Yeah it's really sad that Girlfriend was like her only mainstream song. She was literally kinda forced by her label to write it since they wanted to push her to the pop market :/ same with the rest of her title tracks after that. Her music outside that is great
I feel like Hozier has really strong lyrics too. Great songwriting. Can make you feel things and go through experiences you actually never went through
The Way was kinda bubbling (already somewhat famous) under Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, etc. 2013 was a very big year and just being known like that is already notable.

Ya, but the UK is Dua Lipa central. Worldwide, it was New Rules. However, in the US, it wasn't until Don't Start Now she really got popular (which is kinda pathetic, Americans, why are you so slow towards new foreign artists
I don't think Counting Stars is the song that made One Republic famous, they had quite a few really good and succesfull songs before that, like Apologize (which was a really big song at the time) , Good Life, Stop and Stare...
the songs that actually made these artists famous: Taylor Swift: Tear Drops on My Guitar Shakira: Ojos Asi John Legend: Ordinary People Macklamore: Thrift Shop Twenty One Pilots: Holding on to You Adele: Chasing Pavements OneRepublic: Apologize
To me Macklemore has a unique voice (he has a distinct sound, like you could immediately tell him apart) and he has good lyrics, and his songs incorporate different melodies 👌💞💞💞
Honestly i think that Michael Jackson was already very famous when he did the album "off the wall" ... He had already a 15 years carrier , because the Jackson 5 were huge !!
Are they? I thought the a in Lavigne is pronounced like the a in the word car and the e in Levine is pronounced like the e in the word kettle. But the vigne and vine are pronounced the same.
Avril's name is french so her spelling is more "correct" for "the vine" Likely some letters got dropped from Adam's family name somewhere in his genealogy
Funny to see how artists seem to have a different breakthrough song in various countries. But the songs you mentioned were also the breakthrough songs of Ariana and Rihanna in my country. 👍🏻
Where I lived in Europe, “Pon de Replay” got played a loooot. It was definitely the first song I ever seen from Rihanna. So even if it wasn’t big everywhere, it put her on the map. Btw, didn’t “Umbrella” come out before “Unfaithful”? Was “Unfaithful” bigger than “Umbrella” in Poland?
@@Lucaz99 Here in Brazil I think the Rihanna's breakthrough was "Umbrella". "Unfaithfull" was one year older, but started to play a lot more after "Umbrella" became a hit song.
@@prof.thiagoalmeida1226 It depends on your definition of breakhrough I think. Pon de Replay didn't chart everywhere but made people invest in Rihanna. Umbrella made her a STAR. So I think you could make a case for both.
I love the fact that little mix is included in this video. Lot of people that live in America don't know who they are bc their label hasn't represented them in America since the start of their career. I'm happy to know that it's getting better even tho they have been famous everywhere else for 10 yrs already ( I'm sorry about my English, it's not my first language)
Hey don’t be worrying about your level of English! That was like 99% perfect apart from “carrier” - career would be the word you were looking for because carrier comes from the verb carry, as in to hold. You have a “one-up” on an awful lot of people who can only speak one language
for Avril, she was verrrry cool at the time for young wannabe pop-punk girls. Definitely a vibe and attitude in the video was a big attraction. Everyone started wearing ties like she did in the video.

Michael Jackson was famous since he was 10 as he started performing when he was 5...but don't stop till you get enough is probably his ticket to go solo
In my opinion, Taylor became famous from Teardrops in my guitar (which, back in the day, a Colombian girl like me would’ve only known about if it was “big” in the US). She did become HUGE after You belong with me, but she was already well-known prior to that
@@Goldy01 ...you do realise that Latin America is comprised by multiple nations, right? Which ... Makes its success... The very definition of international. Lmao.
Dua Lipa blew up with “Blow you mind (Mwah)” in 2016, “New Rules” came out later, when she had all ready made it in the U.K., it didn’t make her famous, it got her trending on TH-cam so people in America saw it, making her a big name in the states, she had already performed at the Summer Time Ball by Capital FM a few times and the Jingle Bell Ball (same radio station) by the time “New Rules” came out.

