Booktok wasn't always like this. It used to have more genre diversity and was both much calmer and much smaller. Unfortunately it is now very rom/smut focused and rather obsessive. As an asexual person who tends to be somewhat uncomfortable with reading smut, I now end up mostly avoiding it. Also, once again, was in fact drawing while listening to this.
Im asexual too and sometimes spice scenes are completely fine (example: song of achilles, it didn't make mr uncomfortable or anything), but geez i hate when it's the whole plot.

It's so weird having friends who are minors reading these sorts of things, I personally love reading things like percy Jackson and books like the goldfinch, so I find it really hard to see how people would *want* to read this sort of stuff. But I wanna say that some books have fluff, but that is so different to spice, like extremely different.
How old are they causeif they are teenagers it is pretty typical of them to want to read stuff like this . ( from my experience and many of my friends expierience.) I don't do it anymore because i'm acesexual so its not really my thing anyway. Just tennage curiosity.
@@diesonneisthedude2668 yeah I guess so, they are teen, and I guess you could label it as curiosity. It's still really odd to me, because they'd force their little (pre teen) brother to read the sex scenes and that never sat right with me because I don't think he wanted to read that. Idk
thank you for bringing up how weird booktok is. i'm a man and i strongly dislike most romance books and find them boring. whenever someone (esp on tiktok or other social media) asks me what genres of books i like and dislike, i hesitate to bring it up because i don't want to be accused of being misogynistic, etc. i would never shame anyone for reading romance but i want that stuff to star far away from me, especially whatever 'romance' books booktok is into. (ironically, pride and prejudice is one of my favorite books of all time )😅
I think the biggest problem is the generalization (especially on booktok) that all “romance” books are these “corn” books. IMO these corn books are a subcategory of the romance genre, not the genre itself (if that makes sense). I’ve run into this problem looking for romance books to read and all that’s recommended is these corn books. It’s kind of frustrating when you want a well written, character driven romance and all you get is corn
when i was in middle/high school i got pulled into smut/fanfiction/booktok and i was depressed and had a porn/sex addiction. i just hope it isnt taking over these peoples lives like it did for me. thats why i cant read smut, even in small quantities.
I’m so sorry that happened to you. And yeah I think the same’s happening to these people and they’re in denial about it. I think what makes it worse is that they’re pushing these “recommendations” onto minors, which… sorry, as a 19 year old woman? Gender has nothing to do with it. This is an addiction and that entire subculture is in denial about it.
It's really impressive how you saw your problem and decided to work to fix it. How did you overcome it if you don't mind me asking? I'm also dealing with depression and had ventured into these spaces a bit too much recently, and I would like to get better.
Imo I love romance books but the innapropriate scenes should only be there IF its relevant to the storyline. And even then I hate the sex miscommunication trope. Like do they really love me idk bro you just decided to have sex with them. Books that are just full of those scenes for no reason im putting that shit down. Its just tasteless corn 🌽 to me but idk some people love that shit and i mean as long as youre not hurting anyone (going and hating other ppl that say youre addicted) then do your thing yknow.

