Hey don't hate on a good band. Anthony likes his mainstream pop music. Me i like more complex articulated music. Not some boring autotuned crap on a Kesha beat. Rock>pop Pop is poop
I dunno man, I agree this album is really sugar sweet and has some ridiculous lyrics, but it's just so damn catchy and fun to listen to. It gets over the top and ridiculous but that's part of what's so fun about it. It feels playful and I can't help but smile whenever I listen to it.
Holy shit I hadn’t heard that band for years. I was 13 and I went and saw mcr in Brisbane Australia and in the line up was circa survive. They blew me away
I wouldn't say that Circa Survive and Dance Gavin Dance are really comparable. Circa Survive is more ambient and ethereal. Dance Gavin Dance is very tight and focused. If you like Circa Survive though, check out Hail The Sun, especially the latest album Mental Knife. The singer is very similar to Anthony Green.
This review initially put me off this band. Three years later I checked them out properly. Anthony put me off one of my new favourite bands. These dudes are amazing - complex, aggressive, poppy, catchy, mathy, and mind-blowing. They never get old, have had their albums on repeat for like a year. PLEASE GIVE THESE GUYS A TRY DESPITE THIS REVIEW IF YOU HAVEN'T, CHANGED MY LIFE
he doesn't mention how amazing will swan is. he is the heart of the band. you just don't hear too many guitarists like him. that's the reason they've survived so many line-up changes.
I find it really interesting that you didn't mention a single thing about the instruments, which is, arguably, the strongest point of DGD. It was just "tight." I could see where the cleans could be over produced and annoying, and the screams have never made much lyrical sense. The "clashing" of the two may come off as repetitive over the course of the album. However, I don't think that the album warranted a 1/10, lmao
That's what happens when you have an idiot whose range of music IQ is bottom of the barrel hip hop music, and wants to criticize the validity of the lyrical content of Dance Gavin Dance. He seriously said that the only lyrics that made sene were the clean vocals. Since the first album, DGD made it a staple to make all the harsh vocals completely incoherent. The joke is literally on him 😂😂
@@cornpop3315..... But that doesn't make it good. I'm a huge math rock, posthrock, emo rock and metal with gutteral vocals but DGD just doesn't do it for me.
@@cornpop3315 I will never understand why people are so butthurt about Fantano's reviews, why does it bother you so much that he doesn't like this album? I don't think it's a 1/10, but you seem to think you're the authority on what is good and bad... AF never said his opinions on music are correct. He's allowed to hate this album. It doesn't make him right, it doesn't make him wrong. Just like your opinions, which I'm sure if you made a video detailing your opinions on music people would clown you too. Chill out and try to understand what an opinion is.
@@jackdavid8616 Because he has a huge following and reviewing something that you absolutely have no IQ on is just a huge diservice to the band. His opening dialogue about the history of post hc was alarmingly incorrect on so many levels, which proves that he was not suitable for reviewing this. It's basically legal slander off of sheer stupidity.
Post-hardcore switches between screaming and clean singing, and in other news, water is wet. C'mon Anthony, try harder man. Eagles vs Crows is beyond tightly performed, and interestingly enough, Will Swan, the guitarist who screamed in the first line up raps that verse. Also, Jon Mess' screams aren't throat shredding, he has impeccable technique and is one of the most consistent live screamers I've ever seen. I will concede on Tillian's voice being nasally, but that's not a bad thing. The departure from hypermasculine vocals kind of makes it a pleasant mix, and let's everyone be honest, that Evanescence comparison is more over the top than the production on the vocals. I give Anthony's review a 2/10.
+Matthew Stevens Will swan screamed in the second line-up, Jon mess was the original screamer, just didnt record on happiness because of health problems :) now you know DGD4L
DGD has been my favorite band since WISIRO and I agree eith his review. Me and my former bandmates loved DGD as musicians who needed something this hard hitting. You do and listen to so much music, everything seems dull. But I know I can't put it on in the car with a majority of my friends and Anthony sums up exactly why. The dude knows music really well across genres and time periods, I'm glad he can be objective and blunt rather than "i appreciate all music" type of b.s.
Pressley - the TH-camr formerly known as Vesylum he got Lyme Disease and had to learn how to scream again which is why he sounds different from Acceptance speech onwards. My source is a Facebook post from Jon a while ago that I will link if I can find it
I never listened to DGD before this album. this album actually made me a fan. A 1 out of 10 is way off in my opinion. I also think the singing melodies are a strong point becuase they're creative and different. sometimes people here something creative and think "this doesnt sound right. this is bad" also, did you mention Circa Survive as a band you arent into? that would explain a lot
the guy who screams for dance gavin dance actually saw this and when asked about it just said "i have no idea why anthony would review this anthony doesn't really like our genre anyway" also on my own note anthony actually just complained about the way they go back and forth from screams so clean but thats what a chunk of post hardcore does normally
@@CrunkPartyBitches i mean its not really a necessary aspect but it is very common. Plus dance gavin dance is barely post hardcore so you cant exactly review it just as that. Its a pretty terrible review honestly. And i dont say that as someone who thinks fantano is an idiot
The two opposites are what make it so amazing to listen to. The cleans are clean to the extreme like you said, and the harsh vocals have been perfected to sound just as that, harsh. Tillian's voice cutting through them and soaring over the music is beautiful.
theneedledrop so, I've been a fan of Dance Gavin Dance up until their last release, Acceptance Speech.what do you think of their release "Happiness" if you've ever listened to it?
I agree 100% with Anthony on the DGD review I’ve never really got into them thought they were pretty awful But I absolutely agree with you on Juturna!! Such a great album! I still listen to it a couple times a year now
Juturna I'd say will never age for me I still hear it to this day loving every track I mean fuck were all thieves, stop the fucking car and in fear in faith will never fade for me
Even if this video is incredibly negative towards this album, I need to commend this video because Anthony gave me some amazing suggestions. If I didn't see this review, I would've never checked out bands like The Fall of Troy, Blood Brothers, At the Drive In, Circa Survive, and Brand New. These are still some of my favorite bands/artists of all time, so I ended up loving this negative review.
If I had to use words to describe DGD's music I'd use "safe" and "predictable" rather than "experimental" or "weirdness", but to each his own I suppose.
Its totally possible to be all those things at once. It just depends on the album and the song. DGD has always mixed post hardcore with funk, soul, pop, metal, & hip hop. If thats not experimental and weird, as a band set apart from most post hardcore, then i dont fucking know
Holy Shit! A 1? These guys are super talented. I've been following you for years and have never disagreed more. The horrible Foxygen album review I agree with but a 1 for DGD? God damn. I remember learning to play guitar and hoping to be as good as Will Swan someday.
Here's a shocking statistic: he's only given TWO albums exactly a 1/10. He's had several 2/10 reviews and THREE 0/10 reviews, but only TWO 1/10 review. That's right, he has given more albums a 0/10 than a 1/10.
@@ryanchain9746 that would be not good. 0/10 is something he was hoping he would be better than he thought it would be. 0/10 is like oh God... What a tremendous failure. Not good is like yeah I'm not surprised lol
Seriously circa and dgd is life this guy just doesnt like this genre its obvious i don't even know why he did a review, its no wonder he's been doing this whole youtube thing for years and still doesnt have a lot of subscribers.
Lord Paez "this guy just doesnt like the genre" Did you not listen to the first 2 minutes of this review?? He just mentioned like a shite load of Hardcore/Post-Hardcore/Metalcore bands, get outta here
IWANTYOUR RECORDS Yeah he mentioned alot of Hardcore/Post-Hardcore/Metalcore bands, but not really any with high tenor males. It seems he's just another one of those "ughh, too whiny for mee" kinda guys. Which is fine I guess, whatever, opinions are opinions.
Didn't enjoy Circa Survive before Blue Sky Noise. Took me a while to get used to the whiny vocals but got there in the end. Also, I wouldn't say that On Letting Go is one of the greatest albums ever but The Greatest Lie is one of the best songs ever.
