Nerves do heal. I had an almost complete amputation of my leg and my knee was obliterated. But with lots of donor parts. My surgeon saved my leg and I can walk. Thank you to all organ donors!!!

They advertise it as nerve pain healing but again, it’s newer and I’m not even sure what it is really. There are some weird things out there that are being touted as working, that don’t. And then there is weed, that we aren’t allowed to use as combat veterans to help live out our lives in less arthritic pain, and maybe less PTSD.
the issue with these nerves is that the nerve that connects to your eye is actually thousands of nerves bundled together, every single human body is different in those ways and it makes eye transplants wayyyy harder cause you have to find which nerve is which, in a bundle of hundreds of thousands, where every nerve looks similar, so getting them together and healing, the easy part, the hard part is making each nerve go to the right place then stay there and heal, it was done on rats a long time ago and they went from blind to really bad vision but able to see because they used a drug and did the surgery without being able to find which nerve goes where, so it ended up healing but each nerve wasn't in the right place and boom, the eyes sensors couldn't give or receive the right signals, I'm really glad they've found a way around that though, glad to hear your leg was saved, medicine truly is incredible giving people their lives back in full

I'm a blind person who recently received a corneal transplant on August 22, 2023 and I'm grateful for the sight that I'm getting. HOWEVER, this man and the surgical team are more than amazing. So you aren't blind, you WERE blind, isn't? It was hard at first? Like how do you see the world of... Well, seeing? I hear a story of a man that regained sight and almost throw himself from a window because he didn't realize that he is walking towards his death.
It's crazy how he went through everything in his life, his military tours, and then seemingly safe at home after living a civilian work life for some time, he manages have such a severe accident, but again, not from war, but from a horrid accident at work. Glad he was able to not only survive, but receive proper care and seems to be doing good now.

War will always be horrific, but the accidents we have during regular, everyday life will always be the ones we can relate to more. Which is why it's so crazy to us how someone who could survive a war would end up like this due to something outside of war.

I once worked in a restaurant as a cook and one of the older waitresses was telling me about how she'd been blind and had a cornea transplant. She knew the name of the donor and when she praised him by name I totally lost it. I always had a premonition about her, something was special. Little did I know when she looked me in the eye I was looking back at the eyes of my own father who had passed a few years before.
I lost my right eye to an infection. My left eye is being treated with steroids and is not great but not getting worse. Let's hope together that we will one day benefit from this procedure.
Not only the patient, but the remarkable doctors deserve our respect and support. Someday we as people might see our money funneled into good causes such as this instead of war and destruction.

It sounds like the donor was killed for his 'parts'. A pancreas is a vital organ and one cannot live without it. In order for the organs to be useful, the donor must be alive when the organs are excised, in order that the organs 'take'.
Don't know who to thank first, the veteran for having no fear in a new surgery, or the doctor for taking such a leap of faith and trust in his own hands to get it done. This makes me glad to be alive to see this. Thank you both.
see my problem with asking doctors anything is their textbook answers in the age of fast growth science that a 10 year old text book can easily be out of date and if their only taking hear say they learned 10 years ago and arnt on the leading edge of that field how are they suppose to have any reinvents i still see doctors of their field give bad advice

I'm a combat veteran who lost my arm in Afghanistan. I've had a full arm transplant and it's amazing. The donor was a beast of a man, I'm already a big guy but my donor arm is stupid strong. Such a strange thing!
As someone born with a defective left eye I've wished my whole life for this kind of progress. This guy is a hero all over again and so is the medical team trying to make this possible

As a result I still have a lazy eye after 3 tries to straighten it, my eyes don't work together, and despite years of eye patches and contacts it's now legally blind and heading great to total blind...I want a robot eye lol
My husband lost his eye from a traumatic injury-just his eye, nothing happened to his face. He has an amazing prosthetic and he’s so happy with that, but this could just change his life. This makes me so incredibly happy!!
@@USBionicMarine because it shows that the transplant can be done that it's possible for the human body to heal something into itself even when the part doesn't belong to it, it'll take months and months and months to heal fully and even if he'll never see out of it he still has both eyes again and shows that in medicine we can transplant eyes and give people more hope of things being saved instead of going oh you'll never have your eye again now it can just become u may just be blind in that eye instead which is better than having no eye at all

My uncle, ophthalmologist under Dr. Gerard at Baylor Med, proposed this eye procedure back in the middle 60's. He was laughed at. So glad to see it finally come to fruition. Prayers for this and future patients.