the worst part about people commenting things like "booktok will treat you right" under minors videos is the fact that its blatant grooming. pretty sure i saw one instance not that long ago where a guy had to ask these adults to stop commenting things like that because he was underage, and it didnt do much to stop these people. yall cant find actual adults with tiktoks to comment those sorts of things on? actual brainrot
It gets bad when masked cosplayers post and shit and booktok starts getting bad in the comments like ''they have the right'' and they dont most cosplayers now a days are minors or they just want to be silly and shit and they just end up being bad and making the person uncomfortable :(
In my first period class oml there is this girl the only thing she talks about is smut and it’s so annoying like I’m sorry I’m reading mystery books and not smut 💀
I first see the booktok and masktok and i see it very often on tiktok and i thought it was normal (i was 12 back then) and unfortunatelly i got in the spiral of corn and got addicted to it, then the 'stop the booktok trend' come out and i relized just how bad those video, i relized how the booktok can get into a child head to think it was normal and got into it and sadly im one of the victim (now im watching less tiktok and just watch some animation meme or learn to draw to make those animation meme too)
Personally, I can't read those types of novels. The reading space is so saturated with romance and spicy books that it's difficult for me to find anything I'd WANT to read. I've been asking people for book recs for the found family trope because it's one of the few things I'm currently comfortable with reading. I don't even care if the book has romance as a last thought because the way the characters have been interacting has just led to such. I just want bigger sections of non- (the following) romance, mystery, horror, etc. Give me things that are not mainstream and I'm pretty sure I'd actually get back into reading. Honestly, I'm currently trying to get the Grisha trilogy and Crooked Kingdom... Basically I wanna get at least a good chunk of Leigh Bardugo's works because the stuff that I have read (so far) isn't pushing romance in my face. Romance has been written a bit like an afterthought. And I'm well aware of the romance in the Grisha Trilogy, I read it in high school, still love it.
I have this friend that posts masktok content and booktok got really mad that what they thought was a guy, is actually a woman. It’s kind of ridiculous. I love your content Louis and thank you for this video, I just sent it to her.
It's so funny that she said that guy calling then out is "misogynistic" but a lot of these main characters or main love interests in these booktoks are literally the worst characters ever written about. Especially COLLEEN'S characters, it's scary.
As someone who reads mostly thrillers/murder mysteries,i am not this out of touch about how i should or shouldn't act around people and or ever have been. Especially minors who are just sharing books that they like but not THOSE books which should be obvious since minors dont seek out or should be encouraged to do so. Also loved the video you're commentary is really good and i agree to lot of things you say,I've been following as of recent.
it strays farther than booktok... some of these people will see guys simply showing off their outfits and comment sexual shit :/ happens all the time and its way too normalized. i saw a girl comment "not while im ovulating please, thank you!" to a post of a teen (i am assuming, he looked fairly young, maybe a young adult) simply showing off his cowboy outfit and it had 17k likes!!! gross!!!!

What’s worrying to me about Booktok is the impressionality of the bulk of the readers. Booktok has a fair share of smutty books circulating and in these books are primarily female or AFAB protagonists with a male or AMAB love interest. This male interest is often (not always) displayed as cruel, violent, misogynistic, obsessive and abusive, but everything these men do are justified by moral scapegoating other characters by saying “oh! But Man B is sooooo much worse! He’s trying to rob a bank or something! Man A would never do that!”. This in itself is fairly lazy writing, but I digress. What’s important is that these male protagonists, for some readers, is all they’re going to see. They grow acquainted to this, and soon they see these traits as NORMAL. If they get into dating, if they want to make more friends, their idea of an ideal relationship is where they have no control. Where they can live in a fantasy that in real life can put them in a lot of danger. Because that idea of a controlling partner is so appealing and is always justified. THAT is what these people will actively look for. And there are some genuinely horrible, horrible people out there who will see this and think “hmm, all these people like me. I guess I’ll never have to change. I won’t have to reevaluate myself. I can do what I want.” And in turn, the readers will think “oh, this person just really loves me! And that’s hot! I suppose staying with them a little longer wouldn’t hurt…” and that there is the BASIS OF A LOT OF RELATIONSHIPS THAT END TERRIBLY!!!!!! THIS!!! This is an issue that Booktok needs to fix. In short, don’t romanticise abuse. Don’t sell love interests who act like this as the ‘ideal’. I might discuss the smut issue later when I get down to it. Thanks for the video Louis.
I was friends with a girl who straight up read smut novels AT SCHOOL. She would like make people look at what she was reading, making like everyone uncomfy

