I will never say Steve Park was a bust. His first injury in the late 90s cost him a shot at Rookie of the Year. His 2nd injury in 2001 nearly cost him his life and forever affected his driving ability. He was on pace to finish in the top 10 in points that season. Steve Park was a great talent, but circumstances forever ruined his racing career. Can’t call him a bust for that.
Steve Park wasn't a bust, he just had horrible luck and had several bad crashes, he showed glimpses of what could have been though. A bust doesn't win 2 races in Cup,
Agreed, almost all of fans who watch park said he had great talent, just horrible luck. He was much better than mikey and near jr for a bit in results. He even came back and got a 13th in TBRs trash equipment at Daytona.
As someone who watched Steve in person running modifieds before he ever got his big break, I totally get the title and I'm not pissed in any way shape or form. As you said ""Through no fault of his own" It was a totally freak accident and it changed him forever. But I'm here to make DAMN SURE people understand this one thing. That guy could drive THE EVER LOVING SHIT out of a race car. One of the most talented guys I ever saw wheel a race car. They say Senna could make a formula one car dance through the corners. Steve Park could make a modified beg for mercy around Thomspon.
Irvan raced better afterwards though. Sure, he wrecked a lot, but he also won races and finished in the top 10. Poor Steve never recovered at the cup level though. (At least he won that truck race, and a few lower series events later on)
Yea and legit wins, no rain out wins. I mean dont get me wrong i take a rain out win too but i hate that to be my only w.... i won the race was neck and neck at 45mph.... behind the pace car lol
You say he was perhaps the unluckiest driver in NASCAR history, and that may well be true - no disagreements here. On the other hand, though, he was also insanely lucky for surviving all those terrible wrecks. It's a shame those injuries took him out like that. I always did like Steve Park.
He was very unlucky, true, but for trying you just have to feel bad time-to-time for Mark Martin- probably the beat driver to never win a championship.
I noticed hat too. Mark raced him with everything he had right up to the checkered flag, but the second the race was over he genuinely congratulated Park on the win. Mark is a good guy.
I feel bad for the poor guy....He was a great driver but injuries made him into a bust. I agree with you making this video because a bust doesn't mean that he sucked or just didn't have the equipment. It is all circumstances behind it which is Steve's case. Good video BFM!
Nothing Here Both Ernie and Jr didn’t fall off as quickly as Park. Their injuries came late in their career after plenty of moderate to good success. Park was out of Cup pretty quick
Nothing Here Steve Park practically retired in 2003, had no wins after 2001 and only had 2 cup wins while Ernie retired in 1999, got injured in 1994, made a successful comeback in the cup series scoring 3 wins after his horrific head injury, and finished in the top 20 in points in 3 of the 4 seasons after his injury. Steve Park would be considered a bust at that point making this a fair argument. Comparing Steve Park to Ernie Irvin is not a valid point.
Black Flags Matter still bad timing lol while I disagree with your bust tag. I can say his career isn't what you would picture as successful it certainly isn't a Casey Atwood bust or b Hamilton jr.
@@BlackFlagsMatter, while I love your videos, calling Steve a bust is unfair. He is honestly lucky to be alive after that hit at Darlington... And hell, living in Sr's house is a dream within its own for most people... That's my only disagreement with all your videos, imo.
At first when I saw Nascar Busts: Steve Park I was upset since he is one of my favorites of all time but now I absolutely understand what you meant and I really enjoyed this video seeing some of the footage again thanks :)
One of the unluckiest drivers in NASCAR history. Honestly, that day in Darlington, when they put that tarp up I thought he died in that. Which sucked cause he was well on his way to finishing in the top 10 in points on the Cup side that year.
No, no, no, no. Steve Park is not a bust. And in no way, was he a bust. This man suffered severe bad luck. His rookie season for example. 2000 and 2001 were major improvements and he was in contention for the top 10 in points in 2001 until his Darlington wreck. I'm sorry, this is wrong.
This really isn't a bust. I get what you're saying but I don't really factor in injuries. For a football example, Ryan Leaf is a bust, RGIII really isn't.
Steve Park could not have had worse luck after his crash at Darlington. When it comes to the "What if's" in NASCAR, Park is certainly among the more common names that comes to my mind.
He's a bust based on the definition. He had hype, he had expectations, he flashed but ultimately didn't fulfill that potential. He's a victim of 2 of the most awful freak accidents that you could have happen and was never the same after Darlington. On top of it, DEI after Sr passed was never the same place. His 2001 showed his potential. It sucks because he is a really nice guy and it would have been cool to see but the stars never lined up right. It's poetic in a way to have a throwback tribute at Darlington since it was the genesis of his fall. Well done sir. Well done indeed.
Every true Steve Park fan knows that after his accident at Darlington, Steve's speech was always a little slurred and slowed. I do believe the injury affected his reaction times too. As long as things were good and the car ran as expected he was still fast. But when the car was unpredictable, Steve didn't have the reaction times needed anymore. We miss you Steve.

