Great video. I can strongly relate to this. I’m an apple fanboy who’s deep in their eco system but the Apple Watch just mimics the iPhone. I didn’t buy the ultra, instead I bought the Garmin Instinct 2 solar and I love it!
That's why I never got myself fully into their ecosystem. I tried everything they make but at different times. Hate their iphones too restricted os no file system, no settings for camera app in the app, etc hate ipados for same reasons. Their macs are great but too expensive for the hardware especially the screens.
Thanks for watching and your comments. My channel is only small and not a big following but I love making the videos. So I’ll carry on regardless 😂. Agreed, I was expecting more from the navigation side but the battery was expected. I could cope with carrying a charging solution if everything else worked as I’d hoped. Thanks again. 👍
I have the Garmin Fenix 6X Pro and the original Apple Ultra Watch. I am only a day hiker. I use Workoutdoors app (small one time fee) and download offline maps and the Ultra watch works well. Garmin always wins on battery life and preloaded maps. The Apple Ultra is my daily driver as it has the cellular calls, etc. It all depends on your application as to which watch you will use.
Totally agree. The Apple Watch is a much better everyday device and already miss some of its features but too much of a sacrifice for my occasional adventures. I can’t justify owning both. Maybe if my channel was better and more successful, I could afford both 🤣🤣🤣. Thanks for the comments. 🙏👍
I really want to like the Ultra, but I've been a die-hard Garmin user since 2006. I've had their watches/devices save my bacon while out in the back country several times. I literally trust them with my life. Not sure I could do that with the Ultra. Currently using an Epix (gen2) Pro 47mm and love it. :)
This is such a fantastic video. I also am so deep into the Apple eco-system, everything I own is Apple except for my watch, I recently upgraded to the Garmin EpixPro 51mm from the 6XPro and couldn't be happier, love the Amoled screen and I get 20 plus day on a charge with hour long gps runs 3-5 days a week. One of the things most people knock The Ultra for is battery life, for this video battery life is the least of things to be concerned about. This just shows how far behind and how far Apple has to go. I was really hoping for something big in the Ultra2 and was going to give it a shot. Well, I can honestly say the Apple watch Ultra has a really long way to go before it can truly be called Ultra. Thanks for a great video and for making it through those conditions.
Good video and thanks for sharing your experience. However, I don't think that Apple Maps should ever be used to navigate off the beaten path. It is good for urban centers, but as soon as you go on any trail it becomes useless - on the phone as well. Are there no other apps that you could have loaded onto your AWU to help you navigate while hiking? Would be great to see a comparison
Hi, there possibly is but I wanted to compare the ‘out of the box’ native apps. I had a quick look for other apps before I set off but they were chargeable additions. If I looked a bit harder and did some research I may have found something. As the battery life on the watch and phone weren’t up to more than a days hiking, it isn’t for me. The watch has already been returned and for now I’m sticking with my old Garmin. The AWU is a great piece of kit and beats the Garmin hands down for day to day functionality, it was just too much of a compromise for my needs out in the wild. Thanks for watching and commenting. 👍
Workoutdoors is a massive game changer for me, it would also be worth it if they charged 100 dollars for the app. If you count out battery life and some extra training plan advices, it brings a full Garmin to your AWU - with more customization options and a better smart phone connection.
I am using app called Footpath which is quite good in terrain. But it is not free and it is absolute shame and corporate greed to not support free offline topographic maps on watch which supposed to be outdoor tool.
Casual use when you are sitting down with plenty of time - Apple watch When you are engaging in specific activities and want to look into specific info quick and easy - Garmin watch
Thanks for video …returned my Ultra 2 yesterday …didn’t like it at all (Apple fan as well) this video only highlighted one of the main drawbacks of it 👍
Trying to fiddle around with an Apple touchscreen in the wind and rain looks like a nightmare. Irrespective of the availability better third party offline apps for Apple, the robustness of the Garmin and the use of buttons rather than screen gives it the win. Looks simple; does the job
It’s pretty obvious Garmin have been in the Mountaineering & Hyking game longer than Apple have, judging by this and many similar videos I’ve seen. Hopefully Apple will be able to address the shortcomings in future watchOS Updates and models.
Great video. If you had used the Garmin for the entire hike it should always have an navigate back to start option or if you make the start a saved waypoint it can get you there. Just trying to be helpful. One other feature you inadvertently highlighted on the Garmin is the ability to give you an elevation profile. I didn't have my watch with me once and inadvertently led my teens on a hiking path that was only quarter mile longer but didn't realize it doubled the elevation to 3400ft gained vs 1700ft gained. This is important stuff to know when you are out there hiking.
I really enjoyed your video, I do a lot of mountain biking, hiking, running camping and overlanding. I went from a Garmin Instinct Tactical to the Apple Watch ultra. My hope was that it would replace the need for a Garmin watch (I still usually bring my phone and a Garmin Inreach Mini) and let me tell you, the AWU was such a disappointment for when I have no service in the mountains of Colorado and trying to navigate. I tried other apps like "Work Outdoors" but was annoyed about new additional monthly subscriptions. Well, not long ago I bought the Garmin Epix Pro 51mm and yes the AWU is a better "smart watch" for sure for everyday tasks but I will never rely sole on AWU when I'm off-grid, Garmin all the way.
I wish other commenters had such an honest opinion of the AWU2. I agree entirely with your points. Thank you so much for watching and commenting. 👍. Safe hiking.