@@zathtanks i think it depends on the person tbh. my oldest sister is 40 and my oldest brother is 38. my brother has always had an interest in tech of all kinds, so he is more similar to you. but my SISTER? she has never rlly that person and had only facebook until like 6 years ago. im 25, so my whole life i have talked with her about things that i do on the internet. the fear and shock and confusion that i would instill in her when i talked about certain things was honestly very funny to me as a teenager. now she has an instagram and tiktok and is taking part in social media in a way she never rlly has before. she isnt into anything like this biketok stuff, but she is very much experiencing the throws of online fandoms/niches in a way thats more similar to these other millennials than the way she used to act
You know what's even worse they were suggesting extremely inappropriate books to the 16 teen year-old like wtf
😭
this morning I got jumpscared by a Call of Duty cosplayer thrusting at the phone :(
please tell me it was the one Brittany Broskis literally in love with 💀💀
Pls I am scared of them and they always have the mdni and stuff like- bro trust me I DO NOT want to interact with you

🐧
I love penguins
drop the penguin drawing /j
I BET YOUR ART IS GORGEOUS!!! >_
Penguins are so cute
Thank you for posting today. My chicken just passed away and I’ve been struggling a lot since I got home from the vet, and your videos always help me wind down and smile.
Aww I'm sorry they passed, I hope u feel better soon
Oh I'm so sorry... Rest in Peace little buddy♡
Ace-spec here and honestly I'm just not a fan of romance books in general (though I can feel like reading them sometimes if they're REALLY good) but smut is like.. it depends on how it's written, I guess. Also not a big fan of it.
@@kaehihi I'm ace too and I'm fine w reading smut, as long as it's not too detailed and explicit and it doesn't js turn into the main plot.
If telling that booktok is bad and they pull out “that is misogynistic” card, but the whole booktok smutty parts are straight up SA, it certainly ain’t feminist
literally, bs like that brings the feminism movement down. It sucks.
every time i see a booktok i have a fucking anneurysm 💀
ive never seen it tbh
Fr, I blocked the # and everytime they appear in a video of a man doing absolutely anything and commenting "the booktok girlies claim you" or some bs like that I get furious
same they are just insane
same fr, and masktok. I only ended up on those after searching call of duty. not a rabbit hole I wanna go down again 😭🙏
I CAN’T WITH THE COPYRIGHT FREE MUSIC THAT PLAYS AT 0:06 I HEARD THAT TOO MUCH IN LIKE 5 MINUTE CRAFTS 😭😭😭
Ah yes.The video we have all been waiting for! Great video man, booktok is insane 💀
As a EX- member of booktok I would like to apologize on behalf of everyone, (I’m still on biker tok but like not to simp, I’ve always liked bikes :] Edit: the second I read haunting Adeline I regretted my entire life, the only good booktok books were any ali hazelwood books ((which don’t contain large amounts of smut)) and the cruel prince)
I love Ali Hazelwood and the Cruel Prince too! I love romance but only when it’s 2 consenting adults with no SA
biketok used to just be about bikes, pretty bikes, rides, crashes, tips, but ever since booktok infiltrated us it’s been about thirst traps and guys in helmets pertaining to booktok people. i miss old biketok, bring back the pretty bikes and funny ride clips please💔
FR OMG I HATE WHAT BOOKTOK HAS DONE TO THE COMMUNITY ☹️
Louis, i want to thank you.
Youve made me so happy these past couple of months. Im very deppressed, and i always feel sad. But whenever i see your videos, i actually feel happy. Thank you for making me happy. Im feeling like shit today, but seeing you pisted a video half an hour ago, made me happy. Thank you for making me feel something other than absolute saddness and self loathing. You really are an awsome person and im very happy youre doing well in life. I really wish i was, but i know itll come someday. I feel like shit right now, and im crying life and idiot, but at least im happy. Thank you, really. I love you and your videos. Thank you. I hope you and everyone else had a nice day
I read the first part as „Louis, I want you.“ ☠️☠️
Ok so I read the whole comment and now I feel stupid commenting that^^ when it’s such a serious comment

