She should have won an Oscar long ago, she is one of our best dramatic living actresses hands down, but she has not had the opportunity with meaty, diverse, dramatic film roles. I’m glad she is getting to kick butt on TV but I want to see her in more films, and in roles that center on her as the lead. Definitely do Debra Winger as the Elusive Oscar. I feel like her would be interesting story. Both politics, her not playing the HOLLYWOOD game & her "reputation" & her turning down Oscar nominated & winning roles.
While your 4 reasons for Holly Hunter winning certainly played a role, the 5th reason, her whiteness, should not be ignored. The fact that *nowadays* the demographic of the Academy is only 16% people of color (2019, only 8% in 2015) and must have been much lower if existent at all in the 90s, clearly plays a role in the dismissal of Black actors' and actresses' performances (and the complete omitting of Waiting to Exhale). The fact that Angela has mostly been recognized by the NAACP awards, a Black institution, is no coincidence. As you have said, she's been deserving of multiple Oscars and Emmys (and honestly all the other awards too) throughout her career and I sincerely hope she still gets her well-deserved and well-overdue flowers next year and in the years to come. But we should also never forget who actually decides who is supposedly worthy of awards recognition because that continues to be, as Angela mentioned herself, white men and she is way above their opinions and lack of appreciation for her talent.
Did you see she’s going to receive an Honorary Oscar in November? Definitely a comfort prize but knowing her professionalism and elegance I’m sure she will accept it with grace
Thank you for this! I remember rewinding her Waiting to Exhale fire scene over and over again as a kid. It was unlike anything I've seen. Apparently the scene was improvised. She's a legend
Another awesome video! To be honest I never thought Chadwick Boseman or Angela Bassett would get nominated in Black Panther, I did think Michael B. Jordan was a very strong contender, though. However, back to Angela, if the trailer is any indication of what she's going to bring in Black Panther Wakanda Forever, she's looking good already. Fingers crossed! She deserves all the recognition. I recently rewatched What’s love got to do with it after Tina Turner passed away and I have to say - Bassett is phenomenal and should have won. But I was thinking about Laurence Fishburne that same year. He had no chance in the lead actor category- Hanks beating Neeson was hard enough, but could he have gone in supporting? That year it was incredibly stacked in supporting actor, but the winner was actually a bit underwhelming. Could LF been there and won? Or maybe it should have been Ralph Feinnes? Fishburne was so great and that is his only Oscar nom. Such a tough year to be in.
Hey, even if that scene is her only significant scene in the entire movie; if Judi Dench and Beatrice Straight could do it, then I think Angela may very well get the win, and not just the nomination 🤞🏼 And for what likely will be a far more powerful monologue at that.
Thank you for this very beautiful tribute to this phenomenal talent. She's always luminous in every role. No shade towards Halle, but I had no idea that she auditioned for 'What's Love Got To Do With It?' Interesting. Would love to see her win an Oscar, but if by chance she doesn't, that elusive award doesn't take away from her extraordinary legacy in film and television. Carry on. New follower. Peace.
Here's an idea for a future video: Top 10 Comic Book roles that deserved an Oscar nomination!! Here's a list of possible candidates: Michael B. Jordan, Hugh Jackman, Robert Downey Jr., Elizabeth Olsen, Willem Dafoe, Patrick Stewart, etc.
I watched the trailer. I'm sorry her monologe was nothing special(that's just me I hate superhero films) but I'm glad people keep talking about her greatness. She deserves so much more awards and roles!
Mark my words: She will win Oscar this year. Her narrative is so strong with even a stronger performance in a Marvel movie. Her GG win is a good campaign throughout the Big 5 major awards
1993 is a similar situation to 1954, where people judged who should've won retrospectively. While the reality in those particular years, the winners are quite clear cut. Aside from sweeping the precusors, Hunter also won Cannes Best Actress. I think partly because Angela Bassett is enjoying a career resurgence with Black Panther and the racial bias conversation has been hot recently (justifiably) while Holly Hunter is largely forgotten today.
