I remember watching these episodes with my parents as a young child and not really getting the 'grown-up' jokes; thanks to TH-cam, I can watch them all over again and have a proper laugh!

"over to you, Angus". One of Paul's best lines in the whole series.

    Martin Clunes' joy is contagious.

Tears tears tears of laughter all the way through. THE FUNNIEST, WITTIEST 5 people. They all fired so well together. So well that many asides and interjections were inaudible because of the laughter carrying over from the remark just before. And Angus's many looks to camera --- just exquisite.

Not only was it one of the best moments of all time in the show… But Martin‘s reaction when Paul said “I can’t think of anything that’s not funny… Over to you Angus“… martins reaction Made it so much fucking better!

To the video editor: Having watched a lot of your submissions, I should tell you that you've done a great job of it. The video quality is good -- even in recordings of the early series. Some others' efforts are dodgy, even converted from VHS. Their compilations are annoying clip-shows of punchlines without context, with no answers to quiz questions, and no continuity. Your episodes are reliably high-quality. Cheers from Toronto.

I just realize when Ian comes back from the bathroom the joke he’s making.....is that he just went out and did a line of Coke/speed 😂😂

Perhaps this explains Clunes' overly exubrant reactions.

Funny reminders of past smoking popularity. Feels so foreign now.

young Clunes here reminds me a bit of Miles Jupp. I like him better in this than as a presenter later on.

apropos the 'Men Behaving Badly' crew on Have I Got News For You, the famously testosterone driven comedy panel show. ;-)

24m50s I've never understood why people get a laugh for just bad language with no wit = Martin.

Maybe this particular era in his career isn’t to your liking, but he definitely brought the wit and laughs later in his career. His lowbrow comedy and reputation was a big part of his image back then. But his classical training, education, and fucking hilarious wit shines through later in his career

Martin Clunes is generally great but I agree the curse of the present time, going back 20 yrs, is that profanity and any reference to sex is considered hilarious. Generally, the wit, subtlety, sarcasm, and undrlying assumed common knowledge of British humour is the best in the Engl speaking world but the increasing bewldering popularity of profanity etc reminds me of teaching Grade 9 students in Toronto.

Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view!"
Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam."
Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!"
Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..."
Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!"
Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky."
Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction."
Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment?"

I've often wished that Paul didn't look so surly in the earlier ones, as I 'm a big fan; but I guess the competitiveness was the draw?