I’m surprised Joel didn’t put unique voice for Lorde. Idk about you but I think she’s quite recognizable Little mix should’ve been unusual for times cause there weren’t many girl bands at the time Mine should’ve been in sync compatibility I saw that song in so many things
I’m pretty sure Macklemore’s breakthrough song was Thrift Shop and 50 Cent’s one was In Da Club, Candy Shop came like 1 or 2 years after In Da Club and still isn’t as big as In Da Club is
Maybe I'm just old, but I feel like OneRepublic was already big by the time Counting Stars came out? Apologize, Stop and Stare, and Secrets, All The Right Moves, and Good Life were all fairly big songs and I know I heard them all on the radio at some point. Secrets was even in the Sorcerer's Apprentice which is a Disney movie. Not that being in a movie makes it big, but it likely helped it along. Though Secrets is a great song without any help.
Idk if I would’ve added Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough in there. Michael was huge before that, it should’ve been I Want You Back instead because that’s what actually made him famous
@@KD-cd2ck No it wasn't. His solo career was started with that song. Yes, he was already famous as part of the Jackson 5. But Don't stop till you get enough made his solo career

I desperately need Roomie to react to Tom Holland's Lip Sync Battle episode where he synced to "Umbrella" by Rihanna. (Maybe an episode/series on lip sync battles???) Who agrees?
Okay but how did "Take Me to Church" not get "Interesting Lyrics"? I think the strong message of the song was probably the main reason it became so big
I don't think you quite understod the concept of "I kissed a girl" like she didn't do it to get attention from a guy because one line in the song is "Hope my boyfriend don't mind it"so we already had a guy but I guess it was just experimental" I kissed a girl just to try it" "Your my experimental game, just human nature"
@@jazz_meh true, and in that time the trend didn't extend to guys. Guys were socially expected to be excited by their girlfriend kissing someone else and for some reason it wasn't considered cheating but a girl would be appalled if her boyfriend did that to her. Madness.

When I first heard that song, I thought I would despise Chainsmokers no matter what they did. Than they made Roses which I adore and now I can hate them for stuff outside their music.
@@Pooky1991 Roses is their best track imo, but with that being said, it's just a decent track.
"lEt ME tAke A seLfIE"
Roomie, Ariana and Mac started dating in 2016 and that song was released in 2013 so they were only friends at the time. Hope that was helpful!
Little mix is so underrated in America
Wait but isnt the band american??? HUH I THOUGHT I KNEW SOMETHING FOR ONCE IN MY LIFE
@@nightninja3632 lol no they’re from the UK. They won the X factor UK in 2011 if I’m correct.
Ye they really deserve more recognition 😃

As soon as Complicated started i got CHILLS. It’s a masterpiece
I don’t know why Joel doesn’t like Avril
Avril was an ICON to us emo girls
Yessss i know i mean come on that song is timeless
Yeah it's really sad that Girlfriend was like her only mainstream song. She was literally kinda forced by her label to write it since they wanted to push her to the pop market :/ same with the rest of her title tracks after that. Her music outside that is great
@@atinygoldendeer2045 I feel like sk8r boi (or however it was spelled) was pretty mainstream popular at the time. Among kids at least.
Ever since I discovered Joel's channel, I have gotten into this routine in which I have to watch his new video after I get back from work.
Gangnam style is literally a commentary about society and the wealthy (South Korea's golden spoons). Sometimes the west needs to turn on CC.
He said this in another video I think