I actually met Steve Park at a meet n greet thing for a race weekend, he was actually quite a nice guy from what I could remember! He still seemed hopeful in 2010 of making a comeback for the Truck Series or even work back up to the Cup Series. I do think it would be quite cool to see what could have been for him, he did have some talent in him.
As a Park fan, I should be upset. Although, your videos include a large amount of effort and research. I respect your work ethic and I really enjoy your videos. Keep these videos coming.
He really was never the same after that Darlington crash, his voice even was so different after it. He had some good runs in the lower series but the longer distances of cup seemed to take their toll.
It makes me sad. I liked Steve Park back then, I remember watching the darlington Busch race and was in shock seeing that wreck. It’s just a shame that wreck happened. He could have been a legend, right up there with the likes a Mark Martin, Sterling Marlin, Dale Jarrett, but luck wasn’t on his side.

Steve Park got DEI off the ground. You can see where his stats start picking up through 1999 and into 2000. By the 2nd half of 2000 he was a very consistent driver until his Darlington injury in 2001. He wasnt terrible after that, but it took him a while to get back in the swing, which he did in later 2002, but Theresa Earnhardt in her infinite witchiness obviously had it in for him pretty early in 2003. He got his footing back under him somewhat at RCR at points, but it's pretty fair to say that injury derailed him. Both Park and Michael wouldve had a lot more success if Dale never died.
Park would have had a good career in my view if not for the Darlington crash that injured him. That injury took away what edge and good response time behind the wheel he had. He actually had decent results in 1999 considering the #1 team was still pretty new at the time. 2000 he got his first win and was close to the Top 10 in points. In 2001, he was solidly in the Top 10 in points with a win when he was injured. And he's really getting a throwback scheme this week? Logano's one of the few guys I like nowadays too (because he's a hard racer and blocks out the criticism he gets)
I would say Steve Park could’ve been a driver with a very similar caliber of Dale Jr or Kasey Kahne. Someone with great talent that wouldn’t wreck race cars, and could always give you a solid top 15 finish
I wouldn't call him a bad driver just someone who never got to reveal his full potential. All those wrecks and when dale died he just just never was the same
After rewatching every race in 01 & 02 a month ago, I've been asking for this video, thanks. Park literally wrecked almost every single week in 02. As I did watch each race I thought, what lap is Park gona crash. Seriously tho, it's sad he got hurt.
My father is friends with him, and you can definitely tell he is a little slow still from his Nascar injuries, although he is great person. One of my favorite memories is driving home with Steve from he 2016 CocaCola 600, and talking about the current state of Nascar with him
I understand that but I refuse to believe such a statement. I count people as NASCAR Busts if they raced in the Cup Series, but they never won. Sorry, I just feel sorry for Steve Park.
I don’t really consider him a bust. However, he had a lot of potential that was never seen due to injuries. He could drive a stock car well, but it’s harder to do it through pain.
Hey I love your videos and I have been watching them nonstop for the last couple days, keep it up. But I just wanna say I absolutely love the fact that you use the old NFL prime time music.
When I started watching NASCAR he was my favorite because his car was #1 and I thought his car looked the coolest. His paint scheme is still probably my favorite to this day.
Steve Park is the Daniel Bryan of NASCAR, big expectations in the lower series (Featherlite for Park, the Indies for Bryan), and injuries derailing his career in the highest level (1999 At Atlanta and concussions that forced retirement in 2016 for Byran). Why am I saying this? Because I see it as a similar story, that is all
Sometimes "racing luck" gets you to the top and sometimes it knocks you off the top. Bad racing "luck" is not a reflection of actual skill and Steve Park had a lot of that skill. Thanks for RETRACTING
I remember when park had the crash in the Busch series. I was watching that race, and remember just how off that Saturday felt. Like it seriously felt like something was really off.
Darlington in 2001 was such a heartbreak. Came into the race 10th in points before that Busch Series injury. Returns a year later to the track his injury happened at (interesting fact: Park finished the 2001 year in 7th for laps led), takes the lead early on, but gets in a wreck as the leader. Then that was essentially the end of what could have been.

I met Steve park several times and the most notable was in 2000 when we went to rockingham and he was the nicest and most down to earth person I ever met I was 5 at the time and my brother was 7 and he was signing autographs while holding my brother and I on his lap for every bit of an hour. We also were at rockingham in 2001 for that storybook race and I don’t think there was a single person there not cheering!
Steve: "Couldn't sleep the first couple of nights...thinking I'm in the Intimidator's house and he's right upstairs." You could say he was... Intimidated
Steve was a super cool guy and close friend to myself and to anyone he came in contact with him also true talent behind the wheel nothing but respect for him .
*edit - looks like I've been here before! * The only bust is the amount of injuries poor Steve had. He was an amazing mechanic and engineer and a helluva driver. Its too bad he never got a chance to really show his skills behind the wheel. It's heart breaking that he had done the hard work and got a great opportunity with the #1 team. God bless him. A real good guy as well. Love the videos - even if they are 'unprofessional' ;) - i hope people still remember what a load of trash that whole thing was! Hope you're all well and good.

