He did it because if he sent someone else, it'd be refuted. That's why Fomin & Co refuted Legasov. They had higher rank, and in Soviet the rank is everything. So when Boris, which has a higher rank, questions Fomin they can't say anything. Because rank.
i am from Gomel (Belarus), wich was the second city that should have been evacuated after Pripyat, but it didn't happen. This "show" is a masterpiece and it made me cry so many times...even the reactions on it.
don't listen to haters, this is super weird how people get like very offended on behalf of people living in that place, when we, the actual people, don't mind at all. xD
Erik rewatch the shows version of it, you can see the rotors hit the crane and the hook fall. The reason it hit the crane was attributed to the smoke and possible radiation sickness
The entire evacuation announcement, in English. “Attention, attention! For the attention of the residents of Pripyat! The City Council informs you that due to the accident at Chernobyl Power Station in the city of Pripyat the radioactive conditions in the vicinity are deteriorating. The Communist Party, its officials and the armed forces are taking necessary steps to combat this. Nevertheless, with the view to keep people as safe and healthy as possible, the children being top priority, we need to temporarily evacuate the citizens in the nearest towns of Kiev region. For these reasons, starting from 27 April 1986 2 pm each apartment block will be able to have a bus at its disposal, supervised by the police and the city officials. It is highly advisable to take your documents, some vital personal belongings and a certain amount of food, just in case, with you. The senior executives of public and industrial facilities of the city has decided on the list of employees needed to stay in Pripyat to maintain these facilities in a good working order. All the houses will be guarded by the police during the evacuation period. Comrades, leaving your residences temporarily please make sure you have turned off the lights, electrical equipment and water and shut the windows. Please keep calm and orderly in the process of this short-term evacuation.” - Evacuation announcement in Pripyat, 27 April 1986
I was recently watching a documentary where some guy went to the most radioactive places in the world like Hiroshima, Alamogordo, and of course, Chernobyl and they were in that same hospital and found those firefighter uniforms and they were STILL HIGHLY RADIOACTIVE after 30 some years. I had just watched the Chernobyl mini-series and that blew my mind. Those were some highly courageous but criminally uninformed comrades that died to cover up the Soviet blunders.
@@krashd There is radioactivity EVERYWHERE on earth, the planet itself is radioactive, the sun that warms you up is radiation, the very food that you eat is radioactive. In light of those facts, your comment doesn't make much sense.
Greetings from Russia! I like your honest reactions very much. It's a pity that they really didn't make English subtitles for the alert like it was in the 1st episode. The creators included real recordings and materials and we, Russians can say that it is very carefully well-constructed picture of Soviet life, I mean cars, buildings, clothes, all these small gadgets. It's amazing! Thanks for watching and reaction. Sorry for mistakes. I'm looking forward to see you watching another episodes :)
I am loving that we are getting real views of that time in Russia. No propaganda bull from either the east or west. I hope this starts a good trend, I can image there are many stories that can be told while staying true to how Soviet life was.
@@MrTech226, unfortunately yes, I disapprove it strongly because it's far fron truth. My friends agree with me. HBO series is quite good in terms of facts about what happened, even our Liquidators say it's mostly true. But, well, all we have in our television is this nonsense. Such a waste.

It's absolutely riveting stuff. I've never searched for reaction videos for a show before, but with Chernobyl it's great to see others agreeing with the concerns that the show deals with. Thank's for the video.
I'M IN CHARGE HERE! One of your top generals just reported to you that your reactor is putting out 15000 roentgen. With all due respect Boris I think the reactor is in charge.
Short story from one of my friends, who lived through these events (I was born later): After word got out about the catastrophe in Hungary, where I live, government warned the population not to eat any vegetables, that could have been effected by radioactive dust. And so the price of such products fall dramatically, close to being free. Despite the warning, for weeks in some schools and kindergartens they served everything with lettuce, as it was cheap. Luckily we weren't too close to the events, still, it makes me stunned how irresponsible people can be
When the attack on Pearl Harbor happened and America entered World War ll, an American officer sat down with his wife and wrote her a code for the letters he would write to her so she knew where he was during his overseas combat. “Dearest” was Guadalcanal, “My Love” was Saipan, “My Darling” was Iwo Jima, etc. I immediately thought of that in their coded phone call in the beginning of the episode.
The firemen’s uniforms that were hastily dumped in the hospital basement are still there..in surprisingly good condition. A filmmaker went to take footage of them and take readings.
Its not deadly but its better to not spent big amount of time and especially dont touch these clothes still people are dumb someone stolen helmet from that basement i watched videos from 2009-2014 helmet was there in post 2015 videos helmet is not here