TFoT are pretty good, ATDI are defiantly god tier and so are Glassjaw. Thanks for being one of the only comments on here to not give me a massive headache from just reading.
I grew up with this band so maybe I am a little bias but I thought this was their best yet. The points you make are valid, just not my opinion. Sorry you didn't enjoy it. But if there is anyone who'd still want to check the album out, I think you should.
***** I don't really think anyone should take his opinions to heart about a "overproduced" band unless they feel the same way about the production. Everyone knows he doesn't like bands like this. He's a bit biased because the production ruins it for him.
Yeah thats because everything since their first full length DBM was dogshit. DBM is the only album they ever made with the original members. I saw all the original members play live back in like 07 and it was incredible.
setyourgoals55 ...actually they made DBM2 with the original members as well. Besides, will swan does most of the music writing anyway. He wrote nearly everything on every album besides lyrics.
I love how people think that just because you make an album and put a lot of work into it, you can't give the album a bad score. "You can review albums, just don't give them the score you think they deserve." I'm not a fan of DGD and I don't think they deserve a one but I stand behind Anthony's opinion because it's his opinion. Your opinion of his opinion can be that it's totally wrong but both opinions are equally valid.
+Jake Peterson While I do agree with you on opinions, a 1 out of 10 is way too excessive. If you want to hear a 1 out of 10 look up the song ice cream by blood on the dance floor.
I really liked your reviews most of the time, but to hear you diss Thursday, Circa Survive AND Dance Gavin Dance in the same video just breaks my heart. I just can't abide your opinion on these bands, I think they make/made some of the most innovative post-hardcore in history. DGD are legends in the scene for good reason.
Ikr!? Circa is one of the most original bands to come out of post-hardcore in a loooong time and he disses them 'cause, "the vocals are 2 high" ugh it's not like our late opinions are going to change anything though...
+redriverhautbois They don't. Those bands, Dance Gavin Dance in particular, take influence from bands like At the Drive-In and The Mars Volta but make it poppy and sugary to the point of being unlistenable. It's fast-food post-hardcore.
I don't know ,man. I've never heard of this band but the lashing it got from this review caused me to check them out. I definitely didn't hear a "1 to light 2". IMO this was so far off the mark that I have to question the validity of your opinions from here on out. At least from my perspective. I'm not being a smart ass, I'm just being honest.
This band has been around for nearly 10 years making the sound they have been used to playing. Their music appeals mainly to the 13-18 crowd. Their first 3 albums were great, in my opinion, when they came out. I grew out of the Hardcore genres but Downtown Battle Mountain (their debut) is still a remarkable album. Worth checking that out.
+tookedeamon Even I as a huge hip hop head believe that Kendrick's TPAB deserves the 10/10 even though I don't listen to it very often or enjoy it that much. It is unique and a very new sound done to a hip hop album with basically perfect execution. The Tupac interview was so unexpected and surprising and of course the poem was also great because it shows his stance on today's political issues. All while being in order and flowing song to song with the poem having something to do with the next song. Great features, diverse topics, great production, lyrics. A great album.
Two things: 1. Stroke God, Millionaire is fucking amazing and comes off as a red-headed step child on this album. 2. I feel like Dance Gavin Dance acts as a gateway to more progressive and more technical music in and outside of their own genre because of how they blend technical instrumentals with the heavy pop overtones that their lyrics and choruses give off. A band like DGD appeals more to casual listeners than something less pop and more progressive like The Fall of Troy would because the casual listener is more familiar pop melodies than they are with weird time signatures and unordinary song structure. Then one day they come across a Sianvar song or a CHON song and go, "Hey, this reminds me of Dance Gavin Dance". Then CHON turns into Scale the Summit and Scale the Summit turns into Plini and Plini turns into Covet and so on and so forth. Now does this style of songwriting work all the time? No. Instant Gratification outside of a couple songs is a mess even for something as Mess-y as Dance Gavin Dance. But you listen to an album like Mothership or Downtown Battle Mountain II and it works.
WHOOT, a 1/10...must watch this. (Yes, I have just realised I'm just a mindless entertainment consumer who craves the _instant gratification_ of extreme scores and controversy to quench my interest, over actual discussion and debate. Too bad.)
DGD isn't for everyone, this is something we all need to get on. I like DGD really dig Instant Gratification, Anthony doesn't and Guess what I enjoyed watching this because his intake on things is interesting. You like it, you don't like it, it's your opinion and he explains why he doesn't like it, the end.
+Junnie yeah. i can see why he doesnt like it. some songs miss the mark for me. the cuddler, eagle verse crow, something new, lost. there was good parts in all of these but as a whole i wasnt feeling them. some of the screaming felt aimless isntead of having a provocative flow that i liked. i liked hearing what he had to say about it though even though he didnt have to throw it under the bus like that
SweaterPaws I know this comment is old, but THANK YOU. I'm so glad people can enjoy this album and still listen to Anthony's opinion and enjoy it. That is the beauty of opinions, everyone has a different one. I don't think this album was terrible, it might be like a 6/10 for me, but I watch Anthony not to take his opinions, but listen to him and see if I agree or not and think about the music more. Edit: The more I listen to this album the more I agree with Anthony actually. It just makes me sick to my stomach to listen to them more than once for some reason. I don't know if it's just me or what, but it just gives me a bad gut reaction when listening. I'm feeling more of a 2/10 now, but that doesn't mean I can't still value other people's positive opinions on it :)
This is dgd's worst album. Coming from a hardcore dgd fanboy I can admit that. I dont believe it deserved a 1. Maybe a 3 from me but it sucks that this is the only album he gave a listen to.
I follow dgd because in my eyes they're just talented, the riffs are well executed and the vocals are hard to pull off. There live shows are amazing too. I encourage you to review Artificial Selection.
