Fujifilm has made stunning cameras in the APS-C format, so, there is no reason why Nikon cannot do the same or even chuck in a few more “bells and whistles”. Digital noise is not the problem that it used to be so the requirement for full frame sensors is not so immediate. In fact, I think a lineup of really high performance APS-C cameras may very well be more profitable than formerly perceived. There comes a price point at which many people interested in photographic gear are going to say, “very nice but no!”. An APS-C “Z9 equivalent” at about $4500 USD may in fact give huge economies of scale with strong demand.
Beyond doubt a Z APSc pro level body is overdue to replace the D500... Whether it's named as Z80 or Z90 waits to be seen... In all probability Nikon will release a 35/45 MP sensor APSc Z body calling it Z80. At the same time Nikon will also release a Z9h upgrade with 24/26MP FX sensor with Global Shutter...