@@chrisf5828 If I remember correctly, they did not die in the show either. They got out of there and there was no more information about them, except the text at the end.
@@Tangalunga They were not shown dead in the show. We don't attend their funnerals. The show even admits the truth in some text at the end of episode 5. But the characters in the show did die as presented by the show. The show announced it as flat fact they would die shortly after the mission and never revisited the matter (except in end notes). The show made every effort to *deceive* the audience on that point. They even made up a scene of Legasov asking permission from Gorbechev himself to kill the three men. The intention was for the audience to believe the mission was not survivable and to believe that the men died after the mission. We know this was intentional because we know the writer knew the true story.
I think, what I love the most in these reactions, is everything between the two of them; that Sonny has the perfect reaction of all of us on the ground. He really connects with how we would feel, not knowing, not expecting, not imagining what this could mean. But still asking, what is this crap, what is actually happening, and shouldn't we be wearing gloves! He has such practicality. And that Kat has the technical and scientific background (I don't know from where, but it is clear). She has the pure, what the F moments, based completely in the realistic science of what is happening. She is the unfettered scientist on the scene. It really is a perfect combination, for this series. I can only say two things: first, of course you two are not silly, for your comments to this atrocity. We all process these things through various means. Second: please Kat, explain nucleics and radiation to Sonny, and the rest of us. Because this shit is scary.
Patrick Sheridan Thank you for your kindness 🙏🏻 My expertise in radioactivity is quite limited, since I am a biochemist, but maybe I can explain the basics!
Guys I highly recommend the Chernobyl podcast from Hbo. It integrates perfectly the episodes, it explains them and it expands them because there's the creator of the series speaking. Great channel, can't wait to see your next reactions!
The helicopter scene at 9:05 first I also reacted like "Sh*t that rediation fried the electronics...". At a rewatch I saw that the blades hit the steal cable of the crane ... which makes it not less frightening because the helicopter crashed because the pilot didn't saw the cable because they where completly surrounded by radioactiv smoke and dust ...
FYI - Explanation of what the two scientific ladies on the phone are talking about: 1. They are speaking in code about the situation in Chernobyl, because phones in Communist countries are wiretapped 24/7 without warrant. No guesses what happens if they're caught saying something besides the official story of the Chernobyl situation. 2. "Our 'friend' - the one in the 'country' " - The 'friend' of course is the nuclear reactor and the 'country' is the USSR. 3. "It's extremely hot" - "hot" is a general nuclear term referring to elevated levels of radiation. Obviously, the situation there is very "hot". 4. "But his nephews are flying down and they always bring cool weather" - referring to the helicopters coming down to try and put out the fire 5. "Oh which nephews?" - "what are they trying to use to cool the reactor?" 