Same number from JGTC/Super GT.
#1 NiSMO Pennzoil Skyline R34 GT-R
Park would have had a good career in my view if not for the Darlington crash that injured him. That injury took away what edge and good response time behind the wheel he had. He actually had decent results in 1999 considering the #1 team was still pretty new at the time. 2000 he got his first win and was close to the Top 10 in points. In 2001, he was solidly in the Top 10 in points with a win when he was injured.
And he's really getting a throwback scheme this week? Logano's one of the few guys I like nowadays too (because he's a hard racer and blocks out the criticism he gets)
2:27 Sr was upstairs laying in bed thinking “got damn right I am” lol
I would say Steve Park could’ve been a driver with a very similar caliber of Dale Jr or Kasey Kahne. Someone with great talent that wouldn’t wreck race cars, and could always give you a solid top 15 finish
I wouldn't call him a bad driver just someone who never got to reveal his full potential. All those wrecks and when dale died he just just never was the same
BTW, Park's status as a Bust was officially retracted by Darian in this video: th-cam.com/video/Etp5W-ADQzo/w-d-xo.html
One of my favorite memories is driving home with Steve from he 2016 CocaCola 600, and talking about the current state of Nascar with him
Excuse me? Steve Park is not a bust! He actually won races!
watch the video first please
I understand that but I refuse to believe such a statement. I count people as NASCAR Busts if they raced in the Cup Series, but they never won. Sorry, I just feel sorry for Steve Park.
Britton Kithcart I guess Chase Elliott is a bust then. Dang that sucks
Parody Boy, this is outdated now.
Britton Kithcart I never said I hated Elliott? Was just stating facts. He’s one of my favorite drivers.
Hey I dig the ESPN music cuts, reminds me of playing NFL 2k5.. You incorporated it well with your videos.
I mean steve park did win races but if it wasnt for injuries, he would've been better
I don’t really consider him a bust. However, he had a lot of potential that was never seen due to injuries. He could drive a stock car well, but it’s harder to do it through pain.
Steve park (along with Scott Wimmer) were two drivers that I don't call a bust just unlucky
Hey I love your videos and I have been watching them nonstop for the last couple days, keep it up. But I just wanna say I absolutely love the fact that you use the old NFL prime time music.
Steve Park, the Derrick Rose of NASCAR
When I started watching NASCAR he was my favorite because his car was #1 and I thought his car looked the coolest. His paint scheme is still probably my favorite to this day.
What Is The Name Of The Document That Most Of His Interviews in this video @ 2:03?
Steve Park is the Daniel Bryan of NASCAR, big expectations in the lower series (Featherlite for Park, the Indies for Bryan), and injuries derailing his career in the highest level (1999 At Atlanta and concussions that forced retirement in 2016 for Byran). Why am I saying this? Because I see it as a similar story, that is all
Another great video. And freakin' love the the NFL Live theme music playing in the background! Awesome
I'm so thankful to live in TN and able to enjoy the Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway.
I’ve heard that pocono clip so many times.
Start a tough luck category and lose the bust label for this man. He deserves more respect. Permanently injured from this sport.
Didnt Steve Park win a Battle of the Beach?
OMG I hate watching that accident!
I glad he’s ok! Thanks for sharing ! Too many accidents!
I consider Steve the biggest what if story in Cup
When he won at Watkins Glenn, it reminded me of Chase Elliott's first win
Me too! Maybe that's why I like Elliott.
Well.... Elliott dumped the guy to win.
6:40 That’s an incredible moment that’s never talked about, because Kevin Harvick erased Park’s name from history.
Steve Park wasn't a bust. Just the most unlucky driver ever.
That 2003 review video is such a well done documentary
I will never forget Steve's victory for DEI at Rockingham the very next Sunday following Dale Sr.'s death. Courage and tears.

That Pennzoil paint scheme was one of my all time favorites.
I wonder if he still has the tattoo.
Video idea: Gone too Soon: Jason (Left Turn) Leffler
Hated he didn't do better in his career I liked him!
Steve: "Couldn't sleep the first couple of nights...thinking I'm in the Intimidator's house and he's right upstairs."
You could say he was...
Intimidated
Met him at Daytona this past February. Awesome guy to talk to, wish he didn't have so much bad luck and injuries in his career like he did. :/
Steve was a super cool guy and close friend to myself and to anyone he came in contact with him also true talent behind the wheel nothing but respect for him .
Pickles cornflakes and pennzoil
Good Seasons: Steve Park 2000
*edit - looks like I've been here before! *
The only bust is the amount of injuries poor Steve had.
6:22 that's some cool stuff right there