Joel: adds a sync category
Joel 1 minute later: “I’ve never met this category in my life”
I feel like Hozier has really strong lyrics too. Great songwriting. Can make you feel things and go through experiences you actually never went through
Totally agree that his lyrics are a key part of his popularity and especially with this song.
I thought Ariana's blow up song was "Problem" ft. Iggy Azalea
The Way came before Problem
The Way was kinda bubbling (already somewhat famous) under Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, etc.
2013 was a very big year and just being known like that is already notable.
The way reached top 10 on the US charts when it came out so it is her first
I actually really like Nickleback XD I feel like a lot of people hate them just because it's popular to hate them
Before How You Remind Me, they had some really good songs from their first album. I saw them in concert before they were “popular.”
Agreed. I enjoy a lot of their music.
I'm not a huge fan, but there are some alright songs from Nickelback, and honestly I feel like it is just a meme to hate them at this point.
Plus who didn't vibe to rockstar when that came out? It was literally EVERYWHERE and EVERYONE seemed to love it.
Is it bad how much I like them? 😂
They’re not bad but i can only listen to Chad’s voice for so long lol
One Direction's first song was What Makes You Beautiful as well as their breakthrough song, how gret is that. Im a Directionar, but it makes sense ever since they had been formed on the x-factor they has started gathering fans and fame, and after releasing WMYB it just grew to heights.
Video content ideas-:
1. Ranking songs named on food items ( the ketchup song, ice-cream, kiwi, cherry, sugar, champagne problems, etc)
2. ranking songs named on diseases or injuries or accidents or disasters etc( I'm not sure if we have got it in a number sufficient for making a video upon it)(like heart attack, Stockholm syndrome etc kinda).
3. or, you can guess a song along side a competitor by playing it on reverse and then gradually make it harder by increasing the speed on reverse by a certain percentage and every time you guess it wrong, idk put some punishment there.(I am not quite sure if it's gonna be a bit complicated to play).
4.The name place Animal thing game.( U can add categories like emotions, Time/numbers etc)
You can divide your white board in these four categories and then rank and decided which category has the best songs:-).
Like in name category-: songs named after names.( Olivia, bloody Mary, etc)
In place category-: Carolina ,cornelia street, etc.
Animal category-: animals, who let the dogs out roar etc.
Thing category-: umbrella, chandelier, maps, cardigan, etc.
Emotions category-: emotions, lonely, alone, happy etc.
Time/number category-: a thousand years, a thousand miles, 18, 22, 7 rings, A.M. etc.
5.Guess the song by describing the music video to the other person.
7. Famous artists who are good songwriters but bad/average vocalists vs famous artists who are good vocalists but bad/average songwriters.
6. Singers when they write a song for themselves vs when they write thr song for other artists.
And as you used to be a drummer; these topics might just interest you;
1. Most viewed drumming videos on TH-cam.
2. Singers who can drum vs drummers who can sing.
Hope you like these ideas Rami.

Dua Lipa's breakthrough song, at least here in UK, was a 2016 single called "Blow your mind".
Ya, but the UK is Dua Lipa central. Worldwide, it was New Rules. However, in the US, it wasn't until Don't Start Now she really got popular (which is kinda pathetic, Americans, why are you so slow towards new foreign artists
No one knew her here in Asia before new rules
I don't think Counting Stars is the song that made One Republic famous, they had quite a few really good and succesfull songs before that, like Apologize (which was a really big song at the time) , Good Life, Stop and Stare...
the songs that actually made these artists famous:
Taylor Swift: Tear Drops on My Guitar
Shakira: Ojos Asi
John Legend: Ordinary People
Macklamore: Thrift Shop
Twenty One Pilots: Holding on to You
Adele: Chasing Pavements
OneRepublic: Apologize
Shakira ''Estoy Aquí''
For twenty one pilots I would say car radio since it is their biggest hit from their first mainstream album
Stressed out was a hit from TØP. I think it brought them their fame.
50 Cent :- In da club
Yeah, apologize came out like a decade before counting stars.
I love New Rules because it’s not just an ex song, it can also be a song about healthy boundaries with abusive/toxic people! Love it! 😄
To me Macklemore has a unique voice (he has a distinct sound, like you could immediately tell him apart) and he has good lyrics, and his songs incorporate different melodies 👌💞💞💞
agreed :)
Honestly i think that Michael Jackson was already very famous when he did the album "off the wall" ... He had already a 15 years carrier , because the Jackson 5 were huge !!
He was famous always but i think his first solo album alongside thriller made him an international household name
The way Joel says “palatable” is so jarring every time 🤣
I don't agree with the onerepublic one. Wouldn't it technically be "Apolegize" that made onerepublic famous?
yeah that's what I thought too, I thought they were already pretty big when Counting Stars came out
Technically it would be "apologize"
Yp
I just realized that "Levine" and "Lavigne" pronounce exactly the same!
Are they? I thought the a in Lavigne is pronounced like the a in the word car and the e in Levine is pronounced like the e in the word kettle. But the vigne and vine are pronounced the same.
I thought Levin is pronounced like Levi's 😂😂😂
@@RiinaMary both are pronounced using schwa, not clear a or e. With the same stress in both words, they’re phonetically the same
Avril's name is french so her spelling is more "correct" for "the vine"

