    I was overwhelmed when I purchased PWA. There were so many options and frankly, I wondered if I wanted to be bothered using it. But then I found your Tutorial and started relaxing and evening enjoying the prospect of using this amazing editing tool. Thank you so much for giving such an inspiring and easy to understand presentation.

    This was great! You did an excellent job! Not only did you go through each feature, but you had an example of what that would look like, AND ... even better, you explained how those features work in the real world of writing one's novel. Not just telling their function, but explaining how they help you develop as a writer. After all isn't that what all writers need, to continue to learn and hone their craft?
    Top tier stuff! Thanks so much! You have helped me finalize my descision to purchase PWA. Ciao!

    Amazing video and tremendously helpful.
    I just purchased this (April 2023) for $300 as a lifetime license and if you are a writer, BUY THIS PROGRAM! You cannot afford not to. I was ready to publish, or so I thought, when I bought ProWritingAid to just put that last coat of polish to my grammar and spelling issues. I spent two weeks, giving my book two passes and then I was good to go... right? Without knowing what it even was, I clicked on "Sticky Sentences" and my book lit up like a Christmas tree! Nearly half my novel was tagged. I spent the next three weeks cleaning this up and my novel is so much better for it.
    Now, maybe your issue is not sticky sentences, and it is overused words, inconsistent pacing, or too many long sentences for a younger reader, regardless, this program will show you where you are weak (and we all have weaknesses to work on) and help you tighten them up. This is a life saver - for you and your editor - and yes, you still should hire an editor and be sure to run your beta readers. This will not replace those human checks, but it does make things easier and helps you naturally improve your skills.

    I just completed my draft. I sectioned off each chapter into their own documents with the full novel in a document on its own. I just found your tutorial and I'm going to watch before I buy. I'm not great at self-edits (I come from an academic research background, so it's much different than fiction writing), but I do plan to buy at least a year subscription to see how much it helps. If I find it's worth it, I'm going for a lifetime if it's available. Thank you and I'll reply to this comment after your video to see what I think. I'm hoping there is a way to use it directly with my google docs (where I write since I don't have word on this computer, and I haven't learned scrivner yet).

    Nice work. I use Office 365 for Mac. Unfortunately, it is not completely compatible. No compatible Add-In for Word for Mac. Does not save to PWA Directory. Trouble opening existing docs. Same doc scores differently when rescanned? Also, how do you handle foreign phrases -- Add To Dictionary? Ignore? Delete. Excellent video.

    • @TheEditingBard
      @TheEditingBard  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you very much!
      That's a huge bummer it doesn't play nice with Mac though! When I've run into trouble opening existing doc (from PC) it's usually been because the file was so big (5,000+ words) so I would only do it a chapter at a time.
      The doc scoring differently could depend on what settings you are using. For instance, if you have it set to General, scan, get score, and then change it to Creative or Business and rescan, you will end up with a different score because it's looking for different things.
      Since I'm writing Fantasy, I run into this a lot actually lol Typically what I do is Add to Dictionary (make sure it's the correctly spelled one though!) so the next time it shows up marked, it will be because it's misspelled :)
      Hope that helps! :D

  • @streetrider1977

    Thank you so much. I learned a great deal. Question. Do you suggest,1st, 2nd, 3rd, draft then polish, each chapter one at a time? Or 1st, 2nd 3rd draft, then polish the whole book. (Seems overwhelming).
    Also, layout. I don't know anything about paragraph length, indentation, double space, how your book pages are supposed to look, etc. Hard to find info on that, seems like everyone already knows this, (where was I?) Any suggestion to links would be most appreciated. Thanks again.