Y'know, I respect Mr. Fantano. I'm pretty sure he's a swell guy. However, from watching his videos I've realized that we're basically polar opposites in terms of musical opinion and this review is a perfect example of that fact. I've been a Dance Gavin Dance fan for quite a while now. I've dug all their releases including their most recent album to the point where this one is probably my second favorite with Downtown Battle Mountain 1 being my favorite and their self titled album being a close third. I fully admit that I'm a fanboy. However, what got my goat isn't just that he disliked the music but that it seems like he hasn't really researched the band and sort of goes out of his way to shit on it. Case and point, his critique of Death of a Strawberry where he dismisses Tilian's "I'll be your sugar daddy" line as sort of stupid and random when if you look at the lyrics preceding it they outline someone going through a life crisis with the passage, "Sick of being in my head and thinkin about my fate And worried about my health/Wanna waste away my days with a pretty young thing And blow through all my wealth". It's in this crisis that they seek the thrill of being youthful again and it's through this that they decide to have a little fun as shown in the line literally right before the sugar daddy line, "Just for the day we’ll pretend I’m made of money". It's in this way that they subvert expectations where the chorus is all fun and poppy but looking deeper reveals an edge that re-contextualizes the song. Another example of Fantano not doing his research is his analysis of We Own the Night where he again completely dismisses Tilian's verse as silly, poppy nonsense. However, if you look at the funky as fuck key change near the end of the song (my favorite part of the song) Tilian comes back and gives us this. "Call your phone and open my fate cuz I know you're so connected/ I need poison mitigate my pain/ Feel my toes go golden up in flames/ Give me false hope in my veins/ Tranquilize and modify my brain. Where did I go wrong/ There's nothing I can do the thrill is gone/ So I play these nervous songs/ Pretend that I’m not barely hanging on". This key change gives the "party party" lyrics a desperate edge. The spark between them is gone and he needs her "to drink till she believes it" to rekindle that magic. I'm not asking for much here. I'm asking that he reads the damn lyrics before criticizing them. You had your phone in the video, Fantano! Look up the fucking lyrics! I'm not even asking that he try to analyze Jon Mess' fucking out there lyrics. I'm asking that he look at the very blunt, "audible" passages from Tilian. And another thing, Mr. Death Grips fanboy over here wants to talk about unintelligible lyricism? For fuck sake, without the lyrics in front of me MC Ride's words are so garbled that I can't even tell what he's saying! And I'm not hating on Death Grips, Spread Eagle Cross the Block is my jam! I'm just saying that I don't really think I can trust Mr. Fantano's definition of "unintelligible". Again, I get the fact that you don't like the album and I can even see why. Tilian Pearson's voice isn't for everyone and their style isn't exactly the most universally liked. But that whole masochist comparison leaves me no other choice but to just say, fuck you, Fantano. You could have just said something like, "I feel like a masochist listening to this album because it puts me in pain,". It would have been funny and a little witty but when you compare fans to masochists essentially saying that nobody can like this in a sincere, artistic way made me lose respect for you. You're basically going down that path that a bunch of fucking edgelords did in the early 2000's with webpages like, "Your Favorite Music is Terrible!" Seriously, that comment wouldn't be out of place in a Your Band Sucks piece. In 2006. For evidence, this is what Your Band Sucks had to say about Coheed & Cambria's Good Apollo Volume 1 album. "This record is a festering pile of horrible masturbatory pap and if you are a fan of Coheed & Cambria, I can say with the utmost confidence that you are a bona-fide tin-eared nerd with absolutely no concept of what makes music good or bad, evidenced by the fact that you are simultaneously listening to the three lamest, dorkiest, and most artistically bankrupt genres of music ever invented, all at the same time, coagulated and mashed together into a sickening, putrid sludge of pretentiousness and idiocy by a group of people who are either too stupid to know the abominable sins they are committing against the art of music or who are evil enough to willfully package and sell what they know to be the ultimate test of consumer stupidity. Either way, you fail." Ooh boy, I just love the smell of tryhard edginess. With added thesaurus in places to make them sound smart! Again, let me reiterate, it isn't that you dislike the band that made me lose respect for you, it's the fact that you feel the need to put yourself on a pedestal above people that listen to that music. It's adhering to the angry reviewer trope that a piece of media isn't just bad, it's shitloads of fuck bad. It's physically destroy it bad. It's that trendy bullshit that I thought you were against, but apparently not. Thank you, and goodnight.
***** Jon Mess' lyrics are fucking weird, I never denied that. However, I can see the credence in the "your boat is my paddle" line because it's continued with, "your life is my business, your plaque on my wall". With these lines connected, he's essentially saying that you exist as a means to advance himself. Your "boat" is you and it being a paddle him using you to his advantage. "Your life is my business, your plaque on my wall" is another saying of this concept with the addition of, anything that you accomplish, he also owns indirectly. When viewed as a complete work, We Own the Night depicts alcoholism in its many facets. There's Tilian's bits where alcohol tries and fails to keep a tattered relationship together and Jon's bits about how you can be taken advantage of while under the influence as well as a vague description of what alcohol does to somebody. The "flicking the back of your ear with my finger" line, refers to how being drunk impairs your senses and sort of makes you a child, as flicking ears is something children do. ***** Yes, Jon's words are random when he writes them, but meaning in itself is subjective. Heck, there's people that tattoo Jonny Craig's lyrics from DBM1 because they find meaning in them even though he literally just improvised them. To them, they have loads of meaning or else they wouldn't put it on their fucking skin.
***** This has to be one of the best responses I've ever seen to an intense critique. I'm obviously a big dance gavin dance fan if you read any of my other comments on this video, but you've shown even me that there's more than meets the eye with their lyrics which I'm happy to find out are far more nuanced and meaningful than what I assumed were just happy-go-lucky fun to round out some of the more "low" or less confident (lyrically) tracks. This is honestly going to make me look deeper into their lyrical content, because I've always found depth musically, but I've typically never read too much into what they're saying.
Great comment. I never enjoyed his reviews because I always thought he was too egotistical. I'm a big dgd fan and you hit it on the head. I wouldn't mind this review so much if he didn't give it a fucking 1. I mean I understand that's his opinion and all but considering he gives other hipster "too deep and cool for you" shit high ratings but can't even respect this enough to give it over a one is sickening.
***** Hes not egotistical because of his rating for this album. He just seems like a hipser 2cool4u im so indie type to me which is why I dont watch his videos. I looked up instant gratification and saw this so I figured i'd check it out. I understand he detailed why he gave it a one, but I dont think any of his point really made much sense. I understand that it's his opinion but I think this review was completely unfair.
Whew, that was painful. The reasons he dislikes the band are the reasons why all of us love them. It was hard for me to get over Jon Mess's lyrics at first, but now I see that the band wouldn't be even close to the same without them. They are quirky, ironic, and unapologetic on purpose, and unlike any other band right now. After the year Rise has been having, making all of their big name bands sound extremely similar, it makes me love DGD even more.
@@KJlegend18 this doesn't make sense at all...? Do you know what songwriting actually is and what it equates to? The fact that they can even be as tight as they are with as much syncopation as they incorporate into their music is beyond incredible. "Smooth brain" yourself, buzz wordy little prick.
People always told me the DGD was on of the better modern post-hardcore acts, but they always looked at me weird when I said I couldn't stand the vocals. Thank you Dancethony Gavintano for shedding light on these diabetes causing vocals.
+Zeptasom Clearly you haven't listened to either of their other vocalists, but that's to be expected from some random dumbass on TH-cam; calling something bad based on one album.
+drewisnew I'm pretty sure some people do, or else he wouldn't be the biggest music reviewer on TH-cam. Also, this album is straight garbage to me, so I agree with him.
You either hate or love DGD in my opinion. If you don't understand how the band works or where they're coming from, you won't like them. If you're an actual fan of this band, you would know that this is arguably one of their best releases to date.
Jake Abernacky so basically if you don't already have a biased hard-on for the band's previous work then you'll actually be forced to take this album at face value for what it genuinely is: bad
Jake Abernacky No it's the other way around. If you know where this band is coming from (post hardcore) then you'll probably hate it. If you don't then you'll love it.
Ill be honest. The lyrics are corny at times. The rap verse is weird. *and we get it you don't like the hard-soft hard-soft vocals tony* jeez. Im a DGD fan. But in all honesty this album is at LEAST a 3. Even by your standards Anthony. A ONE?!
EDIT: MY OPINION HAS CHANGED, THIS ALBUM IS BAD AND I WAS IN DENIAL BECAUSE I LIKED THE SINGLE "ON THE RUN" AND WANTED TO LIKE THE WHOLE ALBUM. EXCUSE MY FANBOYING. I don't really get why you reviewed something you have no taste for. Like if it was really that bad was it like, "Well I've listened to it, might as well make that worth something." I mean, personally I don't listen to music for lyrics and I enjoy the production and composition of their music. While this is definitely not even a remarkable album for them by any means and Tillian's vocals are very not for everyone, I still think it's written competently. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ probably a biased opinion because this is the only modern post hardcore band I'm into because they don't sound as horribly generic to me as really any of the others I listen to. They're no At The Drive In, but I really do love at the very least their instrumentals, which you really didn't even cover really.
Christian Vitale Thats why other peeps have to start doing reviews instead of this dude. He shits on so much quality music yet praises some horrible rap albums (and I have me some Hopsin and FlyLo btw)...you can just tell rock is not his cup of tea so he should just shut his damn mouth and not even bother. You don't have to review EVERY album that comes out.
***** Being in college doesn't mean you're not stupid, and the fact that you would suggest somebody doesn't like rock because they don't like this piece of trash album is a clear sign of stupidity.
Christian Vitale The instrumentals, for me, weren't really a selling point because they were so consistently overshadowed by these deafeningly obnoxious vocals, lyrics, and cliched transitions between these soft/melodic and aggressive moments. I think isolated moments in these instrumentals are decent, but they're clashed together in a way I find supremely gross. The instrumentals just felt desperate to create contrast between these two flavors of rock again and again and again and again. While the playing may be flashy at points, what flash adds up to just does nothing for me. And, like I said in the end of the review, I don't think it's a matter of just not having a taste for this style of music. There are plenty of posthxc bands I've enjoyed over the years, and DGD pulls direct influence from some of them. It's not like I'm completely unfamiliar with the style of music they're playing in.
