Sunday Longplay - Zelda 2: Resurrection of Ganon (NES ROM Hack)

This week on Sunday Longplay, it's another ROM hack for one of my favorite NES games of all time. Welcome to Zelda 2: Resurrection of Ganon!
This hack feels like an unofficial direct sequel to The Adventure of Link. The world map is the same, the palaces and caves are mostly the same, but the atmosphere and the order of action in the gameplay is completely different.
To start, darkness has fallen over Hyrule with Ganon’s resurrection, and the color palettes and the music have been changed to reflect this. The setting is also underscored by the towns being deserted and boarded up except for the houses where you learn spells and sword techniques. Many of the frustrations from Zelda 2 have also been alleviated in this hack. Shorter grinds, less required magic use, etc.
The maps of the overworld and the palaces may be the same, but what really makes this hack feel like a direct sequel to The Adventure of Link is that all the bosses are already dead and the crystals already set in the statues. However, the boss rooms of each palace are the only places where you can find Magic Containers to extend your magic meter, so you’ll still need to go through them again. However, you cannot go through them in the same order you did in The Adventure of Link, because the key items have been rearranged!
There is also a seventh palace to go through before the Great Palace, which I have never seen another Zelda 2 hack do before but I love it. The North Palace which serves as the starting point in The Adventure of Link becomes an extra dungeon in this hack!
Some of the puzzles in this game really make you think outside the box, and many of the things you did to get through the original Zelda 2 won’t work a second time. For example, how do you get through Death Mountain when the first cave is blocked off by a wall too high to jump over with an item on it that you need to get the Jump spell? Also, how do you get to the Island Palace when the cave passage you normally took to get there has now caved in after a storm? Also, where is the flute needed to get past the spider guarding the Valley of Death? Is there another palace I’m missing? These are all questions you will be asking yourself while playing this game, even if you have played the original Zelda 2 to death like I have.
Overall conclusion: Zelda 2: Resurrection of Ganon improves upon many aspects of The Adventure of Link and makes a familiar environment feel brand-new again. Highly recommended for any Zelda 2 fan!

I love the atmosphere of this game. It's like everyone is either dead or in hiding
Personally, I feel Zelda II is the best Zelda entry. And this hack looks AMAZING. I cannot wait to play it!

Thank you for uploading this! My mind is blown at how amazing this game is. Far from a lazy or amusing hack (and I love both), this really looks like something new
I'm almost 40 and couldn't play something like that with the patience that I used to have, family and all, but I love watching it. I remember crying to my mom over the summer in the 2nd grade for her to get me this. She didn't. But a friend's brother happened to have it and he let me have it since he moved on to the Sega. I played it obsessively. My mom tried to make me attend an event. I cried and she left me alone at the house so I could keep playing it over the weekend. Just an amazing game!!!
Definitely one of my favorite NES games. I remember as a kid my old original-model NES started to malfunction, struggling to play certain games, but Zelda 2 just would not play at all. The game would keep restarting at the title screen endlessly. Then we replaced it with the toploader model, and it ran again perfectly!

Yeah, this hack did a great job with its custom soundtrack. Amida's Curse has a pretty good OST too.
That's why we shouldn't kill Ganon without a Weapon that's able to seal his spirit

Wow.. I like how it looks like it maintains orginal game play. Music is sick. Im going to play this and try to bodyslam it lol. I love the original.
Yeah, this game almost feels like an unofficial direct sequel to the original Zelda 2. Same world map, but new puzzles on a different route through the game.
So Link left the front door open and forgot where he got all of his loot, so he put it back in strange places. I like the idea of changing landscape and crumbling palaces. Not a bad hack, but those multi-page dialogue boxes were painfully slow.
A minor annoyance, but it's not as bad as some of the longer multi-page dialogue from Journey of a Day (another great hack overall).
@@MetalSmasherGaming ...the waiting for the text to wipe out was the unecessary part. But I atill enjoyed watching. The game world is so good for caaual replay...especially after downthrust!

Subscribed the moment I saw this. Zelda 2 despite being just not really that good compared to other zeldas, is I think, the most in need of a skillful full remake. Excellent taste, my dude, seriously.
You know, I wonder why Nintendo never thought about remaking this game or even making another Zelda game in the same style with the side-scrolling combat scenes.
@@MetalSmasherGaming I'm not sure, have you ever heard of Astynax, Faxanadu, Wizards and Warriors, or Battle of Olympus? They use similar side scrolling combat scenes to this, but their travel systems are very different.
With the release of the remasters ghosts n goblins, I would love to see a Wizards and Warriors remaster. A full remake or sequel for Zelda 2 is probably never going to happen.
@@TheGavrael A remake of zelda 2 has been a private dream of mine for some time, and something I'd be willing to put significant effort towards, albeit I lack the programming skills. To me Wizards and Warriors is one of the most iconic and ground breaking video games of it's time, and it's another remaster I'd be willing to devote significant time and effort to do.

The version I'm playing has extra doors and is missing the key at the top of the stairs right after the blue knight. Midoro Palace is completely broken in v1.2

Just like Simon Belmont did with Dracula in Castlevania 2. Also, that’s actually Kaepora Gaebora the annoying owl from Ocarina of Time, but looking back at his sprite from this hack, it kind of does look like Stimpy now that you mention it.
By any chance, did you see what looks like the Goron Ruby in Death Mountain? I can't find any info on it, it's under the lone Mountain block in the maze, and you can't seem to get to the ruby, maybe just an Easter Egg?
great job , i like the fat fairy in the basement is she inspired by any movie character? and is that a snake basket at the beginning of each town? and it would have been funny to see a close up of zelda's face at the end right before she is about to go down on link, and her eyes turn red and you hear gannon's laugh
Those things at the beginning of each town are gossip stones like the ones in Ocarina of Time that you can talk to while wearing the Mask of Truth.
@@MetalSmasherGaming i also like that you have to become a fairy to get into the last palace. how would i know to go the the sleeping zelda area to find another palace, when you first go over it you appear in the throne room, is there a clue in the game to make you go over it again to reveal the last palace?
@@futuramayeah I had never seen another Zelda 2 hack add a seventh palace to go to before the Great Palace before, but that was a great touch. Reminds me of how the Temple of Time from Ocarina of Time became its own full dungeon in Twilight Princess. I'm not sure if there's a character that gives you a hint, but there is a subtle hint when you exit the starting screen. When the map pops up, instead of starting on the palace tile you start on the tile next to it. That's the only clue I could find. Kind of clever if you ask me.

There are some buggy behaviors, but overall I feel it's a good hack.
wait, ganon is thunderbird, and you have to ressurect him with the spell, just to kill him again?

Do you remember which Enemies are normally invisible if you don’t have the Cross?
I believe it's just the blue and purple Moas in eastern Hyrule that you need the cross to see.
Thids is how zelda 2 should have been back in 1987......you should have been fighting Ganon at the end....not your shadow....good job!! 👍👍👍👍

The text boxes suck
Looks cool but the music isn't all that inspiring
I wasn't sure how to feel about the new music, but the game is supposed to have a darker atmosphere, which the new music in my opinion does a good job of underscoring. Then again, the original game's music was just so good.
@@MetalSmasherGaming I'm not liking the music for the side scrolling battles and the dungeon music. The town music is meh as well. But I like the world map music.