6. "Simka, who's 15 and little Boris who's 5" - Look at the first two letters of each name. Si and Bo. Silicon and Boron. The 'ages' of the 'nephews' refers to their number on the periodic table (which is why the camera briefly focuses on that). This refers to the borosilicate material being poured on the burning reactor. 7. "Though children can make you hotter when they're pouring all over you." - the stuff they're slathering on the reactor could potentially INCREASE the temperature/nuclear fission, at least temporarily. 8. "Maybe I should visit" - "maybe I should come and help these idiots before they make things worse."
Great reactions. Your faces during the whole episode... kinda entertaining :D Of course the series took some creative liberties to tell the story, but lots of it is surprisingly acurate. Lots of the creative choices are explained in their excellent podcast for every episode. For example the role of Legasov and Shcherbina in handling the crisis is exaggerated to give the show a better focus and Emily Watson's character is one of the few fictional characters in the series (a stand in for a whole bunch of scientists who helped with the crisis). But what is really haunting, are all the details in the series taken directly from reality. For example the corridor in the hospital and the room where they dropped the firemen's clothing looks like in reality. You still can go down there and see the pile of clothing (and it is still one of the most radioactive places in the city). The 3 guys going into the water at the end are also real, including the fact, that their lights go dark. I would suggest not to google names from the show before you finished it, because reality could spoil future episodes.
Natural radiation level is 10-30/1000000 roentgens per hour. There it was 15×1000 roentgens per hour, back in that days. You'll receive a 100% lethal dose in 144 seconds at this level of radiation (Just for info).
i really appreciate you reacting to this. HBO is still the OG for the Golden Age of television. From The Sopranos and on they've been ahead of the curve.
this series is absolutely brilliant. the acting, amazing. we finished the season last night. looking forward to your reactions..the intensity is throughout. thoroughly intense, horrific, insane, heart wrenching, mystifying and more! Stellan's character gets even better...and of course the performances of Jared Harris and Emily Watson are stellar!! See u soon!!!
The loudspeakers were playing "Attention! Attention"(внимание! внимание/ vnimaniye! vnimaniye) ...also the helicopter fell because the steel cables that were hanging from one of the cranes were too close, and the rotor got caught in it... the OST is great, it really sets up the mood of the show, Evacuation, Door and The Bridge of Death is probably best from the soundtrack...
20:15 I have no idea how much you guys want to know about soviet society but there is this book "The Revolution Betrayed: What is the USSR and Where is it Going?" that was written in 1936 by Leon Trotsky one of the leaders of the October Revolution who was exiled by Stalin. In it he describes the bureaucratic takeover and a sociological overview of the country as well as giving an accurate prediction of its' collapse. I won't lie it's a bit technical and has a communist bias but it is very good if you're interested in soviet history/general sociology.

