINTS, as per your comments we will be planting them in a couple of weeks. We are going to mix some in with our other food plots, and over seed some in with the clover, alfalfa, and chicory to freshen them up a little. We will let you know how they do. Interesting. I’ve been a rye guy and they love it here in western Il but I always heard oats die in the cold? What are you doing the following year if they are living through winter?

Looks like fun! I plant oats rye and brassicas in northern Wisconsin nate., the deer up here eat all of them but for sure up here the rye and brassicas keep feeding long after the oats die off.

Do they come back in the spring? I have been planting a rye crimson clover combo with great success. Both come back vigorously early in spring at a time when deer really need the nutrition. I also like brassicas for the winter nutrition. I definitely like to plant a lot of diversity but if I could only plant one thing it would be rye. Do you know what the protein level is in the oats? Want to add that to the buffet!
I am going to do half acre in cereal rye and the other half in oats, I'm in north east Wisconsin and the soil sits at about 5.7ph. I did lime the fields, so once I get the seed down, Ill put a camera up and watch through the fall. I have taken a break from harvesting deer, I am more focused on making quality habitat for them. Looks like you are going to plant without a herbicide treatment? Will they oats outcompete the grass? I have a plot in northcentral MN which I havn't done anything with since last year and wont get up there til last week of August. Going to try oats but mix in a little cereal rye for how north and late in the year it is.
@@jasonmeyer4587 In that plot in the video I am spraying before I plant with glyphosate. Otherwise I just till it up and the oats will outcompete grasses being planted that late in the year. Good luck.🦌

@@kdsberman I do not know what setting I am at…I just set it until they come out pretty heavy and it works for me! I use a Earthway spreader and very happy with it. Seems like the thicker the better for oats!
Oats has been the secret weapon on our property for years. In areas of high deer densities, most brassicas can’t hold up to the browsing pressure like grains. Mix in rape like Hunter or Pasja that regrows very well and you’ll be good

I am gona do some oats this yr. I like mixing them in with wheat and rye. Never tried just straight oats. And the brassicas i planted the deer hammer them from sept all the way into late season and winter

@@meat-gardener I have never had any issues with the oats I plant. You are not the first person to mention that with the buck forage oats!
Winter Rye and Oats combo has worked great for me. Winter Rye does better the colder it gets. I also will mix Crimson Clover in about 20%

Ya I will let the spray do its job and lightly till end of next week. It should make like another edge with that and the standing good corn

Ever over seed the oats over the brassica in September to get the best of both? Done this for years and works out great for me in SW Wisconsin.

What is the name of the oats? Can I just go to any seed place for farmers and buy just regular oats or does it have to be a Whitetail oats?

Oats will die out over winter. Winter wheat is the way to go for spring green up early

I’d love to plant brassicas but my soil is pretty bad in my plot, think I may do a strip of brassicas down the middle with oats everywhere else 👌🏼

You may be seeing the triticale instead of the oats in that mix you're planting surviving that late. Triticale is a cross between rye and wheat.

In my limited experience the oats die off in Oct in my area of northern NY. I gets cold up here!