Your video saved my hard earned money! I really want a replacement for my Garmin Venu SQ that replaced my Garmin Fenix 3HR. Watching reviews over reviews these past week and 2 things really bothered me...Battery life and Navigation. Sure they might able to fixed the Navigation issue by software update but they will not able to escape the Battery Life Issue. Thanks for sharing this real world scenario video!
I love all my watches, but in town I absolutely love my AWU 1 and 2 and when I am out in the woods hunting or anything camping off grid is my Garmin 965 but I still carry my AWU I wear one on either wrist people look at me funny sometimes, but I really don't care. cool video but battery life has never bothered me on the AWU 1 or 2 I always have a way to charge not like a battery bank weights 50 lbs. or nothing but folks act like they just can't carry a way to charge anything IMHO that is rediculous.
Totally agree with you. Charging isn’t a big issue except when you’re wearing it 🤣. The AWU is a far more impressive piece of kit for everyday life, hands down. I’m not in a financial position to be able own both. I was going to sell the Garmin to soften the blow of buying the AWU2, but it just wasn’t right for my needs. Thanks for commenting 👍
Watching this was eye-opening and very instructive. If you're looking for an out-of-the-box solution, the AWU clearly isn't it! However, I would love to see a followup video where you test the AWU using apps like WorkOutDoors, Footpath, etc. to see if they can bridge the gap. I appreciate your conviction that additional purchases or subscriptions should not be necessary. However, let's acknowledge that Apple users are accustomed to investing in apps that maximize the functionality of their Apple products. Your stance may inadvertently dismiss a substantial portion of the audience. For a significant number of us, having a versatile, all-in-one smartwatch that is also good enough for hiking/trekking is the ultimate goal. In these scenarios, the convenience of using a third-party app along with a small backup charger can be preferable to shelling out $1000 for a specialized Garmin device that serves only one purpose. Give it some thought!
Hi Ryan, thanks for the comments. I’m certainly not disagreeing with your points about how versatile the AWU2 is day to day but the latest Garmin range that cost similar money to the AWU2 isn’t just a navigator. It’s definitely more geared towards health, fitness and travel but they have moved on considerably and will do a lot of things more. Again, if you’re a casual camper/hiker, the AWU2 is sufficient for most especially with the addition of 3rd party app but I would rather trust my old Garmin than Apple’s nearest and newest equivalent for the scenario I found myself in. I’ve returned the AWU2 now so I won’t be able to do any follow ups 😩. Thanks for taking the time for watching and commenting. All feedback (within reason 🤣) is welcomed. Take care.
@amateurexplorer809 I appreciate your reply. If I were in an extreme situation such as yours, I would definitely want the Garmin on my wrist! Admittedly, I am more of a casual hiker. I totally get that it's more of a headache researching other apps and such, and it shouldn't be necessary. Considering the marketing, the AWU should be able to do what the Garmin did without needing outside apps. Still, if you ever get an AW3/4 or whatever in the future, I would still be interested in seeing if any 3rd party apps could help bridge the gap in more extreme situations. We all use apps with our iPhones to get the most out of them, so I think it would be informative and realistic to make them part of the equation as well. I also think such a video would get a lot of eyeballs considering the number of Apple users out there 😉. Regardless, your video was very helpful in showing how utterly useless the AWU is out of the box and certainly cuts through Apple's marketing bologna. I actually sent Apple feedback with a link to your video as something they can learn from! Just my 2 cents, hopefully within reason! Once again, great video.
Hi Bryan, it’s pretty much a great watch for everything else (except battery life) just not for off the beaten track navigation . I trust my Garmin kit with my life, literally. Thanks for watching and commenting. 👍

As pointed out by other viewers, there may be 3rd party apps available for mapping but my other concern is its reliance on being connected to an iPhone for functionality. The Apple Watch would suit most people and I’m not a hater in anyway, just no good for me. Thanks for viewing and commenting, much appreciated 🙏👌👍. Garmin for me 🙌.

The Garmin, unlike the APU, is built specially for this function and does not have dozens of other background processes running simultaneously, or a backlit, color, tft screen. They are similar products with similar features. One was designed for that specific task, while the other performs that task as part of a suite of functions and capabilities. Hi, which part is contradictory? I stated in the video that the AWU2 can work on its own without the phones connection. The Garmin doesn’t just work as a navigator, it has smart watch features, download music to it and listen on Bluetooth headphones, use it to pay for your groceries (Garmin Pay), workout instructor, sun and moon phases, camera remote, sea tides calculator,I use the ballistic calculator for when I’m rifle shooting etc etc. so yes, there are different. That’s why I did a comparison. If they were the same, why would I do a comparison video? The point of the video was to make people aware of both watch’s abilities in the situation and environment I was in, nothing else. I hope you enjoyed the video for what it is, a rather poorly put together film, which I thoroughly enjoyed making and wanted to share. All the best and thanks for commenting 😁👍
why would you rely on apple maps only an idiot would everyone has a third party dedicated app os , outdooractive etc i agree if your not a day hiker use a garmin but the ultra isn't only a activity watch apart from that 🙌🙌 to your channel
The AWU2 is an awesome bit of kit and will outdo the Garmin in many aspects. I wanted to review them out of the box to see how they compare. I did state that there would be additional 3rd party software that would probably do a better job than the native app, but I didn’t do much research on these as the ones I looked at were chargeable. After £800 for the watch, I didn’t expect to pay additionally for maps. Again, the AWU is a great bit of kit, it’s just not for everyone. Thanks for watching and commenting. 👍
