  • Named for 15 miles of colorful sandstone cliffs, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore follows 42 miles of the Lake Superior shoreline in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, stretching from Munising to Grand Marais and encompassing picturesque rock formations, waterfalls, and massive sand dunes dropping right to the crystal clear water. We'll explore the National Lakeshore from end to end in this episode of Grand Adventure, including hiking to Chapel Beach, and from our campsite at Country Village RV Park in Ishpeming we'll also touch upon the area's rich iron mining history, and Ishpeming's title of the birthplace of skiing in America.

    ABOUT US
    Welcome to Grand Adventure, a TH-cam channel that focuses on RV-centric outdoor activities including not only of course camping, but also mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, skiing and more, always filmed in stunning 4K.
    We're based in Salt Lake City, Utah, and invite you to come along as we travel all around the western U.S. My wife Patricia and I, and dog Zoe are avid boondockers, so you'll seldom find us in RV parks or even dry campgrounds. Instead, we're usually camped in some of the most remote and beautiful spots that you could ever pull a travel trailer into. And unlike most other RV channels on TH-cam, we're not RV dealers or full-timers -- we're "long-timers" who tend to hit the road for weeks or months at a time, while maintaining a sticks-and-bricks home in Utah.
    We'll provide beautiful travel videos, as well as some tips and insight on trip planning, and equipping and maintaining your RV to make your next adventure a grand one indeed! So, subscribe to make sure that you catch every episode, and remember...life is nothing but a Grand Adventure!

    I so want to visit the UP since seeing your great videos. Lake Superior is beautiful- at least what we have seen from the Canada side. That beach looks perfect- especially the "warmer" part haha. Wow. The first lakeshore national park. That's impressive. The colors at Miner's castle are very inviting. Miner's beach is a bit crowded for my tastes, but still nice. I love hikes through the woods. Chapel Falls is an awesome waterfall. Man, you saw it all here. OOOh That chapel rock is a must see., Your travels are making my must see list longer than Larry would like haha The color of the water and how clear it is worth the hike for sure. Dunes 275' ? Love your stories about history of the area. A chute that catches fire? Nice little campground. I do miss full hookups. I think I have seen the Nordic Sky Club signs in Ontario? So much is missed during these times- so many museums closed here as well or limited hours. Another great video. I definitely would visit that area. Stay safe. Alice

    I have been going to PRNL for 30+ years and I've never seen folks on the rocks at Miner's Castle. That's crazy! Of course, when lots of people start showing up on the lakeshore, I usually head inland to the forests. It looks crazy busy in your video. It wasn't that crowded when we were there in June. Ishpeming is pretty far from Pictured Rocks. There are some great RV campgrounds in the Christmas/Au Train area which much closer and a KOA east of Munising that is nice. I know it has been hard to find campsites this summer. The pandemic has allot more folks enjoying backpacking, camping and RVing.

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup, our campground was about an hour from PRNL. We actually did that by choice for access to the Ski Hall (which we thought as open, but wasn't) and also because we were coming from Door County heading northwest to L'Anse and needed a spot for just two nights. Pulling the trailer northeast to Munising would've been out of the way for us, and after our axle issues in Door County I wanted to minimize the pull to check everything out.

      Khatoon, we love that you've been coming along! We don't misunderstand at all. Again, you've been doing your homework! And all of our states have weird laws that no one enforces and no one bothered to cancel, like that haircut law you're citing.

    These have been great I really want to get up to the UP. During this pandemic and the explosion of new rv’ers have you experienced difficulties finding places to overnight? I seen you’re running into many closed places.

      Glad you're enjoying these episodes, Timothy. We've really had no issues, but then again we're not used to making reservations at all as this is our first summer staying in campgrounds. We're usually boondocking out west. We're typically booking only a couple of weeks in advance, but we've encountered some issues at times in more popular areas when the campground we prefer is full.

    Is there any boondocking in the UP ???

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes within the National Forests. However, we didn't want to count on it as the forests are incredibly thick, and you'd need to find spots that others have essentially already carved out. Between that and the need for cell signal to work, which is noticeably absent in many areas of the National Forest on the UP, we opted for campgrounds this trip.
      If you check the MVUMs for the various National Forests on the UP (Superior, Ottawa, Hiawatha, etc.) you'll see which Forest Roads are designated as legal for dispersed camping.

    sorry but the title “american heartland tour” should be Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma...Not the Dakotas, Michigan, Tennessee. Just my humble opinion. Missouri I could see as a heartland state I guess. Your videos are always excellent and I enjoy them greatly...just nitpicking the title of the series. Sorry, native Kansan and our state has excellent rving opportunities.....wait maybe I should shut up!

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Appreciate your thoughts, Brian! Well, we did start out in Nebraska. 😎 When we thought up the title, our perspective (admittedly our own) is anywhere in middle America between the Rockies and the Allegheny Mountain chain, what many coastal types think of as "flyover country." Obviously, others may differ from our interpretation. 😉 Our interpretation is further flavored by the facts that a) we never ventured east of the Rockies with the RV before, and b) we knew in this COVID area we weren't going as far as the East Coast. So for us it seemed to fit. And don't worry, we'll be hitting (more of) Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas & Oklahoma in subsequent seasons. We don't like revisiting areas too quickly, so we're always on the hunt for new things to explore.

      LOL! They can't all be 30 minutes, Terry -- we pump out a video each week and we both work full-time, too. Even a 15-hour video takes about 15 hours to produce, so a 30-minute video means that we're working 70 hours total that week. And we need to get out to explore, and also to move to our next locale, with a finite number of hours in a week. But we promise you a 25-minute episode next week from the Keweenaw Peninsula.