Even worse is that they can differentiate fiction from reality 😂
You have no idea how Excruciating it was to wait for this incredible video for as long as I did.
I couldn’t bare to listen to some rando drone on for an hour about this. THANK YOU SO MUCH, for posting a video about this. You make it fun to listen to and learn. Thx bro
“Speaking of sins…booktok!” Had me dying for some reason 😭
Oh, yeah.I saw Film Cooper talk about these guys. Yeah, they're insane.
Same, these people are insane!
I know right, theyre super insane!
Colleen Hoover needs to be put on island without access to writing materials. but I'm not the epitome of good book taste, my favorite book is Jurassic Park and I've read it an ungodly number of times...
WHAT A BANGER jurassic park is my fav too 😤
YAY NEW POST!! I’m watching this while reading the 2018 Seattle script for Ride the Cyclone. I hope anyone who is reading this has an amazing week! ^•^

I love that every video starts with a jojo reference. Absolute king.
Not only this, a lot of the books are actually DISGUSTING. Like haunting Adeline? EAUGH. She was literally 🍇 by a gun and people were defending it because she was getting off to it like WHAT...
THE WORST PART IS EVERYONE FINDS THE 🍇ER **HOT** AND JUST IGNORE WHAT HAD HAPPENED.
@@_Serial_Something_ SERIOUSLY OTS SO WEIRD LIKE ARE YOU NOT ASHAMED?
don’t forget darkness embraced by tillie Cole..dear god
Not so fun fact: That last part (not the gun part, the one after that) is apparently a method used by 🍇ists to guilt their victims into thinking that they "secretly liked it"
@@_Serial_Something_ They're also literally like "Yeah he SA'd Adeline multiple times but it's okay because he punishes other 🍇ists and kidnappers for their actions so he's actually a good person
I've been calling booktok out for a while now and I had someone defend themself by saying "its weird how you're mad at a group of women having interests" as if the interest isn't glorifying sexual assault, stalking, toxic relationships, etc.
We require more cringe binge (time to rewatch this 3 times)
so i'm now going to reconsider buying a motorcycle, thank you so much Louis !!
I'm happy to help!
BABE WAKE UP NEW TIKTOK LORE DROPPED
You are the only You Tuber I've ever heard actually admitting that they Love Reading. I just discovered this channel this month and it's already in my favorites
“Who needs ai? I can just watch masked people fuck their phone!”
honey wake up new louis mcclung video dropped :D
THIS IS THE PROBLEM BRO. I LOVE VAMPIRES SM AND I RLY WANT TO READ SMTH ABOUT THEM *WITHOUT* ROMANCE BUT EVERY SINGLE GODDAMN BOOK I READ HAS THE VAMPIRE FALLING IN LOVE W THR HUMAN OR VICE VERSA LIKE THE TWILIGHT TYPA SHIT YK?? 😭😭🙏 the amount of times that i have slammed a book shut and lost the page because a vamp and a hooman start kissing or some shit is concerning
70k is absolutely insane, could've sworn 500 was last week
I know, it's kinda wild...
on god brother it’s odd 💀

I’m so glad I found your channel it’s definitely one of the commentary channels up with coopers
when i was in middle/high school i got pulled into smut/fanfiction/booktok and i was depressed and had a porn/sex addiction. i just hope it isnt taking over these peoples lives like it did for me. thats why i cant read smut, even in small quantities.
I appreciate you so much and thank you so much for everything you’re doing for us
Imo I love romance books but the innapropriate scenes should only be there IF its relevant to the storyline.
Rule one of any comment section on book/biker/masktok, never, never look at the comment section. Especially if the video involved a fictional character or a man wearing a mask, the paragraphs are not worth reading
Unrelated question: Who's your favourite ancient greek philosopher? Mine is Socrates and Aristotle :D (Even tho Plato stans enby folks, he disregards art which is a negative point subjectivly)