***** Dude, literally every single person who disagrees with him tells him to listen to some other goddamn form of music. Rap fans tell him to stick to rock, rock fans tell him to stick to rap, Aphex Twin fans tell him to stop listening all together, what is he supposed to do?
While I do admire a reviewers attempt to critically analyze something so profoundly and give their own in depth conclusion to someone's work, I have to play devils advocate in saying this all sounded extremely bias and personal. Perspective is everything I think, as a musical theory student, I can tell you for a fact that bands like dance Gavin dance and circa survive are not your average clone of over contrasted, unoriginal artists. those genetic types tend to be lumped together so ungracefully with those musicians, it's a rather common misconception that is starting to become so repetitive and a bit ignorant. one thing people fail to see in music is creativity, how a group of people can create sounds that mesh together in like perfect synchronicity. Of course opinions are going to over shadow the fact that these musicians truly do have strong points that simply can't be mimicked by your average Joe. In fact I find I rather ironic how you praised brand new, while Jesse does process the gift of poetic language. Their instruments are truly lacking. Most of their songs are all in 4/4s signatures, most involving the same strumming patterns, the same transitions, the same chord progression. their only salvation being their uncanny ability to flow with smooth lyrics and tasteful melodies. While dance Gavin dance has background in music knowledge, time signature transition, key transitions, variety in general. circa survive has a rather strong jazz backing. I'm trying to understand your angle?
Joseph Martinez Just because they can play technically doesn't make the songs any better. What matters first and foremost is whether or not the song is good, not whether they switched from a 7/8 to a 3/4 in the same song. Essentially Songwriting>Technical Ability.
Joseph Martinez as much as I disagree with fantano, reviews are by nature biased and personal. There are plenty of technical bands that are absolutely trash at songwriting, Brain Drill and most of the catalog of Rings of Saturn come to mind. DGD writes great, technical songs IMO, but he's not reviewing the talent here - he's reviewing the music, and he doesn't like how it's written one bit.
Joseph Martinez Lol if you were actually a music theory student you would understand that even a relatively inexperienced jazz guitarist could run circles around anything these guys compose with extreme ease. That said, technical doesn't necessarily mean good.
composition and release have nothing to do with actual talent and ability. its rather ignorant how you blindly stated an inexperienced jazz guitarist could run circles around them, not knowing how much background and knowledge these guys actually carry lol. that being said most these guys actually do have musical education. in jazz guitar, theory, and composition. technicality does indeed play a crucial role in creativity and ability. lol
It doesn't matter how much theory these bands know, what I'm talking about is how much theory they incorporate into their music. There just isn't that much theory involved in their stuff. The occasional time signature shift or key change is really nothing special, even pop songs incorporate those elements of composition from time to time. So yes, an inexperienced jazz guitarist could run circles around the bands you mentioned, and very likely write more interesting riffs as well.
I've been a fan of DGD since 2009 and I still love to hear their albums over and over again. The way you reviewed this album and about their artistry was far removed, like it would be from someone who reviews a spectrum of music, so for a true fan of the music it was evident how important you were trying to make this video. I agreed with, and laughed about, a lot of what you simplified them into, but I think you missed a lot of what is great about them. The only things you mentioned that were great about them was how "tight" the production and performance (?) was. I believe DGD is polishing into one of the best bands from the last couple decades.
I listened to this album for 6 weeks straight when it came out. this was the definition of instant gratification for me. even though mothership is my fav mow
no, we really don't need to hear some dude's opinion (please don't ask why I'm here then, just doing research for a video and wanted to see the dislike ratio)
It’s just going to be another bias opinion. He doesn’t like the style so there’s no point of him reviewing bands in this style because it’s not going to be a review based off the bands individual work
I love the band Dance Gavin Dance. This man does not. And that is absolutely fine. He makes some valid points about the band and their music, he has his own perspective and beliefs. I accept that 100%. But then he says some unnecessary things that ruin, in my opinion, the validity of his argument. I respect other people's opinions, I really do, but when a reviewer goes so far as to suggest that the fans of a band are "masochistic," such as he does around 6:42-6:58, that's when I lose my respect for his opinion. But in the end we all have our own opinions, and that is why I am sitting here disagreeing with this man and a vast majority of the comments I have read. I am not going to attack anyone for having a differing opinion however. To do so would be absolute bullshit. See, the great thing about music, and anything else really, is that it affects everyone differently. We all have our own favorite bands and songs, we all have those lyrics that seem to speak directly to us, and we all have that one instrumental that makes us smile like a fool. Music is amazing, and personally I don't know where I'd be without it. But that's just me. So, while I enjoy reading reviews and listening to reviews, I know that one person's opinion is not the end all be all. Thus, if you haven't listened to Instant Gratification yet on your own, I urge you to do so. You might find something in it to like that this reviewer does not. Or maybe you'll hate it. The thing is, you won't know unless you try. And you can't really have an opinion about something until you've experienced it for yourself, which is why I personally never write something off until I've given it a go. Thanks for reading!
I appreciate that you're being very diverse with your reviews, but this really isn't your scene and I don't think you'd like anything that came out of it anyway, so I'm not really sure why you chose to even make this.
KimonoChrono I'm pretty sure the reason he categorically went through all of the influential xcore albums at the start of the video was to invalidate these sorts of claims. Fantano clearly knows his post-hardcore, which shouldn't be a surprise seeing as Fantano is extremely well versed in music in general. Hell, he gave La Dispute's Wildlife a 9 just a few years ago.
KimonoChrono Since you missed a vast amount of the video where he names off post-hardcore he enjoys (as well as stuff he's reviewed), here's a basic list. Drive Like Jehu, Fugazi, The Refused, Envy, Touché Amoré, La Dispute, Rites of Spring, Fall of Troy, Shellac, Hüsker Dü, Minutemen, Blood Brothers, Big Ups, and At The Drive-In (as well as Mars Volta if you want to count them). I don't always agree with Fantano's reviews (I thought Drenge's "Undertow" and Fallujah's "The Flesh Prevails" were both great, he didn't care for them as much) but don't say that he shouldn't review it because it "isn't his scene" when it clearly is. He reviews things he wants to talk about, both good and bad.
Jack Hooper There's different styles of post-hardcore. He states disliking Circa Survive, so he's definitely biased towards this particular type of post-hardcore. It's just not his cup of tea.
HOLY SHIT A STRONG 1?? I haven't even listened to this record yet but I know that Dance Gavin Dance are a group of highly talented musicians and write beautiful songs and comically ridiculous and incohesive lyrics. the first three albums are gilded in my favorite albums collection and I'm appalled that you rates this one so low. I haven't listened to it, honestly. but it can't be that horrible!! I don't think you "understand" what DGD are trying to do. they just wanna make good, listenable music and most of the time, it is absolutely just that. maybe YOU'RE just bias because you didn't like them on previous albums. Downtown Battle Mountain, forever.
Agreed, will did a small rap verse on acceptance speech as well. Pretty sure acceptance speech was recorded in Atlanta which is why he did it like in the spirit of where a ton of hip hop comes from. Guess they decided to do it again.
@@mutuallysustainedhateboner1426 he picks and chooses his arguments and points to further his point rather than presenting the said information as to inform the viewer if its worth their time
Anthony is obviously biased against this kind of music and because of those preferences, the result is gonna be controversial. With that being said, this is his channel and he can give whatever scores he wants. (But seriously, DGD's instrumentals are insane, the score is mostly based on their vocals and songwritting.)
My god, never have I heard a person completely not understand a band or a piece of music, in its entirety, ever. Like you just don’t get it man, fair enough, but you completely missed the trick with this one.
