I can't get over this spectacular setting. Amazing that we can even view this eagle couple on camera! I must do some research on this pair. Another excellent reason to put off doing human stuff that I'm supposed to be doing. Thank you so much, SKH!
I could watch for hours and sometimes do. ❤🦅❤ A question on the wing tag? How was he tagged? Just wondering why they don’t use something a bit more subtle? Do some have implants that can be read with radar? I hope my ignorance isn’t showing too badly. 🫣😅 This couple is so, so sweet. ❤🦅❤
Boys and their sticks! This is an especially beautiful pair. Thunder is one fine looking female and I see her stats bear it out. I am new to this pair, although I think I saw bits last season. Or another cliff side nest. The older sibling had pushed the younger one off the nest if this is same family. Looks like all the Cali eagles like to lay later in January so lots of viewing ahead.
I believe if you search the Institute for Wildlife Studies page they have a video showing them doing the wing tag on someone! They were used for easy identification from a distance in the field when bald eagles were being reintroduced to the Channel Islands in the 90s and 00s. (If you're familiar with California condors, they do the same thing. It really is much easier to ID birds than looking for small leg bands, especially in the days before everyone had an HD camera in their pocket.) Since the bald eagle population on those islands has now recovered, they're no longer used--I think it's been at least 5 years, maybe 10, since the last eagle was wing-tagged there.
@ thanks for that hood information and the historical context. Only been watching them not quite 2 years and learning as much as I can. I can totally relate to the field tags helping spot individual birds. Not like an albatross that moves slowly and can even be picked up. For them, leg bands are easy. I’m watching a handful of eagle nests around the world. But I have an extra sweet spot for Jackie & Shadow. This is a beautiful pair and I’m glad to be here ahead of the eggs.
Will someone please let me know where these eagles are. I've been following Jackie and Shadow in Big Bear, and just now happened upon these beauties. I also spend waaay too much time following Annie & Archie the Cal Berkeley Falcons!😊
New cam is fabulous!

Oh, I loved Thunder and Chet last season--and this new camera is spiffy, goodness! Fabulous stuff. Thanks, SKH.

I thought the same thing. Usually leg banded.

Thunder & Akecheta are on Catalina Island, CA. And there is never enough time for watching Annie & Archie! 🙃
Is Thunder a big girl or just older and wiser?
A bit of both, I think.
