The line isn't very clear and I definitely agree- cops die in every saw film basically. What I think he's trying to say is "Jigsaw didn't have it out for cops *specifically*." Anyone who Kramer didn't think appreciated thier life or pissed him off in one way or another (because lbr some reasons ppl got tested were tenuous at best) got slung into a torture trap. If that person was a cop, then a cop went into a torture trap. But when he was following his own ethos that he spoke about so much (and there was a fair amount of time he was just a straight up hypocrite)- he wasn't targeting cops just *because they were cops*. This copycat was exclusively going after ""dirty cops"", that was their whole deal. I think that *that* is what they were trying to say- albeit communicating it rather poorly.
It had such a good premise - put Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson in a “Saw” film and have them act like you would expect. This was one of the rare movies that ended and I think I said “you gotta be fucking kidding me” when the credits began to roll. There was a halfway decent attempt at including BLM/cops commentary in there, but it didn’t entirely work either. Really disappointing, there could have been a great movie in this but it just felt like such a limp attempt where the premise deserved a better film.
@@CHRISPYakaKON I heard it was proposed to be a trilogy, but dunno if that will still happen or not. I was so frustrated by the ending (first of all, I dunno why Rock’s character didn’t just play along and say he was gonna do what he was being asked to do, even if he didn’t plan to follow through with it). And then the abrupt finish really sullied everything that came before it. I think I liked what they were TRYING to do with it, but I don’t think they really succeeded at it. I’d watch a sequel to it still, but I wish they did more with what they had in Spiral itself, instead of trying to build a new franchise out of it.
Yea I watched it last night and you can tell Chris Rock was having the time of his life doing this movie. I liked that it was kinda flashy amd cheesy. I enjoyed it.
They could have made this movie infinitely better if they hadn't revealed who Spiral was so early. Firstly, make it so the partner is missing and is being presented as bait for Zeke by Spiral rather than the blatantly fake death that was in the film. When Zeke walks into that room to confront Spiral after his old partner died, it should have been a TV giving a similar speech about ending corruption before he goes into the room with his dad and the new partner in traps. So he has to choose - save his father and the corrupt system, or save his idealistic partner and start things anew. He picks his dad, but that's the trap, and then his dad is killed by the other cops while Spiral makes a getaway in the elevator, having planted evidence that Zeke was Spiral, setting up a sequel where he's fighting for his innocence. It would have hit all the same beats but revealing Spiral at the last second rather than 10 minutes before would have given us that wham moment we expect from Saw. And Chris Rock was bad. He's an amazing comedic actor but just bad in this. The stupid squinting constipated face whenever he was trying to be serious, and the scene where his old partner murdered that guy looked like it was from a skit show.
I heard that The Village was going to get an R rating because you could hear the main character getting stabbed in one scene so they took the audio of the stab out and got a PG-13 rating. The MPAA is so weird about their ratings.
I really wish it wasn't connected to The Saw. But other than that it's not that bad. Except for the most obvious twist in the recent years. Also "You Ain't Hard" goes too damn hard
The movie was meh for me because I view Chris Rock in more of a comedian light, like I couldn't take the movie seriously enough to focus on it at all. In the end it wasn't anything for me to recommend, just something to say "Yeah I watched it".
The second interaction w the character I yelled at the screen “THEY DID IT” & unfortunately as usual I was correct. It’s difficult for me not to guess this kinda stuff way too early. The very very few times. I actually get a truly unexpected twist I get so excited bc it just doesn’t happen anymore. 😔😔 but I did enjoy Chris Rock & of course SLJ…..they are always awesome in anything they do.
This movie was a breath of fresh air for the series. I had not felt so angry that the antagonist wins since the first saw movie. While the other movies (2-8) had twists they weren’t all that enjoyable. Only good things about the other movies we’re the traps.
Forgetting the fact that Tobin Bell is way too old to play a younger version of John, he WAS the reason these films worked. If Jigsaw was played by a different actor you likely wouldn't have had a franchise beyond #1 and #2. A younger Kramer would have big shoes to fill.
And blackouts add to the crime. My uncle had a store in South Central Los Angeles and he would always get his shotgun out when the blackouts hit. But it was also the early 90s LA which was like living in the real life Purge every blackout.
With the BLM movement and everything going on…I believe the ending could’ve been WAY better and they could’ve gone so many other directions than a shoot out caused by the police…I know it was a setup and all but I saw this at the Drive-In theatre and literally everyone drove off the lot so fast when the credits began 🤣 we were all mad as hell 🤣🤣🤣
I enjoyed Chris Rock in a more serious role and Samuel Jackson delivers as usual. The death scenes made my skin crawl and I wasn't surprised to find out who the killer was all along. I'd give the movie a C+. " Wanna play a game?"
it's not a bad movie if it wasn't connected to saw or anything, y'know? if it wasn't in the line of the greatest pieces of film ... it would be a banger film to me
I hate this film. I tried watching it twice and turned it off both times (and I had spent money to rent it both times). I seriously thought I was being punked. The opening sequence literally made me think, "Is this supposed to be a movie within a movie? This can't be the real film. Someone is going to yell 'cut' at any moment." I swear to God, that's honestly what I thought. The cast was great but the writing was bad and the acting was wooden (probably because the dialogue was so unnatural). I was just bored and confused. (Confused about how it could turn out so bad when it had so much potential.)
I’m glad you brought up his facial expressions they felt very forced and even his walk, I personally don’t enjoy him in more serious roles like this. It’s like having Michael Cera play shaft!
I love this movie 😂 I’m a big Saw fan so obviously there’s gonna be some bias but I like the facts that they switched it up. Because people complain if they do or don’t
1:16 huh…this is one of those stories that will make me go “Yes, these people make business decisions. how is it that they don’t fail more? I don’t know.”
Chris was at his best in the film in that one sequence when he and his new partner were talking about the hurdles of marriage life as a cop. He felt the most natural there. Any other time, he was really straining. Geez, those sequences when he's raising his voice almost comes off more comical because he is just so stilted when doing that..... Will give the movie this much: this is a much better idea for the franchise than doing some Kramer Prequel or trying to get another person to legit take up the legacy.
It was a hairpin actually, not the cuff's key. Though, it intrigues me if Shenk really wanted Zeke to saw his hand off or anticipated the hairpin as per his partner's cunning intuition.