@@vexedpixels Lmao thinking people that don't like the music you do just "don't get it" is a pretty dangerous world view to have. Enjoy your music pal. I'm sure there is music you don't understand the appeal of. Who cares? It's one person's opinion who just happens to run a popular TH-cam channel. Get some rest.
I think the reason this guy pisses people off so much is because he's able to articulate his opinions very well and in a very convincing way. I love dance Gavin Dance, every single album. But listening to this interview, I am reminded of how poor some of the clean lyrics are. Not Jon Mess' lyrics, which personally I live, but Tilian's. Other than that I think it's all just a matter of opinion. The vocal styles are definitely not for everyone.
No, he just says stupid things. Lyrics make up like 25% of a song. A lot of people listen to music over lyrics, which makes this review completely irrelevant since it ignores the other 75% of the album, the music and melodies, which is what makes it what it is, not the lyrics.
I’m sorry as a gtr player the songs on this album are incredibly dynamic and creative riff wise. It’s like mind blowing listening to this all these years later. Like I’m genuinely shook how you said strong 1 so effortlessly. Like did you even listen to it?
Yo dawg? Do you understand who DGD is? and like what sarcasm is? You also didn't mention any instrumentals. At all. This review made me drop a lot of respect for you. You almost made no good points. Which is weird because you normally have awesome points and tastes.
Cole Fleming Agreed. Just not his taste of music and its really obvious. DGD is pretty much one of the only bands in this genre I still listen to nowadays.
Cole Fleming Fantano knows zero about emo, metalcore, and post-hardcore. Him not liking Circa Survive alone should set off some alarms. I hate DGD but every time he opens his mouth about those genres, I immediately disregard everything he has to say.
I've been a fan of Dance Gavin Dance for quite some time. (Since their 2nd album came out) and I've seen them progress and try new things while still keeping their roots and sound that they made for themselves. One thing that I've always loved about Dance Gavin Dance is that their songs are widely open to interpretation. Personally, I've always interpreted their seemingly random switches from clean to unclean vocals as conflicts going on in their heads, constantly battling with how they actually feel on whatever they're writing about. I've looked a lot into their lyrics over the years and a lot of it can literally mean anything, but I feel as if I've always understood what they were trying to do as artists. As for Will Swan's rap verse in "Eagle vs Crows", who's to say you can't have a little fun writing a song? I was extremely happy to see Will get a few bars in a song again. It was nostalgic, fun and refreshing to me. I feel as if a 1/10 is a greatly one-side rating, but I respect your opinion.
And I stated MY opinion about his reviews Lolol. Even still, its just very weird. It's like reviewing nothing but these kinds of bands and then randomly I review Kanye West and give it a 1 lol. Kinda silly since I know its not my thing already. Honestly would make more sense if he loved this type of stuff and still gave it a 1.
@@itjustworks4044 Yeah but he didn't just disagree. He asserted that the reviewer "didn't understand" just because they didn't share opinions. Hence, the Ricky and Morty meme applies here. "It's just my opinion that you don't have a high enough IQ to like what I like" lol
The amount of dislikes this video has just clearly proves this clown wrong. Mothership deserves a solid 5 out of 5 due to the incredible musical atmoshphere. He souldn't be giving good music a 1 just because he hates the style..
Thursday is definitely an underrated band in the 00s wave of post hardcore. I also used to lump them in with other weak band in the scene like Silverstein or senses fail, but even as my tastes have developed over the past decade , Thursday has continued to impress me. They show strong musicianship, song writing, passionate delivery, and were also willing to push the genre's boundaries with multiple release. Have you listened to their debut, 'Waiting' , Anthony? While i think 'Full Collapse' is their best, 'Waiting' has the raw DIY charm and features Geoff's intimate yet thought provoking lyrics. I understand his voice is inaccessible, but if people would ignore their initial aesthetic impression of it, it might grow on them based on all their other Quality factors. GIVE IT A SHOT Anthony.
So basically you're disliking everything that make DGD unique. Plus you make no comparison with the previous records so people can know if DGD is improving or something. I was myself doing music reviews on a website but at some point I figured out how pointless it is... It just hurt the bands and the fans for no reason. If you take in account all your critics on this band you should review CONVERGE, it is an awesome post-hardcore band
I think that DGD are quite an acquired taste. I've been listening to them for a couple of years now, and I enjoy their style a lot! But also, not a lot of people I play them to can digest their music. As for the lyrics, you would have to listen to a lot of their previous stuff to understand what they are on about and to get their vibe. Rap parts are a classic for DGD and it just shows that they don't take themselves too seriously. When you look at the whole posthardcore ganre, I think of them as a very refreshing. This album may not be the best of their work, but still, I think they are a band that deserves an objective listening.
everything post Downtown Battle Mountain is trash anyway. DGD was the first to do the whole R&B infused post-hardcore (see: "It's Safe to Say You Dig The Backseat" and "The Importance of Cocaine") and they did it well. That alone is commendable.
Well a review is usually something that you come into with an unbiased approach, you're meant to "review" an album fairly and without prejudice. thats like me coming in to a meeting to review a new xbox or something and starting it off with, "first of all let me just say that ive never played any of the previous xboxs and i think microsoft are shit, but lets continue..." do you think anyone would care about my review?
if people valued your opinion, yeah. and even though that person might not have played on a previous Xbox or might hate Microsoft, that doesn't mean that person 1) can't say something meaningful about the product and 2) can't change their mind. I'll say this review was an odd choice given his prejudices vs the genre and band, but bias and opinions are a staple of reviews. people want to hear his opinion.
Ill admit after reading my comment again it sounds stupid. Your right in saying that he's allowed review the album however he likes as as you stated, music preference is subjective. What i meant to get across is ,how you aptly said, it is an "odd choice given his prejudices". I just feel that this isint really a review and more of a "i hate this album because" if u know what I mean? Like I dont understand why he chose to put together a video review about an album he very clearly hates.
well he even states he wasn't going to do one for it so I dunno why, but opinions and criticism should be allowed regardless of how positive or negative they are. wouldn't it be weird if all you saw were positive reviews? no one with a dissenting opinion? I agree it's an odd choice to make a full-blown review here, unless he thought it could change his mind or maybe there was something redeemable. but people value his opinion and want to hear his opinion so that's what he did, I suppose.
I am obsessed with DGD, I couldn’t live without it, I listen to at least 3 or 4 songs of them every day, every album from them is absolutely amazing, and Melon doesn’t have any taste. He does not deserve to listen to the greatness of DGD, go back to your experimental orchestra hip-hop, you... shark dad.
not everyone can wrap their head around a new unique sound, watching this in 2023 definitely seems like this video didn’t age well based on the bands current success, probably a good thing people like this aren’t into DGD
I think the biggest thing to understand is the line of his description "Y'all know this is just my opinion right?" I think this album is amazing. I think it's their best yet. It's the only album from 2015 I've listened to more than ten times this year… The band said themselves it was their highest first week of sales they've ever had. Also a ton of the nights in their tour are sold out… So the point is: Somebody likes it…
HOLY FUCK A ONE OUT OF TEN CALL THE INTERNET POLICE THE BLOOD HAS BEEN SPILLED. In all seriousness though, this is another good review although frankly this score makes me want to listen to this album. Even a 2 probably would have made me ignore this release.
calypsis you can react to reviews and scores in any way that you'd like. i don't work under the assumption that because i give something a one that you yourself need to avoid it. there's nothing wrong with seeing a negative review and being a curious about the album being reviewed as a result. do what you want, my son.
"How DARE he be so biased with his opinion! All reviews should be perfect 10s, right? Opinions aren't supposed to be up to the individual. Terrible reviews from Biasthony Gaytano." Gah, you people are whiny.
