This is such excellent counsel. We need to guard against surrounding ourselves with an echo chamber of homogeneity, wrestling with different perspectives and approaches is healthy, not just for the preacher but for his congregation.

Once one understands the doctrinal differences between say, Lewis, and Edwards, and Whitfield, and (say) Fulton J Sheen, you will see how really close they are, and how much you can learn from their disparate theologies (even though you cannot agree with all of them at once on everything). You will become nuanced and fair and will learn what mattered to them.

Who is looking up to you Piper? I’m not sure the gospel you and Keller preach is Christ crucified? Stop hanging on to your past and remember Paul said we run the race. Don’t be mistaken, the race ain’t over and if the world comes in and chokes you out with the social gospel, you too will be grieved. We want preachers who preach the word, not mans word. That seems to be lost.
I'm sure your question was rhetorical, but I'm happy to stick my hand up and say I look up to Piper. He's had a long and fruitful ministry, he hasn't been ensnared by money or fame, he preaches repentance with real meat on the bones (what you call social gospel I call a specific call to repentance), and he always seems to be growing in his love for Christ. I hope I'm running as well as him at his age.

If not, look it up. Explaining his past in a historical perspective, I agree. That is why we run the race, to show ourselves approved. They are not just pastors anymore. They are celebrities and use their own books to influence a generation. Men are sinful, completely and utterly sinful, I agree in the call to repentance, but that is not what I mean by social gospel. That is how he started the video off, by framing the question they were answering as talking to the people who look up to them. I have learned from many different people and it seems that there are preachers who hold onto their works. I listened to Ravi for years and Jesus made it useful to me, but should I hold Ravi in high regard or Jesus? My comments were based on recent comments from both men. As long as Jesus receives the Glory, Amen. There is a lot of nuance on the pride of fame. Even the Puritans killed Baptist so the criticism must be warranted. Nothing is said in anger but trying to keep Christ as the finisher of faith.
A problem with the GC is its Protestant, Reformed orientation. It colors all the videos it puts out, but then every denomination comes with its own cultural baggage, which generally speaking, every denomination is quite blind to. The GC is no different.