So, dynamics said that people will temporary move from Chernobyl because of some radiation risk in the air and word "Vnimanie" is really means "Attention". The 1980's was one heck of a decade. Chernobyl disaster, Space Shuttle Explodes, Mount st Helen erupts, Exxon Valdez major oil spill , Berlin Wall Torn down. AND a little television show transforms a sleepy drug cartel infested city into the Monaco of the United States.. Miami Vice.
i would argue that the 80s was on the quiet actually a more defining decade of the post ww2 era than the 1960's, the 60s gets all the attention for its flower power hippies and Vietnam, but naam was relatively localized as an american thing and flower power didn't really change all that much or last all that long, the events of the 80s totally changed the path we were heading down towards the future.

@@xevious2501 I agree but in a way thats life, we all start out idealistic, but life beats you down. One of the little talked about prices of freedom is the freedom to be a selfish dick, and in a world where such people exhist the level of mutual trust in each others good faith to make a utopia is impossible, and you can only fight an impossibility so long befor you become so bitter you become the problem, And that's the cycle. Humanity evolved from a world of inequality, we are products of it, as such it is in our nature. Benjamin Disraeli wrote alot about this as a counter to Karl Marx, in which he argued mankind will always default to class structures, and he seems right, if you look at any attempt to change that they only replace what defines your position, wealth, genetics e.t.c is replaced with party rank and ideological purity, but a class heirachy remains. And any hierarchical structure as Benjamin points out is nauraly predetory from the top on the bottom. Benjamin agreed this was bad but inevitable so we need to find ways to bend the structure to work for the good of common man over constantly trying and failing to break it. The 60s Generation started with the idea of freedom, liberty and equality all hand in hand, but they lost to the inevitable default of humanity, but instead of trying to make it at least work for some good they gave up and joined in on the path of exploitation where there for fathers left off.
It really is so tragic, a whole town there complete for workers and their families and then...people still suffering to this day. It is a wonder how nature overcomes..
The helicopter actually crashed months after the accident. It hit a crane that wasn't even near the reactor. It's all made for dramatic effect, but excellent episode nontheless.
I love how the scene with Boris and the guys trying to play down the incident revealed that he had in fact been paying attention to what Legasov had told him. Boris was brusque and dismissive at times, but he always paid attention and remembered. He was also a career bureaucrat, and knew very well when people were giving him BS.
at 9:08, it's not the radiation that makes the chopper crash. the rotor blade hit the cable from the crane near the building. a crash like this happened about 6 months after the explosion.
That heli rotors hit a steel cable, that's why it crashed. But the pilot was really feeling ill due to the radiation in reality too. And sorry if i seemed a bit harsh on my comments on your guys last reaction, i liked both of them ...
I know this is an old video of yours but I just discovered this reaction (I just watched the series last week) and am really loving your videos. I love how you love Skellan Skarsgaard! Me, too! He is incredible in this series (he's always incredible!). I am sad that your intro had to address rude comments; you don't deserve that at all. I'm happy that it didn't discourage you, and that you continued your channel!
9:05 i also thought that this helicopter was destroyed by radiation. in fact the propellers collided with the crane's cable and we can see how the hook falls . accurate with the real accident
Just a note about the helicopter... It didn’t crash because of the radiation, but because it hit a cable line on the nearby crane. You can see the rotor blades hit just before it goes down.
Yea, but radiation and contamination are two different things. Contamination is the radioactive dirt, dust and debris, and gloves will keep that from getting on or in your body where it can continue to put out radiation long after you've left the area, and affect other people.
Guys, go look at some real Chernobyl videos like that helicopter or the rooftop cleaning. It's haunting to look at but it's amazing how accurate they made the show.
@@DonFatherTrump The crash incident actually happened, though not the very first chopper through. Testing the (hard, carbon-rich, hinthint) steel they found out it had become brittle like gypsum. Forgot the exact explaination but I do know there's a tiny difference between the strongest steel and useless slag (juuuuuust enough bend to not snap) and the neutron beam made that balance go kaput. By the point this happens, human beings are cooked though.
I just saw episode five and went to look for some reactions on TH-cam, I'm really happy I found your channel! I subbed right away and I'm really looking forward to the coming videos! Oh, and I agree with what at least one other comment said; I'd love to watch your reaction to Hannibal after this show! Mads Mikkelsen is the GOAT Hannibal Lector. All the best to you both from a fellow Københavner!
There are areas in Belarus where are people of 40 years old and up are dying from different forms of cancer right now. It is all related to Chernobyl disaster. Soviet Union did great job of covering up this catastrophe.
I was suprised and delighted when David Dencik showed up! This show is so brilliantly written, acted, and filmed, and it is horrifying to know that this was the reality for actual people!
He was always smart and listening as shown by how he remembered uranium reaction as bullets and how he used Legasov's explanation of how a nuclear reactor works when he questioned Fomin. But Shcherbina's evolution really started when he was confronted with his own mortality in the hotel - "we'll be dead in 5 years", that really shook him up and Skarsgard's acting in showing that change was just superb from that point on.
I can understand that this TV show might feel absurd for people living in the West - but this is how life looked like behind the iron curtain - no logic.

I like that even in the moments where you're just listening to the dialogue, you guys looked stressed! SAME. 😂What a stressful show!

