The villagers really know how to make costumes. It is was like Mardi Gras, Carnaval and Halloween all rolled into one. Happy New Year.

Ukrainians in Canada celebrate Malanka but it usually just involves singing, no dressing up. So glad you showed us how it is celebrated in the traditional way. Many thanks.

Malanka reminds me of a Czech tradition called MASOPUST (MARDI GRAS).
To this day, the most common and oldest Masopust masks include the bear, klibna (horse), masopust, old woman with a litter, laufr, Jew or Turk, typical Masopust masks also include the governor, chimney sweep, policeman, bride and groom, death, gypsy, ras, jester and many more many other.

What a great vlog you put together Tania! And sharing this old tradition was awesome (both to see and learn about)!
I could be wrong, but did someone get a new camera for Christmas ?! 🎄Everything looked really great, and I like your dream sweater/jumper too! As an aviation enthusiast I really hope that with the spare parts (fuselage and wings) Maria will be rebuilt… ✈️
It’s a bit hard to say because I know times are not easy, but I still hope you and all of your family had as best a Christmas and New Years as you could have!!
Also, congrats on your first 1k subscribers! Take care and be safe! 🙏🇺🇦✌️💙💛

0 :31 : Russia has always seemed like a mirror-image of the USA to me; nothing ~should~ be different , but the mirror scowls back at me when I smile and everything is backwards (except the driving). It has always seemed this way - before and after 1991.

From the looks of it, Malanka seems similar to proto-Viking and early Germanic forest customs. There could a good Phd paper or book in its story, if you became a writer Tania. :)

haha, you never know, maybe someday😀 Perhaps the history of Malanka really has its roots in many other cultures.

Very good. Is your dog a Shiba Inu? It would be cool if you could go to the next NAFO 69th Sniffing Brigade event in 26th January. Shiba is a NAFO mascot. Their youtube channel shows what kind of truck handout events they are.

Malanka is not a Ukrainian-core tradition, it is a Romanian tradition. It was not "forgotten" because of Soviets; it was just recently discovered by Ukrainians in the former Romanian lands of Bucovina (and nearby regions where Vlach/Romanian influence is high). In present-day Ukraine, it seems to be met only in territories that were grabbed by USSR from Romania in 1940. In Romania you can witness Malanka (under this name or with variations) all over the country. In North Bucovina there are a lot of Ukrainian villages which used to be Romanian. Ukrainization occured thru both colonization and acculturation, but people preserved their old rituals even where they changed their language.
Being a Romanian cultural phenomenon, of course it is also met in the Republic of Moldova (where 80% are ethnic Romanians).
At 2:16 one can hear Romanian language chants.
Well, I guess such mutual influences are only normal. Cheers!

Malanka is a very old pre-Christian tradition that existed in Ukraine and Romania for a long time. Of course, cultures could mix and that is very interesting. Malanka was celebrated in many regions of Ukraine, not only in Bukovyna.
During the Soviet era, people who made Malanka (and other traditional celebrations) on the territory of Ukraine were sent into exile for 10-15 years. Therefore, the soviets actually "helped" very much to forget about this tradition. Currently, the most authentic celebration is left in the village on the border with Romania, so you can hear Romanian on the video.

@@ionbrad6753 in the villages in the Carpathians (Ivano-Frankivsk), Vinnytsia, Odesa, Ternopil regions. that's interesting that celebrations of Malanka a bit differ in each region (in some villages it ends with bathing in the river brrrr 🥶)

Being an Indian we have sympathy towards Ukraine and it's people's but we have some questions ----
Ukraine supported Pakistan in Indo-pak war with weapons even after Indian concerns
Ukraine supported Pakistan wholeheartedly in UN voting against India
Ukraine made fun of our goddess kali in a derogatory manner and posted on social media
Ukrainian minister mocked India and it's people's
Ukraine supported Pakistan on Kashmir cause which is integral part of India
But on the other hand Russia stood with us even defend us when US and it's dog's were about to attacked a democratic nation (India)
Russia supported us in UN never intervene in
    Kashmir cause....
So after all this historical shit why should India support Ukrainian? I'm sorry if i hurt any of your sentiments but our concerns are real

    • @TaniaKovba
      @TaniaKovba  ปีที่แล้ว

I am not an expert in geopolitics and unfortunately I did not know the details of the Pakistan-India conflict. But a lot of the things you mention sound like Russian propaganda - as I've never seen any jokes here in Ukraine about India and Ukrainian diplomacy never uses the hate speech (send me links if you saw otherwise). We have now and had before the war lots people and students from India all around Ukraine and we respect everyone. As I know Ukraine has friendly relations with India and always supports international rules and norms. I don’t ask you to support Ukraine I just make conclusion from your message that you support russia - that means you support invasion, murders, torture, raping, children kidnapping and vandalism
