I worked at three different gray iron foundries with cupola melting from 1975 to 1981. A basic lined, an acid lined and a water cooled shell cupola. The last one duplexes into a ten ton induction holding furnace. 30 40 tensile and ductile. Quite a dynamic work experience. Biggest heat was 114 ton in 12 hours with the water jacket. One day a hole developed and we had to drop bottom with a full furnace. Pretty spectacular as standing water was beneath the furnace,

They may be in some states/countries but the foundry I work for uses cupolas in all their plants across 3 states

You can still use them but they are dirty and require scrubbing or bag houses to catch the fines. Most have switched to induction melting but the era of the foundry is largely over in the US