Damn I truly wish this was a tie for holly hunter and Angela Bassett that would’ve been awesome I also think Angela should’ve been a double nominee for the 1996 Oscar’s for waiting to exhale and stranger days, but I hope Angela can get her second Oscar nomination and first win for best supporting actress for the black panther sequel if both the film and her performance end up being great and Disney does a great for your consideration campaign especially considering the recent films that been getting raved at the recent festivals it look like this year might be one of the most competitive years for the best supporting actress category
Love the video Brian! I'm such a huge Basset fan. I've never seen the piano, but I dont think it has lasting cultural impact like Whats Love, so Angela should have won. Personally, I'm not banking on her winning for Black Panther. Frankly, I don't believe that most performances in super hero films can compete with the overall spectacle of those films, nor are they meant to. The closet we've come is of course Heath Ledger as Joker, Michael B in Black Panther 1 and controversially, Robert Pattinson in The Batman. Ultimately, I feel academy voters should look for more person driven performances when making decisions. My fantasy is that Angela and her younger lookalike Keke Palmer both win an Oscar for a mother daughter film together! Thanks for the channel and regular uploads. Great stuff!
@Brandi Giles The Academy often gets it wrong, especially in the case of Angela Bassett. While I like Holly Hunter and many of her performances, The Piano didn't move me all that much...she turned in better performances in Broadcast News and Thirteen. When I see Oscar winners such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Emma Stone, Helen Hunt, Halle Berry, Sandra Bullock (sorry Brian...lol) and the highly overrated Jennifer Lawrence (I'm sure more will come to mind if given the time), it is mindboggling Angela Bassett hasn't won an Oscar or, at the very least, received more nominations. Bassett's small role in Boyz in the Hood was incredibly moving and powerful, and I would argue worthy of a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination.
I hope she gets a chance to wear the mantle or have at least some small fight scene in BP2, she would show that she's not only a power house drama actress, but also she gets finer with age and can be and action star
This is why we should vote in each category when it comes to the Oscars. They will nominate the actors while we vote on who should win. If this had happen then people like Angela, Glenn, Amy, and so on would have many Oscars. I’m sure everyone would agree with me!
Bassett is one of our GREAT actresses--she simply hasn't had the roles and I hope that will change! She should have won for WHAT'S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT and I remember being pissed about the way they dissed her--when they showed clips of all the nominees, all they showed was Bassett lip syncing in one of the musical numbers--you could see that they were not taking her seriously. Interestingly, Marion Cotillard, as PIAF, also lip synced but won Oscar. It's a shame how Bassett was passed over.
The academy does not like to see powerful people of color especially in roles of royalty. Mrs. Angela Bassett played a Queen of an advanced powerful continent and you know who hates to see that. It is racism. They want to see people of color in stereotypical roles and award that to send the message that that is how they see us and in their eyes we cannot be anything more. If Mrs. Angela Bassett won the Oscar it would send a message that people of color can be royalty and lead a great nation and you know who does not want that to happen.
Angela Bassett will definitely score her second Oscar nomination for Wakanda Forever and I believe she will win FINALLY. I myself would love to see Angela Bassett Denzel Washington and Halle Berry do the remake of DEATH BECOMES HER.
The real reason Angela Basset lost is because the producers released it the same year as Holly Hunters incredible performance. As great as Angelas performance was . Holly's performances is a tour de force. not only Holly had to "look sad" she had to play piano, learn sign and needed to imitate a mute and mimic the pain of losing a finger.
@@stelios2506 well Angela had more to learn and less time. Plus this was only her third film but first leading role. The legendary actress work speaks for itself. Where is the piano and hunter today??! No shade just some performances get an award and others are timeless which is even more remarkable.
She 100% deserved an Emmy for her work on AHS. It’s such a shame that the best supporting actress category was so stacked the year coven was nominated. Frances Conroy and Kathy Bates were also obviously excellent and also deserved to win but I really would’ve loved a win for Angela
I saw Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Angela Bassett's performance was really incredible. When it comes to Oscar recognition, Black Women often get sidelined and if they're nominated, they will be nominated for playing slaves, maids, bad mothers, and any negative role out there. It will be historic if she's nominated but these trophies don't matter anymore, I just wanna see black actresses getting humane roles just like their white colleagues do. Anyway, nice video man.