“Cringe-binge”…? Excuse me while I subscribe-
I enjoyed this video immensely, and I agree with you. I’m sure many many people enjoy their fair share of corn, no matter the form, but not everyone posts about it, and not everyone puts a mask/helmet on just to fight over girls that like reading. Leave it in the fanfictions, guys, please.
(Thanks for complementing my drawing ☺ and thanks for reminding me to clean my room 😓)
A couple weeks ago me and my friend stayed up watching these masktok videos for 3 hours just dying of laughter. 😭
great video and points but personal ick of the word cringe bc if someone deems something cringe it can easily cause bullying of the thing thats been "cringe" ex: the internet deemed anime cringe for a while and anyone who liked anime in my school was bullied and it sucked.
still great video love your content ❤️
the worst part about people commenting things like "booktok will treat you right" under minors videos is the fact that its blatant grooming. pretty sure i saw one instance not that long ago where a guy had to ask these adults to stop commenting things like that because he was underage, and it didnt do much to stop these people. yall cant find actual adults with tiktoks to comment those sorts of things on? actual brainrot
I just came back from a hike, this is exactly what i needed
Louis I have been apart of your community for a while and I am genuinely so happy with how much you've been growing
also as a call of duty cosplayer (who uses balaclavas in my cosplays), masktok is such a weird place. remember yall, cod cosplayers ≠ masktok
babe wake up new louis mcclung vid just dropped
It gets bad when masked cosplayers post and shit and booktok starts getting bad in the comments like ''they have the right'' and they dont most cosplayers now a days are minors or they just want to be silly and shit and they just end up being bad and making the person uncomfortable :(
In my first period class oml there is this girl the only thing she talks about is smut and it’s so annoying like I’m sorry I’m reading mystery books and not smut 💀
you know when things are bad if classical music starts playing
Love your videos man keep going 🫶🏻
I first see the booktok and masktok and i see it very often on tiktok and i thought it was normal (i was 12 back then) and unfortunatelly i got in the spiral of corn and got addicted to it, then the 'stop the booktok trend' come out and i relized just how bad those video,
i relized how the booktok can get into a child head to think it was normal and got into it and sadly im one of the victim (now im watching less tiktok and just watch some animation meme or learn to draw to make those animation meme too)
Personally, I can't read those types of novels.

As someone who’s an enjoyer of (SOME) Booktok all of us are not like this, seriously. I tried one of the smut books and I couldn’t finish it 😂
It's so funny that she said that guy calling then out is "misogynistic" but a lot of these main characters or main love interests in these booktoks are literally the worst characters ever written about. Especially COLLEEN'S characters, it's scary.
As soon as the word "spice" is used to describe something/added to an existing term (see: "neurospicy") GALLOWS STRAIGHT TO THE GALLOWS
i’d def watch all the cringe binge videos if u did make it a series :]
i love all ur vids tho keep it up
It’s important to remember even if she is wrong misogyny can still be portrayed without mentioning women blatantly :)
As someone who reads mostly thrillers/murder mysteries,i am not this out of touch about how i should or shouldn't act around people and or ever have been.
Especially minors who are just sharing books that they like but not THOSE books which should be obvious since minors dont seek out or should be encouraged to do so.
Also loved the video you're commentary is really good and i agree to lot of things you say,I've been following as of recent.
new louis post dropped fellas 🗣🗣
it strays farther than booktok... some of these people will see guys simply showing off their outfits and comment sexual shit :/ happens all the time and its way too normalized. i saw a girl comment "not while im ovulating please, thank you!" to a post of a teen (i am assuming, he looked fairly young, maybe a young adult) simply showing off his cowboy outfit and it had 17k likes!!! gross!!!!
i love your content smmmmm you’re so satisfying to listen to when i crochet! the first time i heard you call out crocheters i got so freaked out for a second 🥲

I asked for romance recommendations when I first started reading again and was given Den of Vipers.
I can do what I want.”
And in turn, the readers will think “oh, this person just really loves me!
