    Only the fundamentals of mathematics are really needed. I was terrible at math in high school because I had no interest but as I went back to school when I was older to study cyber security I actually enjoyed it also I had been working in banking for years so I became more comfortable with numbers as I got older. I wouldn't let the mathematics side of things put you off going after a career in cyber security, you got this!

      tfw you realize you learn all those math back in high school wasn't because life demands it, but because it order to get your dream job, you gotta take those hellish degrees that contains scary ass math modules.
      industry might not really make you use a lot of what you learn in math, but the degree or whatever course you're taking (certificate, polytechnic, etc) will require you to pass all those math tests and exams😅
      One of my friends is a culinary student and even that requires them to take a math module (which im not sure what was it). Feels like no matter what profession you're pursuing, you can never escape math.
      No pass no dream job. Life is pain.

    Rather than a "filter" I'd look at those math classes required as a way to exercise your mind to become better in problem solving. Math is just a language to make those exercises abstract enough to be able to reuse skills gained in different applications.

    • @collinsinfosec
      @collinsinfosec  3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Good perspective. We can always benefit from exercising the mind. Especially in a university setting, where you have to take these classes before getting into major-specific classes.

      can I ask exactly what your degree was/is in? im taking CompSci w/a focus on security so im wondering if at some point we'll tackle encryption. Im only 6 months in so I may be a little early but I would love to learn cryptography. Closet thing with math we've done is things like subnetting, conversion stuff like that but no cryptography.

  • @cyberjo6086
    @cyberjo6086 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Well, it sort of depends. If you want to do research in cryptography you certainly need a lot of abstract algebra and number theory. Both of which require rigorous knowledge in mathematical proofs.

  • @civiprepper
    @civiprepper 3 ปีที่แล้ว +43

    You don’t need advanced maths skills, however you do need problem solving skills and an understanding in mathematical cryptography. The reality is the higher up the chain you go and the more technical your role, the more likely you will need a basic understanding. Same again in programming you will need to understand Boolean and linear algebra at least at a rudimentary level.

    You need linear algebra, discrete math, some calculus, and you'll eventually learn about binary operations, masking, and base translations. Oh and you must learn powers of 2 from 0-10, 20, 30, 40 and to do math with them. For example, how many 4Ki are in 16mi? Very important in memory management and networking.

    My questions are what are you recommending with the person who wants to study cybersecurity as you are experienced, and what needs to be done to start with like learning fundamentals I.T
    algorithms , mathematics , HTML , CSS , JavaScript , Python?

    • @collinsinfosec
      @collinsinfosec  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello, happy to help. To start off, I would suggest building a structured "learning plan." It doesn't have to be complicated, maybe a paper which outlines some resources to get started with. For the I.T. fundamentals, take a look into hardware, software, networking. There are plenty of free and affordable resources out there. Check out this list of resources here: cybercademy.org/resources

    #1 That math problem isn't difficult it has more to do with your own weakness for this lesson lets call it a Vulnerability. #2 This video is 4min long i'm not watching this after the first few words. The answer is yes you need math for EVERYTHING! From basic math skills to advanced you need them all.
    From my personal experience I don't even have to google this stuff to tell you:
    For digital signal processing which you will use in cyber security has basic math functions like sin and cos along with their inverse and how many programmers do not even know the standard math library very well.
    In cryptography there are all sorts of numerical properties you have yet to even hear of.
    The math gets harder not easier so don't let people tell you different read papers and get used to it. It's late for me right now or I would try to remember some of the things that might actually help you do that. The math notation on papers is difficult not the math its actually pretty simple arithmetic and cancelation because you can input 1's into most of the variables .

    • @collinsinfosec
      @collinsinfosec  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      As highlighted in the video, I didn't say you wouldn't need math at all. Programming and Cryptography are two big areas which will need math. The purpose of this message surrounds more of a typical cybersecurity analyst job rather than development or research position - really depends on the area of focus.

    In an entry-level security job, you can cope without math. But if you want to go into management and consultancy, then you're going to need to understand the complex math required for producing realistic probability calculations. If you don't, then you're going to be blind guessing your ARO for security risks and potentially wasting company money. If someone was to come to me with no mathematical analysis to back up ARO and EF values then I'm going to see those numbers as BS.

    You dont need math, but it will help a lot when dealing with conceptual problems, that for sure EVERYBODY will eventually encounter.

    I just started my career as a cyber security analyst five days ago, and the truth is that you don’t need any math at all.
    The only critical thing is your communication skills and writing skills because you will be talking to your clients and writing a report that’s well written and details. Anyone can be in cybersecurity if you have a passion for it and are willing to learn new things. You don’t need to be wise to be in this field. Hard work will get you paid!

      @@ShuaibGrove I’m currently a junior in college pursuing cybersecurity, but I have my SEC+ tho, and that’s what helped me gain knowledge and skills to qualify for my new position

      @@sahilbhatt7864 I’m still in college, and I’m currently taking the basics of python programming, btw you don’t need programming in cybersecurity.
      Trust me; I was nervous and overthinking stuff because I had so many rejections when applying for this role. But keep going and work hard.
      FYI: college is good and not good because it doesn't prepare you for a job. My cybersecurity manager only had two years of an associate degree and no certs but “they “ got the knowledge and knew how to do their job.