I was sure that Rihanna's breakthrough was "Unfaithful" and Ariana's was "Problem". But that's probably just the case in Poland 😅
Btw, didn’t “Umbrella” come out before
“Unfaithful”? Was “Unfaithful” bigger than “Umbrella” in Poland?
@@Lucaz99 Here in Brazil I think the Rihanna's breakthrough was "Umbrella". "Unfaithfull" was one year older, but started to play a lot more after "Umbrella" became a hit song.
@@prof.thiagoalmeida1226 It depends on your definition of breakhrough I think. Pon de Replay didn't chart everywhere but made people invest in Rihanna. Umbrella made her a STAR. So I think you could make a case for both.
I would say both Dua and Taylor also have pretty recognisable, unique voices
Actually, taking selfies were just starting to blow up during the time for that song
Yes I love them girl’s they are the biggest girl band in the world but America does not quite know them
Hey don’t be worrying about your level of English! That was like 99% perfect apart from “carrier” - career would be the word you were looking for because carrier comes from the verb carry, as in to hold. You have a “one-up” on an awful lot of people who can only speak one language
@@aoifeodoherty601 thanks for correcting me. It helps me learn English more and i appreciate it
for Avril, she was verrrry cool at the time for young wannabe pop-punk girls. Definitely a vibe and attitude in the video was a big attraction. Everyone started wearing ties like she did in the video.
Onerepublic made apologise years before counting starts.. and apologise was massive! 😅

I think another category could’ve been funny, or songs that make people laugh or go viral because of how funny they are
Going through really stressful moments right now, watching this to help me calm, thank you Roomie
In my opinion, Taylor became famous from Teardrops in my guitar (which, back in the day, a Colombian girl like me would’ve only known about if it was “big” in the US). She did become HUGE after You belong with me, but she was already well-known prior to that
Fun fact: in 1997 Chris Martin invited Keane's keyboard player to join Coldplay, but he refused
Roomie: "Song that made Shakira famous... Whenever Whatever."

Same
Dua Lipa blew up with “Blow you mind (Mwah)” in 2016, “New Rules” came out later, when she had all ready made it in the U.K., it didn’t make her famous, it got her trending on TH-cam so people in America saw it, making her a big name in the states, she had already performed at the Summer Time Ball by Capital FM a few times and the Jingle Bell Ball (same radio station) by the time “New Rules” came out.

It's funny how Michel Teló is in this list, since outside Brazil people don't know other songs from him
But he is really relevant in Brazil till today

Maybe I'm just old, but I feel like OneRepublic was already big by the time Counting Stars came out? Apologize, Stop and Stare, and Secrets, All The Right Moves, and Good Life were all fairly big songs and I know I heard them all on the radio at some point. Secrets was even in the Sorcerer's Apprentice which is a Disney movie. Not that being in a movie makes it big, but it likely helped it along. Though Secrets is a great song without any help.