Please keep calm and orderly in the process of this short-term evacuation.”
- Evacuation announcement in Pripyat, 27 April 1986
I was recently watching a documentary where some guy went to the most radioactive places in the world like Hiroshima, Alamogordo, and of course, Chernobyl and they were in that same hospital and found those firefighter uniforms and they were STILL HIGHLY RADIOACTIVE after 30 some years. I had just watched the Chernobyl mini-series and that blew my mind. Those were some highly courageous but criminally uninformed comrades that died to cover up the Soviet blunders.
Hiroshima? There's no radiation there anymore, two million people live there.
@@krashd
There is radioactivity EVERYWHERE on earth, the planet itself is radioactive, the sun that warms you up is radiation, the very food that you eat is radioactive.
Gott, did you know that Russian Government supposedly doing their series based Chernobyl and blaming CIA
@@MrTech226, unfortunately yes, I disapprove it strongly because it's far fron truth. My friends agree with me. HBO series is quite good in terms of facts about what happened, even our Liquidators say it's mostly true. But, well, all we have in our television is this nonsense. Such a waste.
@@Gott777777 True, here in this country, Three Mile Island accident in March 1979 was partial meltdown. It was caused like Chernobyl - faulty equipment. As Chernobyl was Rated 7 on the International Nuclear Event while TMI was a 5. Most that I am very sad is False Propaganda by the government that led to deaths of possible millions. I think as you probably agree this practice still continues today.

I forced both of my roomies to watch the first episode with me the other day and I wish I'd recorded their reactions as well. This show dives into you deep, and manifests like an ulcer on your brain. It's absolutely riveting stuff.
I've never searched for reaction videos for a show before, but with Chernobyl it's great to see others agreeing with the concerns that the show deals with. Thank's for the video.
Fun fact: Those 3 men survived and two are still alive actually.
Dude i know that its real events and all. But spoilers dude, i only saw the first 2 eps and now i know theyll survive.
@@Ancientumoto
They don't ever come up again in the show. I have spoiled nothing of importance
Actually 2 of them are alive today, but I think neither the third one died from radiation.
kian Duivenbooden lol he meant like in real life
Kristóf Szabó yeah the one who died did so 20 years later. All 3 were properly treated.
I'M IN CHARGE HERE!
One of your top generals just reported to you that your reactor is putting out 15000 roentgen. With all due respect Boris I think the reactor is in charge.
Short story from one of my friends, who lived through these events (I was born later):
After word got out about the catastrophe in Hungary, where I live, government warned the population not to eat any vegetables, that could have been effected by radioactive dust.
Love your GOT reactions and glad you guys are doing Chernobyl.
HBO did a great job and your channel is great. Greetings from Brazil!
The firemen’s uniforms that were hastily dumped in the hospital basement are still there..in surprisingly good condition.
A filmmaker went to take footage of them and take readings.
and still incredibly radioactive too
th-cam.com/video/tItVL70NsQI/w-d-xo.html
Just incredible. That footage give me goosebumps.
All area is sterile due to radiation, no one touch them, insects and animals avoid highly contaminated places, so...
Fun fact: the firefighter's clothes are still in that hospital basement to this day and are still emitting deadly levels of radiation.
th-cam.com/video/C4g3FkXUhx0/w-d-xo.html
Its not deadly but its better to not spent big amount of time and especially dont touch these clothes still people are dumb someone stolen helmet from that basement i watched videos from 2009-2014 helmet was there in post 2015 videos helmet is not here
Yes...they find that out later in the series, but thanks for spoiling it for them.
Yeah, that sounds "fun".
Don’t explain yourselves, you just keep on reacting! Hurry up and watch the rest of the series. The rest of the episodes are just as intense and powerful.
Mathew Woodard episode 3 is downright haunting.
Fun fact, two of the three guys that got into that basement to pump the water are still alive today, and the one that died passed away in 2005 I believe, not sure the exact date, but he died in this millenium.
you just spoiled it for them. they still haven't seen the episode 3
@@NextBatterUp I guess... But lying about them making out of there is one of those lies that is completely pointless so... Don't really see a reason to think they are lying about that, especially now
The weird thing is they mislead the audience, then correct the record in a line of text at the very end of the series as if that fixes everything
Patrick Sheridan
Thank you for your kindness 🙏🏻
My expertise in radioactivity is quite limited, since I am a biochemist, but maybe I can explain the basics!
But, it still doesn'n makes any difference. Pilots and whole crew burned alive((((((
FYI - Explanation of what the two scientific ladies on the phone are talking about:
4. "But his nephews are flying down and they always bring cool weather" - referring to the helicopters coming down to try and put out the fire
5. "Oh which nephews?" - "what are they trying to use to cool the reactor?"
Very true. Also, the three divers all survived. Two of them are still alive today! (Although it has been widely reported that they died)
Speakers:"Attention! Attention!"
Natural radiation level is 10-30/1000000 roentgens per hour. There it was 15×1000 roentgens per hour, back in that days. You'll receive a 100% lethal dose in 144 seconds at this level of radiation (Just for info).
its scary... event o think about it. every view seconds under such condition and your lifeexpectation is slashed in half...
i really appreciate you reacting to this.

