    All of my bikes were used and upgraded except my Brompton. By far happier with getting a bike that way. I look at what I spent and what I got and I got so much more than I could have afforded at the time. The Brompton was purchased by me when I realized it was the best for my commute and that I just needed to spend that for my own comfort.

    If you want to upgrade the brakes on such a bike I would highly recommend the Magura Hydraulik rim brakes
    I use them on the bike I use for hauling heavy trailer and it's really efficient and not much expensive than an good set of vbrake. (It will eat trough your rims quite fast so It's important to check the width of the braking surface regularly)

    I restored an old Ritchey MTB from the mid 80s. Set it up with 1X on a 11-46 Suntour cassette. It’s absolutely amazing and still feels like a retro bike with a modern twist! I am a huge fan of these restro mods builds, it’s so important to keep these old beasts rolling into the future!

    I did a similar thing, I picked up a pair of second-hand Mavic Crossmax Pros from eBay for less than £200 which totally transformed the bike. I could not believe the difference decent wheels made!
    As a happy bonus, the Mavics are tubeless ready, so I am running the bike in a tubless setup.

  • @robbchastain3036
    @robbchastain3036 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Second-hand bikes are my life on bikes and I just got home from work, an hour-plus over hill and dale on a 26" mountain bike modified for fun and functionality--including a 250-watt front-hub motor, a conversion kit by Green Zone Bikes and talk about simple, just the wheel and a Samsung battery and a thumb-paddle shifter, no sensors and no gizmos. And you did great with this bike and upgrades, Francis, that's a clean and classy build. And yeah, you could spend more but if you did, I'd suggest a rear rack and panniers and lights and fenders. And just get new wheels when the spokes start snapping. That's usually when I realize, hmm, time for new wheels. :)

Brake wise Magura's or a decent set of V-brakes. My old bike was XTR v-brakes till it's final outing in wales when I retro fitted it with discs. Also was feeling tired today must be the heat. :)

    This has got me thinking. I currently have a Triban 120 road bike from Decathlon. It has micro shifters and shimano tourney groupset.
    Question: it is worth upgrading the groupset and other components or simply get a new bike? (Such as a Trek Dolmane AL 2). Any comments welcome… thanks.

    • @GMSlash
      @GMSlash ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Daniel, I also have a Triban road bike, but it's an RC520 in my case.
      The RC520 has a drivetrain, which is partially 105, so I have 11 speeds and 2-by in the front.
      Replacing your Tourney and going full 105 would cost you about 500 euro in parts, but I would suggest also going for a partial 105 with a 105 rear derailleur, shifters, 11-speed cassette and chain.
      You will also probably need to change the hubs of your wheels (or maybe just some Decathlon wheels to save you some trouble), since Tourney is 6 or 7 speed, and the 11-speed cassette might not fit.
      In the end that could cost you somewhere around 300 euro.
      Only you can say if that price tag is worth it.
      You can always set a goal for yourself, and if you reach it, reward yourself with that new gear!

    • @tonyb9735
      @tonyb9735 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yew! That's a terrible idea. Frames designed for drops and frames designed for flat bars have different length top tubes. It's why the best flat bar gravel bikes tned to have a different frame to the rest of the range (see Specialized Diverge EVO). So I can't see that the geometry would work, but also why would you want drop bars on a gravel bike anyway? Drop bars are fine for the road, but the one place drop bars don't work is on gravel! They compromise both steering and brake control, and limit your ability to shift your weight around, and off-road you are seldom going fast enough to get any aero benefit. Drop bars off-road are a dreadful idea. IMO, obvs.