    • @TheEditingBard
      @TheEditingBard  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi @Streetrider!
      So the way I do it is by using the Word extension while I write. So I'm polishing the really rough stuff (passive voice mainly, along with minor grammatical stuff) as I write, chapter by chapter. I've found it helps me produce a cleaner first draft.
      After my first draft (depending on the story, mind you) I will find a developmental editor to do a run through on it. Then I start in on my 2nd draft. 2nd one will typically have the most to re-writes to do, and then the 3rd draft will be close to read for a copyeditor. Once I get that back, minor changes, then proofread after that. So I'm all in around 4 drafts altogether. (Again, depends on the story I'm working on).
      As for the layout, I try to mimic what it will look like in book format. Here's how I have it setup in Word:
      Paper layout:
      A5 dimentions (width = 5.83 / height = 8.27)
      Line spacing:
      1.0 - 1.15 (I usually do the smaller one)
      Font:
      Times New Roman
      Font Size:
      12pt
      This helps me get a rough idea of how many pages a chapter will be because it's closer to the print size I do, which is 5.5x8.5mm.
      For paragraphs, the sweet spot I've found is 75-100 words for bigger paragraphs, with 120 words being the MAX. This helps you avoid having a block of text and readers then skimming it (which they do).
      Don't worry about indentation when you're writing, that's more of a layout thing once you've finished the drafts and you are looking at printing. If you want to, then you would indent each new paragraph :)
      Double spacing is used when doing edits, either by yourself or an editor. Most editors I know will ask for double-space which helps with reading. Once you were ready to send it off to an editor, you could simply compile all the chapters into one doc, CTRL+A, and select 2.0 for line spacing (doing this in Word as this it what I use). And boom! Done.
      The reason I don't suggest this while you're writing is because it can throw off your estimated page count. For me, I build my books very specifically, so I have page/word count goals per chapter I try to maintain. If it doesn't matter for you, don't stress on it :)
      Hope that helps! If you have any other questions, please let me know!

    I have the Plug in for Word and the downloaded App. Frankly the Plug in is nice, but I've had it crash a few times. And just like using the web interface, you have to run the reports on individual files for each chapter. I would also recommend you turn off the Auto launch feature or you will be waiting several minutes for Word to let you type because it is still trying to launch the plug in.
    What I'm not sure about, is if it crashes because I also have the Grammarly plug in? Although I never run them at the same time, and neither starts on launch, I have noticed Word is running pretty slow these days. (I use both because neither program catches enough of everything.)
    But I watched this to find out if there is a way to re-run a report but you did not mention refreshing a report. Currently, if I make a correction and I want to see if it impacted a different issue, I have to close the report and run it again. Is there a way to initiate an update without closing the report first?
    They need a refresh button. : /

    • @TheEditingBard
      @TheEditingBard  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Stephanine,
      I've not played around with the reports and trying to re-run them, so I would imagine you would need to do exactly what you're doing and close/re-run the report. Most of the time I'm using the Real-Time to catch things and that will catch things as I go (majority of the time anyway).
      I also have the Grammarly Plugin, but I haven't had any crash issues, thankfully, so I'm not sure what would be causing that. It's possible the file, when download, didn't install correctly. If it's an older computer, it make have trouble running it like it needs to.
      I'm 100% with you on a refresh button! haha That would be awesome to have!

      That's tricky because it depends on the system you are using. If it's PC, I would go to "File Explorer" and then on the lefthand side look for "Downloads". It will likely be there.
      If you don't want to do that, you can redownload the file and choose where you want to save it (I usually do "Desktop" so I can easily find it) and then go there.

    Fine job. You made it also entertaining. Did not know of all these features. Purchased ProWritingAid as part of a stash and for a long time had no chance to properly use it. Was a little apprehensive because I had a similar app that was visually more appealing. However, any text in italics -- I use it for characters' thoughts -- was a disaster, ending up in huge amounts of garbled text. Very discouraging and a loss of time. Luckily none of that with ProWritingAid. Am going to test with a children's fantasy trilogy soon.

    Only use a comma when separating independent clauses with a coordinating conjunction (and, but, for, or-and so on). Otherwise, there is no need for a comma.
    Let the subject drive the verb-not the other way round-so I was taught with fear of failure. Most of my sentences, if not all of them, now always start with the subject. Except when they start with an adverb or pronoun. Lol. I use both Grammarly and Pro Writer Aid - free versions of course!

    • @TheEditingBard

      Hi James!
      The easiest way to do that is to build each chapter one at a time and not as a full doc. Even Grammarly has a hard time loading full books.
      You can also download their Word extension if you use that for writing and do it as your write each chapter (which is what I do).

    Thanks so much for this video. Very helpful! I have some questions for you and some comments about my limited experience with ProWritingAid. I added it to WORD, and it does take WORD forever to load now. As I was trying to use it, I decided I needed more instruction and that is how I ended up watching your video. As far as I could tell using it on WORD the Menu never showed up. Do I need to do all of the settings choices on the website and hope that will transfer to the version I have in WORD? Also, I have written my entire novel (my 3rd book) and after making revisions chapter by chapter, I really want it to analyze the manuscript as a whole. It's about 75,000 words. If I am willing to wait , will it be able to do analyze the whole thing? Also, where can I find out about you as an editor - your approach, your price, etc. I wouldn't be looking for the things the software can do. I need someone to read the whole thing and make suggestions about structure, plot, etc. Thanks for the great video.