I don't think you understand how reviews work. A review is meant to be as impartial as possible. That's what critique is; it's acknowledging the artistry & intention and picking apart the techniques used to achieve them and what is actually achieved with those techniques. One of the reasons why Gerhard Richter's cathedral window in Köln is more substantial artistry than someone just bumbling around with a random colour generator is the intention and expertise in the techniques used; some concept of what he wants it to represent, some understanding of how the light from the sun will interact with the window. You can critique the effects and the achievement of the piece all you fucking want, but at the end of the day it's about personal preference and what you see. I personally love Synphony Of Light for my own reasons and I argued for literally days with someone on Twitter about what constitutes art (he was being and still is a fucking idiot in that regard) But if you're an art critic you need to stand at the side and find the empathy to understand why people like this shit. That's your job. You need to find aspects which are done well and aspects which are not, as objectively as possible while realising artistic intent, and then review from there. If you review albums on your own purely subjective terms, disregarding artistry and how other people might enjoy it, Trout Mask Replica will never be heard and will only be forgotten. Instead, Trout Mask Replica is in the Library of Congress as a masterpiece. If Fantano realised that it wasn't for him, he shouldn't have reviewed it in the first place. I'm not gonna review a Mayhem album because black metal at present isn't for me. If I did review a Mayhem album, I would be doing a disservice to myself and the music community as a whole for alienating sections of that community which enjoy the thing.
"Death of the Strawberry" is the last song of "The Strawberry Swisher" series, DGD had a few series reacurring through their albums and you can't just hate on the title sounding nonsensical when it's relating to something. Also, you took lyrics completely out of the song context, true, DGD was never about lyrics (maybe a little on the self titled and "Happiness" albums) vocalists rather use their voices as instruments but still, you can't just pick some lyrics that describe something or are building up the atmosphere or situation "Some melodic guitar thrown in there" sounds just wrong if we consider Will Swan's guitar skills With this album DGD wanted to open up for audience with their more poppy song structure and they did it while including a little bit of something from their previous works Damn, even the instrumental proficiency alone are warrants at least a light 3 Let's be real, Mr. Fantano just doesnt like this genre, he likes hardcore, punk, strange music like Death Grips. While defining the "post-hardcore" term he's referring to the bands of distant past while the whole genre evolved and branched out into something new There are no factors for such harsh rating. This video is for the people who love to see Fantano shit on things
1Sopel6 "Mr. Fantano just doesn't like the genre" as he namedrops a whole bunch of other post hardcore bands that he likes. I was going to pick apart your post because it's full of weak arguments, sentence fragments and illogical statements but it'd probably take me like 15 minutes and I just don't feel like shelling out the time to do so.
Transcedant He previously rated Pianos Become The Teeth's album "Keep You" 2 when the record really was above that. Post-hardcore has a wide range spectrum of bands and sounds and sometimes bands labeled under the same genre may not fall into the one's taste so what is the point of reviewing something that you're not fan of and your opinion most likely will be subjective (I'm kinda surprised he never liked DGD if he liked The Fall Of Troy because these two band often go hand in hand in terms of style) But yes, sorry, I apologise for this a little bit hate fueled, goofy sounding comment (as english isn't my first language) but this review is just inexplicably harsh. Fantano mentions that how bands were influenced by funk, jazz, dance beats, metal or alternative rock and he liked it. And all of these influences are here, on this record. I'll give him the vocals, I share the opinion that they're cringy at times, but not always, especially Jon Mess (the screamer) sometimes has some interesting parts, and the rapped part on Eagles vs Crows seems to be polarizing. He just took the one's that are not so bad. Also, on the PBTT review Fantano didn't take care of lyrics (which where really good and emotional) and hated on the whole form, and now he did the opposite - he focused on the lyrics (which are not the best, their main purpose is to complement the sound of the song) and ditched the whole instrumentation and the form. He just seems to see what he wants to see in the album and focus on that as if the other parts of the song didn't matter or exist, which in my opinion isn't objective. Elaborating more on my first comment, William Swan is one of the most talented, creative guitarists in the scene and saying how he just "throws some guitar here and there" is kind of insultive. But okay, I understand some may not like the production, the cleans, the screams, that one rapping part, but does it really deserve a 1? Even Lana Del Rey's "Ultraviolence" is better than this? I think this review doesn't rate this album fair, because even if some elements are not someones cup of tea there is still something to appreciate. Heck, this album has been rated by people as probably the best in DGD career. It just shouldn't be thrown into the same category as Blood On The Dancefloor or brokeNCYDE, c'mon. In other words, people should check out this album because it isn't as bad as Fantano wanted to make it to sound like.
I've listened to dgd for a number of years now and this album is probably in my top 30-50 I've heard in the last decade. Came back to see if fantano's reviewed any and man was this a slap in the face lol
It seems that everyone in the comments who glorifies Death Grips decided to hate DGD just because Anthony does. This album isn't their best but it's far from a 1/10.
This is an old ass comment, but I just wanted to say THANK YOU. It seems that most of Anthony's fans just take all of his opinions as their own and never think for themselves. If Anthony says it's a 1, so does everybody else and they'll get butthurt when someone gives their own non-brainwashed opinion. Thank you again, and sorry you had to read my rant, felt like it needed to be said.
Maybe you guys just find this terrible album good, most of Anthony's fans listen to the album and then watch the review. And stop assuming that his fans take his opinions, which I doubt you can find a single person in this comment section that can attest to that. Death Grips is glorified because they're incredible, loads of the msot respected artists out right now have taken a liking to their sound, they're critically acclaimed, and are doing something different. Dance Gavin Dance is just boring, like they're not even bad to me. Just dry, drab, and cliche. And no, purposefully bad lyrics don't work in this case.

DGD has been my favorite band since WISIRO and I agree eith his review. Me and my former bandmates loved DGD as musicians who needed something this hard hitting. Juturna I'd say will never age for me I still hear it to this day loving every track I mean fuck were all thieves, stop the fucking car and in fear in faith will never fade for me
I'm pretty sure he would give any band on Rise Records a 1/10 tbh
At The Drive-In signed on Rise Records
Even if this video is incredibly negative towards this album, I need to commend this video because Anthony gave me some amazing suggestions. If I didn't see this review, I would've never checked out bands like The Fall of Troy, Blood Brothers, At the Drive In, Circa Survive, and Brand New. These are still some of my favorite bands/artists of all time, so I ended up loving this negative review.
When Melon gives you lemons...
the kind of people who listen to DGD already knew all these bands. melon is just an old man
you said all those bands but you aint mention The Mars Volta the best band of all time 😢
Are we still allowed to enjoy Brand New? Lol
@@Minnevan
of course! they made great shit, jesse lacy be damned
Anthony doesnt get DGD.
DGD is all about being obnoxious, nonsensical, experimental weirdness. Check out all the previous albums.
Joe Britton DGD? experimental weirdness? are we listening to the same band?
Joe, I dont think you "get" Dance Gavin Dance as well
Yeah we are, and im pretty sure i do.
That's right, he has given more albums a 0/10 than a 1/10.
to me 1/10 means he didnt like the album, but only because of personal taste. and a 0/10 means its overall a bad idea
@@ryanchain9746 that would be not good. 0/10 is something he was hoping he would be better than he thought it would be. 0/10 is like oh God... What a tremendous failure. Not good is like yeah I'm not surprised lol
I'm more pissed that he talked shit on Circa Survive than him ripping this album apart...
Seriously circa and dgd is life this guy just doesnt like this genre its obvious i don't even know why he did a review, its no wonder he's been doing this whole youtube thing for years and still doesnt have a lot of subscribers.
Lord Paez "this guy just doesnt like the genre"
Did you not listen to the first 2 minutes of this review?? He just mentioned like a shite load of Hardcore/Post-Hardcore/Metalcore bands, get outta here
I'm fine with the review just surprised about the shots at Circa Survive.
FatedCircle Hardly taking a shot at them, just simply saying he is not fond of them.I like Circa but he doesn't, it really makes no difference.
He showed one of the greatest albums of all time "On Letting Go" as an example of bad music. Enough said. I'll stick to his rap reviews.