I am thinking of the precedent that Heath Ledger won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for portraying the Joker in The Dark Knight, a comic book movie. Black Panther is also a comic book movie. However, Academy recognizing the previous film and her character rising above may put her at an Oscar nomination again. It is quite possible that she might finally win one. She deserved one for What's Love Got To Do With It? and Malcolm X tbh, and her filmography is stellar throughout. We'll see. If Sheryl Lee Ralph can win an Emmy, Angela can win an Oscar.
What can I say... :) Bassett in particular arguably puts her career-best performance in the role, with incredibly raw emotion packed into her delivery of each line of the script. - Sheraz Farooqi, Cinema Debate; Bassett gives one of the best performances in the Marvel universe so far. - Ross Bonaime, Collider; Bassett also has to be on the shortlist for Best Supporting Actress nominees. The script sets her up for some powerful moments that Bassett crushes with the kind of emotion to put lumps in throats. - Jeffrey Lyles, Lyles’ Movie Files Love it!
When I was a kid, I use to think Angela was the real tina Turner.sge didn't do the singing on what's love got to do with it. It was tina herself who did the singing. She was good on America horror story, she should have won for coven. she will eventually win an honorary oscar
In the superb 'Waiting to Exhale', Angela is doubly terrific at being the truly main character AND very much a team member in the four-woman main ensemble.
So I was thinking the same thing when I saw the trailer that she could be nominated from her performance off the trailer. I also feel Olsen could be nominated as well. I feel the female actresses could help marvel get nominations
I absolutely love Anglia Bassett! Such a great actress! I love everything she is in. EVERYTHING! Her acting is superb. She should have won Oscars for 95% of her movie roles. Also, her role in AHS should have won Emmy
I like Angela in 9-1-1 too! Glad to see there is another 9-1-1 fanatic here. Have you heard she is receiving an Honorary Academy Award? I say it's about time and deserving!
Awards do not always go to the most deserving: they are about politics as much as they are about talent & performances. But Angela will get her much deserved Oscar someday, I believe. 😊
I feel like her performance in Black Panther II will be like Michael B Jordan´s performance in the original: Impressive and would deserve too get Marvel their first Oscar nom in an acting category
Pauline collins story about Shirley Valentine at the oscars was just unbelievable. she was household name in the UK on tv in the 1980s and willy russell wrote the role for her and I think she debuted the role in liverpool playhouse, it went to the westend, where it cemented her reputation as a first rate actress. Bill kenwright who as uk theatre impresario and had connections in Hollywood after the success of Educating rita, put together a deal and Shirley Valentine went into production, it was a huge success in the USa and pauline collins created a lot of oscar Buzz. sure enough when the oscars were revealed Pauline collins name was in the Mix. and then one week to go her agent phoned her up and poured a massive bucket of cold water all over her, by saying that she would win, you will have a nice evening her agent said but you wont win, her agent told her this repeatedly in the run up to the event and a day before her agent would not return her calls, at the event, all eyes were on her and the name on the envelope wasnt her and she never worked in hollywood again. its a great film, and Pauline collins is great in it and she makes the character come alive. Angela Bassett does the same as tina turner but she may also have had issues with the academy that nobody knows about. could be political. she is a very strong female poc and that may scare people in the clip she it took spike lee ages to win an oscar for a politically topical film. and he passionately disliked white people that for long he didnt go to the oscars untill he won for black Klannsman
She’s an amazing actress. What’s Love Got to do With It is fantastic and she gave an excellent performance. Holly Hunter was fantastic in The Piano and that was a year I think either would have been deserving and while Hunter won the Academy Award, I feel as though Bassett should have won as well. But ties really don’t happen with acting anymore, which is a shame sometimes as occasionally there are two performances that are so good that it seems like two people deserve the award, yet one will obviously walk away with it and the other goes home empty. It’s also surprising she’s only been nominated once despite being fantastic in many other films. Thanks for the video Brian, keep up the great work!
Angela's is right her role required significantly more than Holly's. But for whatever reason it connected with the demographic that had the largest power to award holly. the 90s seem to like those sappy dramas, like the English patient. I don't think the piano holds up nearly as well as what's love got to do with it after all these years.
@@raaid22 Perhaps as films, yeah. What’s Love Got to do With It holds up better than The Piano. Performances though, I think both Hunter and Bassett did a great job. Still a shame that Bassett has never gotten another Oscar nomination after this film.
