    My first CCD was a D70s and I loved it. Much later, even after taking a step into the mirrorless realm, I bought a D200 and it blew my mind how beautiful the color rendering is from first golden hour to second golden hour. When lights are really low I can't recommend the usage of it, but put some good glass on it and shoot it at all other times, it is still a great experience, even today.

      i had exactly the same experience, started with a D70 (which I still have) and on to a D200 which I love. Ive just taken it out of the camera cupboard cleaned it up and treated the camera to a Nikon F1.4 50mm AI lense....its like falling in love all over again
      I’ve also gone hi tech about bought a used (very good condition) D7500 which I’m having lots of fun learning how to use properly…..wonder what I’ll get myself on my 76th birthday next year

    I bought my "new" D200 two weeks ago, with only 7k clicks, and I "hate" it! Since I bought it, I can't put it down. It seems glued to my hand, and all my other cameras are collecting dust (Nikon D750, Z5, Fujifilm X-T3, X-T30 and X-E3). There's just that special something about this camera. It makes me happy. It's like I don't need any other camera (at least for my personal photography).

      Found one with 4k clicks beginning of the year, now at 17k and me oh my I just started printing. My other cameras also haven't seen the sun quite as much, they simply do not compare. The day it gets errors is the day I take it to the forest and old yeller it. Then buy another.
      I feel the same way about the little rx100va, my perfect pocket must have. I was going to shoot it once it died after years of dropping dents, lcd falling off, more dents, and even running it over going 60mph with a snow machine trying to get a glorious 1000fps shot. That lens probably retracted in about 1/500th of a second into packed snow. After a good smacking it still turned on and worked fine. The photos are better in every way spec-wise compared to the D200, but it stays in my pocket more. Might just convert it to infrared and check it out.

    I had one back in Jan 2006. I bought it new from a shop in Manchester UK, who just happened to have one as there was a waiting list for the camera. It cost me £1600.00 which was then about $2400.00. I sold it a few years ago for £250.00 incluidng the grip. Last week I bought a used one for £85.00 . It has less than 8000 actuations, but it was made in Thailand. My original D200 and I am sure that my D300 were made in Japan. Along with my original D70, they are a lot of fun to use. The ergonomics are typical Nikon, meaning first class.

      @@Mr50mmish I ended up getting a mint D200 for $50, because of this video! What an absolute bargain. In my preliminary assessment it handles and feels ergonomically just like a Nikon D700. You can tell the D700 was clearly inspired by the D200's controls. However, the image quality leaves something to be desired, particularly ISO noise performance. The oddest part of the D200 was its color modes.
    For traveling, I prefer the plastic D80. With the same CCD, but lighter, cheaper, & uses the more available/less vulnerable SD instead of CF.
    Correction @13:40: the D80 can use D lenses. D40/60 cannot.

    • @Mr50mmish
      @Mr50mmish  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Ah I forgot the D80 had the motor built in. But still overall if you ever use manual glass the D200 meters that so I still think it's worth the weight offset. At least for me it is, but then again I do my photo walks with medium format so weight hasn't really ever bothered me. And SD to CF adapters are pretty robust so no issue with finding storage for the D200, just a bit more upfront cost.

    • @Fotznerwin27
      @Fotznerwin27 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Not exactly the same sensor but surely veeeeery similar. Sony ICX-493 for the D80 and Sony ICX-483 for the D200.
      Owning both cameras I can confirm the D80 to be the more delightful body for travelling due to its weight advantage. But nothing beats the satisfying shutter sound of the D200, not even the D700.

      How does the 5D compare to the D200, in terms of "joy to use" and image quality? I recently bought my D200, and I love it, and I'm really itching to get a 5D Classic. A friend owns one - maybe I can get him to sell it to me, since he hasn't used it in years.

    • @Mr50mmish
      @Mr50mmish  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@raduionut78 for joy to use I honestly think the D200 wins. The more confident AF system and the manual glass metering really clinched it for me, plus general ergonomics of the D200 I personally like more. The 5D for me wins in overall IQ though, but the AF system really did kind of bug me, even though the centre point was always my go to, but that might be also the glass I kept using on it. For the longest time I didn't have any AF lenses for Nikon faster than 1.8 where I have had my canon 50mm 1.2 forever. The 5D classic tho has a nearly perfectly simple menu system that I really enjoyed. Overall I do like the D200 more but I think I will sooner or later get another 5DC and have a second look at that.

