1950's Swedish Military Trailer acquired, but can I save it?

  • This was my Friends trailer for many years but he became unable to use it anymore and we have since lost him. Whist he was still kicking I purchased it because I now can use it behind my small Volvo tractor on all terrains. However it has been left outside for so long that the harsh weather and forest conditions means it has rotted out.
    Recorded Late August and late October 2023, it is currently awaiting the end of winter when I will renew the steel paint work and all timbers to put it back to use.
    Thank you.

    If... just if, I was a seer of things, my intuition would suggest one of the following options...
    1 - you are missing the warmth of summer so much that you had to go and have a look-see at some summer fun!
    2 - as a small boy, you loved wetting others with the hosepipe and equally loved jumping in puddles
    3 - Simon just can't resist a project... so... we await the next episode!
    Happy days Simon... stay well up there in the white north!!

    What a shame that is Simon, it is in good condition otherwise. If it was mine and I needed to use it, I would get some 1/4 inch plate and tack weld it to the frame. I am not trying to teach an old dog new tricks.

    Too bad that the timbers were rotten.. a lot of work sawing new decking, but the trailer in itself should be pretty solid with regards to the steel and axle. As you said, treated pine decking should last a small lifetime..used engine oil is perfect for the task, not the most eco friendly, but it's cheap and it works👍 Hope to see the old trailer in use some day🥲 All the best buddy.. we're bracing ourselves for the storm about to hit us in a couple of hours. It's supposed to blow up to 55 m/sek(180 ft/sek) , almost 200 km pr hr or123 mph.. I'd guess the clothes would dry pretty fast if it wasn't for all the rain🤪

    • @arctic-rebel
      @arctic-rebel  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Sounds like you need to hang on for a while, those conditions are very dangerous buddy so I wish you well and safe. I was also thinking about used oil, I serviced both tractor last summer as you know so maybe use that. With the sawmill it is not much work to get the boards I need at all. You know when you have the tools most jobs become skill based and not brute force based and we like that. Keep your head down.

    • @thenorthener6855
      @thenorthener6855 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A little update on the storm... Wind gusts up to 57 m/sek, rain and hailstorms all through the night, the power went out at 00.10 last night and came back on 1/2 an hour ago. Fortunately no major damage here, but it has been pretty terrible further north and out on the coastal regions. It is quite high winds with gusts peaking at 43m/sek, but it's supposed to calm down later today. All in all we are good, nothing we are not used to 🌬️🙂

    Its worith a total rebuild but i think you getting up on the trailer and washing it more is a waste of time better served taking all the wood off then wash the frame , Since your taking the wood off anyways looking forward to the rebuild of the trailer .

    • @arctic-rebel
      @arctic-rebel  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Agreed, how ever I initially thought I would only need to change some of the deck and cleaning it would reveal how many boards were required. Now we all know, all of them. I have a cutting list.

    Have you ever thought of trying to obtain some old pipe large enough to make your own pressure vessel? If you could luck upon it some day you could treat your own lumber, albeit one or two sticks at a time. Just a thought.

      @matthewnasci2646 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@arctic-rebel Actually Simon I surely wouldn't use harmful chemicals, and I hadn't considered that you would either. I didn't specify that my thought was for using waste oil, hydraulic/transmission, fluid, diesel, whatever and under pressure would impregnate the wood better than simply painting it on. I am anticipating your solution to the trailer when or if you post it.

    • @arctic-rebel
      @arctic-rebel  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Robert, When I started working the forest for Tomas that trailer is all we had and we used it for hauling logs on the back of his tractor. That was the Volvo 850 I think I have done a few video's on that tractor. I know it will take the weight we have had that very well loaded in the past.

      Hi Terry, we don,t have any hardwood here, we Pine,Fir or Birch. A good pine bed impregnated will give it another 50 years here no problem. The most important thing with a bed like this is to keep it dry and aired when not in use. Our climate is very dry.

    Hello Simon. Kept waiting on you to fire up the chainsaw and cut the deck boards down the middle of the trailer to ease some pain. Warm weather arrives, you'll have her looking like a brand new trailer. Will you be using fir for the boards?
    Im curious to whether you have been out cutting wood much this winter? Im sure you still have snow pack?
    We've warmed up here with highs in the 40's for the next 7 days atleast. Take care and God bless. Thanks for sharing.

      Hi Micheal, I will be using fir io pine for the boards. What is in there is pine so may just put that back in. I have not been out cutting yet, I am really getting ready though but the wind is to strong right not. We are still very much in winter and should be for months yet. We have not reached the coldest part of winter. Be safe my friend.
