Yup. Should have won the Oscar. It's so thrilling to see a live performance with an orchestra to this soundtrack. Well, I know it's not live..... but whatever. I always get chills whenever it hits that violin solo for Romantic Flight, as well as the Test Drive theme. UGH. I just love everything to do with How to Train Your Dragon. But the music is seriously the best part
Being a French Horn player, I don't think I ever have, or ever will be, more jealous of a band in my life. I want to play this soundtrack so flippin' bad.
One of the few soundtracks for which I know nearly every beat and note. My favorite soundtrack of all time. Nearly perfection as its intended form. How it didn't win the Oscar is a travesty.
Linda Harms Could be, but not likely, as all the 'bell-like instruments' are presented on stage. I think they left it out because there already was a slow and soft theme included. Although personally I regret they didn't include it, I suspect the arrangement already sounded "full".
GOSH! THIS IS SO AWESOME!!!!!! I wish I could go to one of these concerts... HTTYD OST is so amazing!!! And live!!! I actually cried on the Romantic Flight part... my hair stood on end in every note in See You Tomorrow and Test Drive... Gosh, loved this so much.
I love animations for numerous reasons. One of them would have to be the soundtrack. How to train your dragon is simply a masterpiecie. Not only in this regard, but also because of the story and overall idea.
Such a beautiful rendition of Romantic Flight! With the singing violin and then the whole orchestra...man. I almost cried.. and felt like I was flying at the same time. heh.
Incredible performance! One of my favorite scores of all-time. But have recently fallen in love with the score for HTTYD2. Possibly my favorite movie soundtrack ever. To answer your question @Chris Edgecombe, it lost out to the fucking Social Network. How that score won over Powell's work will be an enigma to me for all eternity.
Did this seriously lose its oscar to that facebook movie? No one will remember the Social Network 10 years from now, but this is already a classic that many of us will probably show our kids some day.
Actually they probably have an editor behind the booth fading the different scenes in and out manually. Did you notice how the opening scene started from a freeze frame? It's much easier for a good AV technician to transition scenes to good music than it is to conduct music to good editing ;)
Jordan Yee All conductors know tempos by heart (ish). It is a crucial ability as a conductor and there is most likely NOT any fades done by an "editor". xD
NamelessMaker katherine and i weren't talking about tempo in the musical sense. we're talking about the conductor's ability to keep the music in time with the video editing. trust me, it makes for a better production to have the av peeps keep the footage in time with the music rather than force the musicians to match the rigidity of pre-recorded footage. i've tried doing both. ;)
It's the conductors job to match the tempo of the orchestra with whatever tempo which is in the score. And the score was made to the video or vice versa or together. How do you think they score for films? Tempo and time marks everywhere which they then memorize. Filmcomposing at its core. (though when recording then they have clicks and headphones)
How could this soundtrack not win the oscar... still bothers me a bit. I get chills every time I listen to it!
I come from the future... It still bloody hasn't after 3 amazing films that are some of the best music I've ever heard
John Powell was robbed for sure. One of my favorite original film scores of the last 20 years.
Thanks Guys..you are the best!
One of the most beautiful things I have ever heard. Love everything to do with HTTYD. John Powell is a genius! WHY did this not win an Oscar!?!?
+Van D Beats me.... at least it did great at the Annie's...
Such an utterly magnificent soundtrack. "Test Flight" could be the best superhero theme ever written.
+Maher Gomez Yes.
John Williams “Superman” is my fav, but this is close!!!
Yup. Should have won the Oscar.

Romantic flight is just the best part
One of the few soundtracks for which I know nearly every beat and note.
My favorite soundtrack of all time.
Nearly perfection as its intended form. How it didn't win the Oscar is a travesty.
I agree. It's also my favorite score hands-down, and perhaps one of the bigger Oscar snubs I can remember.
i love the violin solo :)
Amazing..... I love "How to Train Your Dragon" so much
ugh... I never want this to stop... the chills thru the entire video... :'(
same
Love, love, love this. Especially the two musicians (bottom center) at 0:42 sneaking a look back at the film behind them.
This would be perfect if only some of Forbidden Friendship was included. I wonder if it was left out because of the bell-like instruments used in it?
Linda Harms Could be, but not likely, as all the 'bell-like instruments' are presented on stage. I think they left it out because there already was a slow and soft theme included. Although personally I regret they didn't include it, I suspect the arrangement already sounded "full".
very good

1:59, I like it in a higher key than the studio recording. I love this whole suite, I wish the group I'm in could handle it.
And that's how it should be performed!
BEST...SCORE...EVERRRRRRRRRRR
I love it.自分の言語ですみません。動画をたどっていて、この曲を知りました。アニメの曲なんですね?すごくいい曲で、好きです。何度も聞いてしまいます。ありがとうございます。

Why isn't this gala released on blu-ray?
1:59 When you win a girl's heart once and for all
Wow wee
If u have a very very very big orchestra, with like 120 strings they sometimes have 1 sax in it.
I wonder how much practice it took for the conductor to be able to conduct to the video. That isn't easy.
Actually they probably have an editor behind the booth fading the different scenes in and out manually. Did you notice how the opening scene started from a freeze frame? It's much easier for a good AV technician to transition scenes to good music than it is to conduct music to good editing ;)
Ah, that might be.