@@Jared_Wignall they both did a great job, but performance wise Angela's still has impact. People quote her performance to this day. Holly hunters performance is largely forgotten like most award winning performances in the cultural conscientiousness.
It would be interesting if Angela Bassett earned her second Oscar nomination for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever because it would be the first time ever that an actor or actress has been nominated for their performance in a Marvel movie at the Academy Awards. I'm confident that that would make the shows ratings skyrocket.
She definitely should’ve won in 1994. That Tina Turner performance was so incredible and has had such a long lasting cultural impact. I still tear up during the scene where she runs for her life through traffic to escape Ike and asks the kind hotel manager for a room to stay in 🥺

That year it was incredibly stacked in supporting actor, but the winner was actually a bit underwhelming. Could LF been there and won? Or maybe it should have been Ralph Feinnes? Fishburne was so great and that is his only Oscar nom. Such a tough year to be in.
Thanks for watching!
I’m in Tears right now I been waiting for this
Yay!!
Hey, even if that scene is her only significant scene in the entire movie; if Judi Dench and Beatrice Straight could do it, then I think Angela may very well get the win, and not just the nomination 🤞🏼 And for what likely will be a far more powerful monologue at that.
Especially Dench!
Agreed! Fingers crossed!
In my mind Angela Bassett won for "What's Love Got To Do With IT'. She's a great actress and I'm sure her day will come.
Yes!
Peace.
Beautifully said! Thanks for watching.
Here's an idea for a future video: Top 10 Comic Book roles that deserved an Oscar nomination!! Here's a list of possible candidates:
Michael B. Jordan, Hugh Jackman, Robert Downey Jr., Elizabeth Olsen, Willem Dafoe, Patrick Stewart, etc.
Great idea!
I also feel like those actors have enough dramatic roles as well that they should have won Oscars already!!
I watched the trailer. I'm sorry her monologe was nothing special(that's just me I hate superhero films) but I'm glad people keep talking about her greatness. She deserves so much more awards and roles!
Thanks for watching!
Mark my words: She will win Oscar this year. Her narrative is so strong with even a stronger performance in a Marvel movie. Her GG win is a good campaign throughout the Big 5 major awards
Yes!!
2 words-Deidre Bobeidre. 🤮
But she didn’t!
Feeling good about her chances at a second Oscar nomination!
my only solace in her not winning for best supporting is that she deserves to get a best actress win!
Would love to see her win someday!
Yes, it will! Thanks for watching!
Thanks, Brandi, your comment made my day! You’re the best!
I hope she gets a chance to wear the mantle or have at least some small fight scene in BP2, she would show that she's not only a power house drama actress, but also she gets finer with age and can be and action star
Would be great!
This is why we should vote in each category when it comes to the Oscars. They will nominate the actors while we vote on who should win. If this had happen then people like Angela, Glenn, Amy, and so on would have many Oscars. I’m sure everyone would agree with me!
Thanks for watching!
I don’t. The Oscars is about being honored by your peers. Which is totally different than being honored by your fans.
She truly is one of the best actresses in the business right now. Local (St. Petersburg, FL) girl done good!
Love Angela so much!
Love her. She should’ve won for What’s love got to do with it!
Would’ve been a great win!
No. Holly hunter deserved that oscar
Thank you for making this video. It's heartbreaking. Strange Days is an awesome film. I highly recommend checking it out.
Thanks for watching! Yes, I adore Strange Days!
I really enjoy these. I don't know if you honor requests, but if a Sigourney Weaver and the Elusive Oscar is made, I would love it.😊
Yes, the Weaver Elusive Oscar video is coming in a few weeks. Stay tuned!
Angela Bassett will definitely score her second Oscar nomination for Wakanda Forever and I believe she will win FINALLY. I myself would love to see Angela Bassett Denzel Washington and Halle Berry do the remake of DEATH BECOMES HER.
Yes, love that!
17:32 where’d you get this sag awards clip?
Most of the full SAG ceremonies are on TH-cam.
That woman is an absolute legend 💖🙌🏼
Agreed!!
There is not ome flaw in her talent this women deserves all the damn awards how tf does she not have an Oscar.
I know!! She’s amazing!
Yep, very true!
Exactly ! Angela's comment about Holly Hunter's performance is diminishing
Same here!