Didn't enjoy Circa Survive before Blue Sky Noise. Took me a while to get used to the whiny vocals but got there in the end.
Also, I wouldn't say that On Letting Go is one of the greatest albums ever but The Greatest Lie is one of the best songs ever.
The Fall Of Troy and At The Drive In are god tier

Damn, man. Props for not being hella ass chapped like everyone else when a band they like gets a bad review b
setyourgoals55
...actually they made DBM2 with the original members as well. Besides, will swan does most of the music writing anyway. He wrote nearly everything on every album besides lyrics.
Ben anonnimous ? he clearly said the production was fine and it was the songwriting and lyrics that were godawful
4 months later and these comments are still hilarious.
Patrick Smith Anything by Blood on the Dance Floor is a 0. I listen to them every once in a while just to laugh my ass of.
Joe Vargas 2 years later they are funny still
3 years later and still funny
I really liked your reviews most of the time, but to hear you diss Thursday, Circa Survive AND Dance Gavin Dance in the same video just breaks my heart. I just can't abide your opinion on these bands, I think they make/made some of the most innovative post-hardcore in history. DGD are legends in the scene for good reason.
Ikr!? Circa is one of the most original bands to come out of post-hardcore in a loooong time and he disses them 'cause, "the vocals are 2 high" ugh it's not like our late opinions are going to change anything though...
+redriverhautbois He just said that Thursday and Circa Survive isn't his cup of tea.
+redriverhautbois They don't. Those bands, Dance Gavin Dance in particular, take influence from bands like At the Drive-In and The Mars Volta but make it poppy and sugary to the point of being unlistenable. It's fast-food post-hardcore.
DGD is radical, but the other two.... ehhhhhhhhhh
Circa is one of the greatest post hardcore bands ever in my opinion. Thursday and Glassjaw right behind them.
IWANTYOUR RECORDS Downtown Battle Mountain is not their debut. It is definitely one of their bests, though.
***** nah
***** mad tho?
+tookedeamon Even I as a huge hip hop head believe that Kendrick's TPAB deserves the 10/10 even though I don't listen to it very often or enjoy it that much. It is unique and a very new sound done to a hip hop album with basically perfect execution. The Tupac interview was so unexpected and surprising and of course the poem was also great because it shows his stance on today's political issues.
All while being in order and flowing song to song with the poem having something to do with the next song. Great features, diverse topics, great production, lyrics. A great album.
Two things:
Ehhhh doesnt seem like you didn't like the album. It just sounds like you don't like dgd.
+Gabriel Vielma those two ideas aren't mutually exclusive
WHOOT, a 1/10...must watch this.
(Yes, I have just realised I'm just a mindless entertainment consumer who craves the _instant gratification_ of extreme scores and controversy to quench my interest, over actual discussion and debate. Too bad.)
***** I love Circa Survive tho - _On Letting Go_ 9/10
DGD isn't for everyone, this is something we all need to get on. I like DGD really dig Instant Gratification, Anthony doesn't and
Guess what
I enjoyed watching this because his intake on things is interesting.
I like it as well much better than acceptance speech
Kijyuu dude I love this band and this album was definitely their worst as a collective.
I think he mentioned it in a YUNOREVIEW and said they improved
death of a strawberry is heaven for my ears
Either way, you fail."
Ooh boy, I just love the smell of tryhard edginess.
***** Yes baebae, you tell em
They're one of my favorite bands. You can't rip me away, I love them.
After the year Rise has been having, making all of their big name bands sound extremely similar, it makes me love DGD even more.
he just doesnt have the vission to even comprehend the lyrics, let alone the idea for the music itself.
tbh I don't listen to them for lyrics at all but everything else is amazing
Oh honey, you thought the lyrics were serious and not satirical. You poor thing,
don't u dare insult needlethony droptano again you plebian
If they were satirical it might be better if they were clever or funny
No, he didn't think they're serious, they just suck.
“it’s supposed to be bad which means it’s actually good”
"...Impeccably tight."
"...There's not a single redeeming factor in Dance Gavin Dance's approach to songwriting."
"I can appreciate the artistry, it just isn't for me" "Ultra clean perfectly produced"
playing tight and songwriting don't have anything to do with eachother, smoothbrain.
Dude a fat hypocrite f*** them
@@KJlegend18 this doesn't make sense at all...? Do you know what songwriting actually is and what it equates to? The fact that they can even be as tight as they are with as much syncopation as they incorporate into their music is beyond incredible. "Smooth brain" yourself, buzz wordy little prick.
I don’t know why I’m hear, I just wanted to hear a guy tell why he likes or doesn’t like a song, but right now, I have no idea what’s happening.
People always told me the DGD was on of the better modern post-hardcore acts, but they always looked at me weird when I said I couldn't stand the vocals. Thank you Dancethony Gavintano for shedding light on these diabetes causing vocals.
Zeptasom take your insulin.

Lol i love this comment so much
Jeez, don't you guys realise that all reviews are opinion????
+Mercutio and nobody agrees with it lol
+drewisnew I'm pretty sure some people do, or else he wouldn't be the biggest music reviewer on TH-cam. Also, this album is straight garbage to me, so I agree with him.
Joe Proulx ik i was being facetious my dude. his reviews are generally hit or miss for me but i know people that take his word as gospel.
papa planku lol are you saying that just bc its his opinion we cant express ours even if its contrary to his?
I know but the vid could have been a solid 5 minutes less of him calling them horrible
LOVE it when Anthony uses a super negative review as an opportunity to suggest a shit ton of great albums
Jake Abernacky Or, you've listened to all of their musical influences and understand it completely so struggle to appreciate it.
Ill be honest. The lyrics are corny at times. The rap verse is weird. *and we get it you don't like the hard-soft hard-soft vocals tony* jeez. Im a DGD fan. But in all honesty this album is at LEAST a 3. Even by your standards Anthony. A ONE?!
SleepyBoyzGang til death
B A S E D SBG SOLDIER Clearly wasn’t. He knows his standards better than anyone.
Nahhh this is one of their best albums
I can't say i agree
they are very unique to me
and i appreciate their work
EDIT: MY OPINION HAS CHANGED, THIS ALBUM IS BAD AND I WAS IN DENIAL BECAUSE I LIKED THE SINGLE "ON THE RUN" AND WANTED TO LIKE THE WHOLE ALBUM.
Christian Vitale
Thats why other peeps have to start doing reviews instead of this dude.
He shits on so much quality music yet praises some horrible rap albums (and I have me some Hopsin and FlyLo btw)...you can just tell rock is not his cup of tea so he should just shut his damn mouth and not even bother.
You don't have to review EVERY album that comes out.
nope I'm in college actually. What about you?
:)
OIIII.. Anthony, I had no idea you didn't like Thursday or that you'd equate them with Dance Gavin Dance. Respect your opinion but, noooo.
While I do admire a reviewers attempt to critically analyze something so profoundly and give their own in depth conclusion to someone's work,
I have to play devils advocate in saying this all sounded extremely bias and personal.
We need a Mothership review.
and an Artificial Selection review
no, we really don't need to hear some dude's opinion
(please don't ask why I'm here then, just doing research for a video and wanted to see the dislike ratio)
It’s just going to be another bias opinion. He doesn’t like the style so there’s no point of him reviewing bands in this style because it’s not going to be a review based off the bands individual work
@William Magee yeah the kind that is super underground and completely detached from the type of music im talking about.
@William Magee never heard of them..
You know what they say though:
I'm the kind of person who will try everything once. That's why I'm addicted to crystal meth.
You’re emotional about this review 😢
This was actually a fantastic album.

FUCK. NO.
yea it was really good. I love it when musicians display technical skill and complex rhythms while still being incredibly catchy.
@@pyramidhead3109 yeah it is, definitely didn't deserve a 1
I appreciate that you're being very diverse with your reviews, but this really isn't your scene and I don't think you'd like anything that came out of it anyway, so I'm not really sure why you chose to even make this.