    I don't use mine very often, but for what I'd get selling it, I plan to keep it. It was my main camera from 2013 (paid $350 for it) until 2019, when I got an EM5. It was just getting too heavy to haul around for hours on end. But from time to time I take it for an outing. Most recently, I used it-with my old SB24-to shoot my and my wife's new passport pics. I'd place it high on the list for folks on super tight budgets. A body for $100 and an MF Nikkor 35mm for for $80, and you're good to go. I'd get the 35 rather than 50, because you'll end up at 52.5mm. I don't think at 75mm equivalent is a good place to start. You can also find the old 24-50 AF for $50 to $100; not a great lens, but good for most purposes.

    Great review. Heard lots of good things about this model but I can’t see myself getting one for the simple fact that it’s too big and heavy. I like that it has a pop up flash and I do already have a 50mm F1.8 lens fitted on a Nikon N60 35mm film camera. I am tempted to try a D200 but would rather save up for something else. A D80 might be a better move in my playbook but I do appreciate your video, however. Pictures look good quality!

      Yeah the D80 is a good alternative if you don't plan to use manual focus glass since you get a pretty substantial weight savings!

    I bought my Nikon D200 within months of its release to replace an F2 and an F2S, both of which needed their shutter mechanisms rebuilt. I shot with the D200 until the end of 2011 when the sensor screen got several spots on it that showed up in almost every image.
    Recently, I had the sensor screen professionally cleaned, and I'm once again shooting with the D200. In the intervening years, I forgot almost everything I knew about the camera. So it's a learning process for me.
    The one modification I made to the camera was to add a double battery attachment so I could shoot longer without changing batteries. It makes the camera heavier, but the D200 was never a lightweight, point-and-shoot device. The only other modification I wish to make is to get a better viewing aperture. The stock one is simply too small in my opinion.
    I appreciate your video about the D200. It's very helpful.
    Best wishes.

      That's great you still have your original D200! I'm glad it's still clicking! Hopefully you can pick up a sensor cleaning kit next time, it's not too bad to go on your own! Ah I got the battery grip as well, but I just don't tend to use it much I do find the single battery tends to be enough for most of my shooting!

    • @JohnDrewVoice
      @JohnDrewVoice 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Mr50mmish The cleaning only cost $35, but I'll likely buy a cleaning kit. There are lots of Nikon lenses available for the D200.
      I have the dual battery setup because I used to work for the National Outdoor Leadership School, and there were times when I'd literally be in the wilderness of Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho for days without the ability to charge batteries. I always set out on excursions with six charged batteries.

    how do you think it compares against the 5d classic or against the S5 pro?

    • @Mr50mmish
      @Mr50mmish  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hmm for the D200 ergonomically I think it wins against the 5Dc and the S5 pro. The 5Dc controls are fairly good mind you, especially for someone that has used canon in the past, but the D200 kind of feels like the controls are just a bit better thought out and layed out. The S5 having an identical layout is also good but I personally was annoyed at the UI (menus and what not) and general slowness of some things on the camera (mind you the last time I shot the S5 pro was maybe 10 years ago)
      For Images. I'm kind of more happy using the 5Dc than the D200 or S5. But I think this is also a bit bias, for a really long time I only shot canon and I normally shoot full frame and I have a pretty reasonable selection of EF lenses. More so than Nikon F mount.
      That said when it comes to wanting to shoot older CCDs the D200 climbs to the top of the list. I do tend to pick it up much more than other CCD APS-C cameras and I do choose it over my S3.

    With respect you are missing the point about CCD sensors. The image is more "organic" than the CMOS and produces images that don't look "Plastic and Digital" PLUS Black and White is FAR better than ANY CMOS sensor!!

    • @Mr50mmish
      @Mr50mmish  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Meh I intentionally didn't talk about that since there are a lot of reviewers who already talk about it in that light. Additionally while I do like CCD output I don't really think CMOS output look bad, I definitely don't think they look plastic/digital atleast not anymore in the early days with specifically jpeg output I would say that was truer, as a lot of jpeg engines of ole just smoothed out noise and detail, but it's better now. . As for B/W that is also arguable as that more likely is impacted by the Bayer filter array (or lack there of in some cameras) and the file baking rather than sensor type.