@@vilja1 We didn't have the imaging tech or proper mapping of the brain in the 20s or 60s to know anything other than "guy can't see after surgery." The only reason this was worth it is BECAUSE it's "now" and not "back then."

I had surgery that left the right side of my upper torso almost completely numb front and back. After a few months, I could feel my nerves 'regenerating'. It was a painful feeling but gradually, I got my of my feeling back over the course of 30 YEARS. I'm still getting some of it back to this day now and then. The human body can be amazing in thew way it can heal.

I too lost my vision in my eye, in the line of duty. I was told I couldn't do certain things but I do. You never give up, hopefully, there will be a treatment for us all.

@@lol12332 Doubt. Humans of both sexes are attracted to aesthetics and looks so having someone be disfigured brings up the uncanny valley situation. Whether man or woman, there is a good chance their partners will find them too horrific to look at if not outright leave them because of it.

Just getting the tissues of the eye, one of the most complex attachments known in the human body, to sit properly in the skull is nothing short of a miracle breakthrough! Having done some considerable research into the possibility of whole eye transplantation, the daunting task of attaching the complex network of muscles, nerves and glands has always been stated as a substantial roadblock. Reattaching the optic nerve and its millions of nerve fibers to the proper pathways in the brain's visual cortex is an entirely separate issue. But getting the whole donor eye in place is really the first step. Loss of vision is one of the most difficult adjustments an injured soldier can face. To say nothing of the thousands who lose their vision due to disease or accident. That's why sight restoration is receiving a tremendous amount of research attention. Not a billion dollar quesstion. More like a trillion dollar answer!
@@annan7728 It HAS started in animals. This was the first human trial, and the man agreed to it, knowing it was experimental and only a stepping stone for others to be helped. He SAID in the video he's doing this to help others, not because he thought he'd actually get his vision back.
I honestly really think with proper time and training, all of those complex connections could be solved by AI, making this process more viable and much faster if successful.

At the risk of sounding all "blue sky" about the potential of AI (let's not forget how the internet got about a decade ahead of itself technologically in 2000) I do believe that many complex problems will yield to brute force AI. It's still going to be tricky to get actual CNS tissue to connect to transplanted CNS tissue. But there is just SO MUCH MONEY being thrown at this problem, we may see real progress before 2030. Absolutely horrible what happened to him. I’m glad he’s regaining some normalcy in life and is optimistic and getting back out in the world. The donor gets my respect as well. People underestimate how much of the human body can benefit someone else as a donor. I have tendons from donors and my wife is in a kidney transplant list. It’s a 6-8 YEAR wait in this region due to the lack of donors. I’d like to thank everyone that’s a donor, you’re not only going to help people but also save some lives too.

I had surgery that left the right side of my upper torso almost completely numb front and back. After a few months, I could feel my nerves 'regenerating'. It was a painful feeling but gradually, I got my of my feeling back over the course of 30 YEARS. I'm still getting some of it back to this day now and then. The human body can be amazing in thew way it can heal.

Just getting the tissues of the eye, one of the most complex attachments known in the human body, to sit properly in the skull is nothing short of a miracle breakthrough! Having done some considerable research into the possibility of whole eye transplantation, the daunting task of attaching the complex network of muscles, nerves and glands has always been stated as a substantial roadblock. Reattaching the optic nerve and its millions of nerve fibers to the proper pathways in the brain's visual cortex is an entirely separate issue. But getting the whole donor eye in place is really the first step. Loss of vision is one of the most difficult adjustments an injured soldier can face. To say nothing of the thousands who lose their vision due to disease or accident. That's why sight restoration is receiving a tremendous amount of research attention. Not a billion dollar quesstion. More like a trillion dollar answer!

I honestly really think with proper time and training, all of those complex connections could be solved by AI, making this process more viable and much faster if successful.

At the risk of sounding all "blue sky" about the potential of AI (let's not forget how the internet got about a decade ahead of itself technologically in 2000) I do believe that many complex problems will yield to brute force AI. It's still going to be tricky to get actual CNS tissue to connect to transplanted CNS tissue. But there is just SO MUCH MONEY being thrown at this problem, we may see real progress before 2030. Absolutely horrible what happened to him. I’m glad he’s regaining some normalcy in life and is optimistic and getting back out in the world. The donor gets my respect as well. People underestimate how much of the human body can benefit someone else as a donor. I have tendons from donors and my wife is in a kidney transplant list. It’s a 6-8 YEAR wait in this region due to the lack of donors. I’d like to thank everyone that’s a donor, you’re not only going to help people but also save some lives too.