Greetings from Russia 🇷🇺

And yeah, as we all understand, "temporary" was nothing like this. Sad thing, all of this really happend. People did not bring anything much important with them, just clothes and documents. Nobody knew they will never return to their home.
Sorry for my english.

@@BadgerGirl 60's though rightly so an amazing decade it erks me to think that so much of todays problems is due to that very generation of young people who for the first time ventured past the stigma's and constraints layed down by generations prior. the 60's generation is the one that shouldve taken us into a utopia, but instead they continued on like their parents instilling the same hate arrogance ignorance racisms onto their kids. Todays issues would not be if the 60's generations didnt loose themselves as adults. Who do you think was our current and past presidents? the 60's generation. who shaped our government to the dog chasing its tail system we have today. 60's generation, who screwed up our economy chasing wealth and the 1 percent.. the 60's generation. Yeah we got great music from that generation but when all was said and done, and they got into the white house, and our banks and financial institutions, they sold the US out for greed. WHo ran our banks? wall st. main street? 60 generation. go ahead, name some names.. and what youl find are all those of the 60's generation. now that said..

I love how the scene with Boris and the guys trying to play down the incident revealed that he had in fact been paying attention to what Legasov had told him. Boris was brusque and dismissive at times, but he always paid attention and remembered. He was also a career bureaucrat, and knew very well when people were giving him BS.

That heli rotors hit a steel cable, that's why it crashed. But the pilot was really feeling ill due to the radiation in reality too. And sorry if i seemed a bit harsh on my comments on your guys last reaction, i liked both of them ...

radiation don't care about gloves.
Yea, but radiation and contamination are two different things. Contamination is the radioactive dirt, dust and debris, and gloves will keep that from getting on or in your body where it can continue to put out radiation long after you've left the area, and affect other people.
Great reaction! I hope you do more TV shows after you finish this!

@@DonFatherTrump Choppers that fly over the Chernobyl neutron beam actually have their steel calcify.
@@JoshSweetvale I've never heard anything like that.
@@DonFatherTrump The crash incident actually happened, though not the very first chopper through. Testing the (hard, carbon-rich, hinthint) steel they found out it had become brittle like gypsum. By the point this happens, human beings are cooked though.
I just saw episode five and went to look for some reactions on TH-cam, I'm really happy I found your channel! 7:03, the moment when you realized that Boris might have been an asshole, but he was also the exactly right person for the job.
There are areas in Belarus where are people of 40 years old and up are dying from different forms of cancer right now. It is all related to Chernobyl disaster. Soviet Union did great job of covering up this catastrophe.
"They should be wearing gloves." Can all but guarantee they had no access to sufficient protection.
I was suprised and delighted when David Dencik showed up! This show is so brilliantly written, acted, and filmed, and it is horrifying to know that this was the reality for actual people!
Love your reactions! Greetings from your neighbor Germany :p
Y'all just received a new subscriber. Glad to join you guys! By the way that lady is freaking beautiful dude hang on to her and never let go.
I think he genuinely believed the party's statement that there wasn't a big problem and things were under control.
If not for the 3 divers who went in - 3/4 of Europe today would be an irradiated wasteland.
The most interesting thing in this situation is that 2 of them are still alive and the third died in 2005 being 65 years old.
"900 million people used to live here.. now it's a ghost town."
I can understand that this TV show might feel absurd for people living in the West - but this is how life looked like behind the iron curtain - no logic.
'Get as far from Minsk as you can' is good advice in any situation.
