As a foreigner, I tried to watch many Bollywood movies and Tamil movies. Now, I personally think that they both have beautiful backgrounds, songs and actors. However, I think that Tamil movies sound a bit less fake.... I was looking for movies in which I can see how India is and how Indians are, physically AND mentally too. In Bollywood, it often doesn't represent how it is in real life. Many Indian friends told me not to be referred to Bollywood movies to have a proper idea of your country.
Tamil movies are deeper and more realistic. All is not only based on the look, and I have been really surprised of how great some Tamil actors can be. I have now watched almost all Dhanush's movies and some others, and Tamil movies are officially the greatest discovery I have ever made.

Morgane Pan .. tamil movies too generate a lot of crap..Lot of hero worship..But have a fair amount of realistic ""low budget" movies.. but they still worship fair skin girls as heroines..
kanda saravanan I have noticed that many actors (especially actresses) from Tamil movies are fair skinned despite the reality in Tamil Nadu. Still the movies in general stay for me a bit more realistic with skin color than in Bollywood. I know that in the North, people are less darker skinned, but sometimes I feel like they just try not to show a few part of North India in which Indians can also b darker than in the movies.

I, too, don't understand Tamil. But the magic of ARR (and dhanush) doesn't need words to convey. Also, I read the translation and found it very similar to "Abhi na jao chhodkar" by Rafi Saab. This theme always gives the most wonderful songs. Do hear it.