Thank you so much!
Would be amazing!!
She’s the greatest in my opinion. I need her and viola to link up and create a masterpiece.
That’d be awesome!
My favorite actress of all time!
Yay!!
Just saw the film, she’s incredible in it!
I’ve had very few times to associate with Yale actors, but I’m glad I had that moment.
Yay!
When I was a kid, I use to think Angela was the real tina Turner.sge didn't do the singing on what's love got to do with it. It was tina herself who did the singing. She was good on America horror story, she should have won for coven. she will eventually win an honorary oscar
Yes!
In the superb 'Waiting to Exhale', Angela is doubly terrific at being the truly main character AND very much a team member in the four-woman main ensemble.
The thing about Angela Basset is that the dominates the screen whenever shez on There!
Absolutely!! I’ll watch her in anything!
She better get an Oscar!!
Would love that!
So I was thinking the same thing when I saw the trailer that she could be nominated from her performance off the trailer. I also feel Olsen could be nominated as well. I feel the female actresses could help marvel get nominations
Would be awesome!
She should have two Oscars prior. What's Love, Waiting to Exhale. And a nom for Stella.
Agreed!
I absolutely love Anglia Bassett! Such a great actress! I love everything she is in. EVERYTHING! Her acting is superb. She should have won Oscars for 95% of her movie roles. Also, her role in AHS should have won Emmy
Should have been nominated for best supporting actress for Malcolm X. She is so underrated.
Agreed!
I like Angela in 9-1-1 too! Glad to see there is another 9-1-1 fanatic here. Have you heard she is receiving an Honorary Academy Award? I say it's about time and deserving!
The fact that she has none and Meryl has like 25 is insane
Hope Bassett wins an Oscar soon!
Awards do not always go to the most deserving: they are about politics as much as they are about talent & performances.
But Angela will get her much deserved Oscar someday, I believe. 😊
Fingers crossed!
But it has facts and tips to get
She DESERVED IT for " WLGTDI". When she's on screen and she gives you those looks before her speech it goes 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I feel like her performance in Black Panther II will be like Michael B Jordan´s performance in the original: Impressive and would deserve too get Marvel their first Oscar nom in an acting category
Here’s hoping!
Ooh, could you pretty please do these on Richard Gere and Dennis Quaid?!
Good ideas!
@@TheAwardsContender and Peter O'Toole
Thank you, Jared!!
She’s long overdue!
Angela Bassett should've won an Oscar a long time ago
Agreed!
SHE’S GETTING HER OSCAR NEXT YEAR YES SIS!!!
YES, would be monumental!
Angela Bassett= Divine Skin!
Love her!
She was offered Monster's Ball but turned it down. That role was lined up to her an Oscar.
Yes! Could’ve had a segment on this.
She definitely should’ve won in 1994. That Tina Turner performance was so incredible and has had such a long lasting cultural impact. I still tear up during the scene where she runs for her life through traffic to escape Ike and asks the kind hotel manager for a room to stay in 🥺
Yes, I love that scene too!
Well we are getting closer to awards season and she has got the GG nom and the CC nom, so keeping everything crossed she can get a SAG nom and then hopefully the Oscar Nom 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞
Yes!! Crossing my fingers she gets an Oscar nom!
She really does look like Tina Turner. Man that's wild! When you see them side by side.
Here after she won GG ☺️☺️☺️
Yes!! Was so happy to see her win!
Why she never won an Oscar? As long as she is alive, she can still win.
I’m crossing my fingers it happens!
She was born in 1958. wth she looks sooo young.
She is stunningly gorgeous at any age!
Same as Hunter
I think Holly Hunter was the rigth winner for The Piano in 1994 Academy Awards, but I'd admitted that Angela Bassett was great in What's love got to do with it
Yes, both performances are great, but Bassett’s turn is an all-timer!
"Right... RIGHT?" I've never felt that this intensely.
Haha, thanks for watching!
Well she did get an Honorary Oscar at the Governor’s Awards early in 2024 (because it was going to happen in late 2023 but the strike happen in Hollywood cause to delay)
Well you was right on this one sir. Currently, she is Oscar nominated.
Yes, I called it from 12 seconds of a trailer haha!
@@TheAwardsContender you’re a prophet, I hope she wins!