    • @TheEditingBard
      @TheEditingBard  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jan!
      The integration should show up along the top in Word's menu bar. It will likely be listed after "Help".
      Once it opens, you should see the PWA menu bar, and in order to change settings within Word, you will go all the way to the right. It is right after "Plagiarism". Click that and you should see "Settings". Once that opens up, you should see the different options available :)
      As for the whole book, no, you would likely cause it to crash. It's not meant to handle a doc that size, so I would recommend checking everything chapter by chapter.
      Hope that helps!

      I've run into this a couple of times, and it seems to vary (for me anyway) on the platform I'm using. When using the app or the MS Word extension, I've not run into that. Not sure there is a way around that. If you haven't already, I would check with PWA's tech team and let them know. It might be a bug they can fix :)

    Great video thanks. Would have liked to see how it works with Scrivener.
    Price for lifetime subscription is now £399 which is $599 and that is a bit steep - especially as I am 63 years old! It looks a good tool but it is a crazy price so I probably won't be getting it. They seem to be ripping off non-US customers.

    • @TheEditingBard
      @TheEditingBard  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, that is way higher than what it is in the US! It's still $399, but obviously it works out differently with the currency conversion. You could try the app Honey (it finds coupons) and see it you can get a deal on it. I've been using Honey for a little while now and it's helped save money here and there :)
      I don't have or use Scrivner as from my research it was overly complicated for what I was looking for and tend to use.

      Hi Estela!
      You have two options with PWA and Word.
      Option #1: PWA has an extension found here:prowritingaid.com/en/App/Plugins
      It is for Word and it connects PWA to your Word document and gives you all the same features as the online app does.
      This is what I use for all my writing as it is the easiest way of doing it. It will cause a slower load time for Word when opening, but (to me) it's worth it.
      Option #2: When you go to the PWA website and open the app, it will take you to all your documents. You'll see the orange plus (+) button. If you move your mouse over it (don't click) you will see it say "Add Document" and just below that, a small green button with an arrow pointing up. That is the "Upload Document" button.
      Selecting that allows you to then choose your Word document and upload it.
      As you can see, this has many more steps than the first option, which is why I set mine up to simply connect with Word and do everything in there :) It keeps life simple.
      I hope that helps you!

    Takes forever to load--load less than 4,000 words per chapter for each chapter. Preferably less than 3,000 words. Load individual chapters separately.
    The more features you choose for a combo report, the longer it takes.

    It's that time of year again! #ProWritingAid is has started their #BlackFridaySale on their subscriptions and their Lifetime deal. You guys probably know, but I love PWA because it is robust in the reports it offers (20) and, in their words:
    "ProWritingAid easily integrates with #MSWord/#Outlook, #GoogleDocs, #Scrivener, #OpenOffice, and #FinalDraft so you can edit wherever you write.
    Our browser extensions for #Chrome, #Firefox, #Edge, and #Safari let you check your writing on almost every website, including #Facebook, #Twitter, #Gmail, #Medium, #Wattpad, and more."
    I can confirm as I use most of these. Seriously, if you want to take your writing to the next level, grab this deal before it leaves 11/30!

    Waow!
    It was 240$ for lifetime membership a year ago?! Why is it 400$ now?!

      I've noticed it's been climbing as well over the past year as well. A lot of programs do this, especially if they are good and can back up the price.
      When you consider that it's $400 for a 50yr subscription, the price isn't all that bad. Compare that to Grammarly, which is $140 per year, you' would pay $420 over just 3yrs.

      @@TheEditingBard Thank you for the reply! :-)
      I am from the days where you bought a program and then you owned it and there were no Subscriptions. So I do not give credit for the "50 years subscription"... It is just that you "Buy the program for 400$" and that is it. :-) And yes! Grammarly is just stupid expensive!

      @@chrisbenn I prefer that as well and despise subscriptions lol I'm all about saving money and not forking out $$$$ in subscriptions, which is why I recommend this one. The way I see it, I'll be almost 80 and senile, so I won't have to worry about the renewal XD

    Love your video. Very helpful but you might want to quit using "at" incorrectly. 😉