***** yet he likes La Dispute and Brand New who aren't too different from Dance Gavin Dance.
Jack Hooper They're both extremely different from DGD, imo. A few small similarities in some songs (instrumentally), but not much more than that.
Thursday? Pop-y? What the fuck? Where am I?
Downtown Battle Mountain, forever.
ohheygirlfriend Yep. Thank you. Some intelligence up in here.
I'd love to see Anthony come back to DGD and review Afterburner.
Reporting from a few weeks into the future here
So how did you like it?
Welp, hope you're happy 🙃
does he not realize the rap verse was satire dear lord
Satire ≠ good
Agreed, will did a small rap verse on acceptance speech as well. Pretty sure acceptance speech was recorded in Atlanta which is why he did it like in the spirit of where a ton of hip hop comes from. Guess they decided to do it again.

Anthony is obviously biased against this kind of music and because of those preferences, the result is gonna be controversial. With that being said, this is his channel and he can give whatever scores he wants.
(But seriously, DGD's instrumentals are insane, the score is mostly based on their vocals and songwritting.)
Fall Of Troy is better
hes not biased at all, check out his review of stage four by touche amore. he's looking for passion, and IG is lacking that. i still love the album.
@inyrui ok
My god, never have I heard a person completely not understand a band or a piece of music, in its entirety, ever. Like you just don’t get it man, fair enough, but you completely missed the trick with this one.
agreed, quite possibly the worst take on DGD i’ve ever seen😭
Lmao yeah dude sure , the music you like is just so deep and hard to understand. We just don't get it bro!
@@Bynxandethan you're a fool
@@Bynxandethan it’s not hard to understand at all. that’s why it’s so baffling that Anthony is so harsh and ignorant to it.
@@TheVesylum Dude, i hate to break it to you but music isnt that simple, so don't get so butthurt over a dude you don't even know's review
This was the first DGD album I heard back in 2018, and it’s still my favorite one.
Dude just doesn’t like post-hardcore funk-pop.
Cole Fleming
Agreed.
Just not his taste of music and its really obvious. DGD is pretty much one of the only bands in this genre I still listen to nowadays.
Agreed, this band is really talented. He was way to harsh on them.
Cole Fleming Fantano knows zero about emo, metalcore, and post-hardcore. Him not liking Circa Survive alone should set off some alarms. I hate DGD but every time he opens his mouth about those genres, I immediately disregard everything he has to say.
Dylan Griggs Circa Survive is fucking terrible, as is almost every other modern "post-hardcore" band.

I give this review a 1/10.
I like how his least favorite track is my favorite track from the album.
He bad mouthed Thursday AND Circa Survive. He has no business reviewing this genre or anything close
REDSnYELLOWS I have no idea how he doesn't like circa but he likes la dispute how df does that make any sense?!
Lol!!!!! Wtf!
Ray Kon because la dispute are great?
And I stated MY opinion about his reviews Lolol. Even still, its just very weird. It's like reviewing nothing but these kinds of bands and then randomly I review Kanye West and give it a 1 lol. Kinda silly since I know its not my thing already. Honestly would make more sense if he loved this type of stuff and still gave it a 1.
Ray Kon To be fair Wildlife era La Dispute is a much different style of Post-Hardcore
This record and Dance Gavin Dance just goes right over your head dude. You have to understand what they are doing
@marsjacobvolta he is entitled to his opinion. However when anyone disagrees with an opinion it is also their opinion.
@@itjustworks4044 Yeah but he didn't just disagree. He asserted that the reviewer "didn't understand" just because they didn't share opinions. Hence, the Ricky and Morty meme applies here. "It's just my opinion that you don't have a high enough IQ to like what I like" lol

Wow, I'm kinda upset about how badly this was reviewed.
Completely biased.
Didnt know this was a "my thoughts on" dance gavin dances new album.
Ciian Thornhiil He's not telling you to agree with him...what's the big deal it's his opinion...
As DOGSHIT as this take is, I'll be forever grateful for this introducing me to Refused. Holy SHIT that band is insanely good
I am obsessed with DGD, I couldn’t live without it, I listen to at least 3 or 4 songs of them every day, every album from them is absolutely amazing, and Melon doesn’t have any taste. He does not deserve to listen to the greatness of DGD, go back to your experimental orchestra hip-hop, you... shark dad.
Shark dad is the insult of the year.
not everyone can wrap their head around a new unique sound, watching this in 2023 definitely seems like this video didn’t age well based on the bands current success, probably a good thing people like this aren’t into DGD
I think the biggest thing to understand is the line of his description "Y'all know this is just my opinion right?" I think this album is amazing. I think it's their best yet. It's the only album from 2015 I've listened to more than ten times this year… The band said themselves it was their highest first week of sales they've ever had. Also a ton of the nights in their tour are sold out…
So the point is: Somebody likes it…
HOLY FUCK A ONE OUT OF TEN CALL THE INTERNET POLICE THE BLOOD HAS BEEN SPILLED.

I personally love Synphony Of Light for my own reasons and I argued for literally days with someone on Twitter about what constitutes art (he was being and still is a fucking idiot in that regard)
But if you're an art critic you need to stand at the side and find the empathy to understand why people like this shit.
Almost as whiny as Tillian’s neutered vocals
People, guess what?... It's just his opinion.
Personally I absolutely love this album, but everyone's entitled to their own opinion, right?
Ye, opinions and entitlement will be the number one thing people will use.
Guy: I don’t like dis.
Douchebag: WHAT?!? REEEEEEEE
"Death of the Strawberry" is the last song of "The Strawberry Swisher" series, DGD had a few series reacurring through their albums and you can't just hate on the title sounding nonsensical when it's relating to something.
Also, you took lyrics completely out of the song context, true, DGD was never about lyrics (maybe a little on the self titled and "Happiness" albums) vocalists rather use their voices as instruments but still, you can't just pick some lyrics that describe something or are building up the atmosphere or situation
"Some melodic guitar thrown in there" sounds just wrong if we consider Will Swan's guitar skills
With this album DGD wanted to open up for audience with their more poppy song structure and they did it while including a little bit of something from their previous works
Damn, even the instrumental proficiency alone are warrants at least a light 3
Let's be real, Mr. Fantano just doesnt like this genre, he likes hardcore, punk, strange music like Death Grips. While defining the "post-hardcore" term he's referring to the bands of distant past while the whole genre evolved and branched out into something new
There are no factors for such harsh rating.
Post-hardcore has a wide range spectrum of bands and sounds and sometimes bands labeled under the same genre may not fall into the one's taste so what is the point of reviewing something that you're not fan of and your opinion most likely will be subjective (I'm kinda surprised he never liked DGD if he liked The Fall Of Troy because these two band often go hand in hand in terms of style)
But yes, sorry, I apologise for this a little bit hate fueled, goofy sounding comment (as english isn't my first language) but this review is just inexplicably harsh.
Transcedant
It takes less then 30 minutes to research up some bands and name drop them for "Street cred."
***** So you're claiming that he namedropped bands he liked for street cred? The burden of proof is on you to confirm that, good luck.

5SOS & Minor Threat collab confirmed
It seems that everyone in the comments who glorifies Death Grips decided to hate DGD just because Anthony does. This album isn't their best but it's far from a 1/10.
Not talking down to anyone, just pointing out the flaws of this comment section. What's wrong with The Alan Parsons Project?
This is an old ass comment, but I just wanted to say THANK YOU. It seems that most of Anthony's fans just take all of his opinions as their own and never think for themselves. If Anthony says it's a 1, so does everybody else and they'll get butthurt when someone gives their own non-brainwashed opinion. Thank you again, and sorry you had to read my rant, felt like it needed to be said.
Evan Brown Haha thanks. I'm glad someone agrees with me. Some people just can't form their own opinion so they eat up everything Anthony says.
You are the physical embodiment of the mindset of Fantano's fans. If you wanna talk about bad lyrics go listen to Death Grips lol.
